02:04It's neither the dark Fridays or the bright Sundays that require the greatest amount of grace.
02:23We've all learned, even in our own lives, that the greatest grace is needed during eternally long Saturdays,
02:31when we're waiting for what happened to be resolved,
02:35when we're waiting for the promise to be kept,
02:38when we're waiting for the diagnoses to be confirmed.
02:43It's those long Saturdays that are so hard.
02:46There's a very famous sermon on Easter by a friend of mine,
02:51and the title of the sermon,
02:53It's Friday, but Sunday's coming.
02:57Say that with me.
02:58It's Friday, but Sunday's coming.
03:02That's surely how it was for the friends of Jesus,
03:05as the hours of Saturday overtook them with emptiness.
03:09But something was about to happen that would change these men and women forever.
03:16No longer would they be cowards hiding in the backdrop of the crucifixion,
03:21but something would happen that would change them into flaming evangelists
03:26who filled the whole world with the gospel,
03:29and according to the record even of secular historians,
03:32these particular people turned their world upside down.
03:37It is the experience of the resurrection of the Savior
03:42that explains all of this,
03:45and of course, this particular truth about his life
03:48is found in all of the gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
03:52I've chosen today to tell the story
03:54from the 24th chapter of the book of Luke and the first 12 verses.
03:59Here we are told of the experience of the empty tomb
04:03and are met with some visiting women in verse 1.
04:08Now, on the first day of the week, very early in the morning,
04:12they and certain other women with them
04:15came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared.
04:21We see these women on their way to the tomb
04:23engaged in this ministry of love,
04:25but we forget it was also a ministry of sorrow and hopelessness.
04:30These women who came to the tomb on that first Easter
04:34would have been some of the last ones at the cross
04:39with their Savior.
04:41Luke tells us that all of his acquaintances
04:44and the women who followed him from Galilee
04:46stood at a distance watching the crucifixion.
04:51It is moving to see them now on this day,
04:54early in the morning,
04:55coming to the grave of their loved one,
04:57bringing their spices.
05:01They brought the spices as a show of their love
05:04for their dead master.
05:05They thought of him as dead,
05:06and yet they still loved him with a great love.
05:09The things they had hoped for seemed destroyed,
05:12but their love for the Lord was not destroyed.
05:14I mean, Jesus had been beaten and put to death,
05:17but the love of these women did not die with Jesus.
05:21They had been told by Christ before his death
05:25about his resurrection,
05:27but either they did not believe him
05:29or it just went over the top of their heads.
05:32They were coming to embalm the Lord's body
05:35because they thought this was the end of him.
05:40Their faith had failed them,
05:42but their love was still strong,
05:44and they brought their spices that day,
05:47which would have been sorted into the foldings
05:50of the cloth around his body
05:52sort of as an external embalming process.
05:56They came with love to visit his grave.
06:02But as they drew near to the grave,
06:04something happened.
06:05Verse 2 says,
06:06they found the stone rolled away from the tomb.
06:09That's not just an incidental detail.
06:12Let me fill in the blanks.
06:14This was something that was quite amazing to them.
06:16In fact,
06:16one of the other gospel writers tells us
06:19that this was the subject of their conversation
06:21on their way to the tomb that day.
06:24They had said among themselves, Mark 16, 3,
06:27who will roll away the stone
06:29from the door of the tomb for us?
06:32Now, Matthew records in his writings
06:34that a large stone was rolled
06:37against the front of the tomb.
06:39Mark says the stone was extremely large,
06:42and some of the manuscripts
06:44described the stone as a stone
06:46which 20 men could not roll away.
06:50Scholars have discussed what it would take
06:53for a stone to be big enough
06:55to cover the tomb where Jesus was buried,
06:57and they have said
06:58it would have weighed somewhere
06:59between one and a half and two tons.
07:03On that first Sunday morning,
07:04when the women came to the tomb,
07:06one of the first things that shocked them
07:08and made them realize something was going on
07:10was this stone was not where it was supposed to be.
07:13It was not in front of the tomb.
07:15It was not even rolled back up the slot.
07:18It was in a place by itself
07:20where it could not possibly have gotten
07:23if humans were involved in the process.
07:27Now they approached the sepulcher
07:28where Jesus was buried,
07:32and the Scripture says in verse 3 of Luke 24
07:35that they went in,
07:36and they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
07:39Immediately, they noticed that no one was in the tomb.
07:44And I want to say to you
07:45that the gospel rests entirely on the fact
07:47that the tomb was empty.
07:49This has been our claim,
07:51and no one has ever been able to deny it.
07:53Let's face it.
07:54The Jews of Jesus' day could not deny it,
07:56even though there was nothing they wanted more
07:59than to discredit the witnesses of the resurrection.
08:01And the Romans could not deny it
08:04in spite of the fact
08:05this was the most embarrassing event
08:07in the 10-year reign of Pontius Pilate.
08:10In order for you to grab the magnitude
08:13of this very thing, the empty grave,
08:15let us remember that the disciples began to preach
08:18the resurrection of Jesus Christ
08:21not in some distant country.
08:23They began to preach
08:25that Christ was risen from the dead
08:27in the city of Jerusalem.
08:29The garden tomb isn't out in the country.
08:32It's not in the suburbs.
08:33It's almost downtown.
08:35And the disciples began to preach
08:37that Jesus had come back from the grave,
08:41that he'd risen from the dead.
08:43And anyone who wanted to prove that
08:45had only to do one thing,
08:47go to the tomb where he supposedly was buried
08:50and produce his body.
08:51If they had done that,
08:53Christianity would have been dead on arrival,
08:55and there would be nothing like
08:57what we enjoy here today
08:59in the celebration of a living Christ.
09:02So everywhere they went,
09:04they preached on this.
09:06God blessed the message of the resurrection
09:08and the church was born.
09:10We're here today because of those early days
09:12of the preaching of the apostles.
09:14How many of you know that the world
09:17offers promises full of emptiness,
09:20but Easter offers emptiness full of promise?
09:23Empty cross, empty tomb, empty grave clothes,
09:28all full of promise.
09:31Well, that's what happened
09:33when the women arrived that day,
09:34but there's an explanation of all of this
09:37about to happen.
09:37In verse 4, we meet some angels.
09:41And it happened as they were greatly perplexed about this.
09:43Two men stood by them in shining garments.
09:47Now, we shouldn't be surprised
09:48that the angels show up at the resurrection
09:50because they showed up a lot
09:51during the Lord's ministry on this earth.
09:53I wrote a book on angels some years ago,
09:55and I remember how surprised I was
09:57to discover how involved the angels were
10:00with Jesus while he was on this earth.
10:02Let's face it, they got it all started
10:04when they heralded his coming outside of Bethlehem,
10:08announced that Jesus was to be born.
10:11It was the angels who told Mary this was gonna happen.
10:13It was an angel who told Joseph.
10:14It was angels that told the shepherds.
10:18When Jesus began his public ministry
10:20and he went out into the wilderness
10:21to be tempted by Satan,
10:23guess who was with him?
10:24Angel.
10:26When he was in the Garden of Gethsemane
10:28in that hour of agony for humanity,
10:31guess who was there?
10:32Angels.
10:33And who rolled the stone away from the tomb?
10:36It was the angels.
10:36And who shared the message of the gospel
10:38for the first time?
10:39It was the angels.
10:40Two angels that Mary saw
10:44when she looked into the tomb.
10:46And these angels had a message for Mary,
10:49a very assuring message.
10:51As they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth,
10:54the angels said to them,
10:55why are you seeking the living among the dead?
10:58He's not here.
10:59He's risen.
11:01In other words, Jesus is alive.
11:03The tomb couldn't keep him under.
11:05So the angelic messengers give an assuring message.
11:09And that assuring message
11:11is the message we celebrate on this day.
11:15And then there's this moment of awakened memory.
11:18And I put this in here
11:19because it's kind of critical
11:20to the way some people look at the resurrection.
11:23Verses six through eight,
11:25the angel speaking to the women said,
11:28do you remember how he spoke to you
11:29when he was still in Galilee saying
11:31that the son of man will be delivered
11:33into the hands of sinful men
11:34and be crucified and the third day rise again?
11:37And the lights go on.
11:40Oh, yeah, I remember that.
11:42I run into people all the time that say,
11:44I don't know why you people make such a big deal
11:45out of the resurrection.
11:46Jesus didn't even believe in the resurrection.
11:50What do you mean Jesus didn't believe in the resurrection?
11:52He experienced the resurrection.
11:53But he also spoke about it.
11:57During his three years of ministry,
11:59he spoke freely of his death,
12:01his burial, and his resurrection.
12:03For instance, early in his ministry,
12:05immediately after he cleansed the temple,
12:08he got into this discussion,
12:09and he said this to the Jews of Jerusalem.
12:12And I got to tell you what he said freaked them out.
12:15He said, if you destroy this temple,
12:17in three days I will raise it up.
12:19Now, he's standing at the temple that was built
12:22that took hundreds of years to build,
12:24one of the seven wonders of the world,
12:27and he's talking to the Jewish people,
12:29and he says, if you destroy this temple,
12:31I'll raise it up in three days.
12:32And they said, yeah, right.
12:34But you don't have to wonder what he was saying
12:36because in the verse it says,
12:39but he was speaking of the temple of his body.
12:42In other words, if you destroy this temple,
12:46in three days I will raise it up.
12:50On another occasion during the second period
12:52of his Galilean ministry,
12:54after he healed a demoniac, Jesus said,
12:57for as Jonah was three days and three nights
13:00in the belly of the great fish,
13:02so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights
13:05in the heart of the earth.
13:06What was he talking about?
13:07He was talking about the resurrection.
13:09Immediately following Peter's great confession,
13:13we read that from that time Jesus began
13:16to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem,
13:20suffer many things from elders and chief priests
13:22and scribes, and be killed and be raised the third day.
13:27So if somebody says Jesus didn't believe
13:29in the resurrection, they just haven't read the record.
13:32He believed in it.
13:33He taught it to his disciples.
13:34He told them it was gonna happen.
13:36He described all the details of it.
13:38And the fact that they didn't believe it,
13:40even after it happened, many of them,
13:42is not the fault of Jesus.
13:44He told them it's an amazing thing
13:47that they had been with him all this time.
13:49They had heard all these teachings.
13:51But when it happened,
13:53of course, there's the evidence of the empty tomb
13:57and the declaration of the women.
14:02When they went into the tomb and saw that it was empty,
14:05the Bible says they returned from the tomb
14:08and told all these things to the eleven, all the rest.
14:11And it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna
14:12and Mary, the mother of James,
14:14and the other women with them
14:15who told these things to the apostles.
14:18And when they told the disciples what they had seen,
14:20verse 11 says,
14:21their words seemed to them like idle tales
14:24and they didn't believe them.
14:26I mean, the apostles were not men poised
14:29on the brink of belief,
14:30just needing somebody to push them over the edge.
14:33They were utterly skeptical.
14:35Even when the women they knew well
14:37told them of their experience,
14:40they refused to believe.
14:43So if you're here today
14:44and you're a hard case,
14:46you're a skeptic,
14:47you're in good company.
14:48The disciples were just like that too.
14:50They got through it
14:51and I hope you will too.
14:53But I'll tell you,
14:54there's a person
14:54who's gonna enter into the dialogue here.
14:56He's gonna fix everything.
14:58He always fixes everything.
14:59Do you know about Peter?
15:02Here comes Peter.
15:05Peter, listen to these women.
15:06He didn't know if they were telling the truth or not,
15:08but Peter, listen to what it says.
15:10Peter rose and he ran to the tomb.
15:12I don't know if it's true or not,
15:14but I'm gonna find out for myself.
15:16And then they came
15:17and they found this discovery.
15:18Stooping down when Peter got to the tomb,
15:24he saw the linen cloths lying by themselves.
15:28In a real sense,
15:30the grave of Jesus was not totally empty.
15:32In fact, some years ago,
15:33I preached an Easter sermon on the title,
15:35the not quite empty tomb
15:37because the tomb had some grave clothes
15:40that were still there.
15:42Now, I'm gonna quote from John's gospel,
15:44but first I wanna explain something to you about John.
15:46John wrote his gospel, the fourth gospel,
15:50and he never talked about himself by name.
15:53He coined a special name for himself.
15:56Do you know what that name is?
15:57Here's what, when John talked about himself in his writing,
15:59he called himself the disciple that Jesus loved.
16:03Come on, John.
16:06I know you're trying to be humble,
16:08but that's over the top, man.
16:10The disciple that Jesus loved?
16:12Well, it gets worse.
16:14The Bible says in John 20,
16:16so they both ran together,
16:20and the other disciple outran Peter
16:23and came to the tomb first.
16:26John could not help himself.
16:27He had to put in the text
16:29that when they ran to the tomb,
16:31he was faster than Peter.
16:35The other disciple that Jesus loved got there first.
16:40John left the tomb that day full of faith,
16:42but not Peter.
16:43Peter, the Bible says about Peter
16:46that he departed marveling to himself what had happened.
16:50So I tell you all of this to let you know
16:52that the opening mood for Easter that day
16:54wasn't what you might think,
16:56that here's all these religious people
16:57maybe in a church someplace waiting to hear the news.
17:00Well, he came out.
17:01He's risen.
17:03No, it was surrounded by people just like all of us
17:05in all different stages of belief and unbelief
17:08about the reality of the resurrection.
17:10Some were sure, some were not sure,
17:13but seemed to me like the ones who were closest to Jesus
17:15had the most trouble trying to figure this out
17:18and accept it as fact.
17:21When Jesus came out of the grave,
17:23he met astonishment and surprise and fear and confusion.
17:27Yeah, he told them this was going to happen,
17:29but they didn't get it.
17:31And Easter's still like that today.
17:33For many people, it's a surprise.
17:39So let me ask you, if all of this is true,
17:41if he really did come out of the grave,
17:42if he is alive, if he overcame death,
17:45if he's the only one who's ever lived,
17:48who of his own power took back life,
17:50if that is true, what does it mean to us?
17:55Let me suggest three things that it means to me.
17:58Maybe you agree.
17:59First of all, it means that I can be forgiven.
18:03You see, when Jesus was teaching and preaching
18:06before his death, he said things like,
18:09if you put your trust in me, you can be forgiven.
18:12If you put your trust in me, your sins can be covered.
18:16And then he went and did what he said he was going to do.
18:18He died on the cross, and everybody knew that.
18:20And he was witnessed by the Jewish community
18:23and by the Romans.
18:24He hung on a cross between two thieves
18:26and poured out his life, and he died.
18:31And so let's put a period there for just a moment
18:33and say, if that's all that happened, are we still okay?
18:36No, we're not still okay.
18:38We're not okay because a lot of people have died
18:42for things they believed in.
18:44A lot of people have said, I'll die for this.
18:47Even some of our own patriots have put their lives
18:49on the line for things they believed.
18:51But Jesus said, I'm gonna die, and I'm gonna come back,
18:55and when I come out of the grave, you're gonna know
18:57that everything I told you about forgiveness is true.
19:01And when Jesus came out of the grave that day,
19:03what he proved was that his death on the cross
19:07was sufficient for our sin.
19:10I like to say it this way.
19:11His death was the sacrifice,
19:13and his resurrection was a stamp on the document
19:17paid in full.
19:20So I got saved one day, long, long time ago.
19:25My dad led me to Christ.
19:28I've been saved ever since
19:29because once you get saved, you stay saved.
19:32And I know that my sins are forgiven.
19:35I've done some things I'm not proud of,
19:37as all of you have,
19:38but I've confessed them to the Lord,
19:40and the Bible says if we confess our sin,
19:42he is faithful and just to forgive us our sin
19:44and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
19:46And that's what he does.
19:47I stand before you today free and forgiven.
19:50I'm a forgiven boy,
19:51and I know a lot of you are forgiven too.
19:54Amen?
19:58But not only are we forgiven,
20:00the Bible says we have fellowship.
20:02Remember what happened?
20:03Jesus came out of the grave.
20:04He came out of the grave,
20:05and 40 days later, he went back to heaven.
20:08So what's he doing up there?
20:10The Bible says he's seated at the right hand of the Father,
20:12making intercession for us.
20:14He is seated right next to God the Father,
20:16and when I pray, he takes my prayers,
20:19and he puts them in the perfect format
20:20and gives them to God, and they get answered.
20:24And here's the goodest of all the good news.
20:27He's not only in heaven as my advocate and my intercessor,
20:32he also lives within my heart,
20:34and I can talk with him anytime I want,
20:37and I talk to him today.
20:41Last of all, third, not only do I get forgiven
20:44and I get fellowship with God,
20:47but third, my future is sealed.
20:49It's fixed.
20:50I don't have to worry about what's going to happen to me
20:53when I die, because the promise is this.
20:56Jesus said,
20:57The Bible teaches that there's two kinds of death.
21:10In fact, it calls it the first death and the second death.
21:14Death is a word that means separation.
21:16That's what the word itself means.
21:18The first death, it means that your soul and your spirit
21:21gets separated from your body.
21:23That's what happens when a person dies.
21:25We put their body in the grave,
21:27but the Bible says their soul and their spirit
21:29goes to be with God.
21:31Absent from the body is present with the Lord.
21:33That's what the Scripture says.
21:35That's the first death,
21:36and all of us will experience that
21:38if the Lord doesn't come back beforehand.
21:40But the second death is one that's not understood by many.
21:44It's the one you don't want to get close to.
21:46The second death isn't the separation of your soul
21:48and your spirit from your body.
21:50The second death is the separation of your soul
21:53and spirit from God forever.
21:58Now, listen again to what Jesus said.
22:00Jesus said unto her,
22:02I am the resurrection and the life.
22:04He who believes in me,
22:06though he may die physically,
22:09he shall live.
22:12When you die, you keep on living.
22:16And whosoever lives and believes in me
22:19shall never die the second death,
22:21because when you believe in Jesus,
22:23you'll live forever in his presence.
22:26So, what I know is this.
22:28I'm not afraid to die.
22:30I'm not anxious to die.
22:33I'm like the little boy who was in class one day,
22:36and his teacher said,
22:38how many of you want to go to heaven when you die?
22:40All the little children raised their hands
22:43except this little boy in the back.
22:46And she said, son,
22:47don't you want to go to heaven when you die?
22:48Oh, he said, yes, when I die,
22:49but I thought you were getting up a load for today,
22:51you know?
22:52I don't want to go.
22:53I don't want to die any sooner than I have to,
22:56but I'm not afraid to die
22:57because I know what it is.
23:01I'll never die spiritually
23:02because I've made peace with God.
23:05I've faced death physically,
23:06and I know that it's a scary thing,
23:09but I'm not afraid of it
23:10because I know what it is.
23:13One day, Jesus is going to come back,
23:15and if we haven't already died before then,
23:18we're going to be caught up together, be with him.
23:20And the Bible says,
23:20so shall we ever be with the Lord.
23:24Well, that's the resurrection.
23:25That's why I believe in it,
23:26why I love to teach it,
23:27why this is such a special day.
23:29I'm forgiven.
23:30I got somebody to talk to every day in heaven,
23:33and I'm going to spend eternity with my Father.
23:36Those are pretty good takeaways from the resurrection.
23:41Carol Wolf tells about a time some years ago
23:44when she was in a Christian theater group,
23:47and she was traveling around doing a musical
23:49based on C.S. Lewis's
23:52The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe.
23:55I don't know if you've read that,
23:56but it's a pretty good metaphor of the gospel.
23:58And the lion, Aslan, is a metaphor
24:02or a picture of Jesus Christ.
24:04I just need to tell you that
24:05so you understand the rest of the story.
24:08She said, I helped prepare the costumes
24:10and the sets and the props, make the bookings.
24:13She said, I booked a show at Easter
24:14in a children's hospital.
24:16And when the kids arrived for the show in wheelchairs
24:19and even on a gurney, as well as by foot,
24:22we realized that we were going to be very crowded,
24:25and we decided to remove some of the set pieces.
24:28And even when we did that,
24:29the children were right next to the actors
24:31throughout the entire performance.
24:34At any rate, during this performance,
24:37there was a scene where the white witch, the devil,
24:41humiliates and kills the good lion, Christ.
24:45And the children were totally caught up in the action.
24:49I mean, they didn't stir or speak,
24:50but more than a few were starting to cry.
24:56She said, I was offstage watching this,
24:58waiting to go on,
24:58and the activities director of the hospital came
25:01and furiously started to chew me out.
25:04She said, what are you doing?
25:06You didn't tell me this was going to happen.
25:07Look at these children.
25:08You're breaking their hearts.
25:09I said, don't you get it?
25:11Aslan is like Jesus.
25:13He'll come back.
25:16Just then, two actresses playing sisters
25:18were singing a beautiful song
25:20in the midst of this presentation,
25:22and the song was called,
25:22Why Did This Have to Happen?
25:25They sang about Aslan taking the punishment
25:28for their traitor brother,
25:29all while sitting in front of Aslan's dead body on the set.
25:34When they finished their song,
25:35they cried on each other's shoulders,
25:37and while in this posture of grief,
25:40Aslan sat up behind them.
25:44And that's when the children came to life.
25:45They shouted with joy.
25:46They clapped and laughed as if they were full of excitement.
25:50And the ones closest to the two women
25:52were shouting and pulling on their clothes,
25:54saying, look, look, he's alive, he's alive.
25:58And that's what Easter's all about.
26:00We don't have a Savior whose remains are languished
26:04in some faraway, unknown tomb.
26:07Jesus Christ is living today.
26:09And the same excitement that he brought to those children,
26:11he waits to bring to us
26:13if we will just come to him
26:14with our arms open to receive him.
