00:30Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown Studio.
00:34It's Thursday. No Countdown tomorrow.
00:37We're going off to the races, Formula One.
00:41But I tell you what, not far from these studios,
00:43there's another great sporting event taking place.
00:45It's called the World's Strongest Man Tour Finals,
00:48and it's in the Manchester Arena.
00:50This is an extraordinary thing, Rachel.
00:52You're not going to believe these events.
00:54For instance, the giant log lift.
00:56They get the biggest log they can find and ask you to lift it up.
01:00And they've got these five huge stones.
01:02They're called the Atlas Stones, from 100 kilograms to 106.
01:05And you have to put them on various platforms.
01:08I don't know why people do all this.
01:11They'll get hernias. I'm worried about them.
01:13They wear those very thick belts to hold everything in.
01:16But there we are.
01:17Sounds pretty exhausting to me.
01:19Have I got any stories of my own great personal strength?
01:22No.
01:22No.
01:23What about you? Are you strong?
01:25I used to do shot put.
01:27Did you?
01:27I did.
01:28I think we won the Athletics Championships when I was at school.
01:32And in the team, you had to do one field event and one track event.
01:35And I was a hurdler.
01:36I can see you as a hurdler or a sprinter.
01:39I can't see you as a shot putter.
01:40Yeah.
01:41And it's all in the legs and all the rest of it.
01:43Yeah.
01:43I wasn't the best in the world.
01:44But ask Susie about strength.
01:45She's a good arm wrestler.
01:47Well, do you know, I had a little challenge with Susie.
01:50And...
01:50I know.
01:50You lost, didn't you?
01:51No.
01:52I just won.
01:54I just won.
01:55She'll let you have it.
01:56Mainly because I stamped on her toes at the critical moment.
01:59There we are.
02:00She could pin you down that, Susie.
02:02Who's with us?
02:03Dave Ashton's back.
02:04Five wins.
02:05Well done.
02:06Well done.
02:06You had a remarkable third win when you came, clawed your way back and won.
02:13And here you are again today, up against Laura MacDonald.
02:15Hello, Nick.
02:16Welcome, Laura.
02:16How are you?
02:17Fine, thank you.

02:22Yes.
02:23Your son, Toby, did okay.
02:25He certainly did.
02:25He's in the audience.
02:26He is.
02:27He was a finalist in the last series.
02:29Yes.
02:29How are you feeling about this?
02:30Did you put him up to, you know, competing in the first place?
02:33No, no.
02:34He's just enjoyed playing at home.
02:36Did you play together?
02:37Yes.
02:38Brilliant stuff.
02:39Well, good luck to you.
02:40All right.
02:41Let's have a big round of applause for Laura and Dave.
02:47And over the corner, Susie, of course.
02:51Do you remember that, Susie?
02:52The arm wrestle.
02:53Yeah.
02:55It's just a myth.
02:56You're a slight girl.
02:57No, you beat me crazy.
02:57My word, you've got powerful.
03:00Is it technique?
03:01I don't think it is, actually.
03:02Um, yes.
03:03No, I think you beat me quite easily.
03:05I think you're just being nice.
03:06You're so modest, Charlie.
03:07No, I won't be modest.
03:08She's so modest.
03:09Well, look, I did think about just, you know, right now, but I've got the wrong jacket on.
03:16I can't extend, so unfortunately we can't do it.
03:20Listen, Charlie, it's good to have you back with us.

06:24And the corner.
06:25Can we match that?
06:28There's quite expressive six there.
06:31It's American in origin, and that's galoot.
06:34If you're a big galoot, you're a big O for clumsy person.
06:39Dave, numbers.
06:40First numbers game.
06:41Off we go.
06:42One from the top, please, Rachel, and five from anywhere else.

06:47And the first one of the day is five, four, three, four, five, and 75.
06:58And the target, 532.
06:59Five, three, two.
07:01One large five, three, four, five, and 75.
07:03One large five, four, five, and 75.
07:04One large five, four, five, and 75.

07:474 plus 3, 7.
07:48Times 75.
07:495, 2, 5.
07:51Plus the other 4 and the 5.
07:53Yeah, 5, 3, 4.
07:55Now, Rachel, where have they got to? Those are missing 2.
07:59Well, if you say 5 divided by 5 is 1, add that to 75 for 76,
08:06and then 4 plus 3 again is 7, and times those together, you get 5, 3, 2.
08:16Thought on, as always, and now we turn to our first tea-time teaser,
08:20which is those grip and the clue.
08:22Those who grip it know exactly when to pull it, thanks to this.
08:27Those who grip it know exactly when to pull it, thanks to this.
08:31The answer to that is rope sight, Susie.
08:58What's this rope sight?
09:00It's a term from capnology, so bell ringers have, if they have rope sight,
09:05they have skill in judging when to pull on a bell rope when they're ringing the changes.
09:10So, Dave on 20, Laura yet to score, but there's lots of time, this is very early days.
09:14Laura, try this letters game.

10:38Sorry.
10:39What can we have, I wonder?
10:41Charlie, Susie?
10:42A ghillie is one over here.
10:44Oh, that's good.
10:46Yes, a ghillie in Scotland, particularly as a man or boy who attends someone on a hunting
10:51or fishing expedition, so somebody who's a bit of an apprentice, I suppose.
10:55A ghillie, yeah.
10:56A ghillie.
10:56Yeah.
10:57But like sort of a caddy in golf, in a way.
10:59Exactly.
11:00Exactly that idea.
11:02Uh, Dave, your letters go.

12:28Very good.
12:30And what else can we have there?
12:31Charlie and Susie?
12:33Spout.
12:34Yep.
12:34Yes.
12:35And for a seven, we also have a Tupelo's,
12:38North American or Asian trees,
12:40you'll find them in swampy habitats,
12:43used for timber, grown for timber.
12:4625 plays seven.
12:48Dave on 25.
12:50Laura, your numbers came.
12:53Inverted T, please, Rachel.
12:55Thank you, Laura.

13:45806, Dave?
13:46808.
13:47808.
13:47Off we go.
13:48Laura?
13:498 times 4 is 32.
13:518 times 4 is 32.
13:52Times 25.
13:54800.
13:55And then I did 4 minus 1 is 3.
13:59Yep.
13:599 minus that 3 is 6.
14:01It is indeed.
14:02And that's one away.
14:04Well done, Dave.
14:05One over.
14:074 times 25 plus 1 times 8.
14:11Yep, so 4 times 25, 100, plus 1, 101, times 8.
14:16808.
14:16Lovely.
14:17Very good.
14:18And sitting smack in the middle is 807, Rachel.
14:20Yes.
14:21Can you help?
14:22I found it.
14:23If you say 25 times 8 is 200, plus 4, 204, times the other 4 for 816, and then take away
14:34the 9, 806.
14:35Fabulous.
14:36Very good.
14:37Very good.
14:40So good.
14:42So there we are.
14:43We've got 32 playing 14.
14:45Dave on 32 as we turn to Charlie.
14:47Charlie.
14:49Kids.
14:50You've got two, Phoebe and Jake.
14:52And they once said that you did the most embarrassing thing that any parent could ever do.
14:57What was all that about?
14:57Well, so everybody who's got children has a moment in time when they embarrass their kids
15:03enormously.
15:04It's like a ritual.
15:05But given the nature of my work, something that happens that's embarrassing is played
15:10out in a much larger way and can be excruciating.
15:14So let's take you to a live interview we did for BBC Breakfast with Stormzy, a grime artist,
15:23chatted about all sorts of things.
15:25Everyone was very happy and it was deemed a great success.
15:29So we finished the interview and immediately afterwards for social media, which everyone's
15:36very involved in now, they often like to put little things out on social media separately
15:39from the interviews we've done.
15:40Stormzy at the time had a song out.
15:43It was, I think it was his best-selling single, which the refrain was, shut up.
15:49See what I did there?
15:50Yeah.
15:51Shut up.
15:52And I don't know if anyone remembers it, I don't remember the song, but when he does
15:54the video, everyone in the group, and again, I'm doing it again, actually, I'm going to
15:58do the embarrassing thing once again, everyone kind of does the shut up thing.
16:02You know.
16:02Yes.
16:03You know how it goes?
16:03I do, yeah.
16:04So everyone does that.
16:05And the joke was, and we did it slightly tongue-in-cheek, Louise and I were either side
16:11of him on the red sofa at BBC Breakfast.
16:14He did the line and the two of us joined in the chorus.
16:17Shut up.
16:18Like this.
16:19Which, I mean, you can know, I know just saying it sounds embarrassing.
16:23We recorded this, it went online, and it went viral, and my daughter called me to say
16:29that there's a website which is all dedicated to the most embarrassing thing parents can
16:37ever do.
16:38So this is a worldwide audience, and that moment went immediately to number one.
16:43And the catchphrase that was attached to it by the person who'd nominated it was,
16:47imagine if these two were your parents.
16:54Very good.
16:57I think you should be very proud of that.
17:00I am.
17:00I'm sure you're...
17:02Shameless.
17:02Children, shameless.
17:03Very proud of it now that it got to number one.
17:06I mean, that's going somewhere.
17:08That's brilliant.
17:0832 to 14.
17:09Dave on 32.
17:11And it's Dave's letters game.
17:13Yes, sir.
17:13Thanks, Dave.
17:15Consonant, please, Rachel.
17:16Thank you, Dave.
17:17R.
17:18And another.
17:21V.
17:22And another.
17:25S.
17:25And one more.
17:27P.
17:29And a vowel.
17:31A.
17:32And another.
17:34O.
17:35And another.
17:37I.
17:38And a consonant.
17:41T.
17:43And a vowel.
17:45And the last one, A.
17:47Countdown.
17:48I mean, I'm sorry.
17:57I don't know.
17:59I don't know.
17:59Well, Dave?
18:20Eight.
18:20An eight.
18:21Laura?
18:22Seven.
18:24And your seven is?
18:26Aviator.
18:27Aviator, Dave.
18:29S on the end.
18:30Aviators.
18:31Oh.
18:33Ouch.
18:34Yeah.
18:35Ouch.
18:36Now, Charlie and Susie, pivots you have down here.
18:41And rasp.
18:42Rasp.
18:43Yeah.
18:44Good-sounding word.
18:45But, yes, aviators, the best that we could get for eight.
18:47Bad luck, Laura.
18:49So, 40 plays 14.
18:50Laura, your letters, Gabe.
18:53Consonant, please, Rachel.
18:54Thank you, Laura.
18:56S.
18:57And another.
18:59R.
19:01And a third.
19:03W.
19:05Vowel.

26:1668 to 35.
26:18Susie, what have you for us today?
26:21I have a question from Tom Parkinson.
26:24So thanks for your email, Tom.
26:25He asks about tit for tat.
26:28Where does the phrase tit for tat originate?
26:31I go back, as always, to the trusty Oxford English Dictionary.
26:35And it simply means, of course, a response to some kind of injury.
26:39So it's a retaliation.
26:40It can be a literal one or a figurative one.
26:43And it goes all the way back to the 16th century.
26:45So it's been with us for a very long time.
26:47But the original expression was not tit for tat.
26:50It was tip for tap.
26:52And that makes much more sense when you know that tipping also meant giving someone a light tap, sort of a gentle blow, if you like.
27:00A bit like tapping somebody on the shoulder.
27:02So the idea was, if you give me a tip with your hand, I will tap you back.
27:06So tit for tat was originally tip for tap.
27:09And incidentally, we think this also gave us the sense of tipping someone off.
27:13So if you were alert, particularly if you were in the kind of criminal underworld, for example, you might tip somebody off to something going on.
27:20But tip for tat, going back to Tom's question, it was always about tip for tap.
27:23And once meant just giving somebody a little tap.
27:26Thank you, Susie.
27:3568 to 35.
