00:00Hello and welcome, I'm Geeta Mohan and you're watching World Today.
00:17This is the weekend edition, so we'll take you through all the top stories of the week,
00:22beginning with a diplomatic victory for India.
00:24India has successfully been able to extradite one of the masterminds of 2611 Mumbai terror
00:30attacks, Tahavur Hussain Rana, a Pakistani-Canadian.
00:34Rana was linked to the 2008 Mumbai attacks that claimed nearly 170 lives.
00:39He was arrested by the NIA upon arrival following his extradition from the United States of America.
00:45Rana was presented before a special NIA judge.
00:49The court has granted 18 days of NIA custody.
00:54Well, the Tahavur Hussain Rana decision did not happen during Trump administration,
00:58but during Biden administration.
01:00I spoke with former U.S. envoy to India, Ambassador Eric Garcetti,
01:04and in this exclusive conversation, he speaks about how the two countries together cooperated
01:10in ensuring Tahavur Hussain Rana comes to India and faces the law.
01:15This is an achievement for families who lost loved ones.
01:18This is an achievement against terrorism, which the United States and India,
01:22generation after generation, administration after administration, stand for together.
01:27And as someone who worked very hard on this extradition, this was not about politics.
01:31This was about justice.
01:32And today, justice has been served.
01:35Reminds me of, you know,
01:36justice, you know, requires patience.
01:43It requires persistence.
01:44But today, justice has been served.
01:47And for the victims of 2611 and a message to anybody who would terrorize innocent people,
01:53be they Indian or from anywhere,
01:55that the world and that democracies like ours stand against that terror,
01:59I think has been heard loud and clear.
02:01Our FBI investigated and successfully was able to put together much of the evidence
02:06of crimes committed by Rana and literally hundreds and hundreds of hours
02:11of our law enforcement officials and then our lawyers on both sides of the Indo-Pacific,
02:17working together with two different systems so that the Indian prosecutors
02:21and Indian legal system could understand our system and the appeals that Rana was entitled to.
02:27Vice versa, us hearing from India what the promises were of an extradition,
02:32those, I think, reflect just how far we've come and how closely aligned we are.
02:38If, you know, we had a picture of everyone who worked on this,
02:41not only were there politicians at the top,
02:44but really dedicated law enforcement officials, police officers, investigators,
02:48prosecutors, judges who were a part of making sure that this is airtight
02:52because nobody wanted to see somebody escape from justice that for too long had not served justice.
02:58We were clear about that.
03:00Our Indian friends were clear about what they needed.
03:03And as two great friends, India and the United States together, working together,
03:07showed that terrorists cannot run, they cannot hide,
03:10they will face justice as long as they are in either of our countries
03:14if they ever come after one of our citizens.
03:16To catch the full interview with Ambassador Eric Garcetti,
03:21log on to India Today Global YouTube channel,
03:23and you'll be able to listen into exactly how the two countries ensured Rana comes to India.
03:30With that shifting focus, China now has hit back at the U.S.
03:34with a 125% tariff following a tit-for-tat trade war
03:38after Washington levied Beijing with a 145% tariff.
03:43Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping, in his first remarks,
03:47has said his country is not afraid.
03:52There seems to be no end to the U.S.-China trade war.
03:56After U.S. levied 145% tariff on China,
04:00Beijing, in a retaliatory measure, raised import taxes on U.S. goods to 125%.
04:06Chinese President Xi Jinping,
04:09who hosted Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in Beijing,
04:14reiterated his stance to oppose unilateral bullying.
04:19Taking necessary countermeasures to oppose the U.S. bullying moves
04:23is not only aimed at protecting our own sovereignty,
04:26security and development interests,
04:28but also at safeguarding international fairness and justice,
04:31maintaining the multilateral trading system,
04:33and upholding the common interests of the international community.
04:36As Trump gives 90-day pause on tariffs to other countries,
04:42while China bears the brunt of a continuous rise in tariff charges,
04:46Xi also said that his country is not afraid.
04:52Tariff wars and trade wars have no winners.
04:55China doesn't want to fight them,
04:56but does not fear them when they come our way.
04:59We will not sit idly by
05:00and let the Chinese people be deprived
05:03of their legitimate rights and interests,
05:05nor will we allow the international trade rules
05:07and multilateral trading system to be undermined.
05:10If the U.S. insists on fighting a tariff war or a trade war,
05:14China will fight to the end.
05:19Trump's tactics of threatening China with higher tariffs
05:22is a way to force Beijing to enter into negotiations.
05:26During his first term,
05:28both the countries had sealed a trade agreement,
05:30which was never fully implemented then.
05:33What happens with China?
05:35We would love to be able to work a deal.
05:40They've really taken advantage of our country
05:42for a long period of time.
05:44They've ripped us off beyond anybody, nobody.
05:48How people stood for it,
05:49sitting in my position,
05:51is not even believable.
05:54But in spite of levying such high tariffs on China,
05:57Trump insists that the Chinese president
06:00is a true friend of his.
06:02We're resetting the table
06:04and I'm sure that we'll be able to get along very well.
06:09I have great respect for President Xi.
06:11He's been, in a true sense,
06:13he's been a friend of mine for a long period of time
06:15and I think that we'll end up working out something
06:19that's very good for both countries.
06:22I look forward to it.
06:22The trade war between the world's two economic superpowers
06:26is being seen to have catastrophic consequences
06:30and has stirred the fear of global recession.
06:33If the additional reciprocity of tariffs continue,
06:37American consumers particularly
06:39and global consumers generally
06:41will have painful days ahead,
06:43worsening the quality of lives of millions.
06:46As new tariff charges kick in
06:53from both China and the United States of America,
06:56spokesperson from the Chinese Ministry of Commerce
06:59has said that the country has filed
07:02a supplementary lawsuit
07:03against the United States of America
07:05with the World Trade Organization's
07:08dispute settlement mechanism
07:09following the latest U.S. tariff hikes.
07:12After several days of chaos
07:14in the global financial markets,
07:16Trump had announced that he was putting
07:18a 90-day pause on the higher tariff rates
07:21to the European Union
07:22and all other countries except China,
07:25where the reciprocal tariff rate
07:27was raised to 125%,
07:30with the total levy on Chinese goods surging
07:32to a staggering 145%.
07:36Meanwhile, European Union and China
07:38have agreed to look into setting
07:41minimum prices of Chinese-made electric vehicles
07:44instead of tariffs imposed by the EU last year.
07:49With a volatile market resulting
07:50from Trump's tariff announcements
07:52and slapping high-tariff charges
07:54on U.S. allies,
07:55China has now started engaging
07:57with the European Union
07:58and other countries
08:00to counter U.S. trade war tactics.
08:02Spain has also welcomed Chinese enterprises
08:05to invest and do business in Spain
08:07and support the EU and China
08:09to resolve differences
08:11through dialogue and consultation
08:12and further develop EU-China relations.
08:17China said on Thursday
08:18it would immediately restrict imports
08:20of Hollywood films
08:21in retaliation for President Donald Trump's
08:24escalation of U.S. tariffs
08:26on imported Chinese goods,
08:27though analysts say
08:28the impact is likely to be minimal.
08:31After three decades
08:32during which China annually imported
08:3410 Hollywood movies,
08:36its National Film Administration said
08:39Trump's increase of tariffs
08:40on Chinese imports
08:41would further sourd domestic demand
08:43for U.S. cinema in China
08:45after years of decline.
08:47Hollywood studios once looked to China
08:50and its giant film markets
08:51to help boost box office performance
08:54of movies.
08:55The restrictions arrived
08:56before the start of the summer box office,
08:58with such major releases
09:00as Mission Impossible,
09:02The Final Reckoning,
09:03which may mark Tom Cruise's
09:05last appearance
09:06in the long-running franchise,
09:09a new Superman movie
09:10from Guardians of the Galaxy
09:12filmmaker James Gunn,
09:14and Marvel's new take
09:15on the fantastic fall.
09:18U.S. military announced
09:20that it had removed
09:20Colonel Susanna Myers,
09:22commander of its pitufic base
09:24in Greenland,
09:25stating it would not tolerate
09:27any pushback against
09:29President Donald Trump's agenda.
09:31Now, what happened?
09:32According to the independent
09:33news organization Military.com,
09:36Myers sent an email
09:37to base personnel
09:38on the 31st of March,
09:40distancing herself
09:42from U.S. Vice President
09:44J.D. Vance's visit
09:45to Greenland.
09:46Vance traveled
09:47to the pitufic military base
09:49with a U.S. delegation
09:51on the 28th of March,
09:52amid repeated threats
09:53from Trump to seize Greenland.
09:56During the visit,
09:57Vance criticized
09:58Denmark's management
09:59of Greenland,
10:00suggesting that the territory
10:01would be safer
10:02under U.S. protection
10:03due to perceived threats
10:05from China and Russia.
10:07Office for a few minutes
10:08so I can get my bearings
10:09and I'm going to embarrass it.
10:12Is everything not well
10:13between U.S. President
10:14Donald Trump
10:15and billionaire friend,
10:17ally Elon Musk?
10:19Well, the latest Trump reaction
10:20on Musk suggests
10:22that there is definitely
10:23something not okay
10:25between the two.
10:26Amid speculation
10:27over Elon Musk's
10:28possible exit
10:29from the Trump administration,
10:31President Donald Trump
10:32made it clear
10:33that he doesn't rely
10:34on Musk
10:35despite the latter's
10:37prominent role
10:38and financial backing
10:39during the election.
10:41In a shocking statement,
10:42U.S. President said
10:43that he doesn't care
10:44about Tesla CEO
10:45Elon Musk
10:46and added
10:47he doesn't need him
10:48for anything.
10:49The statement came
10:50following a cabinet meeting
10:52when reporters asked
10:53the U.S. President
10:54about Musk
10:54and he said
10:56and I quote
10:56I don't care
10:57I don't need Elon
10:58for anything other than
10:59I happen to like him
11:01said the U.S. President.
11:03Soon after,
11:04Trump made the comment
11:05on Musk's video
11:06of him
11:07going viral
11:08on social media
11:09with netizens
11:10asking if the duo
11:11is heading towards
11:13different ways.
11:14In one of the video
11:15which is now viral
11:16on social media,
11:17Trump said
11:18he doesn't even need
11:19his Tesla anymore
11:20despite paying
11:21a lot of money
11:22for it.
11:23Musk,
11:23who was granted
11:24broad access
11:25to government operations
11:26through his role
11:27in tackling waste
11:28and fraud,
11:29has kept a lower profile
11:31since Republicans
11:32lost last week's
11:33Wisconsin Supreme Court race.
11:35His reduced visibility
11:37has raised questions
11:38about his future
11:39involvement
11:39in the administration,
11:41particularly
11:41as he has been seen
11:43less frequently
11:44at the White House.
11:47And I don't care.
11:48I don't need
11:49Elon for anything
11:50other than
11:50I happen to like him.
11:51But I'm telling you,
11:52this guy,
11:53this guy did
11:54a fantastic job.
11:56I don't need his car.
11:57I actually bought one
11:58because,
11:59and they said,
11:59oh,
12:00did you get a bargain?
12:00No.
12:01I said,
12:01give me the top price.
12:02I paid a lot of money
12:03for that car.
12:04But honestly,
12:05he makes,
12:06he makes a great car.
12:07You know what I do with it?
12:08I let the people
12:09in the office
12:10drive around in it.
12:13Margo,
12:14Natalie,
12:15they're all,
12:16Chamberlain,
12:17and they're all
12:17driving around
12:18in the most beautiful car.
12:20It's gorgeous.
12:22But I did that
12:23as a sign of,
12:23just a show of support.
12:25Numerous people
12:26have done that.
12:28No week can end
12:30without the viral posts
12:33and Trump going viral.
12:35Here is our segment,
12:37Viral Potus,
12:38on what did Trump say,
12:40how did he make news,
12:41and how did he go viral
12:42this entire week.
12:43Take a look.
12:44In a bizarre comment,
12:49US President Donald Trump
12:51claimed world leaders
12:52were dying
12:53to make a deal
12:54with him
12:54amid turmoil
12:55regarding sweeping
12:56tariff measures
12:57that he had announced
12:58earlier this month.
13:00According to Trump,
13:01the world leaders
13:02in his contact
13:03would do anything
13:03to secure a pact
13:05on tariffs.
13:06But what had raised
13:07eyebrows
13:07was his comment
13:09that stated,
13:10I'm telling you,
13:11these countries
13:11are calling us up
13:12kissing my a**.
13:14Our country,
13:14and don't let
13:15some of these politicians
13:16go around saying,
13:17you know,
13:18because I'm telling you,
13:19these countries
13:20are calling us up
13:21kissing my a**.
13:26Whatever President
13:27Donald Trump does
13:28seems to be becoming
13:29the talk of the internet.
13:31In this viral moment,
13:32during a meeting
13:33when Israeli Prime Minister
13:35Benjamin Netanyahu
13:36tried to sit down,
13:38Trump made a quick
13:39viral gesture
13:40to assist him.
13:41The moment instantly
13:43captured everybody's
13:44attention,
13:45showcasing Trump's
13:46thoughtful and
13:47spontaneous response.
13:51Donald Trump has
13:53become the new
13:53pookie face
13:54for the internet.
13:55Donald Trump's
13:56armed wrestling moment
13:57during his meet
13:58with coal workers
13:59has now become
14:00the talk of the
14:01social media.
14:05Donald Trump's
14:06rants about
14:07low eater pressure
14:08is going viral
14:09on social media.
14:10Trump signed an order
14:12to roll back
14:13conservation regulations
14:15enacted by the
14:16Biden administration
14:17to limit pressure
14:18for shower heads
14:19and other water
14:20appliances,
14:21calling the rules
14:22ridiculous.
14:24But what went viral
14:25was how he poked
14:26former President
14:27Joe Biden,
14:28saying nobody wants
14:29a low flow shower head.
14:31He told officials
14:32and the journalists
14:33present that he likes
14:34to take a nice shower
14:36to take care of
14:37my beautiful hair.
14:38In my case,
14:39I like to take a nice
14:40shower to take care
14:42of my beautiful hair.
14:44I have to stand
14:45in the shower
14:45for 15 minutes
14:46until it gets wet.
14:48It comes out
14:48drip, drip, drip.
14:49It's ridiculous.
14:54Amid the ongoing
14:55US-China trade war,
14:56AI-generated videos
14:58of Americans
14:58working in dingy factories
15:00have flooded
15:01social media.
15:03But the one
15:04that caught
15:04netizens' attention
15:05was the video
15:06that had Trump
15:07and his patriot friend
15:08Musk working
15:09in a factory.
15:11The video poked fun
15:12at Trump's
15:13re-industrialization
15:14gambit to bring
15:15factories back
15:16to the US
15:16and at those
15:18who believe
15:18that the policies
15:19will make America
15:20great again.
15:22These memes
15:23were erupted
15:24after US Vice President
15:25J.D. Vance
15:26mocked factory workers
15:28in China
15:28as peasants.
15:31A Let Him Cook
15:34post featuring
15:35official portraits
15:36of US President
15:37Donald Trump
15:37and Vice President
15:39J.D. Vance
15:39shared by the
15:40White House on X
15:41has sparked
15:42a wave of memes,
15:43questions
15:43and curious reactions
15:45from social media users.
15:47Now the internet
15:48is going crazy
15:49with its
15:50Let Him Cook memes.
15:51Now while NATO
15:54allies pledge
15:55over 21 billion euros
15:57in new military aid
15:58to Ukraine,
15:59Trump aide
16:00Steve Witkoff's
16:01visit to Moscow
16:03emphasizes the importance
16:04America and the
16:06American administration
16:07attaches to a
16:08negotiated settlement
16:10of the Russia-Ukraine
16:11situation.
16:12Meanwhile,
16:12representatives from
16:1350 countries
16:14have committed
16:15to a defense alliance
16:16with Ukraine
16:17at the NATO headquarters
16:18in Brussels.
16:20Hosted by Britain
16:21and Germany,
16:21the Ukraine
16:22Defense Contact Group
16:23meeting gathered together.
16:25The meeting comes
16:26after a separate
16:27gathering of
16:28the Coalition
16:28of the Willing
16:29in NATO
16:30on Thursday
16:31in which a
16:32reassurance force
16:33for Ukraine
16:34in the event
16:35of a ceasefire
16:36in the war
16:37with Russia
16:37was on the agenda.
16:39However,
16:40Germany said
16:40it can't provide Ukraine
16:42with new
16:42Patriot Air Defense
16:44systems
16:44as it is waiting
16:45on deliveries
16:46of these systems
16:47itself.
16:49Ukraine has
16:49repeatedly stressed
16:50it needs
16:51air defense systems
16:52such as the Patriots
16:53to defend itself
16:55against Russian
16:56missile attacks.
16:57As you know,
17:00Germany provided
17:01already four
17:02full systems
17:03of Patriot.
17:04We are not able
17:05to provide any more
17:06for the moment
17:07because we are waiting
17:08for being provided
17:10by Ruthenian
17:11in the years to come.
17:14which will start
17:15only in 27
17:16when I remember
17:17correctly.
17:18So we are not able
17:19to provide more
17:20but what we do
17:21is to try
17:22to collect
17:23all over the world
17:23any system
17:24in that range
17:26for air defense
17:27which we can find
17:29and we try
17:29at the same time
17:30to find money
17:31to buy
17:32anything we can get
17:34and to,
17:35as I mentioned earlier,
17:36to help
17:38to increase
17:38the capacities
17:40of the industry
17:41to produce more
17:42of that.
17:43Germany is not able
17:44to provide
17:45one more system
17:46at least not
17:47for the moment.
17:49Just a few days ago
17:50the Ghibli trend
17:51went viral
17:52and now there's
