00:00Nightly greetings, one and all. Denise Osorio here, homegrown and glad to bring you PTV News Now.
00:08Tops on our stories for this evening.
00:11The Holy Week from Palm Sunday to Maundy Thursday is the hype of movement or interim migration in and out of the megacity.
00:19Millions hit the road, sail away, or take to the skies to escape the fast, frenetic, and furious pace of the rat race of the megacity
00:28to relax and take stock on the deeper, more philosophical, and spiritual issues of one's being.
00:35And when people travel en masse, criminal minds and bad actors follow in their trail or await for them where they converge
00:41to depart in airports, bus terminals, or on the flip side, where they are weakest, in their homes where everyone is gone
00:49and nobody on guard during the Lenten break.
00:51Knowing the gravity and extent of a traveler's dilemma on the road and away from their home,
00:58PNP chief Romel Marbil gathered his men in a command conference to plot their moves to thwart theft in airports,
01:05piers, bus terminals, and protect the homes of travelers from cat burglars and home invaders while away.
01:11To this end, he instructed a more enhanced and proactive coordination with barangay officers,
01:18neighborhood-watched security or tanod people, and private security personnel to datter designs of thieves and home invaders.
01:26He also reminded them to observe transparency at all times by wearing body cameras
01:31and urged them to shy away from politicians and or artisan political talk and activity.
01:37Stories of gallantry, compassion, and endurance in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq
01:46are forever enshrined in solid media in the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Virginia.
01:53VOA is not sure as more as narrated by Bisham Handard and Roshan Norzai.
01:59It was not uncommon for U.S. Marines to meet with Afghan community leaders during the two-decade war in Afghanistan
02:07that ended in August of 2021.
02:10Two new gallery spaces at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Virginia
02:14highlight American military personnel who served both in Afghanistan and Iraq.
02:20Kyle Gentry is the museum's director.
02:22We strive here to not just have things in a building, but we have artifacts that tell a story.
02:30So everything in here tells part of that story.
02:32So it's not meant to be kind of a rote history of 20 years,
02:36but tell inspiring stories of the different men and women that served there.
02:41This gallery spends 20 years of U.S. Marine involvement in Afghanistan,
02:45from the first ground combat in November 2001 to this photo of Abbey Gate at Kabul Airport in August 2021,
02:53marking the end of America's presence in Afghanistan.
02:57Chief Curator Owen Connor says one of the biggest challenges was connecting with Marines
03:02who still had fresh memories and artifacts to exhibit in the museum.
03:06It was a challenge. It was very difficult at first.
03:09A lot of Marines were very reluctant to have their story featured
03:12because they didn't want to draw attention to themselves unduly or unnecessarily.
03:18They didn't want to be seen as the hero in a museum case.
03:21The galleries feature thousands of artifacts, including fallen Marines' uniforms and personal items
03:27from those who served in operations from the end of the Vietnam War through Iraq and Afghanistan.
03:33Officials say they worked closely with U.S. service members to tell their stories,
03:37which are having an impact on museum visitors like Susan Sherman.
03:41What was very impressive was the equipment that the Marines were able to use to save lives,
03:49like the all-terrain vehicle over here.
03:51Officials say it is important not only to share the stories of those who served in Afghanistan,
03:56but also to educate people about their service.
03:59It's also very important because in the United States, our military is all volunteer,
04:05and so the percentage of those who serve in the military is very small.
04:10So part of what we try to do is tell the Marine Corps story,
04:13but bridge that civil-military gap in society.
04:17Gentry says the exhibition aims to inspire the next generation of men and women to join the Marine Corps.
04:23For Noshava Ashna in Triangle, Virginia, Bishan Hamdar, VOA News.
