00:00And they will need to give everything.
00:02It was level in Lyon and now Ruben Amarim's side simply have to find the edge here at Old Trafford
00:08to keep their season alive.
00:10And he names an unchanged team from last week.
00:12So Andre Onana is back in goal after having the weekend off in the Premier League to disconnect.
00:18Up front, Joshua Zerksy suffered a season-ending injury against Newcastle.
00:22So it's Rasmus Hoyland who leads the line.
00:25The fans of this club know that tonight is very much win or bust.
00:33Manchester United, without European football, just seems unthinkable, doesn't it?
00:37It's only happened once in 35 years, but it could become reality if they don't come out on top this evening.
00:44It's the second leg of Manchester United against Lyon for a place in the Europa League semi-final.
00:50And it kicks off in just under an hour.
00:52Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes are pitch side with me.
00:57Guys, you're very used to big European nights.
01:01This isn't the Champions League, but just how big does this competition and this match feel right now for Manchester United?
01:08Well, this is it. We were talking earlier. This is it.
01:10This is the season kind of rests on this game now, on this tournament.
01:14So they have to get through. They have to win.
01:16I'm quite confident. I've got more confidence as the day's gone by.
01:19I woke up quite negative. The closer I've got to the stadium, I've got more confidence.
01:23I'm starting to believe. And I'm hoping.
01:26I'm hoping for a good performance, but most importantly, a victorious night.
01:30They are the only side unbeaten in all European competitions this season.
01:34So they are getting the job done in Europe, Paul.
01:36Do you expect a win? Are you as confident as Rio?
01:38Yes, I am. Funnily enough.
01:41Yeah, look, I think they'll win this game.
01:42I think being at Old Trafford is a big boost for them.
01:45And as you say, for some reason in this competition, they haven't been that bad, actually.
01:49They've actually done all right.
01:50Got some really good results away from all.
01:51I think last week was a really good result, although disappointed to let the equaliser in late time.
01:57But every single day in training, as Rio say, it looks a bit messy.
02:00I mean, nobody to hit up front.
02:01Yeah.
02:01What can you do? You just can't get it.
02:03There's nowhere to go.
02:04And eventually, you're going to get the ball taken off you.
02:05It's like a training session. You play a training session.
02:07Sometimes you play one where it is wide, but there's no depth to it.
02:12No thoughts of scoring a goal.
02:14Exactly. There's no thoughts of scoring a goal or getting out from that press or around that press.
02:17It's about just trying to play intricate passes.
02:20There comes a point in the game in real football where you have to go longer and go over or around the press.
02:25There was no option of doing that in that clip especially.
02:28And that signified a lot of what was wrong.
02:29When you mention the errors that the players are making in these games,
02:33how do you correct them when there's so many from lots of different players in different positions?
02:38Just even that clip there is a great example.
02:40You're not giving the players a chance to make less errors.
02:44You're giving them a chance for teams to get onto them to create more errors for them.
02:47I think it's about simplifying it to give them the chance to bring less pressure to them
02:51to have more confidence being built through that.
02:54Do you agree?
02:54Making errors in the wrong area of the pitch.
02:57You see the Masraoui incident there.
02:59Did Lenny Yoro as well when he tries to step up for offside?
03:01You can't do that in them areas of the pitch.
03:04And obviously with a goalkeeper, we are going to mention later on as well.
03:07It came out for that game.
03:08I thought it was quite good management because we know how lively it can be in Newcastle.
03:11I thought that was quite a good thing for him.
03:13Well, we'll see tonight, won't we?
03:15But I think it was quite a good manager.
03:17Hopefully he was right.
03:18Yeah, we'll talk a lot more about Andre Onana a little bit later on.
03:22But hopefully Manchester United will be much better on the pitch tonight.
03:26Ahead of this big game this evening, Ruben Amirim had a sit-down chat with us yesterday.
03:30This is what he had to say to Danny Jomerson.
03:34He can change not just this season, but the next season.
03:38We want to win.
03:39It's really important for our club to win a competition, to have European football in next year.
03:44But again, there are some things that are more important to change in this moment
03:49and to take Manchester United to the top.
03:52Well, a lot of things.
03:54We need to work on things inside the club, outside the club.
03:59You felt all this year with a lot of changes in the staff, in the club, ticket prices, all these things.
04:07We are changing.
04:08We are thinking about the club, but the structure needs to be fixed.
04:12And then we need to start with the small things in training.
04:15The standards like we are talking about, that things are more important sometimes than to play Champions League next year.
04:21So, Ruben Amirim's choosing to focus on...
04:26You're all right there?
04:26Yes.
04:27Get ready, Paul.
04:28We're live on telly.
04:29I was listening intently.
04:30I was listening.
04:30You were listening intently, because I said, make sure you have a listen to this,
04:33because Ruben Amirim there talking a bit more about the bigger picture, isn't he?
04:37And he's saying that a lot needs to change inside the club and outside the club.
04:42So, what would your priorities be, seeing as you listened so carefully?
04:45Yeah, that's a tough question.
04:47There's so many things to change in that playing squad.
04:51I try to think back to when you watch his Lisbon team,
04:54and you think about the real energy and physicality that that team had.
04:59This team seems totally the opposite.
05:01They don't look physically like they're strong enough.
05:04They come up against other teams that look more powerful.
05:06They look fitter.
05:07And quality, quality has to come with it with a club like this.
05:10I think forward plays is a big one for me, Rio.
05:13I know you might think defence.
05:15I'm sure defence at every part of the pitch.
05:18Defence, midfield, goalkeeper looks like it could be an issue as well.
05:21But this club should be.
05:22This club should have four brilliant centre-forwards.
05:24I know that's what happened in our days.
05:26And maybe you don't play two, maybe three centre-forwards now,
05:29because you're only playing one up front most of the time.
05:31But the lack of goals, the lack of quality in the final third of the pitch,
05:34I think that's...
05:35Because you can get away with that sometimes.
05:37As long as you've got a team capable of scoring goals,
05:39you've always got a chance of winning games now.
05:41They're conceding quite a few goals,
05:43twos, threes, fours at Newcastle.
05:46It's not easy for this team,
05:47because you think you've got Ganacho,
05:49you've got Highland,
05:50who hasn't really been scoring.
05:51Ganacho scored two in 30 games or something.
05:53You've only got Bruno Fernandes who you can rely on.
05:55So forward plays is a major importance.
05:58Paul, just to touch on that,
05:59I think, imagine when we were playing,
06:01that feeling of where are we going to score from,
06:04how are we going to score,
06:05that's a bad feeling to have in a football club.
06:08And then obviously that creates nervous energy throughout the team.
06:11And it's only so you're sitting there going,
06:13it's like sitting ducks thinking,
06:14well, we're going to concede at some point
06:15because we can't score.
06:16We can't put this team on the back foot.
06:18We can't run over them.
06:19So where do we go?
06:20Yeah, goals have to come from everywhere.
06:22Not just because you're playing centre.
06:23I'm an older midfield player.
06:24I'm not allowed to go and score the goals.
06:26They have to come from...
06:27You can't...
06:27Casimiro might score from the off-free kick.
06:30I can't see Ugarte getting a goal.
06:31I can't see the wing-backs getting a goal.
06:33They're OK defensive and look quite solid.
06:35But when you get into that final third of the pitch,
06:37they just don't have the quality.
06:38So would that create a nervousness at the back as well
06:41if you're not confident in the forward players?
06:43Yeah, because you're sitting there going,
06:44well, we're just going to try and stop people scoring,
06:46but we know we can't score.
06:47So at some point,
06:48the quality of the other team in this Premier League
06:50or in any team you're playing against now,
06:52they're going to get chances
06:53and they're inevitably going to get a goal.
06:55So it just creates a real...
06:57The nervous energy then filters out throughout the stadium.
06:59And that's what you get when you come here at the moment.
07:01And I think the manager would be...
07:03One of his biggest surprises is that.
07:05The lack of physicality within the squad,
07:08the lack of goals and creativity,
07:09I think he's sitting there going,
07:10I didn't know it was this bad.
07:11I 100% feel that he would feel like that,
07:14given what he's seen.
07:15OK, that's the guy's initial thoughts on Manchester United.
07:18But coming up in a couple of minutes,
07:19we're going to get the lowdown on Lyon.
07:21Here they are arriving at Old Trafford a bit earlier.
07:24They have taken confidence from last week's last-minute equaliser,
07:26but they are a club with a huge debt,
07:29which is putting them at risk of relegation
07:31and who probably need Champions League football just as much,
07:35if not more, than Manchester United.
07:38Plus.
07:38Oh!
07:39Oh!
07:40Oh!
07:40Oh!
07:41Oh!
07:41Oh!
07:42Once upon a time, Lyon were European heavyweights.
07:45But that Champions League nostalgia
07:46for the days of Juninho, Ben Affer and Govue,
07:49it's a dimming memory here in the City of Lights.
07:55Lyon's season's been absolutely chaotic,
07:57whether it's been on the field or even on the outside.
08:00We've followed financial issues.
08:01We've had two different coaches this season.
08:04It's possible we won't even be playing in the League One next year.
08:07We could be in the second division.
08:09There's been a lot of debts.
08:10There's a lot of money issues.
08:12It's clear what they need to do is qualify in the Champions League.
08:14That off-field pressure was too much
08:17for the immensely popular former youth coach, Pierre Sage.
08:20His replacement, the recently fired AC Milan coach,
08:24Paolo Fonseca.
08:26I don't think I met one person
08:28that wasn't annoyed by the decision.
08:29Pierre Sage brought the team
08:31from last in the Championship last year
08:33to qualified in Europa League this year.
08:36But I think now Fonseca has been adopted,
08:39as we can say.
08:40He's winning.
08:41He's one of the best coaches to have started for Lyon
08:43in a very long time.
08:45When we arrived here,
08:47we were far from the European competitions.
08:51In this moment, we recover many points.
08:55I think the team improved a lot.
08:58We are full of confidence also,
09:01and we are ready to finish the season in the best way.
09:03Even new managers get drawn into the chaos.
09:07Just five games into his tenure,
09:09in the dying seconds of a win against Brest,
09:12he was red-carded,
09:13and according to the referee, Benoit Mio,
09:15intimidated him and attempted a headbutt.
09:18The result?
09:19A long ban.
09:21In Ligue 1.
09:21He got his punishment.
09:23He won't be in the locker room until September,
09:26and he won't be on the pitch until November.
09:28For me, it doesn't change almost nothing.
09:31I have the ambitions,
09:33and I prepare the games in the Championship
09:34like I prepare for it.
09:36Not only essential,
09:37it's almost the only way.
09:43Maybe the only way for Lyon.
09:45This is an enormous game for the French side.
09:47Our French football expert Julian Laurent
09:49has come down from Cloud Neuf
09:50after Paris Saint-Germain's win on Tuesday.
09:53Just enough time to discuss their problems.
09:55These financial issues that Lyon have,
09:57how serious are they?
09:58Is Champions League qualification
09:59the only real way out?
10:00It will help massively
10:01because they need 80 million euros.
10:03Simple as that.
10:03So if you don't get the money
10:05from the Champions League,
10:05then you will have to sell
10:06some of your best players,
10:08the most valuable, certainly,
10:09like for Fana, like Cherki,
10:10maybe Mikotadze.
10:12If you get the Champions League
10:13and guarantee there,
10:14so top three finish in Ligue 1,
10:15so second or third,
10:16because PSG are champions,
10:17then you are guaranteed
10:18at least maybe 40, 50 million.
10:20So that will ease the pressure for sure.
10:22But financially,
10:22they're in a dire state for sure.
10:24It's probably an important point
10:25to make as well
10:26that this sort of game,
10:28one of France's big export markets
10:29is the Premier League.
10:30So a big performance
10:31from one of those duels tonight,
10:33that could add a few zeros
10:35to the end of a price tag.
10:36Absolutely.
10:36If you're right on Cherki,
10:37and he's the one,
10:38because also he wants to leave,
10:40and his price should not be too high
10:43because I think he's ready
10:44and he will have one year left
10:45on his contract.
10:46But this is the audition,
10:48really.
10:49This is here.
10:49The first leg was a little bit disappointing
10:51from a Cherki point of view
10:52because he can do much better
10:53than what we saw
10:53outside of that goal in the first leg.
10:56Tonight is the big test.
10:57And if he shows today
10:58what he can do with the ball,
10:59one of the greatest technicians
11:01in Europe right now,
11:02right forward, left forward,
11:03he's got everything,
11:04then I think there's a lot of English clubs
11:06who are already looking at him
11:07that will probably go to a step higher.
11:09You mentioned the first leg performance
11:11last week was a little bit disappointing.
11:13What's the reaction been like
11:15to it in France?
11:17I think it felt like,
11:18and the players felt it,
11:19it was a missed opportunity
11:20because United were there
11:21for the taking.
11:21They were not great either.
11:23And I think Lyon felt that
11:24a better performance
11:26would have got them
11:27maybe a win
11:27and maybe not tie over,
11:29but certainly coming here
11:30with more comfortable positions.
11:32So they still believe
11:33they can qualify tonight.
11:35They are really, really
11:36calm and confident.
11:38Certainly what I got today
11:39from the squad,
11:40it would be a great game
11:41because they're a team
11:42that moved the ball so well.
11:43Fonseca is a great coach
11:44and this is a really talented
11:46young team as well.
11:47You're, I know from listening
11:48to one of your many radio shows
11:50that you do, Shields,
11:51you're extremely confident
11:52that Lyon can make it through tonight.
11:54Why?
11:55I think the way they move the ball,
11:57the way they are pressed resistance.
11:58So if United try to go high
12:00and United have to win the game,
12:01the 2-2 draw from the first leg
12:02is not enough.
12:03So United would have to go,
12:04especially here,
12:04our Trafford would have to go
12:06and get them.
12:07United can,
12:08Lyon can move the ball around them
12:09and if they do that,
12:10they will create chances.
12:11They're a team that can score
12:11many, many goals.
12:13Listen, if they make it through,
12:14it'll be another French team
12:15in the UEFA semifinals.
12:17It's been five years
12:18since that's happened
12:18in any UEFA competition
12:20and those two teams
12:21that made it through back then,
12:22PSG and Lyon.
12:24Ah, well, there we go.
12:27And there's no doubt
12:27that Lyon are desperate
12:28to get through
12:29as the guys have just been saying.
12:30They're probably going to be
12:31trying to put pressure
12:32the players on Andre Onana
12:34just like they did last week.
12:35But he isn't the first
12:37Manchester United goalkeeper
12:39to drop a clangour
12:40against Lyon
12:41and he's not even the second either.
12:42The first meeting
12:43between Manchester United
12:44and Lyon back in 2004,
12:46you both played in this game.
12:48Tim Howard, remember this?
12:50Yeah.
12:52A few choice words
12:53after that game.
12:54But...
12:54Can you repeat them?
12:56These things happen,
12:57do you know what I mean?
12:57But it's about the team
12:58being together
12:59and the difference we had,
13:01we had a confident group there
13:02who understood
13:02how to get through
13:03and win games
13:04and could recover
13:05in situations like that.
13:06He was then dropped
13:07for the next game.
13:09Yeah.
13:09Roy Carroll.
13:10Roy Carroll came in.
13:11Roy did great as well,
13:12didn't he?
13:13Yeah.
13:13We was having a spell
13:17of...
13:18I nearly said
13:18bad goalkeeper.
13:19Goalkeepers didn't quite work then.
13:21It took a while
13:22from Schmeichel,
13:23obviously,
13:23going through bar tears
13:24and it probably wasn't
13:26until we got to Edwin
13:28in Van der Sar
13:28where that position
13:30was secured,
13:32if you like.
13:32But as me and Rio
13:33were saying before,
13:34mistakes like that,
13:35we can accept that
13:37because we always knew
13:38on the other end,
13:38we're going to go
13:39and score goals.
13:39I just don't see that
13:40with this team.
13:41Yeah, and Rio,
13:42you insisted
13:43that if we're going back
13:43to that game
13:44that we better
13:45show your assist.
13:46Well, you have to show
13:46both sides of the game,
13:47guys.
13:48You know what I mean?
13:48You can't just look
13:48at the negatives.
13:49You've got to look
13:49at the positives
13:50and see what people can do.
13:51And it was just
13:52fortunately enough
13:52that in this type of game,
13:53you've got someone
13:54who can move
13:54and shift the ball
13:55like that
13:55and just put it
13:55to the back post.
13:56Not bad footwork.
13:57Yeah, you're not
13:57every now and again.
13:58You've got to put your
13:58bears in there,
13:59a little shimmy there.
14:00Yeah, look at Biersley.
14:01Biersley, oh.
14:02Beautiful.
14:03Terrible defender.
14:11Oh, good old days.
14:12There we go.
14:13What you could do,
14:14what you do for Rude now?
14:15Watch that cross now
14:16from what you see today.
14:17There's three centre-forwards
14:18in the box there.
14:19It was Rude,
14:20Wayne Rooney,
14:20and Alan Smith.
14:21We're not leaving you out,
14:22Scalzi.
14:22Couple of crucial...
14:23Could you not find
14:24anything better than this?
14:26We tried our best.
14:27I'm doing Rio's job
14:28on the line.
14:31And Tim's job,
14:32to be fair.
14:32I don't know what Tim is.
14:34Oh, I love it, guys.
14:35Janinho.
14:36Remember him?
14:36Janinho.
14:37What a player.
14:37Could hit a ball,
14:38couldn't he?
14:38Yeah.
14:39Are you against, Scalzi?
14:40Where's Rio?
14:40Where's Rio gone?
14:41Scalzi again?
14:42Where's Rio?
14:43See, I had to go behind our keeper
14:45because I knew they weren't great.
14:47That's what you call
14:48that team-mates
14:49looking after you,
14:49that.
14:50That's what you need sometimes,
14:51you know what I mean?
14:52It is.
14:52But, yeah.
14:54I didn't look after you two,
14:55did I?
14:55I went up and got myself
14:56a Coca-Cola before the game,
14:58didn't even bring you down
14:58a drink, did I?
14:59I noticed that.
14:59Very selfish.
15:00Sorry, guys.
15:00Individual.
15:01Better teamwork,
15:01noted for next time.
15:02All right.
15:03To be fair,
15:04you have come up against
15:04some brilliant Lyon players
15:06in your time.
15:07Benzema.
15:07Benzema's got a great goal,
15:10didn't he?
15:10He was announced against us.
15:12Remember,
15:12we heard a lot about him
15:14and then he scored that goal.
15:15I'm not sure where you were.
15:16He was in and around him somewhere,
15:18but, yeah,
15:18good player.
15:19Really good player.
15:19All right.
15:20By the way,
15:20there was a big cheer
15:21a couple of minutes ago
15:21because Man United
15:22have come out to warm up.
15:24Lyon players are not quite out yet,
15:25but after the break,
15:26we're going to be getting
15:27ourselves onto the pitch
15:28to get a closer look
15:29at the players
15:29and taking a look
15:30at Lyon's latest start
15:32in the making.
15:33He got a stoppage time
15:34equaliser last week,
15:35Ryan Cherky.
15:36My only goal is to look at the TV
15:48and they say,
15:50wow.
15:50Cherky is a real danger.
15:52He's so difficult to contain.
15:54Come on again.
15:55You have a good idea.
15:55I know what's going to happen.
15:58It's like if I had taken a picture
16:01of what's happening around me
16:02and I'm going to play for the Olympic
16:03Lyon.
16:04It's the biggest of my dreams
16:05that I've made.
16:06It's the street,
16:07it's the five,
16:08it's my brothers,
16:09it's my friends,
16:11it's all.
16:13I'm going to be a young man
16:15who just wants to give
16:16a good heart to them.
16:17Ryan Cherky saves the day
16:19for Lyon.
16:20I'm a Lyon.
16:20I'm a Lyon.
16:20I'm going to be a Lyon.
16:22We're in pretty desperate need
16:31of something to cheer,
16:32but a win tonight
16:33would mean only Rangers
16:35or Athletic Bilbao
16:36stand between them
16:37and a Europa League final.
16:40Travelling Lyon fans
16:41have some happy memories
16:42against English teams,
16:43actually.
16:44They haven't seen their side
16:45lose away in this competition
16:46for nearly 10 years.
16:50And we've made our way
16:51onto the pitch.
16:52Perfect timing,
16:53that Paul.
16:54Did you hit someone?
16:55About the ball again.
16:56He missed the target again.
16:58He missed the target again.
16:59I got him.
17:01The Lyon players
17:02are just warming up
17:02behind us.
17:04Nemanja Matic
17:04came over for a quick chat.
17:06Did you have any words
17:06with him about his
17:07war of words last week
17:09with Andre Onana?
17:10What did you say?
17:11I just told him to leave
17:11our goalkeeper alone.
17:13That was it.
17:14But now he looks well.
17:15He was some player,
17:16Matic.
17:16Obviously played against him
17:18quite a few times.
17:19Me and Rio
17:19when he was at Chelsea
17:20and very stylish.
17:22I think he's just saying
17:22he's nearly 37.
17:23He's got another year left.
17:24So he looks fit.
17:25He looks strong enough.
17:26Hopefully he doesn't
17:27have a good night tonight.
17:29Right.
17:29From an attacking perspective,
17:30there's one player
17:31who really stands out
17:32for Lyon Rio.
17:33Ryan Cherkin.
17:34He got the late equaliser
17:36last week in the first leg.
17:38What makes him such a threat?
17:40I mean,
17:40in a moment,
17:41in a time where we're talking
17:42about systematic football
17:43and where players are becoming
17:45a little bit more robotic,
17:46that's the common theme
17:47of conversation at the minute.
17:48This guy stands out
17:49from someone who doesn't
17:50want to be that.
17:51in the Premier League, Paul.
17:52Will he relish an occasion
17:53like this?
17:55He should be.
17:56He's in the shop window,
17:57really.
17:57I know Lyon,
17:58as I just spoke about
17:59in the last part,
18:00they've got some financial
18:00issues as well.
18:01So I think he will be one player
18:03they can make a few quid on.
18:05This is a big night
18:05for him tonight.
18:06If he performs here,
18:07look,
18:08if Manchester United
18:08and I'm sure they'll be
18:10having a good look at him
18:11tonight,
18:11but there'll be many
18:11other clubs in England
18:13having a good look at him.
18:14Manchester United's goal
18:15scoring issues
18:16still continue,
18:17Rio.
18:18Rasmus Hoyland
18:18starts up front tonight.
18:19Just one goal
18:20in 26 matches.
18:23That's in all competitions.
18:24What's he missing right now?
18:26Confidence
18:26and remembering
18:28how to score.
18:29I think it's quite simple.
18:30I think it's a difficult time
18:33for him,
18:33among others,
18:34at the football club.
18:35But it's,
18:36I mean,
18:36I remember when I played,
18:37I wasn't a forward,
18:38but I think it goes back
18:39down to confidence.
18:40What was I doing
18:41when I was lacking
18:41a bit of confidence?
18:42It was going back to basics.
18:44What got me here,
18:44the fundamentals,
18:45working hard in training,
18:47being consistent
18:47in all those things
18:48to try and earn
18:49a little bit of luck
18:50and a little bit of time
18:51in the game
18:52where it comes to you
18:52and it goes in
18:53off your bum maybe.
18:54And then all of a sudden
18:55you start building
18:56that confidence
18:56over that time.
18:57But we've been saying
18:58this for a while now
18:58and it's just difficult.
18:59Yeah,
18:59we've been saying it
19:00for ages.
19:01You say he needs
19:02that confidence
19:03and he needs
19:03that bit of luck.
19:05But too many times,
19:06he's not in the right area
19:06of the pitch,
19:07Rio,
19:07is he?
19:07The amount of times
19:08he's in his own half,
19:09trying to do a defensive job,
19:10which you understand.
19:11There's a lack of service.
19:13I remember when he first came,
19:14I thought,
19:15we've almost got an Alan Shearer.
19:16I know it's probably
19:17a big word
19:18comparing him to Alan Shearer,
19:20but I thought,
19:20he's a big centre forward,
19:21he's physically strong,
19:22he can run in behind.
19:23He loves crosses as well.
19:26He doesn't get crosses.
19:27Garnaccio doesn't cross the ball.
19:29Dogger really doesn't
19:30cross the ball in much quality.
19:31I think Darlow's capable,
19:33but the lad,
19:34he doesn't know
19:35what's coming.
19:35He doesn't know
19:36what he's going to get.
19:36There's no rhythm
19:38to the player.
19:38There's nothing to suit
19:41the way he wants
19:42to play football.
19:42The options in attack
19:44were already limited, Rio.
19:46So how frustrating is it
19:47that we're seeing
19:49some of Manchester United's
19:50attacking players
19:51out on loan
19:52thriving elsewhere
19:53when United are
19:54in this situation?
19:55Yeah, but that's just
19:56the way it goes.
19:56I think, listen,
19:57those players
19:57weren't performing here.
19:59There was reasons.
19:59The manager spoke
20:00in his press conference
20:00yesterday about individuals
20:02and why they're not here.
20:03And you can't just say
20:05because they're doing well
20:05outside of him
20:06in a different environment,
20:07oh, they would have
20:07been doing well here.
20:08I don't think things
20:09would have changed
20:09for them players here
20:10in this current regime,
20:11in this environment.
20:12It wasn't suited to them
20:13or they wasn't suited
20:14to whatever you want
20:15to put it.
20:16So sometimes you do
20:17have to go elsewhere
20:18to recapture form
20:20and to find yourself.
20:21That's just the situation
20:22and the way it is
20:22where the world
20:23for some people.
20:23So I think you've just
20:24got to delete those guys
20:25in terms of what
20:26they're doing now
20:27and what effect
20:28it would have here.
20:29What's here right now?
20:30Why isn't it working?
20:31And I think that's
20:31what they've got
20:32to get to the root of.
20:32I was just going to say
20:34that that's why we're
20:35talking about this
20:35because the lack of goals.
20:37We're coming to the game
20:38tonight thinking about
20:39options for Manchester
20:40United in forward areas.
20:41There isn't any.
20:42There's Bruno,
20:43which Bruno would play
20:44anyway even if them
20:45long players was there.
20:46There's Hoyland,
20:47there's Ganacho.
20:48What they've scored
20:48between them two
20:49in 30 games or something
20:50is just not good.
20:51That's why you look
20:52at them playing
20:53and you think,
20:53oh, I wouldn't mind
20:54having Rashford here.
20:55I wouldn't mind
20:55having Sancho here.
20:56Even wouldn't mind
20:57having Anthony here.
20:58So that's when you come
21:00and you just think
21:00it's a little bit
21:01predictable.
21:02But that man in the picture,
21:03if Bruno is not
21:04at his football club
21:05wearing the shake-up
21:07in the relegation battle,
21:08I'm telling you
21:09because without him
21:10there's no hope
21:11in terms of an attacking
21:12force of this team.
21:14The numbers we talked about
21:15and we're stressing
21:15with the attacking players
21:16are so low.
21:17Again, he's the only
21:18inspiring factor
21:20in all the games you watch.
21:21If he doesn't cook,
21:22if he doesn't come in
21:23and start performing,
21:24I don't see any way
21:25in which we're going to
21:26get anything out of the game.
21:27You might get something
21:28a flash from Gonaccio,
21:29but he's the main guy.
21:30All right, guys.
21:31It is a big night
21:32for Manchester United
21:33and we're going to be hearing
21:34from Ruben Amarim
21:35after the break
21:36and also taking a look
21:37at the goalkeeper situation.
21:39Wasn't a great audition
21:40at the weekend
21:41for Al-Thai by Indir,
21:42but Andre Onana
21:43is back in goal tonight
21:44and after a bit
21:45of a war of words
21:46between him and Leon's
21:47Nemanja Matic last week,
21:49United's number one
21:50may have a point to prove
21:51after the first leg.
21:54Onana.
21:55One of the worst goalkeepers,
21:59you know.
22:02Just the United's
22:03entire season
22:04and their Champions League
22:06hopes for next season
22:07rests on tonight's
22:08quarter-finals second leg
22:10against Leon,
22:10which is getting underway
22:11in around about 15 or so minutes.
22:14And Ruben Amarim
22:14has named an unchanged team
22:16from last week's first leg.
22:17So Andre Onana
22:18is back in goal
22:19after his Premier League
22:20rest at the weekend
22:21and it's a big night
22:23in front of goal.
22:24That's what's needed
22:25for Rasmus Hoyland
22:26as well,
22:27who leads the line
22:28for Ruben Amarim tonight.
22:29So here's the thoughts
22:30of the United boss now
22:31with Danny Jamieson.
22:33Ruben, you've named
22:34the same XI
22:35that started the first leg
22:36last week.
22:37Was that an easy decision?
22:38Were you happy
22:38with the general play
22:39of that XI out in France?
22:41Yes, I think we did well.
22:43I think also
22:43that we can do better.
22:46That's why we worked
22:47this week
22:48to do better.
22:49And then we have
22:50some players
22:51that cannot start.
22:52So we need also
22:54to think about
22:55every possibility,
22:57the extra time,
22:58all these things.
22:59When we have
22:59a busy schedule,
23:00everything,
23:01we think about
23:02every situation
23:03of the game
23:03and I felt
23:04that is the best XI.
23:05As you told us yesterday,
23:06Andre Onana comes back in.
23:08He clearly has your faith
23:09and the faith
23:09of his teammates.
23:11How much do you need
23:11to repay that faith
23:12of the performance
23:13this evening?
23:14I think you just need
23:14to focus on
23:15doing a good game.
23:17And as a professional,
23:19he's our player
23:20and he's in the starting XI.
23:24Leon coming here,
23:25are you expecting
23:25anything different
23:26from their approach
23:27compared to last week?
23:28I think they have
23:30a Portuguese coach
23:31so they will change
23:32something.
23:33But they played
23:34with the same XI
23:36so they will have
23:38more or less
23:38the same approach.
23:39They will change
23:40some things
23:40but we will see.
23:42From your perspective,
23:43from your team's
23:44perspective tonight,
23:45what do you need
23:46to do well?
23:46Where will the game
23:47be won and lost?
23:48I think we need
23:49to be really smart
23:50and we know
23:50the last game
23:52they let the goalkeeper
23:54without pressure,
23:55they let Harry Maguire
23:57without pressure
23:57and we have to be patient
23:59and we know
23:59that our fans
24:00are going to be
24:01really anxious,
24:02want us to go forward
24:04and we have to be smart
24:05and to cope
24:06without pressure
24:06to do a good game.
24:09Wish you the best of luck.
24:10Thank you very much.
24:12Well, a week after
24:13the first leg,
24:15Andre Onana
24:15is still in the headlines,
24:17still in the spotlight.
24:19Was it the right risk
24:20that the manager
24:21had to take Rio
24:22to rest him in the Premier League
24:23at the weekend
24:24and then bring him back in
24:25for this game tonight?
24:26I think, listen,
24:27in both of our careers
24:28we've been in situations
24:28and seen players
24:29have to be taken out
24:30of the firing line
24:31for a bit.
24:31I think that was
24:32a great opportunity
24:32for the manager
24:33to do that.
24:35Full voice, by the way.
24:37Loads of good support
24:37in here today.
24:38Keep the ball away from him.
24:40Honestly,
24:41don't even pass it back to him.
24:42I know that's the way
24:43they want to play.
24:44Get the ball up the pitch
24:44to Highland.
24:45You know what I would say?
24:47I like playing with goalkeepers.
24:48I don't want to see him much.
24:50I don't want to hear about him.
24:51I don't want to worry about him.
24:52I used to worry about him
24:53a little bit.
24:54Roy Carroll.
24:55He's a great guy.
24:57But the thing is,
24:58when confidence goes,
25:00to rebuild it,
25:00you have to play games
25:02and no one talk about you.
25:04You don't want the spotlight
25:05on you in the games.
25:06When they call the pod,
25:07make a save,
25:07get up,
25:08get on with it quickly.
25:09Not having no big flashy things
25:10because that's when
25:11problems start arising.
25:13Yeah, exactly.
25:14Don't take any risk.
25:15You can't.
25:15When the ball comes into him,
25:17he does like to wait
25:18a little bit.
25:18If there's one nervous moment,
25:20if a forward gets a block,
25:21the crowd will be on it.
25:22That team will be right
25:23and I'm sure
25:24they'll be shooting on sight.
25:25What's it like
25:25for the rest of the team
25:27when you've got a goalkeeper
25:29that at times
25:29can be a bit erratic?
25:30Nerve-wracking.
25:31It's nerve-wracking.
25:32And then that's why
25:33the closer you get
25:34to your own goal,
25:35you want more calm.
25:37So that's why I say
25:38you want a quiet goalkeeper
25:39in terms of like
25:40big action.
25:41You don't want big action,
25:41flashy pants.
25:42You want someone
25:43who's going to be very secure,
25:45talk to you,
25:45be comfortable.
25:46That when you pass the ball
25:47back to him,
25:48you know that there's not
25:49going to be no madness
25:50going on.
25:50But the problem in the way
25:51you play football today,
25:53they're all about risk.
25:54They're all about putting
25:54your foot on the ball
25:55and drawing your opponents
25:56onto you.
25:56I don't want to really
25:57see that today
25:58when a goalkeeper's lacking
25:59in confidence like he is
26:00at the moment.
26:01No flashy pants?
26:02Absolutely no flashy pants.
26:03It's a bit more concerning
26:05for a defender.
26:06I was never that concerned
26:07about a goalkeeper
26:08because I knew
26:08we'd score goals.
26:09It's time for kick-off, guys.
26:13Listen to these fans.
26:14They are in full voice in here.
26:17The noise has just gone up
26:18a notch in here
26:19as we get closer to kick-off
26:20and the fans are desperately
26:22hoping that their European
