The city of Bristol is committed to becoming a greener city. And-- Bristol waste is doing just that in 2025! Bristol Waste in collaboration with Podback have officially launched a recycling scheme for coffee pods across Bristol's recycling centres. Bristol Waste have done this to help to reduce the environmental impact of Bristol's morning brew- as coffee pods make up a large part of Bristol's waste. But now locals will have no excuses to recycle their coffee pods.

00:00So today I am here at Bristol Waste, who have just launched a new scheme to help Bristolians recycle their coffee pods,
00:09which account for a massive amount of waste within the city.
00:12Let's chat to the Bristol Waste team to find out all about this scheme.
00:17Well, I'm responsible for laying down the strategy for the business, which is very much based upon our vision,
00:24which is a cleaner, safer and more sustainable city in Bristol.
00:28So we have recently had our business plan approved by the council officers and by the councillors,
00:36and we're looking to roll that out to increase our recycling rates across the city.
00:40We're launching a coffee pod recycling scheme.
00:43So residents in Bristol, if you use a coffee pod machine, you can now bring your coffee pods to our recycling centres,
00:49put them in these containers and they'll be recycled.
00:52Currently, we recycle 47% of the resources in the city,
00:56and we want to increase that over the coming years.
00:59And this is one of our initiatives to try and take coffee pods out of the black bins
01:04and actually put them into the recycle chain and reuse them.
01:08Yeah, so we're launching this in partnership with Podback,
01:10and they work with the big coffee pod producers to provide a recycling service.
01:14So at Bristol Waste, we really want to help people recycle as much as possible.
01:19This means now that if you do use a coffee pod machine, you can recycle your coffee pods now.
01:23So Podback was launched about four years ago.
01:27It brings together all the main coffee brands from Nestle and JDE,
01:32who initially formed Podback.
01:34It's a membership organisation, so we now have over 30 coffee brands,
01:38from independent roasters to bigger brands.
01:40And it provides a way for residents to be able to recycle their pods.
01:45So we have retail drop-off that are expanding from our local authority recycling centres as well.
01:50This is done in partnership with both the councillors, the residents of the city,
01:55and with Podback.
01:57It's a not-for-profit organisation backed by the main producers
02:01and some of the local coffee roasters, the Clifton Coffee Roaster Shop, for example.
02:08And for us, it's very important, actually,
02:10we look to increase the recycling rates across the city.
02:13But why is it important for us as a city to be reduced, reusing and recycling?
02:19Let's find out from the Bristol Waste team what this scheme will do for the city.
02:24So it's really important for us at Bristol Waste to help people recycle as much as possible
02:28and make recycling the norm.
02:29So where things can't be reduced or reused,
02:33we want to provide those services so people can recycle them.
02:35It's really important for the environment.
02:37It keeps resources in use and it helps reduce the impact of those coffee pods that people are using.
02:43So this offers residents in Bristol the opportunity to recycle their coffee pods,
02:47whether that's aluminium or plastic,
02:49providing an opportunity to drop them off.
02:53as part of their other recycling services that they're doing here.
