00:00U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday that Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell would leave if I asked him to.
00:08Trump has at times threatened to try to fire Powell.
00:14His comments come a day after the Fed chief said at an event at Economic Club at Chicago
00:20that the Fed's independence is very widely understood and supported in Washington and in Congress where it really matters.
00:30You said that the termination of Jerome Powell could not come fast enough.
00:34He says he won't leave even if you ask him to.
00:37Oh, he'll leave. If I ask him to, he'll be out of there.
00:39Do you believe he's out of the house for moving? Did I try to do that?
00:42I don't think he's doing the job. He's too late, always too late, a little slow, and I'm not happy with him.
00:51I let him know it, and if I want him out, he'll be out of there real fast, believe me.
00:58So prices haven't gone up. The only thing that's gone up, actually, is interest rates,
01:03because we have a Federal Reserve Chairman that is playing politics,
01:08somebody that I've never been very fond of, actually.
01:11But he's playing politics. Interest rates should be down now.
01:15They should be coming down.
01:17In Europe, as you know, they reduced them, I guess, seven times.
01:21It looks like they're going to reduce them again and again and again, but our guy wants to play cute.
01:27But interest rates are pretty much even.
01:31Maybe they went up just a slight bit, but that's the only thing.
01:33But that's because of the Federal Reserve, because they're not very smart people.
01:38Go ahead, please.
01:39Do you regret nominating him, Jerome Powell?
01:42Look, in the first four years, we had the greatest economy in the history of our country.
01:48The stock market went up 88 points.
01:51I think he's terrible, but I can't complain,
01:54because we had the most successful administration economically in the history of our country.
01:59I think we're going to do even better this time,
02:01because you will see that the numbers that we're taking in are astronomical.
02:06We're taking in tremendous amounts of money with the tariffs.
02:10We were treated very unfairly on trade,
02:12and countries are having a hard time getting used to the fact that they can't do that to us anymore,
02:18because we have a real president.
02:20We have a president that understands.
02:22It is not clear Trump has the power to remove Powell,
02:25who is presidentally appointed but Senate confirmed.
02:29An effort by the president to remove members of other independent agency
02:33is currently before the Supreme Court,
02:35but Powell on Wednesday said he felt the case would not change the Fed's longstanding independence in monetary policy,
02:43something that has brought bipartisan support.
02:45Contrary to Trump's assertion that Powell would leave if asked,
02:49Powell, a former private equity investor with enough independent wealth to fund his own legal challenge,
02:55has said he had no plans to vacate the job before his term ends in May of next year.
