00:00you know what you want to know why they're going to win this thing i was thinking about this
00:03and uh by the way uh steve kerr joined us at uh 9 45 at night last night i know it was like
00:10very very end of the show we actually went later than we've ever gone before because we were
00:15enjoying talking to steve and then he couldn't hear us and we had to reconnect with him and
00:19all these things were happening um if you got to hear it great if you didn't we'll have it again
00:24for you today in exactly an hour okay in full because there's a lot of what we think are
00:29interesting and important things in there because steve as always he's just brilliant at this is i
00:34think he's very very he's very forthcoming um if you've got coming good questions i really suggest
00:40you listen to this conversation because um we went uh we we went a few rounds with him on it and and
00:47he you know i think he explained it in a way to where i walked out of there and i went i i don't
00:52really think you can argue this anymore but i know not everyone's going to agree with me on this but i
00:57thought steve was that clear with why they're doing what they're doing just that as an example
01:02but there was one moment where um i said look i know you're the coach of the warriors so you're
01:10not going to come out here and be like yeah we think we're better than the rockets i get it
01:14the coach is only allowed to say nice things about the other team and how incredible they are and that's
01:21what you uh actually preemptively said before your question i said but can can we talk a little bit
01:27about the dynamic of this matchup that most people seem to think is is the the one that plays you
01:36have a bunch of players who've done this a bunch of times and they don't they've got a bunch of 22
01:44year olds who will play their very very first playoff game on sunday night and what i brought
01:51up to him was your brains like you have to give me that there is an advantage for you with the brains
01:59that you guys collectively have specifically in uh in this matchup and um i thought his answer was
02:09really good and i started thinking about it a little bit more and i started thinking about i
02:14think that's actually why i like the warriors in these playoffs so much and we'll play for you what
02:20he said here in just a second but i started thinking about all the things we break down when
02:25there's a big playoff matchup in any sport and we do it we do it in x's and o's and we do it in
02:31matchups the rockets can rebound and the warriors can't and steph can shoot and the rockets can't and and
02:37and we do all of these physical matchup things i think the mental side is what usually wins
02:44usually wins sure patrick mahomes is great but you know what else really helps they figured out how
02:51their right tackle can cheat he gets to start blocking the defense before the ball snapped
02:57right and and and all the things we've talked about with the officials the chiefs how about the
03:02philadelphia eagles and and the tush push i don't think that's a a physical advantage i think they've
03:08figured something out in terms of smarts and even if i went to the los angeles dodgers last year
03:14they overwhelm you with talent but how'd they get all their talent how'd they get it all they got all
03:20their talent because they figured out a way to work the system that nobody else in baseball is doing
03:25which is they figured out how to pay all of their salaries 50 years from now i i i think the
03:32warriors have a massive edge on the majority of the nba because of their brains if not the physical
03:39side of their roster but depends on who you face and if you face the lakers in the next round they
03:45probably have in their mind the same amount of brains that the warriors do jj reddick is not as good
03:52as uh steve kerr i get that but depends on who you face off with and in this matchup against the
03:58rockets one of the youngest teams in the association you should have that edge and will that edge really
04:04matter well you would expect that it probably could and should and if you look at all the teams that
04:10have won as a seven or an eight seed in the best of seven era all these teams won one or actually
04:18only one of the first two games on the road and three of them lost game one and then they won game
04:24two and three of them won game one and then they lost game two so if you're the warriors you're looking
04:29at this as a 96 minute game you're not looking at it as we got to get game one you're thinking we just
04:35need to split if you split in houston well you're in a great spot historically to pull off the upset yeah
04:41absolutely and and and i think that's maybe the answer to why like that little uh algorithm or or or
04:49word problem that we threw out on the crossover why are the warriors favored so heavily to win the
04:54series yet the game one winner usually wins the series and the rockets are favored to win game one
05:00i think it's because the world or at least vegas thinks the warriors are more likely to be able to
05:07adjust to the rockets than the rockets are going to be to adjust the other way around like wouldn't
05:14you argue that game one is bigger for the rockets than it is for the warriors absolutely i would
05:18absolutely exactly no doubt so i think that's why and i think that's i think that's a nod to the
05:23warriors experience and brain power right and i think it's a nod to the reality of what you're facing
05:28if you are the rockets because if the home team loses game one well now game two becomes somewhat of a
05:35must win and if you look at the history of the nba playoffs teams that are down oh two they win seven
05:41percent of the time and if you're houston and you're thinking about home court advantage well
05:46home court doesn't matter until game seven really and if you're down oh two game seven is not going to
05:53happen so if you're houston and you know that golden state's got the experience then you need to win
05:58you need to win both realistically if you're houston so i don't think if you're at home for games one and
06:03two and if you're houston you're not thinking like okay a split all we need is no no you have to have
06:09them both which means game one is a must win yeah yeah well of course as is game two but if you're
06:14the warriors you're thinking all we need to do is win one of these two didn't the warriors lose the
06:18first two against sacramento two years ago weren't they down oh two yeah and they won the series so
06:23like i even if the warriors lose the first two which i don't think they will i would i would argue
06:29that they're still in it but i'm with you if if if they if the warriors split they're in great shape
06:35and good god if they win both games one and two night night forget about it whole thing is totally
06:40over yep um i don't suggest that the warriors lose the first two and try to come back but i think they
06:47can because as we always say especially with young teams like each win as a series build is harder to
06:54get and and the fourth one is the hardest to get and so i have a very hard time believing that houston's
07:00just going to run rough shot right through the warriors this is going to be a long ish series if
07:07houston is to win it which means they're going to have to do it with the gravity of eliminating
07:12champions in a game six or a game seven situation just my opinion i don't think they're ready to do it
07:18so for me that's the matchup that is the key one when we look at this series we'd love to hear what
07:26yours is what's the matchup that to you is the one you're thinking about the most as we enter this
07:34weekend 888-957-9570 it can be individuals it can be team wide for me it's the warriors brains
07:41against the brains of the houston rockets if you've ever been a parent of a teenager you do this when they
07:48make their decisions you're like just remember their brains are not fully formed yet and that's
07:54who the rockets are and it's not a slight there are wonderful teenagers out there but their brains
07:59aren't fully formed yet houston rockets your brains are not fully formed yet you're phenomenal at what
08:05you do you won 52 games i'm impressed but your brains are not fully formed and you're in my opinion
08:12you're going to need them here's what steve kerr said when we threw this idea at him i just
08:18think the brain power um the experience the corporate knowledge whatever you want to call it
08:24of steve dre loon uh jimmy obviously has been deep deep in the playoffs two finals trips carrying his
08:31team his miami teams there i feel like we have everything we need to go and win this first round
08:38series we have the talent we have the experience but we know uh how good houston is we they just came
08:44to our place last week and and beat us and uh so we've got a lot of respect for them and and uh we
08:49know we're gonna have to play well to win so that last sentence was the obligatory i'm the head coach
08:53of the warriors part he said all the things he said and then he went and we know houston's very good and
08:59they came back here to chase center and beat us just a couple of weeks that's that's that's where the
09:05coach speak stuff comes in and you have to do that because you don't want to end up on a bulletin board
09:09but the rest of what he said is what's on my mind the warriors even called it uh what did he call it
09:15corporate know-how or yep or something like that like corporate knowledge yeah yeah i think the
09:21warriors can outthink the rockets yeah and that can matter and ultimately it comes down to basketball
09:27and i do think that as you get deeper in this into the series then the rockets know how it grows
09:33and i'm looking at their roster and the amount of playoff games that they've all played and
09:38the biggest players on their team jalen green zero amin thompson zero shangun zero jabari smith zero
09:46and i'm adding up all of the playoff games of everybody on the roster and i haven't gotten
09:52to jeff green yet and i guess i'll throw him in there because he is a rocket he's got a uniform
09:56steven adams and dylan brooks and fred van vliet these are guys who have actually played
10:02playoff games but the most important rockets are guys who are making their playoff
10:06playoff games i'm turning out to you guys so i'm going out to camera
10:12that's my decision i'd say so i'll see you guys
10:15ben knowing that's a good idea
10:17and i think that that should be Mittel ca
10:20that's just like my heart allowing them to go
10:22back on которые flash out with my body
10:25and i think of myself a most important footage
10:27and you look then i think of it as good if you want me to do
10:30like this the northjung and i think of neglected
10:33you know what's making of me
