President Donald Trump celebrated Ohio State University’s 2024 national championship at the White House on Jan. 20, coinciding with his second inauguration. In a lively South Lawn event, Trump praised the Buckeyes’ win over Notre Dame and lauded Ohio as a state he “loves.” A light-hearted moment stole the spotlight when Vice President JD Vance, an OSU alum, accidentally fumbled the championship trophy. Trump assured fans that “we’ll never let you down,” while Coach Ryan Day called the visit unforgettable. The team was later invited to see Trump’s revamped Oval Office.

00:00President of the United States, accompanied by the Vice President of the United States and Ryan Day,
00:06head coach of the Ohio State University Buckeyes.
00:30The West West is falling, and it is still a great problem being across the instead of the Vice President of the United States.
00:40The Firsttime Heyers of the United States, hosted by Luuba, to根 be a dispel of Justice Mr. Hicks,
00:45That's a good-looking group behind me.
01:07And they're big.
01:09We're not going to get into any fights with them.
01:12I can guarantee you that.
01:14So I want to just congratulate everybody.
01:16Coach, you have done some job, man.
01:19But today is my great honor to welcome the 2024
01:23College Football National Champions, the Ohio State
01:28University Buckeyes.
01:30And it turns out January 20th was a big day for all of us.
01:41That's true.
01:42That was a big day.
01:44I love that day.
01:46We'll never forget that day.
01:50To Ohio State President Ted Carter.
01:52Ted, where is Ted?
01:53Ted, congratulations.
01:55Good job, Ted.
01:57Wow.
01:58Athletic Director Ross Bjork.
02:01Ross, where is Ross?
02:02There's ... Hi, Ross.
02:06Congratulations.
02:08Did you know they were this good?
02:10He said, absolutely.
02:12That's a good answer.
02:14To Coach Ryan Day, who ... And I have to read this because
02:16this is not part of it, but they gave me a little briefing.
02:20I knew how good a coach ... I didn't know he was that good.
02:23It's Ryan Day, head coach at the Ohio State University.
02:27So here's just a little summary.
02:28Ryan was named head coach in December 2018.
02:32Think of this.
02:32First of all, he's a very young-looking guy, he's got a lot of time left.
02:36In his six seasons as head coach, Day has led the team to nine championship wins.
02:42You don't do that.
02:43He's currently the only coach to lead his team to the college football playoffs four times
02:48since 2019, and his first season as head coach, and Coach Day's overall coaching record 70-10.
02:56So in other words, Ryan, I'd like to be your agent.
02:59I want to represent you.
03:00And he won the big one, right?
03:03He won the big one.
03:04That's the biggest of them all.
03:05That's fantastic.
03:06Let me have your hand here, man.
03:08It's an amazing achievement at a young age, and the entire team and everybody up here,
03:17we want to thank you and congratulate you because this building behind you, there's nothing
03:21like it.
03:22I have a lot of buildings.
03:23This is the one.
03:25This one you can't, this one you can't beat.
03:28The White House.
03:30And I think, you know, the coach was all excited about it.
03:32I threw it out just hoping that it wouldn't be a big deal.
03:35I said, you know, coach, afterwards, if you'd like, but only if you'd like, don't worry
03:39about it.
03:40We could take the team down to the Oval Office and show them what the Oval Office
03:44is because it is spectacular.
03:46And I don't know if the floor can withstand it.
03:50That's the only one.
03:51But we're going to do that.
03:53And, you know, I've done some Trump touches to the Oval Office.
03:57It's a little nicer than it used to be, I think.
04:00And most people, they're a lot nicer.
04:03You're right about that.
04:04No, it's special.
04:06Everything begins, ends, and re-begins at the Oval Office.
04:09And so we're going to take the team down there right when we're finished.
04:12Okay?
04:13If anyone doesn't want to go, that would be okay.
04:14Who's going?
04:16Everybody?
04:17Okay.
04:18Okay.
04:19We look forward to it.
04:20Also with us are many Ohio State fans from my administration.
04:25And the biggest of them all, of course, is our Vice President, who's been fantastic.
04:29A faithful Buckeye alum, J.D. Vance.
04:34J.D., oh, he's something.
04:38But he was such a good student, he didn't stay there for four years.
04:43He got out in two years, number one in his class.
04:45How do you do that?
04:46Do you have any better students than that?
04:49Better football players, yes.
04:50I don't know about students.
04:52But J.D. is doing a great job.
04:53Thanks as well to Secretary of State Marco Rubio for being here.
04:56Marco, you're doing incredible.
05:00As well as Representatives Warren Davidson and Mike Carey.
05:03Fellas, thank you.
05:05Thank you very much.
05:08Governor Mike DeWine.
05:09Mike, where are you?
05:10Where are you?
05:11Hi, Mike.
05:12Doing a great job.
05:14Attorney General Dave Yost.
05:17Dave, congratulations on everything.
05:20Secretary of State Frank LaRose.
05:23Frank, thank you, Frank.
05:25Mayor Trent Conaway.
05:26Mayor Trent Conaway.
05:27I love Trent Conaway.
05:28Where's Trent Conaway?
05:30Where are you, Trent?
05:31Look at him.
05:32That guy from East Palestine.
05:36I think, you know, you're the reason.
05:38They say that was — I visited and Biden didn't.
05:42And when I went there — and I went there right after the problem, right?
05:45And I met Trent, and I love Trent.
05:48But — but a lot of people give that — you a lot of credit for the success that we've
05:52had, because we won in a huge stampede, in a landslide.
05:56And I want to thank you.
05:57And you've been a great mayor, and you went through a lot.
06:00And we took care of you.
06:01We helped.
06:02And other people didn't.
06:03But you were a big stop in the first one.
06:05So thank you for being here.
06:06It's good to see you again.
06:07Thank you very much.
06:08Really nice.
06:09And, of course, the Ohio State legend.
06:11He's a current Lieutenant Governor, Jim Dressel.
06:21Jim?
06:23Where's Jim?
06:24Yeah.
06:26Thank you, Jim.
06:27Thank you very much.
06:28He is a legend.
06:29Thanks, also, to my friends J.J.
06:32Cafaro and the Schottenstein family.
06:34They're here somewhere.
06:36There they are.
06:37Hi, fellas.
06:38Good to have you.
06:40This was a historic year in college football.
06:43Standing together today, these men in the first college — think of that — are the
06:47first college football players in history who can proudly call themselves 12-team playoff
06:53champions.
06:54You're the first ones.
06:55That's right.
06:56You had to go through a lot.
06:57That's not easy.
06:58You're the first ones.
07:00Congratulations, Coach.
07:01This team showed the world that the road to greatness is paved by hard work, sweat,
07:07and often a great deal of adversity.
07:09They had a lot of adversity because — I shouldn't say this — I actually said,
07:13should I leave this line out?
07:15And they said, sir — they're saying, yes, leave it out.
07:18Sir, they want to hear the whole thing — the bad and the good, right?
07:22But many people counted you out, as you know, after the losses against Oregon, which is a great
07:27team.
07:28And that team up north — we won't talk about it — but you refused — but you refused to
07:34let the Buckeye nation down.
07:36You went — you got better and better and tougher and tougher as the season went along.
07:41And after a very strong regular season but with adversity, you held a closed-door players-only meeting.
07:50This extraordinary group rallied together for a single glorious mission — to win four
07:55straight playoff games against the finest teams in college football.
08:00And you were able to do it, obviously.
08:03In the first playoff game, Tennessee quarterback Will Howard scorched the volunteer defense.
08:09I watched that game.
08:10I said, that guy is good.
08:12Defense for 311 yards and completed 24 of 29 passes.
08:20Known for his accuracy.
08:22Strong arm.
08:23But, boy, is he known for his accuracy.
08:24Where is Will?
08:25I want to see this guy.
08:26You are fantastic.
08:27Oh, he's going to be so rich.
08:28Think of that.
08:29To look like that and to play, that's a good combination.
08:32But Will went on to set an all-time college football playoff record with 1,000
08:37150 yards passing.
08:38That's an incredible thing.
08:39Great to meet you.
08:40He's going to be watching you for a long time, I think.
08:41Okay?
08:42We'll be watching him for about 15 years, maybe longer.
08:43The next game was a chance at Redmond's
09:07against the top-ranked Oregon Ducks, which was a tough team.
09:11It was a total team effort by Ohio State.
09:15In the first half, the Buckeyes built an insurmountable 34-point lead,
09:20thanks to the scores from veteran playmaker Tavion Henderson.
09:25Where is he? Tavion.
09:37You think I could beat him in a race? I don't know.
09:43Great going. And Ohio State.
09:47And also your reception's leader, Emeka Ibuka.
09:51Where is he?
09:54Congratulations, fellas. How important were they to your passing?
10:05Oh, they were everything. That's good. You said the right thing.
10:09Then came the team's biggest test in the semifinals, a trip to Texas for the Cotton Bowl.
10:15And that Texas was pretty much rated the number one team at the beginning of the season, right?
10:20So that was a tough team. I know that.
10:22It was neck and neck late in the fourth quarter.
10:25Texas was down a score, but marching in the red zone with two minutes left on the fourth and eight,
10:31with 2 29 on the clock, hometown legend Jack Sawyer.
10:36Boy, that's a good name. Jack Sawyer.
10:40It sounds like the name of a legend, right?
10:43A son of Columbus. We won Columbus by a lot of points.
10:47I like it. Gave the world an all-time great Ohio State football moment.
10:53Most of you know what I'm talking about. In one amazing play, Jack exploded off the line,
10:59strip-sacked the quarterback, which is not easy to do, scooped the fumble recovery, scored an 83-yard touchdown return,
11:08and punched Ohio State's ticket to the championship game.
11:12That's a hell of a thing. You mean you took the ball out of the quarterback's hand?
11:15I don't want to say this. I don't want to make it.
11:18How do you think that other team feels? Not too good.
11:21That's one of those disasters for another team, right?
11:24Oh, that quarterback doesn't feel good. Where is he?
11:27I want to see this guy.
11:28How do you do?
11:29Nice to meet you.
11:30Nice to meet you.
11:31Nice to meet you.
11:32Nice to meet you.
11:33Nice to meet you.
11:34Nice to meet you.
11:35Nice to meet you.
11:36Nice to meet you.
11:37Nice to meet you.
11:38Nice to meet you.
11:39Phenomenal.
11:40Are you that fast that you can get down?
11:41I have some great blockers leading the way.
11:43That's unbelievable, actually.
11:46The size of these guys.
11:48I used to think I was quite a big fellow.
11:50Not so much anymore.
11:52But he later said that it was the best feeling he'd ever felt.
11:56Are you sure about that, Jack?
11:57I don't know about that.
11:59As he gets older, who knows?
12:01But I don't think he's ever going to forget it.
12:05And, Jack, you earned it.
12:07And congrats.
12:08That's really a special.
12:09So that's — you thought that game were — you —
12:12it was maybe over, Coach?
12:14What do you think?
12:15That's why I felt like we were going to win.
12:16You felt like it was going to — that's why he's a good coach.
12:19He felt he was going to win.
12:21That was — that was pretty amazing.
12:23That was — and the other team was tough, right?
12:26They were a good team.
12:27Will they be good again this season?
12:28We open up the first game with them next year.
12:30Oh, you have the first game with them.
12:31Wow.
12:32That's tough.
12:33And a lot of your players are coming back, but quite a few great ones are leaving, right?
12:37To the NFL.
12:38How do you feel about — to the NFL?
12:40That's the good thing about — every one of them goes, how do you feel about the season?
12:45That's going to be exciting.
12:46It's going to be good.
12:47We're going to miss some of these guys, but we've got good young guys, and we're excited
12:49about it.
12:50Yeah.
12:51Well, I bet you're going to do great.
12:52But the Buckeyes had defied the critics, but the job just wasn't finished.
12:57This tremendous team needed one more win for the ultimate victory — the national championship
13:03game against Notre Dame.
13:05Offensive MVP, Will Howard, led the charge again, completing 14 of his first 15 — I'm
13:12telling you, the guy has an accurate arm.
13:14How many times do I have to tell you that?
13:18Quinshawn Judkins reached the end zone three times — where the hell is he?
13:30Three times, defensive MVP Cody Simon stuffed the Fighting Irish rushing attack.
13:36Where's Cody?
13:37Cody Simon.
13:38Come here.
13:39Cody Simon.
13:40Come here.
13:41Cody Simon.
13:42Come here.
13:43Cody Simon.
13:44That's a good people there, huh?
13:45Do you notice the way they're sitting in, like, a little trench?
13:51I didn't want them at the same level.
13:55Actually, it was really — but I feel very good about that, J.D., right?
13:58Yes, sir.
13:59Yeah, that's correct.
14:00Keep him down a little bit.
14:02But offensive MVP, Will Howard, led that charge.
14:06And really, these people are going places that are going to be very exciting in the future.
14:11We're going to be watching them all on Sundays and for a long time to come, I believe.
14:15Many of them.
14:16Many of the people behind us.
14:18But, Cody Simon, that was a very important deal.
14:21And Buckeye star Jeremiah Smith pulled down the unforgettable deep ball on third and
14:2611 to clinch the championship.
14:28Where's Jeremiah?
14:29Where's Jeremiah?
14:32I shouldn't say this, but the coach was giving Jeremiah some major praise backstage.
14:50I said, so what's the future?
14:51He said, well, we have a guy.
14:52He may be the best ever.
14:54That's a lot to think about, Jeremiah.
14:56Just be real good.
14:57He'll be Jerry Rice, right?
14:58Who's your favorite?
14:59Jerry Rice, man.
15:00Yeah, Jerry Rice is a great guy, too.
15:01But Jeremiah was the only freshman that was just at a level that few people have ever
15:15seen before, according to what I hear.
15:17And nobody could stop him all year long, even as a freshman.
15:20And let's not forget the resilient offensive line that helped Will achieve this record-breaking
15:26season.
15:27Get ready, fellas.
15:28Come on up here.
15:29Josh Fryer.
15:30Luke Montgomery.
15:31Carson Hinesman.
15:33Tegra Shabola.
15:34Oh.
15:35Austin Cereveld.
15:36And Donovan Jackson stepped up when you needed him most, and they protected this valuable quarterback.
15:48Thank you, Mr. President.
15:55The Speaker mindset that they could say, you know, we're going to the NFL with other people saying,
15:59you think I could make it.
16:01You're going early from what I hear.
16:03Good luck, fellas.
16:04Thank you, Josh.
16:05Good luck.
16:06Good luck, fellas.
16:07Good luck, fellas.
16:09The President, again, we're going to the NFL with other people saying, you think
16:14I could make it.
16:16Good luck, fellas.
16:18Good luck.
16:19Thank you, sir.
16:20Thank you, sir.
16:21Thank you, sir.
16:22I'm looking at him.
16:23What's he doing?
16:24I'm short compared to these guys, sir.
16:26Great job.
16:27Thank you, sir.
16:28Thank you all.
16:29That's so important.
16:34That offensive line is so important.
16:38We have — you have no idea.
16:40I've seen teams that were great, but they didn't have the offensive line, and it just doesn't
16:44work out.
16:45Right, Will?
16:46Right.
16:47You beat the Fighting Irish that day, 34-23.
16:50And for the first time in 10 years, proudly claimed the title of the great state of Ohio.
16:55The great state — I love that state.
16:57We won that state in a landslide, Governor.
17:00We won it in a landslide.
17:02I love Ohio.
17:03We'll never let you down, I swear.
17:05I promise.
17:06And if I let you down, he won't.
17:08Okay?
17:09So you have a backup.
17:10But I do love the place.
17:12And so today, I'm honored to call the Ohio State University Buckeyes national champions.
17:18You're the national champions, and you're standing right here at the White House.
17:22And it's a proud day for all of us, but it's a proud day for the scarlet and gray.
17:28Congratulations once again.
17:29And, Coach, you are a fantastic person.
17:31I got to know him just a little bit back there, and I realized almost immediately that
17:36he's really a special, special guy.
17:39And to your wife and your three beautiful children, congratulations.
17:42And I'm going to ask J.D. to say a couple of words.
17:45It's an honor to have everybody at the White House.
17:48You are a very special group from a special state, the state of Ohio.
17:53Thank you very much, everybody.
17:55Well, thank you, Mr. President.
18:03Thanks to Coach Day and the entire team for being here at the White House.
18:06I'm so proud to be part of Team Scarlet and Gray today.
18:10Congratulations to the Ohio State Buckeyes on a hell of a 2024 season.
18:14Now, I want to say just a couple of words about this team because they really helped make,
18:23sir, an incredible year even better for this very proud Ohio State alum.
18:27So two things.
18:28First of all, I made a bet with Ted Cruz over the Texas game, a bet that he is still not paid up on, Ted Cruz,
18:34if you're watching on TV.
18:36And I don't like losing any bet, but I really don't want to lose a bet to Ted Cruz.
18:40So thank you all for helping me win that bet against Ted Cruz.
18:43And the second thing, I asked the president on January the 20th.
18:46They said, sir, would you mind if I skipped that final inaugural ball to go to the Ohio State National Championship game?
18:52And the president said, no, but we'll have them at the White House.
18:55So here we are celebrating that national title.
18:58And I just want to say I'm proud of you guys.
19:00You guys were resilient.
19:01You were tough.
19:02You represented the state of Ohio well, and you represented the whole country well.
19:05And the last thing that I'll say is I don't know who let the guy over in the corner here in a Michigan hat
19:11into this celebration.
19:13But I'm about to tell the Secret Service you've got a dangerous weapon, sir.
19:18But I just want to say proud of this team, Mr. President.
19:22Thank you for hosting.
19:23And thanks to the whole state of Ohio for showing up and cheering for our Buckeyes.
19:27God bless you guys.
19:40Mr. President, Mr. Vice President, and other distinguished guests, on behalf of The Ohio State University,
19:46the Department of Athletics, thank you for inviting the National Championship Ohio State Buckeyes to the White House this afternoon.
19:53I'd like to thank Ohio State President Ted Carter, members of the Ohio delegation here with us today,
20:00Governor DeWine, Lieutenant Governor Tressel, Athletics Director Ross Bjork, and all the staff members
20:06for their work and efforts to make this trip to the White House a reality.
20:10We're honored and humbled to be here celebrating with you our ninth national championship in our great university's history.
20:16To be here surrounded by our players, staff, university leadership is a moment we'll never forget.
20:24Traveling to D.C., though, was the easy part.
20:27Earning the right to be here was the hard one.
20:30This team made history by winning the most difficult series of games in the history of college football.
20:36Defeating number seven, Tennessee. Number one, Oregon in the Rose Bowl. Number three, Texas in the Cotton Bowl.
20:44And number five, Notre Dame in the National Championship. Back to back to back to back.
20:49No team's ever done that. No team's ever done that. And through discipline and execution, this team dominated, finished the mission, and left no doubt.
21:06It all started with a group of fourth- and fifth-year seniors. They chose each other. They chose Ohio State, and they built and lived a culture of brotherhood, toughness, and love.
21:18When adversity hit, they stood tall, stuck together, showed their true character, rose to the occasion, and became champions.
21:27There's a quote I love from President Roosevelt, displayed proudly in our team room, the man in the arena.
21:33It's not the critic who counts, not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles. The credit belongs to the man who's actually in the arena,
21:40who strives valiantly, comes up short again and again, but who does actually strive to do the deeds.
21:47This quote reminds us of the true honor that belongs to those who rise to the challenge and stand in the arena, unwavered.
