Malaysia will establish a field hospital in Myanmar to aid victims of the recent earthquake, said Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

Speaking at his Hari Raya open house in Kg Tanjung, Rantau, on Saturday (April 12), Mohamad said he had presented the proposal at the most recent Cabinet meeting, and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had agreed to it in principle.

00:00Malaysia will establish a field hospital in Myanmar to assist victims of the recent devastating earthquake.
00:08Speaking at his Hari Raya open house in Kampung Tanjung, Rantau,
00:12Foreign Minister Datuk Sri Muhammad Hassan said he presented the proposal at a recent Cabinet meeting,
00:18and Prime Minister Datuk Sri Anwar Ibrahim had agreed in principle.
00:22The field hospital, to be set up with support from the Health Ministry and the Armed Forces,
00:27will include around 30 beds, operating theatres, x-ray facilities and other medical services.
00:34Authorities are currently assessing how many surgeons and support staff will be needed to operate the facility.
00:41Muhammad noted that 84 hospitals in Myanmar were damaged by the quake,
00:45prompting Malaysia to offer further assistance through ASEAN cooperation.
00:50This includes providing mobile water purification systems to address damage to underground pipelines,
00:55as well as tents and temporary shelters for displaced residents.
01:01Aid coordination is ongoing through the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management,
01:07and Muhammad said he would engage with the Thai government to facilitate the delivery of ASEAN aid via Don Moyang Airport in Thailand.
01:16The powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on March 28,
01:22causing widespread destruction and pushing an estimated 2 million people into urgent need.
01:28Hardest-hit areas include the Sagaing region, Mandalay, Bago, Magwe, northeastern Shan State, and Nai Pitao.
01:38The tremors also affected parts of neighboring Thailand.
01:41Following his visit to Myanmar on April 5,
01:44Muhammad said it could take up to a decade for the country to fully recover.
01:49He also expressed hope for an end to the ongoing internal conflict,
01:53urging all factions to cease fighting in the wake of the disaster.
01:58According to Myanmar's State Administration Council information team,
02:01the earthquake has claimed 3,689 lives,
02:06injured 5,020 people,
02:08and left 139 others unaccounted for as of Friday night.
