00:00Hi, Orange Police.
00:14Is it recording?
00:16Yes, every conversation is recorded.
00:18Okay, well, I just want to let you know that I have a roommate that should be leaving at the end of the month.
00:24We had a conversation today and he kind of freaked me out.
00:28I just fear the worst.
00:30I'm scared of him.
00:45Vanished without a trace.
00:47An Army veteran and Orange County student has disappeared.
00:53They are not considering Ramos a victim of a crime right now because they simply don't know what happened to her.
00:58But they are investigating this case as a missing persons case with suspicious circumstances.
01:03The city of Orange is a very nice town.
01:08It's a very safe town.
01:10Downtown Orange, kind of a sleepy little historic town.
01:17There's not a lot of serious crime in the city of Orange.
01:21So having an incident like this, it was a big deal.
01:24It was a media frenzy.
01:26Cal State Fullerton student Maribel Ramos has been missing since last Thursday.
01:31Ramos never showed up to work Monday.
01:33Meanwhile, Ramos' family and friends simply don't know what happened to her.
01:37It just kind of took on a life of its own.
01:39Everybody was looking for Maribel Ramos.
01:41There were cousins of Ramos who were here in the neighborhood canvassing, handing out these flyers.
01:45She's my best friend.
01:47Actually, she's my only friend, only family member I have.
01:50Her roommate, Casey Joy, began to worry when Ramos, an Army veteran, missed class six days ago and her on-campus job.
01:57Unusual thing was being next day, Friday morning, she was not here.
02:02That's unusual.
02:02That's why I called the police.
02:04I remember that I was home and I got a call from my boss at the time, Dennis Gomez, and he said,
02:21hey, we have a suspicious missing persons case.
02:24We need you to come in.
02:26I was briefed.
02:28I learned that Maribel Ramos missed a softball game with family and friends.
02:34And they're saying, there's no way she would not come to this softball game.
02:38This is just way out of character.
02:41It really started to scare the family.
02:43And then as a detective, we start ramping things up.
02:49Because she's a missing person, we're interviewing family members.
02:52We're interviewing coworkers.
02:54We're interviewing people she dated.
02:55We're interviewing neighbors.
02:57So after talking to all these different people, everybody that we spoke to had alibis
03:03or could not have been involved in this case.
03:08Her roommate, Casey Joy, was the one question mark we kept coming back to.
03:14But at the time, we were just, you know, looking for Maribel.
03:17Growing up, my sister Maribel was inspirational to all of us, especially me.
03:25I'm her little sister.
03:27I mean, she had her temper.
03:29You know, we were sisters.
03:31We fought a lot and things like that.
03:33But Maribel was always, you know, very compassionate, thinking about the future.
03:39And she had so much to give.
03:42She was a great human.
03:45Great human.
03:49My aunt was very fun to be around, always wanted to be doing something.
03:55She was kind of the tomboy of the family, I believe.
03:58She's very competitive.
04:00And she was in the army and she kicked butt and she was very inspirational.
04:04So, when Maribel left for training, a couple months later, 9-11 happens.
04:14And then she went to war for 18 months.
04:18She did two tours.
04:21During that time, me and my aunt actually exchanged a lot of letters.
04:26I would tell her when I was being bad with my mom.
04:28I would tell her about school.
04:31I would tell her that I wanted her to take me to the park and so we can play.
04:36I have a book that she gave me, actually.
04:39She wrote a note in it.
04:41This book is for you because I love you.
04:44Pray for my safe return from your aunt Maribel.
04:48I missed her a lot.
04:51She was part of the military for eight years.
04:54After Maribel came back from her second tour, she wanted to get a bachelor's in criminal justice.
05:03She decided not to re-enlist, finished up her time.
05:06Her and my mom moved to Orange, California, got an apartment.
05:10And she then transferred to Cal State Fullerton, continued her studies.
05:16Then my mom got sick.
05:18We lost my mom in 2009.
05:24So Maribel wanted me to move in with her.
05:28But, you know, I was settled and Giselle was in school and this was just not the time.
05:35But I said if she doesn't find a roommate, I'll move in with her.
05:47And that's how she met Casey.
05:49So Maribel needed a roommate.
05:55She put an ad in Craigslist and Mr. Joy answered the ad.
06:01He drops out of the sky.
06:03He's educated.
06:04He has a little dog.
06:05She has a little dog.
06:07He sells himself as a very nice person and he's really good at that.
06:11He looked like a nice older man.
06:14He said he was applying for a job in Huntington Beach, California.
06:19Wanted to maybe see the apartment while he was in town for his interview.
06:27That's what he did.
06:28He came out, met my sister.
06:31I met him as well.
06:32He told me that he doesn't have any family, has never had a wife, has never had children.
06:44He wouldn't be bringing people to the house.
06:46She can work and do her school and not worry about, you know, the things you worry about if you have a younger roommate.
06:55At the time, Maribel was close to getting her degree.
06:59She was very focused, working and studying.
07:03It seemed like it would be a good fit.
07:07Me and my sister tend to always see the good in people.
07:11You know, it's like, oh, he seems nice.
07:12He's quiet.
07:13My mom was right.
07:16She said, be careful of the quiet ones.
07:24So Casey moved in.
07:26Everything was going smoothly.
07:29A couple of months go by and he was always at home.
07:33He didn't have friends.
07:36It's sad because we felt his loneliness.
07:39Maribel, being the type of human that she is, invited him to come out and share a meal with everyone.
07:48He met our aunts and uncles and they would joke with him and he was laughing and fit in.
08:00And that's how he gradually became friends with Maribel.
08:03Maribel, they went to the dog park together.
08:07If my sister went to the grocery store and he needed something, she'd bring it for him.
08:11If there was a family party, hey, you know, we're going if you want to go.
08:15Maribel, this was a very nice time for him.
08:26At the very beginning of these investigations, the last person that sees the person alive is always going to be a suspect.
08:34In this case, Casey Joy was the last one that was with Maribel, so he became the target of our investigation.
08:45Well, again, you're not under arrest.
08:48Thanks for coming down here voluntarily.
08:51That's huge.
08:53As you know, right now, there's some people, some family and friends that are worried about Maribel, your roommate.
08:59And I'm also a friend, and I care about her very much.
09:03She's my best friend and roommate.
09:07So when was the last time that you saw her?
09:10About 9 p.m.
09:12That's when we talked about 9 o'clock and I went out.
09:15So you last saw her at 9 p.m.
09:18And then you left for an hour, came back at 10, and she was gone.
09:22So where did you go for an hour?
09:24Not really an hour.
09:25I just drove down to the, almost down to the Tustin, Tustin.
09:29Sometimes I get frustrated.
09:30I just drove down.
09:30I had to drive back.
09:31I just came back in.
09:33You just drove down to Tustin?
09:34Yeah, I drove to drive.
09:35Yeah, I just drove down and come back.
09:37I didn't go anywhere.
09:40So according to Mr. Joy, when he was asked where he was, he said that he had gone for a drive.
09:46That he drove up and down Tustin in the city of Orange.
09:52And when he got home, she was gone.
09:54And he never saw her again.
09:57I don't think that it's, it didn't sound like the truth, but you couldn't prove otherwise at the time.
10:03The summer before she went missing, I was driving and he called me.
10:17He starts telling me, you know, I want to tell you something.
10:19And I know that your sister wants to get married.
10:22She wants to have kids.
10:24I want to be the man that she's looking for.
10:27I, I, I'm like, what, what is, like, I was in shock.
10:31Like, whoa, you know?
10:32This was out of the blue.
10:34And then he said he was in love with her and that they had a great friendship and that he loves the family.
10:41I told him, like, Casey, you're a nice man.
10:43You can definitely have everything that you're looking for.
10:47I said, but it's not my sister.
10:50You guys are not a match.
10:51You're older.
10:53She's young.
10:54She wants to get married.
10:55She wants to have kids.
10:57The type of partner that she needs, that's not you.
11:01You're her friend.
11:02I'm sorry, but my sister will never like you like that.
11:10He just stayed quiet.
11:12He didn't say much.
11:13And then we ended the conversation.
11:15It was interesting.
11:18Now that I think about this, I mean, I didn't feel comfortable with the situation for whatever reason.
11:23And I then called her and talked to her.
11:26I said, Maribel, you have to talk to him.
11:28You have to figure it out.
11:29If this is the case, then he can't live with you anymore.
11:31I definitely felt the weight of his words, and that was just not okay.
11:38He's in her house.
11:40Those things can go terribly wrong.
11:42That was the first major red flag.
11:53And then after that, Maribel called me, and she said, Lucy, don't worry about it, sis.
12:00We talked, and he was just having a moment.
12:04He said, he just has a crush on me.
12:06You told him everything.
12:07So he's fine now.
12:09She said, it's okay.
12:10After that, there was a lot of weird things that all of a sudden just spiraled.
12:17There was some attempts by him to better position himself to be, you know, more than a roommate to her.
12:25We learned that Maribel said, hey, you know what, Casey, you'd look good with a tattoo.
12:32And so he comes home with a giant Bengal tiger tattoo on his arm.
12:37And he was all of a sudden doing all of these things, like just changing himself.
12:43He is, like, dressing differently and going out a lot, trying to be more, like, I don't know, hip.
12:51Maybe to look more appealing to Maribel, he spent over $10,000 to have his face look younger and some plastic surgery done.
13:03One day I go over and he was all bandaged up.
13:07I said, what happened, Casey?
13:09Oh, I just, I just got some, you know, I just had to do some stuff.
13:13And I said, okay.
13:14I don't know what he did to himself.
13:20This weird behavior kind of snowballed and Casey's feelings towards Maribel were not reciprocated.
13:26She didn't want a relationship with him.
13:29I believe that put him over the edge.
13:31I think he snapped.
13:32You know, he was so obsessed with her, if he couldn't have her, no one was going to have her.
13:42So when we start an investigation like this, we do an in-house search of our records.
13:48And in this case, we learned that approximately two weeks prior to Maribel's disappearance, Maribel calls the police.
13:57Hi, Orange Police.
14:06Okay, well, I just want to let you know that I have a roommate that should be leaving at the end of the month.
14:13We had a conversation today that he kind of freaked me out.
14:16I'm not feeling comfortable around him anymore.
14:18I'm feeling threatened.
14:20What's your name?
14:20And my name is Maribel.
14:23Maribel.
14:24My name is...
14:25What's your last name, Maribel?
14:31Bravo.
14:32Sorry, Maribel is.
14:33Okay.
14:37He didn't pay Maribel rent.
14:40So then she paid everything herself.
14:42That was actually very nice of her.
14:43That's not something my sister usually...
14:46You don't mess with her money.
14:47So she talked to him and was like, hey, see what's going on.
14:52Regardless of the friendship, you have a responsibility.
14:56He was really upset.
14:58They got into a huge fight.
15:00And that's when my sister said, oh, we're not going to be friends anymore.
15:03You're going to have to move out.
15:04At the end of the month, I want him to leave.
15:06And from now until then, I just feel like I have to lock my door, which I will.
15:12Because he sounded like he would hurt me.
15:14Like, it was weird.
15:18Why are you crying?
15:20Because I'm afraid.
15:22What?
15:23Your roommate?
15:25I'm not comfortable with him anymore.
15:28I'm just, like, calling so that you guys know that if something happens, that I did it
15:33because I was trying to defend myself.
15:36The responding officer that went out to the apartment, he talked to both of them.
15:43And Maribel didn't make a report.
15:45All she wanted was him to go.
15:47She didn't elaborate much more than that.
15:50The officer asked Maribel if she was going to be okay.
15:53And she said, yeah.
15:54And he was going to be moving out at the end of the month.
15:56And she was good with that.
15:57She wanted documented.
15:59He has to get out because he's not paying rent.
16:01And she was feeling uncomfortable and threatened.
16:06The last time Maribel was actually seen was at 7.15 p.m. on May the 2nd while she's depositing
16:20her rent check into the drop box at the apartment complex.
16:25That was the last time we actually got her on video.
16:37When Maribel went back to the apartment, she got into a heated argument with Casey Joy.
16:43Casey was supposed to be out of the house, but he wanted a life with Maribel.
16:53At this point, he had every excuse to try to stay there as long as he could.
16:57He needed more time.
16:58He was trying to get another job.
17:00And he wasn't moving out.
17:02Maribel told him, you're out and you need to be out tomorrow.
17:08So he starts cussing at her.
17:10Maribel gets upset.
17:11And she contacted her friend Paul, who she puts on speakerphone.
17:15Paul tells him, if your stuff's not out by tomorrow, I will physically take your stuff out of that apartment.
17:22And that was the last phone call on Maribel's phone.
17:25How bad did the argument get?
17:42Nothing bad.
17:43I would talk.
17:44She talked to Paul and she'd go into her bedroom, close the door.
17:50Then I just went out, came back in.
17:53And when I came back in, she was not here.
18:01Friday morning, I was at work.
18:04Then I got a message from Casey telling me, oh, your sister didn't come home.
18:10I called the police, but they said that I couldn't make a report because she hasn't been missing for 24 hours.
18:16And then it would look bad on her record.
18:18And I'm like, what is he talking about?
18:20Because he had told me that he was in love with her, I thought, oh, God, he just wants to know where she's at.
18:27He probably wants me to tell him where she is.
18:29And so I told him, Casey, it's none of your business.
18:33Don't worry about it.
18:34Oh, well, she left her light on and she never leaves her light on.
18:38And I'm like, oh, my God, this guy is just ridiculous.
18:41He doesn't need to be calling me.
18:43He doesn't need to be texting me.
18:44All we need to know is you're gone.
18:46After Casey messaged me on Friday morning, I messaged her just to say hi, something along those words.
18:54And then she didn't text me back.
18:56But it was a Friday.
18:58I know she's busy.
18:59I didn't feel anything weird at the moment.
19:01I just felt he was weird.
19:04Like, what's wrong with this man?
19:05After work, I had dinner plans with a friend, went to dinner.
19:18Then I got a phone call from my cousin's wife and she said, please don't worry, but Maribel did not make it to the game.
19:27None of us have talked to her.
19:30Go to her house.
19:31We're all going there.
19:33We call the police.
19:35I think subconsciously, my feelings, everything just really crashed and I just started crying.
19:43I was a mess, like on a whole other level.
19:49After she doesn't show up for the softball game, that's when the family goes over to her house to do the welfare check.
19:56Maribel's car was in the garage.
19:58Her bedroom light is on and nobody's answering the door.
20:01The police come and knock on the door.
20:07They can't get a hold of anybody in the apartment.
20:09And so they make the decision to force entry.
20:12So as soon as I get there, I pull up to her street and there's like four cop cars out there.
20:17There's lights.
20:18And so I just see all these red lights.
20:22And the first thought that came to my mind was I imagined my sister dead in the house on her bed.
20:28And so I, like, parked my car somewhere.
20:32I left it.
20:33Got out.
20:33I ran into the house.
20:34The door's open because the police is already in there.
20:37I go to her room and her bed's not done.
20:40It's like her bed's always done.
20:42She doesn't leave without making her bed.
20:46I mean, it wasn't just undone.
20:47It was a mess.
20:49At that moment, I just knew something was really off.
20:52And where's Casey?
20:53I just knew that he did something to her.
20:58The police try to locate Mr. Joy.
21:01Several phone calls are being made to his phone.
21:04He doesn't answer those calls.
21:06That was kind of a red flag for us.
21:09We have police and family and everyone trying to find out where she's at.
21:12And the roommate was not there.
21:13It turns out Casey was sitting in the car outside the apartment with the binoculars just watching the house.
21:26He actually watches as the family members are knocking on the door and they're trying to get somebody's attention inside.
21:33He watches as the police come and knock on the door.
21:37Maybe an hour into it, he actually leaves his vehicle and actually walks up to the residence.
21:42He kind of just walks up to the officers and kind of asks what's going on.
21:45Very casual, very nonchalant.
21:49And then all of a sudden, Casey pops out of the back of a car into the crowd.
21:54And I see him and I'm like, Casey, where's my sister?
21:58He didn't even look at me.
22:00He didn't even turn around.
22:01He went straight to the police officer and immediately I said, okay, all right.
22:07So I pointed the finger at him immediately.
22:12That night, Detective Ramirez asked Casey if he'd come down and talk to us.
22:26So we brought him here to the station and asked him some follow-up questions.
22:30Her baseball bat was in the closet.
22:32Her baseball bat or her bag was right in the closet.
22:35She didn't go play the game.
22:37Her bag, her baseball bat or in the closet because she didn't go to the game.
22:42It was a little bit frustrating kind of getting facts out of him because he kind of spoke broken English.
22:46He would make the question and answer just a little difficult, act confused, like he wasn't sure what I was asking him.
23:03We found that afterwards.
23:04Casey had moved to the States as a young kid and he spoke very good English, very good English.
23:10People that knew him real well didn't even know where this accent came from.
23:15They even asked me, hey, where did that accent come from?
23:18And I'm like, what accents?
23:19They said, he's never talked like that.
23:22And I said, my real concern about her friends or relatives, I said, I said, I think I have not, they think I did something.
23:31I honestly have, I worry about that.
23:34Some of the neighbors said, ever since this kind of investigation started, his English kind of went downhill.
23:40He was trying to give off that feel sorry for me vibe, acting like he's this nice man who didn't do anything, who barely speaks English all of a sudden.
23:50Oh God, it was just, what a show.
23:59So do you have anything to do with her being gone right now?
24:02Absolutely nothing.
24:08And I can know where she is too.
24:11And who picked that up?
24:15Okay.
24:16How'd you get all these scratches on you?
24:24During the initial interview with the police, Detective Ramirez notices something on Casey Joy's arms.
24:31There's something on the avenue, I had a scratch there.
24:35He's sitting there with these scratches on him.
24:37Those alone made the hair on the back of your neck stand up.
24:42They're fresh, they're raised, they have dry blood on them.
24:46You can tell they've been within a few days.
24:49I'm thinking, how's he going to explain these?
24:50We go to Eisenhower Park all the time.
24:55Uh-huh.
24:55We pick up fishing lines all the time.
24:58You go there, fishing lines.
25:02Those are from fishing?
25:03No, no, no, no.
25:04I'm ready to explain.
25:05His answer to us was that he had received those scratches, taken some fishing line from some bushes or something.
25:14He told us right off the bat, oh, this is where it happened, and this is the exact park.
25:18Sure enough, you get up there, and there's these vicious thorns that absolutely could cause something like that.
25:24And it's just like, wow, where did he come up with that one?
25:27Even though it was hard to believe, you know, how would we prove that he didn't?
25:42We were all just crying almost, I wouldn't say 24 hours of the day, but it felt that way.
25:49It just felt so unreal.
25:52We were all just hoping that she was still out there.
25:58I opened up an account on Facebook, and I posted her picture and was hoping this interaction with the public will help us.
26:10I don't know how, but it will.
26:12I have friends that actually helped me pass out flyers.
26:18My teachers put them up at school since my high school was kind of closer to my aunt's house.
26:25So many people were involved and wanted to help out.
26:29Everyone was looking for Maribel, her army family, her marine family, co-workers.
26:35We were trying to think about anything that could help.
26:50We did hold a candlelight vigil.
26:54It was friends and family, so we just all came together to support one another.
26:58Because at the end of the day, we were all there for the same reason, and it was just to find my aunt, Maribel.
27:06Casey did, in fact, attend.
27:09He wasn't part of it.
27:12He just kept saying, I'm very sad.
27:15I don't want to be around the family right now.
27:18And it just seemed very off since he seemed to care so much about my aunt, Maribel.
27:23And then there were some online discussions where Maribel was referred to by Casey in the past tense.
27:36Which seemed odd, and there were actually people that commented on it.
27:41Like, why are you using past tense?
27:44I remember Saturday, we were supposed to go to dinner with her as her guest.
28:02Cal State was having a dinner, and Maribel was going to be speaking.
28:06I went to Maribel's apartment, thinking if she took things with her, maybe that lets me know that she's planning on going to the dinner.
28:20I wanted to look for clues, but everything looked the same.
28:23She had not taken any items.
28:26And then, when I left the apartment, Casey was standing at the door.
28:33And then I just said to him,
28:38If my sister's not at this dinner, then somebody must have killed her.
28:44And he said, in his, uh, in his fake voice, obviously,
28:51Oh, Lucy, don't say that.
28:53And then I left.
28:58Um, I didn't understand the moment, but I understand it now.
29:14This case had challenges, um, mostly because Mr. Joy is a smart man.
29:20He's educated. He sells himself as a very nice person.
29:24And it just seemed that everything that we brought to him, he would reason out of it.
29:30He had done a decent job covering his tracks.
29:34During the initial investigation, we had no evidence.
29:36We searched her in her house, in her vehicle.
29:38As the days passed, we talked to everyone.
29:42Everyone that was, uh, important in her life.
29:44Friends that she had, co-workers that she had, people that she'd met at school.
29:49There were prior boyfriends and people she had been dating, uh, that the police investigated.
29:56Each and every one of them had a solid alibi.
29:59The only person that didn't have a good explanation of where they were
30:03and what they were doing at the time of her disappearance was Casey Joy.
30:08Every day that went by just seemed like he was beating us.
30:12Based on the scratches that he had on him, the 911 call to the police,
30:17you couldn't help but have this feeling that he's responsible for her being gone.
30:27I decided to dig into Mr. Joy's history.
30:32He came from Tennessee and he fled that state because everything had gone bad for him over there.
30:39Just prior to him moving from Tennessee to Orange, he had lost his job.
30:44His parents passed away. He got into an argument with his sister over money,
30:50inheritance from his parents. So he was kind of isolated. He really had nowhere to go.
30:55I called and I spoke to his sister and she told me that Mr. Joy had a really bad temper.
31:04She was scared to the point where she got a restraining order against him.
31:10She'll tell you that he's a monster.
31:14We decided to assign a surveillance team to monitor Mr. Joy's activities 24-7.
31:24If he did this, you know, most likely he will slip.
31:31They set up a surveillance team and watched him.
31:33So Casey Joy ends up going to the library.
31:45And at Orange Library, you can check out or rent, if you will, free of charge laptops.
31:54Casey Joy would use the public computers there and log in.
31:57And then we could obtain intel inside the library remotely.
32:13We were able to monitor his every movement on the computer. The surveillance team would radio back to
32:19us at the station what he was doing or what he was looking up.
32:24Yeah, he's asking, does the cell phone have to be turned on to trace?
32:28He had some really suspicious searches on some search engines.
32:35Another time he entered in, how long does it take a human body to decay? The problem with that was
32:43those facts in and of themselves are not enough to file the case. He could want to know as an innocent
32:48person, how long do we have until the body decays? Or if she's got her cell phone on her,
32:53will we be able to find her? There were still innocent explanations, even with those items that make
33:00you look guilty. And it looks like he's typing in the missing person's name. The goal was to make
33:06sure all the evidence was collected, because you got to prove he killed Maribel beyond a reasonable
33:12doubt to all 12 jurors. He's reading the comments on the article. Looks like he's writing one too.
33:23Every morning, every time I heard the birds outside, it was like,
33:41another day. And I felt extreme sadness, extreme.
33:47I asked friends from a church that I used to attend to come and pray with me outside of her house.
33:59And I went inside, and I looked at KC, and he looked terrible this time. His face, he just looked
34:08ugly, and he just looked ugly. And I said, you want to pray with us?
34:18He said, oh, no, no, no. You guys go ahead.
34:22So he sat there in the living room. He was just a couple feet away from us.
34:28He says, while we were praying outside for Maribel, he was there.
34:34I was at my desk
35:03working on the case
35:05when I received a phone call
35:06from the guys at the library
35:08saying, hey, you're not going to believe
35:09what he just did.
35:11He logs in.
35:13He sees they were doing an awareness walk
35:15at Peters Canyon.
35:18It was my mom that planned the awareness walk.
35:22Peters Canyon is actually a trail
35:24that my Aunt Maribel took me and my mom to,
35:27so we had planned it to walk out there
35:30and see if maybe for some odd reason
35:33she was over there.
35:36Ultimately, the awareness walk
35:37is what kind of pushed Casey over the edge,
35:41if you will.
35:47He typed in the address
35:48for the awareness walk
35:49onto a Google map
35:51and then zooms out
35:53and then switches to satellite view.
35:56and he kind of zooms in close,
36:02zooms in close
36:02and then zooms in on a tree
36:06in a remote canyon.
36:12Then he deletes his history.
36:14I didn't even have to say it.
36:21Somebody had already told a couple of guys
36:23to start going out to that area.
36:26It's okay.
36:45It's okay.
36:45The location was so remote
37:00that the only marker we had
37:03was this large bush
37:05that was right off the side of the road.
37:07That's where the detectives kind of led us.
37:09Everyone kind of took a portion
37:11of this open area
37:13and looked for anything suspicious.
37:19As we kind of turned this corner
37:20underneath this large tree...
37:23I don't think it was more than a half hour
37:27that I got a call back from him
37:29saying,
37:29you're not going to believe this,
37:30but we found her.
37:31That autopsy is being conducted today.
37:38As of now,
37:39we do not know the identity of that body,
37:41so we don't know if it is that
37:43of missing Cal State Fullerton student
37:45Maribel Ramos.
37:46Now, take a look behind me.
37:47That body...
37:48I see Channel 5
37:49talking about
37:51there's a body that they found,
37:53and at that point,
37:54in that moment,
37:55honestly,
37:56it was, like, not even news to me.
37:58Joey called me
37:59while I was watching the TV,
38:00and I said,
38:01Joey, can you take me over there?
38:03You show me any piece of her,
38:05and I will know.
38:06Show me her hand.
38:08Show me a piece of that body,
38:09and I can tell you right now
38:11if it's her or not.
38:13I can't do that.
38:14Okay.
38:16So I hung up on him.
38:17There's no need to talk.
38:19My grief was rage.
38:20At that point,
38:30we went to make contact
38:32with Mr. Joy.
38:33The Iraqi war veteran
38:34within just the past hour,
38:36police in Orange
38:37announced that they had identified...
38:39We believed that
38:40he was monitoring,
38:42you know, news.
38:43He knew that the body
38:45had been recovered
38:45and that, you know,
38:47he knew something
38:47was going to be happening soon.
38:49And so when we got
38:51to the apartment,
38:52he jumped out the window
38:53and fled.
38:59Surveillance had seen him do this,
39:01and they stopped him
39:02and detained him,
39:03and then we ultimately
39:04arrested him.
39:07When the guys
39:08were handcuffing him,
39:09I remember them saying,
39:10you better have
39:10some good evidence.
39:11My theory is that
39:33because she was such
39:34a tough person,
39:35because she was fit,
39:36and I believe that
39:37had she had a chance,
39:40she would have
39:41either killed him
39:42or left quite a crime scene.
39:46And because it wasn't there,
39:48I believe that he
39:50had the drop on her,
39:51that he was able
39:52to come in to her room
39:53when she was asleep
39:55and smother her.
40:00And then take her body
40:02out to the canyon.
40:06As close as I thought
40:10we were to having him
40:11tell us what happened,
40:13to this day,
40:14I don't think he's
40:15taken any responsibility.
40:17He almost got away
40:28with murder,
40:29ladies and gentlemen.
40:30He almost got away
40:31with it.
40:32But he didn't.
40:34At the trial,
40:35we couldn't really prove
40:36how he actually killed her.
40:39But when Casey
40:40did the Google search
40:42and zoomed in
40:42on the tree,
40:43it was like
40:44a virtual drive-by,
40:45which we ultimately
40:47used to prove Casey Joy
40:48killed Maribel Ramos.
40:56I think he was
40:58wrapped up in Maribel.
41:00I think he loved her
41:01and I think
41:02he couldn't just
41:03wrap his head around
41:04thinking he was going
41:06to live his life
41:07without her.
41:09He's not going
41:10to have a place to live
41:10and he doesn't have a job.
41:11He's got nowhere to go.
41:13Casey knew he came
41:14to the end of the road
41:15and he just
41:15couldn't deal with it.
41:24I wrote a letter
41:25to read to him
41:26at the sentence hearing.
41:28Didn't get to it.
41:29I couldn't.
41:30I didn't.
41:31I didn't have
41:32the courage
41:34to read it.
41:34I just didn't.
41:36I mean,
41:37he wasn't going
41:37to listen to anything
41:38I had to say.
41:40What did it say?
41:42I basically
41:43was asking Casey
41:46what he had done
41:48and I wish
41:49I never had met him.
41:51I wish he would have
41:52never been in my life.
41:54I don't wish
41:54any bad on anyone
41:56ever,
41:57but definitely
41:58his time will come
42:00to where
42:01he just
42:03is going to
42:04maybe feel
42:05what we felt
42:06but in a different way.
42:08But I couldn't.
42:09It was too much
42:10for me to read it.
42:11My sister's gone.
42:20It's an emptiness
42:21that will not be filled.
42:24It's very painful
42:25to know that
42:27she should be here
42:28and to see my daughter,
42:32to feel her pain
42:33and see it.
42:34It's,
42:34it's
42:35crushes me.
42:38I felt guilty
42:39for a long time.
42:40I did.
42:42I feel like
42:42if I would have
42:43moved in with her,
42:44she would have
42:45never met him.
42:48I,
42:48I,
42:49I'm,
42:50I'm better
42:51with that now.
42:52With my faith
42:53than what I believe in,
42:54you know,
42:54at the end of the day
42:55I know that
42:56regardless,
42:57I mean,
42:57this was not,
42:59you know,
42:59in God's will,
43:00but
43:00it was going to happen.
43:03There's more to this life
43:04than just this life.
43:06That is what keeps
43:07love in my heart.
43:08That is what keeps
43:09hope in my soul.
43:10when you remember
43:15we're still here,
43:16what would you say to her?
43:18Oh my God,
43:19I,
43:19I love her.
43:21That I love her,
43:22um,
43:23that I would do
43:24anything for her
43:26and,
43:27uh,
43:27I would just love
43:30to
43:30grow old with her.
43:32Yeah.
43:33Yeah.
43:34Absolutely.
43:35one more hug.
43:45Yeah.
43:48Yeah.
43:49Yeah.
