Alors qu'il peine à écrire le début de son premier livre au milieu des gratte-ciel de Manhattan, Isaac Davis, auteur de sketches pour la télévision, se remémore son passé. De son récent divorce, il lui reste des rapports difficiles avec son ex-épouse, qui est devenue lesbienne et menace à présent de publier l'histoire de leur vie. Isaac vit avec Tracy, une adolescente de 17 ans, dont il s'efforce maladroitement de guider les premiers pas.
