15:59Grazie a tutti.
16:29a tutti.
16:59You went, you got better and better and tougher and tougher as the season went along.
17:05And after a very strong regular season, but with adversity, you held a closed door players
17:12only meeting.
17:13This extraordinary group rallied together for a single glorious mission to win four straight
17:19playoff games against the finest teams in college football.
17:24And you were able to do it, obviously.
17:28In the first playoff game, Tennessee quarterback Will Howard scorched the volunteer defense.
17:33I watched that game.
17:34I said, that guy is good.
17:38Defense for 311 yards and completed 24 of 29 passes.
17:44Known for his accuracy, strong arm.
17:47But boy, is he known for his accuracy.
17:48Where is Will?
17:49I want to see this guy.
17:54You are fantastic.
17:59Oh, he's going to be so rich.
18:01Think of that.
18:02To look like that and to play, that's a good combination.
18:03But Will went on to set an all-time college football playoff record with 1,150 yards passing.
18:08That's an incredible thing.
18:09Great to meet you.
18:10I'm going to be watching you for a long time, I think.
18:12Okay?
18:13We'll be watching him for about 15 years, maybe longer.
18:28The next game was a chance at redemption against the top-ranked Oregon Ducks, which was a tough
18:33team.
18:34It was a total team effort by Ohio State.
18:39In the first half, the Buckeyes built an insurmountable 34-point lead, thanks to the scores from veteran
18:46playmaker Tavion Henderson.
18:49Where is he?
18:50Tavion.
18:51You think I could beat him in a race?
19:06I don't know.
19:09Great going.
19:10And Ohio State, and also your receptions leader, Emeka Ibuka.
19:17Where is he?
19:19Congratulations, fellas.
19:23How important were they to your passing?
19:28Oh, they were everything.
19:29Okay.
19:30That's good.
19:31You said the right thing.
19:33Then came the team's biggest test in the semifinals, a trip to Texas for the Cotton Bowl.
19:39And Texas was pretty much rated the number one team at the beginning of the season, right?
19:44So that was a tough team.
19:45I know that.
19:46It was neck and neck late in the fourth quarter.
19:49Texas was down a score.
19:51But marching in the red zone with two minutes left on the fourth and eight with 2.29 on the
19:57clock.
19:58Hometown legend, Jack Sawyer.
20:00Boy, that's a good name.
20:01Jack Sawyer.
20:02It sounds like the name of a legend, right?
20:07A son of Columbus.
20:09We won Columbus by a lot of points.
20:11I like it, though.
20:13Gave the world an all-time great Ohio State football moment.
20:17You, most of you know what I'm talking about.
20:19in one amazing play, Jack exploded off the line, strip sacked the quarterback, which is not easy
20:25to do, scooped the fumble recovery, scored an 83-yard touchdown return, and punched Ohio
20:33State's ticket to the championship game.
20:35That's a hell of a thing.
20:36You mean you took the ball out of the quarterback's hand?
20:39How?
20:40I don't want to say this.
20:41I don't want to make...
20:42How do you think that other team feels?
20:43Not too good.
20:44That's one of those disasters for another team, right?
20:47Oh, that quarterback doesn't feel good.
20:49Where is he?
20:50I want to see this guy.
20:51Nice to meet you.
20:52Nice to meet you.
20:53Nice to meet you.
20:54Nice to meet you.
20:55Nice to meet you.
20:56Nice to meet you.
20:57Nice to meet you.
20:58Nice to meet you.
20:59Nice to meet you.
21:00Nice to meet you.
21:01Nice to meet you.
21:02Nice to meet you.
21:03Nice to meet you.
21:04Phenomenal.
21:05Are you that fast that you can get down?
21:06I have some great blockers leading the way.
21:07Probably got caught probably.
21:08That's unbelievable, actually.
21:10Size of these guys.
21:12I used to think I was quite a big fellow, not so much anymore.
21:15But he later said that it was the best feeling he'd ever felt.
21:19Are you sure about that, Jack?
21:20I don't know about that.
21:22As he gets older, who knows?
21:24But I don't think he's ever going to forget it.
21:28And, Jack, you earned it.
21:30And congrats.
21:31That's really a special.
21:32So that's — you thought that game were — it was maybe over, Coach?
21:37What do you think?
21:38That's why I felt like we were going to win.
21:40You felt like it was going to — that's why he's a good coach.
21:43He felt he was going to win.
21:44That was — that was pretty amazing.
21:46That was — and the other team was tough.
21:48And the other team was tough, right?
21:49They were a good team.
21:50Will they be good again this season?
21:51We open up the first game with them next year.
21:53Oh, you have the first game with them.
21:54Wow.
21:55That's tough.
21:56And a lot of your players are coming back, but quite a few great ones are leaving, right?
22:00To the NFL.
22:01How do you feel about — to the NFL?
22:03That's the good thing about — every one of them goes — how do you feel about the season?
22:08It's going to be exciting.
22:09It's going to be good.
22:10We're going to miss some of these guys, but we've got good young guys, and we're excited about it.
22:13I bet you're going to do great.
22:15But the Buckeyes had defied the critics, but the job just wasn't finished.
22:20This tremendous team needed one more win for the ultimate victory — the national championship
22:26game against Notre Dame.
22:28Offensive MVP Will Howard led the charge again, completing 14 of his first 15 — I'm telling
22:35you, the guy has an accurate arm.
22:36How many times do I have to tell you that?
22:41Quinchon Judkins reached the end zone three times — where the hell is he?
22:49Three times, defensive MVP Cody Simons stuffed the Fighting Irish rushing attack.
23:00Where's Cody?
23:02Do you notice the way they're sitting in, like, a little trench?
23:15I didn't want them at the same level.
23:17Actually, it was really — but I feel very good about that, J.D.
23:21Right?
23:22Keep them down a little bit.
23:25But offensive MVP Will Howard led that charge.
23:29And, really, these people are going places that are going to be very exciting in the future.
23:34We're going to be watching them all on Sundays and for a long time to come, I believe.
23:39Many of them — many of the people behind us.
23:41But, Cody Simon, that was a very important deal.
23:44And Buckeyes star Jeremiah Smith pulled down the unforgettable deep ball on third and
23:4911 to clinch the championship.
23:51Where's Jeremiah?
23:52I shouldn't say this, but the coach was giving Jeremiah some major praise backstage.
24:13I said, so what's the future?
24:14He said, well, we have a guy.
24:15He may be the best ever.
24:18That's a lot to think about, Jeremiah.
24:20Just be real good.
24:21He'll be Jerry Rice, right?
24:24Who's your favorite?
24:25Jerry Rice.
24:26Jerry Rice, man.
24:27Jerry Rice is a great guy, too.
24:29But Jeremiah was the only freshman that was just at a level that few people have ever seen before,
24:38according to what I hear.
24:40And nobody could stop him all year long, even as a freshman.
24:43And let's not forget the resilient offensive line that helped Will achieve this record-breaking
24:49season.
24:50Get ready, fellas.
24:51Come on up here.
24:52Josh Fryer.
24:53Luke Montgomery.
24:54Carson Hinesman.
24:56Tegra Shabola.
24:59Oh.
25:00Austin Cereveld.
25:05And Donovan Jackson stepped up when you needed him most, and they protected this valuable
25:11quarterback.
25:12It's a great thing, Mr. President.
25:18Thanks, sir.
25:19Thanks, Mr. President.
25:20Thanks, sir.
25:21You did a great job, man.
25:22Thank you for that man.
25:23Oh wow.
25:24It's nice when they could say, yeah, we're going to the NFL with other people saying,
25:25Grazie a tutti.
25:55That offensive line is so important.
26:02We have, you have no idea.
26:03I've seen teams that were great,
26:05but they didn't have the offensive line,
26:07and it just doesn't work out.
26:08Right, Will?
26:09You beat the Fighting Irish that day, 34-23,
26:13and for the first time in 10 years,
26:15proudly claimed the title of the great state of Ohio,
26:19the great state.
26:20I love that state.
26:21We won that state in a landslide, Governor.
26:23We won it in a landslide.
26:26I love Ohio.
26:27We'll never let you down, I swear, I promise.
26:30And if I let you down, he won't, okay?
26:33So you have a backup.
26:34But I do love the place.
26:36And so today, I'm honored to call
26:38the Ohio State University Buckeyes national champions.
26:42You're the national champions,
26:43and you're standing right here at the White House.
26:45And it's a proud day for all of us,
26:48but it's a proud day for the scarlet and gray.
26:52Congratulations once again.
26:53And, Coach, you are a fantastic person.
26:56I got to know him just a little bit back there,
26:58and I realized almost immediately
26:59that he's really a special, special guy.
27:03And to your wife and your three beautiful children,
27:05congratulations.
27:06And I'm going to ask J.D. to say a couple of words.
27:09It's an honor to have everybody at the White House.
27:12You are a very special group
27:13from a special state, the state of Ohio.
27:17Thank you very much, everybody.
27:18Thank you.
27:23Well, thank you, Mr. President.
27:27Thanks to Coach Day and the entire team
27:28for being here at the White House.
27:30I'm so proud to be part of Team Scarlet and Gray today.
27:34Congratulations to the Ohio State Buckeyes
27:36on a hell of a 2024 season.
27:42Now, I want to say just a couple of words about this team
27:45because they really helped make, sir,
27:47an incredible year even better
27:48for this very proud Ohio State alum.
27:51So two things.
27:52First of all, I made a bet with Ted Cruz over the Texas game,
27:56a bet that he is still not paid up on, Ted Cruz.
27:58If you're watching on TV and I don't like losing any bet,
28:02but I really don't want to lose a bet to Ted Cruz.
28:04So thank you all for helping me win that bet
28:06against Ted Cruz.
28:07And the second thing I asked the president
28:09on January the 20th, he said,
28:10sir, would you mind if I skipped
28:12that final inaugural ball
28:13to go to the Ohio State National Championship game?
28:16And the president said,
28:17no, but we'll have him at the White House.
28:18So here we are celebrating that national title.
28:21And I just want to say I'm proud of you guys.
28:23You guys were resilient.
28:25You were tough.
28:26You represented the state of Ohio well
28:27and you represented the whole country well.
28:29And the last thing that I'll say is
28:31I don't know who let the guy over in the corner here
28:34in a Michigan hat into this celebration,
28:37but I'm about to tell the Secret Service
28:40you've got a dangerous weapon, sir.
28:42But I just want to say proud of this team,
28:45Mr. President, thank you for hosting
28:46and thanks to the whole state of Ohio
28:49for showing up and cheering for our Buckeyes.
28:51God bless you guys.
29:04Mr. President, Mr. Vice President,
29:06and other distinguished guests,
29:08on behalf of The Ohio State University,
29:10the Department of Athletics,
29:12thank you for inviting the National Championship
29:14Ohio State Buckeyes to the White House this afternoon.
29:17I'd like to thank Ohio State President Ted Carter,
29:21members of the Ohio Delegation here with us today,
29:24Governor DeWine, Lieutenant Governor Trestle,
29:27Athletics Director Ross Bjork,
29:28and all the staff members for their work
29:30and efforts to make this trip to the White House a reality.
29:33We're honored and humbled to be here
29:35celebrating with you our ninth National Championship
29:38in our great university's history.
29:40To be here surrounded by our players,
29:44staff, university leadership,
29:47is a moment we'll never forget.
29:49Traveling to D.C., though, was the easy part.
29:52Earning the right to be here was the hard one.
29:55This team made history
29:56by winning the most difficult series of games
29:59in the history of college football.
30:01Defeating number seven, Tennessee.
30:03Number one, Oregon in the Rose Bowl.
30:06Number three, Texas in the Cotton Bowl.
30:07and number five, Notre Dame in the National Championship.
30:10Back to back to back to back.
30:13No team's ever done that.
30:20No team's ever done that.
30:22And through discipline and execution,
30:25this team dominated, finished the mission,
30:28and left no doubt.
30:30It all started with a group of fourth- and fifth-year seniors.
30:33They chose each other.
30:34They chose Ohio State,
30:37and they built and lived a culture of brotherhood,
30:40toughness, and love.
30:42When adversity hit, they stood tall,
30:44stuck together,
30:46showed their true character,
30:48rose to the occasion,
30:49and became champions.
30:51There's a quote I love from President Roosevelt,
30:54displayed proudly in our team room,
30:56the man in the arena.
30:57It's not the critic who counts,
30:58not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles.
31:01The credit belongs to the man who's actually in the arena,
31:04who strives valiantly,
31:06comes up short again and again,
31:08but who does actually strive to do the deeds.
31:11This quote reminds us of the true honor
31:13that belongs to those who rise to the challenge
31:15and stand in the arena unwavered.
31:18It took every challenge,
31:20and we responded,
31:22with heart,
31:23with grit,
31:23and with determination.
31:25That's why this moment means so much to us.
31:28Our families,
31:30thank you so much for your love
31:31and your support along the way.
31:32To our coaches,
31:33thank you for your hard work
31:34and for your leadership.
31:36And to our players,
31:37thank you for everything.
31:39Your story will forever be told.
31:41And Mr. President,
31:42thank you again for this incredible honor.
31:44God bless America,
31:45and go Bucs.
31:46Thank you.
