Tobi and Lynnel discuss the Nationals slow start to the season. The guys think the team needs to make significant upgrades to the pitching staff if they hope to compete.
Transcript
00:00I think that's the discussion and the talking point right there.
00:03What does this offense have to show between now and July
00:08for Rizzo to make a move to bring in a bullpen arm?
00:12Because I think that's where you're kind of looking at right now.
00:15And I'll give him a little bit more grace when it comes to the offense
00:19because obviously we've seen K-Bear hit it really well to start.
00:22James Wood, I mean, looks like the best power hitter in baseball right now.
00:25I'm probably hyperbolizing that.
00:26A little bit there.
00:27You pick up what I'm putting down.
00:28Yeah, sure.
00:29He's looked amazing here to start.
00:31Dylan Cruz trying to get out of his little slump that he's been in.
00:34Looked much better in Pittsburgh.
00:35So what does the offense have to show between now and July for Rizzo
00:42to feel like that's a move worth making?
00:44Because we know he's not scared to go make trade deadline moves.
00:47Yeah, I feel like you just got to show more consistency.
00:49This team can score some runs.
00:52I think the difficult part about this and really the reason why I think this season
00:56was so intriguing but also why I think you've seen it get off to a slower start
01:00than maybe you would have liked is this season was going to go where the young
01:03guys took it.
01:04Yeah, like James Wood has been fine, but outside of him like Dylan Cruz has
01:08struggled.
01:09It was going to be on Dylan Cruz to get things going.
01:11Jacob Young struggled out of the gate.
01:12He's playing a little bit better now, but even so Jacob Young isn't some dude
01:15that's going to hit 30 homers and make the most impact with his bat.
01:18So it's dependent on these young guys, the offseason acquisitions.
01:22Nate Lowe has been really good.
01:23Yeah, I like what he's been able to do, but Josh Bell is provided next to nothing.
01:27Paul DeYoung is now hurt, but even when he was on the field defensively, he was
01:31good offensively wasn't giving you enough at the plate.
01:33So it's just a difficult spot for this team to be in where seemingly since 2019
01:38this team has been in a free fall and they remind me frankly a little bit of where
01:44the Wizards are, where everyone looks at the Wizards and go, gosh, they got to win
01:49now.
01:50And it's like, no, no, no, they don't have to win now.
01:52The issue is they were terrible, terrible, terrible.
01:55And then they brought in the new front office and they finally started doing
01:57things correctly.
01:58It's only been a couple of years of doing it correctly, but it's longer time frame
02:04of being bad.
02:04Whereas now for the Nationals, 2019 happened.
02:07They eventually start moving on from some of their guys and they went down, but
02:11really they've only started developing and getting more guys.
02:14In the organization to really, really help over the last two to three years.
02:17And so it takes a little bit longer in baseball to rebuild some of these
02:20things, especially if you're not going to spend money in free agency.
02:23So it's, it's frankly disappointing.
02:25Like, I don't think there's any other way to say it.
