Newcastle United moved up to fourth in the Premier League table with a 4-1 win over Manchester United at St James' Park.
Transcript
00:00There might not be the Manchester United of the old, but that was still a very satisfying win for Newcastle United at St. James' Park on Sunday afternoon.
00:09A 4-1 victory, a comfortable one at that, particularly in the second half.
00:15First half, Sandro Tenalli's volley put Newcastle in front.
00:19Alejandro Garnaccio then equalises against the run of play, but Newcastle really did put the visitors to the sword in the second half.
00:27A brace from Harvey Barnes and a goal from Bruno Gimreich made it a comfortable afternoon in a dominant second half.
00:35To say the least, Manchester United are in a really bad place at this moment.
00:42The result yesterday ensured that they will record their worst ever points total in the Premier League.
00:49Iran, I suspect, will probably finish in the bottom half of the table.
00:53Of course, their priorities weren't there at St. James' Park yesterday at Old Trafford.
00:58On Thursday, when they faced Lyon in the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie,
01:03of course, they drew 2-2 in Lyon a couple of days before, or a few years before, coming to St. James' Park.
01:09So, Ruben Amaran made five changes to his start in 11 yesterday, ahead of Thursday.
01:15So, you can see their priorities are there, but I think take nothing away from Newcastle.
01:19It doesn't make it any less satisfying because Newcastle have had their fair hammerings from Manchester United over the years.
01:26But it's now Newcastle's turn, and the tables have turned in recent seasons, if you want to take away that Carabao Cup final,
01:33which is the only time, really, that Manchester United have got a result against Newcastle of recent time.
01:39Of course, they beat them in Old Trafford last season, but it used to be, when you played Manchester United,
01:43it was sort of a guaranteed defeat, if you like, but not anymore.
01:46Newcastle are unbeaten against the Red Devils.
01:49It changed James' Park in five years.
01:52Of course, won an Old Trafford earlier in the season, so that's the first league double over Manchester United in 95 years.
01:59So, yeah, as much as Manchester United aren't the team that they used to be,
02:03it's still satisfying for Newcastle to finally get one over on them.
02:07But, yeah, the performances are all, of course.
02:10Newcastle, where without their manager, Eddie Howe, who was admitted to hospital on Friday night,
02:16felt ill for a number of days in the middle of the Friday,
02:20when Jason Tindall took his press conference, Jason Tindall told the media that he expected Eddie Howe to be back on the touchdown
02:25for the game against Manchester United.
02:28But, unfortunately, Eddie Howe's condition worsened Friday evening.
02:31He's admitted to hospital and still undergoing tests.
02:35He still is on the mend, as we understand, when he's going to be back at St. James' Park on the touchdown.
02:41We don't quite know yet, but Jason Tindall did see that Eddie Howe managed to watch the game yesterday against Manchester United.
02:49It sent Jason Tindall and his coaches a congratulatory message to Crystal Palace up on Wednesday.
02:56It remains to be seen if Eddie Howe will be back on the touchdown.
02:59I suspect with a quick turnaround, I would assume not.
03:04But, of course, the quicker they get Eddie Howe back on the touchline, the better,
03:08because he is a massive miss.
03:10And you can see the way the players spoke on Rafa, just how much he has loved he had, of course,
03:15by the players and supporters as well.
03:17So, yeah, well wishes to go out to Eddie Howe, hopefully see him back soon.
03:23But I think it's credit to Eddie Howe and the processes he put in place that, even though he wasn't there,
03:29Newcastle still played like an Eddie Howe team, that real high intensity in the faces,
03:34particularly, again, in that second half against Manchester United, where they started forcing Manchester United in errors.
03:38So, I think it's credit to Eddie Howe and his coach as well that, even though the manager wasn't there,
03:43he was able to put in a performance that took them up to fourth in the Premier League table.
03:48That's now five wins in a row in all competitions.
03:50So, Newcastle have hit form at the right time.
03:54You didn't know how things were going to go after that Carabao Cup final.
03:58Would they feel like season was over?
03:59You know, they'd accomplished everything.
04:01They'd won the club's first domestic trophy in 70 years.
04:04How would they respond when coming back to the Premier League?
04:06And they've responded in great fashion, as I say, won every game since against Brentford, Leicester,
04:11and now Manchester United.
04:12So, they've put themselves in a real strong position of qualifying for the Champions League.
04:16Of course, it'll be top five this season that gets Champions League, Newcastle, or fourth.
04:21If they beat Crystal Palace on Wednesday, their game in hand, they'll move up to third in the Premier League ahead of Nottingham Forest,
04:26which I felt like Nottingham Forest were uncatchable a few months ago.
04:31A couple of months ago, I mean, Nottingham Forest had a really, really good season.
04:35But they've fallen of late a little bit since reaching that FA Cup semi-final.
04:40So, perhaps, when you're talking about teams in and around Newcastle, perhaps priorities are elsewhere.
04:45While it's focused are elsewhere, I'm talking about Nottingham Forest.
04:48Of course, Aston Villa have got an FA Cup semi-final coming up.
04:51They've got, before Newcastle go to Aston Villa on Saturday, they've got a second leg Champions League quarterfinal
04:57against Paris Saint-Germain at Villa Park.
04:59So, it feels like Newcastle are really focused now on getting the job done.
05:04And that's, again, that's sort of credit to how the belief anyhow is instilled and the mentality anyhow is instilled
05:10that even though they've won the club's first trophy for 56 years, the first domestic in 70 years,
05:16that they've still got that drive to make this a really, really special season
05:20because qualifying for the Champions League and winning the Carabao Cup,
05:25I mean, I can't think of many better seasons, certainly not in recent memory,
05:29and going back further as well, I can't think of many, obviously, probably winning an elite title.
05:34But, yeah, there's a real, I've sent a real driving determination for Newcastle
05:38to go and get those Champions League qualification spots and they've put themselves in the driving seat.
05:43As I say, if they can get a result against Crystal Palace on Wednesday, six games left,
05:49third in the Premier League, and, you know, you'd suspect that they're nearly there.
05:54But, as I say, a lot can happen.
05:56A lot can happen.
05:57So, but, yeah, Newcastle have put themselves in a really, really strong position.
06:01And one player I want to focus on is Sandro Tenali because as much as Harvey Barnes
06:06rightly grabbed the headlines yesterday, I thought that was his best performance in a Newcastle shirt.
06:12Anthony Gordon is obviously back from suspension slash injury now
06:17and will be breathing down Harvey Barnes' neck, but he put in a performance yesterday
06:21where he simply can't drop Harvey Barnes.
06:24I know they've got Newcastle, obviously, got two games to play, just days apart,
06:29obviously, Crystal Palace and then Aston Villa.
06:32But Harvey Barnes, for me, is undroppable.
06:35He's made that sort of left-hand wing position his own, which he's struggled to do initially
06:42since coming from Leicester City.
06:45He couldn't quite get a run of games, but Gordon's suspension slash injury is allowed him to do that
06:49and full credit to the player because he's grasped his opportunity in his two goals yesterday.
06:53He were, as I say, very, very different goals, the first one.
06:57I think you've got to give him credit for anticipating the ball going back into the six-yard box
07:01and, OK, he tapped and then he met, but to be there, I think, was a really, really clever play.
07:06And then his second goal as well, sort of that incisive driving run forward
07:10and a great finish in the top right corner.
07:13I think, yeah, I think his performance was excellent yesterday
07:16and, as I say, probably his best.
07:18But, yeah, going back on to Sandro Tenor, he just, what a player.
07:23I mean, 12 months ago, even when he came back into the team after his 10-month ban,
07:31I didn't quite see how Sandro Tenor was working in the system.
07:35They're only trying as a number eight and he wasn't quite impacting games.
07:40But then he moved into the number six role and he's been a revelation.
07:44I think he's become Newcastle's most integral player.
07:50I don't think Newcastle now can live without Sandro Tenor.
07:53All the work that he does, it's not just the clever flicks, the finishes, the passes.
07:58It's the engine he's got as well.
08:00They're putting out fires.
08:01I mean, at the end of the game yesterday, he's doing sprints, I think.
08:05It's incredible.
08:06It's a workhorse, a real engine.
08:08I've not seen an engine on a player like him.
08:10He just never seems to tire.
08:12But he's also got that just classy edge as well, a real technician.
08:15I mean, that volley score yesterday, just an unbelievable technique.
08:18And he had a shot moments after as well where the ball sort of just drifted wide of the post.
08:23He's got a hell of a shot on him.
08:24He's a lovely technician.
08:25He can pass a ball.
08:26He can strike a ball.
08:28As I say, he can get out of the pitch easily.
08:30He has just turned into an absolutely excellent player for Newcastle.
08:34And, yeah, just a top level.
08:36Probably established himself in that sort of bracket Newcastle squad where he certainly can't sell them.
08:42Alexander Isaac is one.
08:45Bruno Gamerais, I'd say, was another.
08:46And then Sandro Tenorvi in there as well.
08:49Just, yeah, just absolutely outstanding.
08:51And so, Newcastle are in a good moment at this moment in time.
08:56Hopefully it can continue.
08:57As I say, everyone's riding my heart of the Manchester United win.
09:00But Crystal Palace is to come next.
09:03If they can get a result against Crystal Palace, then, yeah, Newcastle.
09:07Momentum is already with Newcastle.
09:08But if they can get a result against Crystal Palace and Champions League football.
09:12Or, I wouldn't say it was a dream as such because Newcastle had been there.
09:15But it could slowly start to become a reality again.
09:20And that would be an unbelievable season.
09:23So, yeah, let's see what happens.
09:25See you on Wednesday when Newcastle do face Crystal Palace.
09:28But before then, we'll be at, I'm presuming, Jason Tindall's press conference.
09:34Head of the Crystal Palace game.
09:36So, stay tuned to Newcastle World for that.
09:39And, yeah, we'll see you on the next video.
