00:00Hey friend, and welcome to another episode of Shop Essence Live in partnership with the New Voices family.
00:06I am your host, Noni Donovan, and you know what I have been loving? Shampoo bars.
00:12Have you guys heard of this? We are today interviewing this amazing Black female entrepreneur that has created this line of natural products.
00:21We have shampoo bars. There's Shea Moisture. There's so many things, and get an education on how you should be washing your hair, because I even learned a few things trying this out.
00:32Everybody, welcome to the show, Laquita Thomas. Hey girl, hey.
00:39Oh, I'm so excited to get into your line. Everything smells amazing. I'm addicted to everything.
00:45I'm going to have to order, like I've been using it so much, I'm going to have to order a lot more.
00:49But, I would love for you, before we get into your products, to talk about your journey and how you came up with Bobium products.
00:59All righty. Now, I started doing children's hair, styling hair, and you know how mothers are busy. I understand that.
01:08But they would drop off their kids to my house, aka my mother's house. I was doing hair in my mother's living room.
01:13And they would bring them over, and their hair is still in the same style that either I put in four or five weeks ago, who knows how long.
01:21And I would have to take their hair down and, of course, wash it and get it ready for the next style.
01:27So, me, not having, you know, too many funds. I would just go in my mother's cabinet. She had all kinds of good smelling stuff in there.
01:34Don't you always have the best?
01:36Yeah, like mom got it.
01:37So, I would use her stuff. Let me wash their hair real quick. Don't want some whatever, you know.
01:42And then she would be like, my things are missing. I'm like, oh, I washed my hair.
01:46Did you wash your hair or somebody else's hair?
01:48Oh, okay. I'll replace it, you know.
01:51And then over the years, I was like, you know what? Let me make, try to mix some stuff and make my own, you know, products.
01:59So, I started just as a hobby, really, and just looking for things that were natural.
02:07And I just started mixing things, and then I just got into soap.
02:10So, I started formulating the soap that with ingredients that's good for our hair.
02:16And then I had all those little kids as my testers.
02:19So, they would come over.
02:20Oh, I will hope now.
02:21Like, I hope someone's hair is not washed or whatever.
02:24At first, I used to regret it.
02:25But then I cannot wait till someone come with their hair just looking crazy so I can test this on them.
02:30And little kids, hey, they're like, whatever.
02:32So, I would wash their hair, and then I was making butter as well.
02:36And then when their parents picked them up, they're like, oh, you did such a good job.
02:39Here's your $20.
02:41And, yes, I charged $20.
02:42I don't even know why I was charging just that $20, and that's all.
02:44But their hair is braided and washed.
02:47And then they would ask, like, what is that you put in their hair?
02:51And I'm like, oh, I just made this shea butter, or I was using this.
02:54I'm like, do you have any more of that where I can take care of their hair during the week when I don't see you?
02:59I'm like, oh, sure, take it.
03:00And one instant, it was like years I was doing this.
03:03My mother was over at my house, and she was like, we were going somewhere, and she watched the whole transaction.
03:09And she said, well, did that lady pay you for that?
03:11I'm like, well, yeah, she paid me for the hairstyle, of course.
03:14And she was like, no, I'm not talking about the hairstyle.
03:16I'm talking about what you handed them later, whatever you said that was in that container.
03:19I was like, oh, no, I'm just playing around, and this is just something.
03:22She was like, no, you need to package that.
03:25And next time you say this is $10 more or $5 more.
03:29I'm like, mom, always been the business person.
03:31I was like, no, I was like, okay.
03:34And she was like, then you need to put it on the website as well.
03:37I'm like, all right.
03:38So I did not do it.
03:39I'm like, all right, mom, let's go.
03:41And she would ask me like once a month, is that stuff on the website yet?
03:45I've been telling my friends, telling your friends, I didn't put nothing on the website.
03:49So I just got a website up, and I put four items on it.
03:54And then I'm at work.
03:55I was editing, and I'm at work, and I get a ding, you got a sale.
03:58I was like, oh, mom's trying to prove a point.
04:00She bought something.
04:01And I go in there.
04:02I'm like, this is not her name.
04:04Who is this?
04:05And who does she know in California, you know, 2,000 plus miles away?
04:09I was like, probably one of her friends from group Bible study or something.
04:12And then the next week, ding, ding, more sales.
04:14And I'm like, she sure knows a lot of people because I only told her.
04:19But little did I know that that site that I put my four items on, it had its own traffic.
04:24And people were just typing in natural or whatever, and it was dinging up.
04:29And then I was like, see, I told you.
04:31Long story short, I ended up quitting the editing job I was working at full time and just doing,
04:38I added more stuff.
04:39People kept asking, oh, do you have a butter?
04:41Oh, yeah, I got that.
04:42I didn't have butter at the first.
04:43But I would go home, make the butter, and then ship that.
04:46Oh, do you have something to, you know, as a conditioner?
04:48Like, pretty much no, but I will make it.
04:50And I would do that.
04:51So that's how it just snowballed.
04:53And I got, you know, smaller stores, beauty supplies.
04:56They started ordering.
04:58And the rest is history.
05:00So from just looking for a solution to, you know, help these kids with their hair turned into a full-fledged business.
05:10Full-fledged business you are.
05:14And we love hearing success stories like that.
05:17And shout out to mom.
05:18Right.
05:19Hold on, baby girl.
05:20We need to be charging people for this.
05:22What I love so much about your line, everything's so multipurpose.
05:27And that's really helpful for moms, busy moms, got kids.
05:33Also, I can only imagine.
05:35I can't wait to travel with this.
05:37Because we know, y'all, we know when we go to these hotels, they don't have shampoo for our hair.
05:43So now we have our incredible shampoo bar.
05:46So we have quite a bit to go through with your products.
05:49What's the first thing that you'd like to highlight today?
05:51Okay, so the Star Hero product are the shampoo bars.
05:58And again, like you said, I like things that are versatile.
06:01So you could actually, I mean, it's a shampoo bar formulated for your hair.
06:05So no parabens, harsh detergents like surfactants or any chemicals.
06:11I try to keep all the scents more essential oils.
06:14I get people to ask me for like a sweet, like buttercream or something.
06:19But I really stick to like your lavenders, your peppermints, just things that are natural.
06:26And it's because I did formulate them for children's hair.
06:29So I was doing all ages two and up.
06:32So this is how I kind of, it was accidental, but yet on purpose, where I just kept the same formula from, you know, children's hair to adult's hair.
06:41And I like the idea, like you say, you can grab that one bar and you can actually bathe with it as well.
06:49It's not going to know if it's your hair or your body, but it's definitely good for your hair and your skin, your scalp has skin.
06:57So you can use it all over.
06:59And all of the products that I make are pretty much, like you said, it's multipurpose.
07:04So you just have that bar somewhere and you're like, oh, I forgot my soap.
07:07Nope.
07:08You can just take it in the shower and use it as soap as well.
07:10So great.
07:12Can you talk a little bit about this bar in particular that I am holding up?
07:17What I noticed using these, which is really good for our hair, it doesn't have a huge amount of lather, which is good.
07:26Can you talk about the ingredients and why that is good for a favorite?
07:30Now that is the one you have in your hand is the peppermint one, I'm sure.
07:35The Roots Bar, and it's one of my newer line, I was in the last few years, really, because I have a lot of hair clients who are suffering from, you know, hair loss.
07:47So I formulate that with the essential oils that will help with growth and scalp stimulation.
07:54And I try to put in there ingredients that you can pronounce, things that, you know, aren't heavy, chemical laden.
08:04And you can just pronounce everything.
08:05The things that you may not know, I do put like what they are used for in the bar.
08:11But definitely it's it's good for all hair types, all ages.
08:17And I think due to the fact that it doesn't have many, you know, those harsh foaming chemicals in it, it may not lather as much as a regular shampoo bar.
08:30I mean, a regular shampoo, I should say.
08:32But hey, the second wash, if you do second, a second wash, you will get a ton of lather, which may be kind of stripping.
08:40So definitely follow with a conditioner because people like that.
08:43I say lather once, but people like that extra, you know, they're used to that extra clean.
08:48They want to dig in there.
08:50And then you definitely need to follow with a shampoo because it's I mean, a conditioner because it's very concentrated.
08:57So this is why you get so many uses out of one shampoo bar.
09:01I mean, that bar in your hand can last as long as two 16 ounce bottles of shampoo, over 32 ounces, that tiny five ounce bar.
09:11We love that, especially when you have multiple heads in the house.
09:15We absolutely love, love, love.
09:18And then can you talk about this one?
09:20This one is my favorite.
09:22Right now, that is more of a detox bar.
09:25It has result clay, which is it'll help with product buildup.
09:30I have a lot of swimmers who use it.
09:33And if you put a lot of gels and stuff in your hair, it definitely gives your hair a fresh start.
09:40And with that chocolate smell, don't eat it.
09:43I have some people who have tasted it and said it tastes like chocolate, but it really does not.
09:49It's just psychological.
09:50But all of the ingredients in there are made to give your scalp a good detox.
09:55And I would say maybe once a month with that.
09:58Once a month.
09:58That is really, really good to know.
10:00Before we move on to the other products, because you had such a great, a great little panel of instructions here.
10:08Can we talk about the process of using a shampoo bar and the things that people should know when doing it step by step?
10:17All right.
10:18Now, I did that purposely because some people, they have not used shampoo bars before.
10:23And it's also a way to make the product last.
10:28So you would do like you did.
10:30You get in your shower or however you're seeing, wet your hair first.
10:34And then you want to wet the bar.
10:36Some of the bars have little minerals and essential oils in there that may cause it to have a rough surface.
10:44So you do want to get the bar nice and wet as well.
10:48And then you want to, while your hair is wet, either you separate your hair in four parts or you keep your hair as is.
10:56You take the bar, you rub it gently around the perimeter, around your whole hair to create lather.
11:01And then once down the middle, and then you put the bar down and then you lather using your, the pads of your fingers.
11:08It's tempting to use your fingernails.
11:10I know.
11:11But the pads of your fingers, you're going to go in a circular motion.
11:14And that was life changing, Lakita, because I always thought you wanted to get in there with your fingernails.
11:19So, like, get any of the whatever dry skin or flakes out of there.
11:24Right.
11:25Why the recommendation to use the pads of your fingers as opposed to the thing?
11:28Because you don't want to scratch your scalp while you're, you know, you don't want to cause a scab or a sore in your scalp.
11:35And you want to get used to that because if you're doing children's hair, seniors' hair, you really don't want to break the skin.
11:43I know that feels good to get that deep, deep, you know, clean with your fingernails.
11:48But you can use now a massage shampoo bar.
11:52Yes, yes.
11:53You know, you have, like, do one that has smooth bristles, not one with sharp.
11:58And so after you do your lathering routine, like I said, around the perimeter and once down the middle, you can take your massager in there, your shampoo, and then create the lather and wash your hair with that.
12:09And that'll give you that same type of feeling if you really have that sensation to dig in.
12:14But you'll get the same results if you use your pads of your fingers versus your fingernails.
12:20Even if you have a lot of buildup, it'll still, the lather is what kind of carries away the debris and the oil.
12:28So you really don't need to use a finger.
12:30It's one of those things where you have to practice and you'll see.
12:33We're just so used to it because we thought that's what you're supposed to do.
12:36Like a deep scalp massage, but you can do the same thing.
12:40Like when you go to a masseuse, they don't use their nails and be scraping across your back.
12:44They use their fingers.
12:45I hope not.
12:46Don't go back if they do.
12:48But, yeah, that is a good point.
12:50And then you also had a recommendation for how, what's best way to dry your hair.
12:55Can you talk about that?
12:56Right.
12:56So it is best not to use like a cotton towel because you don't want to, while your hair is wet, it's really pliable.
13:04And you don't want to break any of your hair strands or your ends, which are very important.
13:09So if, if at all possible, if you can just, you want to just, just damp, you know, how you can just do it with a towel and get the drips away.
13:19So it won't be dripping wet, but air drying is like the best thing that you can do because you're going to stay away from the hot heat.
13:28Appliances like blow drying or sitting under, even sitting under a dryer, you know, over time that is kind of, it's too hot for your scalp and your hair.
13:36It just, you know, wears on it after a while, but air drying is the best way, but not often can people do that.
13:43So maybe a low heat under the dryer, which would take a longer time, but I would say the best is just to air dry it.
13:52So good.
13:52So you guys are learning something new.
13:54I know I definitely am because I wasn't doing any of that.
13:58So thank you, Lakita.
14:00What's the next thing you want to highlight?
14:02And, okay, so after the shampoo bar, people were saying, you know, what else do you have?
14:07So I do have a conditioner, which I was in the process of making before I sent you those samples.
14:15And then the conditioner is a leave-in, rinse-out, and deep conditioner.
14:20So this one is a roots one that goes well with that roots ice bar that you have with the peppermint scent.
14:27And like I said, again, it's water-based.
14:31You can read all of the ingredients on here.
14:33You can actually eat these ingredients.
14:36Remember back in the day, that product that said you actually could eat it, but you might not want to taste of this peppermint in your mouth.
14:43But you can use it as a rinse-out.
14:46Like after you wash your hair, you put it in, leave it on for five minutes, or, you know, as you continue to wash if you're doing this in the shower,
14:52and then just rinse it out lightly, or you can leave it in as a leave-in styler.
14:57And I usually do my two-strand twist with it.
14:59So after I wash my hair, I put a little bit on my fingers and then do the two-strand twist with it and leave it in.
15:04And you see it's not heavy or anything because it's water-based.
15:08And also you can use it as a deep conditioner.
15:11After you wash your hair, you put it on, maybe mix a little bit of oil in it, cover it with your plastic bag or your plastic cap,
15:17leave it on for up to 20, 25 minutes, and then rinse it out.
15:21And then you have a deep conditioner.
15:23So again, it's multi-use.
15:25Everything is three-in-one.
15:27So that's the conditioner.
15:28And it's really thick.
15:30Let's see it.
15:31See that?
15:32See that?
15:33Trust that.
15:34Turn it upside down.
15:35It's not coming out or anything.
15:37So it's super thick, which people like because it gives you that nice slip for detangling.
15:42Oh, the slip is so important.
15:45Curly girls know.
15:48Exactly.
15:48That's what we're looking for.
15:49So that's why I formulate it in that way.
15:52And again, doing children's hair.
15:54Thank you to the kids because they help me.
15:56You know, sometimes they have some rough hair and even the little ones.
15:59So it really did help me with the formulation of the products.
16:02And then, of course, it works on adults.
16:05So good.
16:06So good.
16:07Ingredients so natural.
16:08You can eat it.
16:09Laxita is in the kitchen cooking up these incredible products.
16:12What's the next thing that you have to highlight?
16:15My next thing would be the oil.
16:18Now, I do make a concentrated version of this oil because people are into serums.
16:24Oh, you have it right there with the little squirt top applicator where you can concentrate on if you have any thinning spots or any particular dry spots.
16:34You can just put that in and use that applicator to just pinpoint spots.
16:39And then I have one for more of a maybe weekly use, which is a little bit larger.
16:44And it has the same ingredients in it.
16:46But the one that you have has more vitamin E, which is great.
16:50It looks like it has like real herbs in it.
16:53Right.
16:54And I add that in there as well.
16:56And that just gives you some extra, extra boost, extra nutrients in that one, which pinpoints the spots that you may have.
17:04And it comes in again, I try to keep all the scents natural.
17:07So it's lavender, peppermint and lemon, which is from lemongrass.
17:13And they all have the same ingredients in it, this bottle here.
17:18But I just put a little bit more for the scent.
17:21And again, the scent is natural.
17:22I love, and this one says apricot and avocado oil, vitamin E, candida, candida, candida, candida, candida, candida, candida, candida, candida.
17:45There you go.
17:46This is great.
17:46That is in the daisy family, the calendula.
17:51And that is good for dry scalp.
17:53The oil that you have also is good for people who have eczema.
17:57Now, there's no good for eczema, but it'll help with the flare-ups.
18:00One of my hair clients, she has eczema in her scalp.
18:03And I'll put a little bit of that on after I wash her hair and style it.
18:07And it helps just maybe calm the flare-ups.
18:10Not go away, but calm it.
18:12And she gets less flare-ups of that dry scalp from eczema.
18:16So it helps with that.
18:17And the aids in thinning hairline, listen, I've been on a long journey to get them.
18:23I had that one wrong lace front on and tried to rip it off.
18:27And I have been.
18:28It's been years, but we're working on it.
18:30I'm so glad to add this to my routine.
18:33If you're using it for thinning hairline, how often would you say that you should be using it?
18:38Now, I would say you would use it, like, after you wash your hair, while your hair is still damp, not dripping wet, you would put that.
18:47You can put it on your fingertips, or you can use that applicator to put it on and just kind of rub it in before you style your hair.
18:54And you can do that after you wash it.
18:56And I would say, at the least, maybe three times a week.
19:00Now, that is packed with vitamin E.
19:02And vitamin E is great for, you know, growing hair.
19:05That is what's in castor oil.
19:07You know, a lot of people use castor oil for growth.
19:10But, hey, go to the source.
19:11I put vitamin E in there, along with the other oils that all contain vitamin E.
19:16So, once you, most of the things are preventive, as well as you have to kind of use them regularly.
19:24You can't just use it one time, like, oh, my edges are growing back.
19:27But you have to incorporate that into your routine, and that would help, along with, you know, low-tension styles.
19:33Don't do those pull-back styles all the time.
19:36The wigs, you kind of give them a little break for your edges.
19:39But they definitely do help.
19:41They definitely do.
19:42So, so good.
19:43Now, you are not done.
19:45And we have a couple more products.
19:46But before we move on, you have a special code for anybody that is going to the website to search and let them know what is it.
19:53I'm shouting out to Shop Essence Live.
19:56I named the code after it.
19:58It is S-E-L-25.
20:01And when you type that in at checkout, S-E-L and the number 25, you'll get 25% off of your total purchase, no matter what you buy.
20:11Even if you buy something that's $5, you'll still get $25 off of it.
20:15So anything you put in your cart, $25 off.
20:1925% off, I should say.
20:2125% off of your whole entire cart.
20:24That is huge.
20:26I'm going right after this to get that condition up.
20:29That is so, so great.
20:31Thank you for that.
20:31So we have a couple more things to highlight.
20:34What's the next thing you want to talk about?
20:36And the next thing I want to talk about are my face products.
20:40Now, I was started off making hair products.
20:44And then people will write to me and say, oh, that shampoo bar, it does so well for my face.
20:50And I'm like, really?
20:51Did you put that on your face?
20:53And so I thought it was too drying.
20:55I ended up doing research and more testing on things that were good for our face and incorporated that within the shampoo bars.
21:07And now there are face bars.
21:09So I do have a line of face bars as well.
21:12And of course, following, and that's the one you have is the turmeric one.
21:16That sample size bar.
21:18You hear all about turmeric all over social media.
21:21Right.
21:21So it's a whole new thing.
21:23But, hey, people have been using turmeric for decades, the Egyptians.
21:28So it's new to us, but it's not new.
21:32But that one is the most popular one.
21:36And it does have honey, jojoba, tamenu, tea tree oil, lime, all things that does help fade dark spots, help keep your complexion clear, help with any potential breakouts.
21:52And you can also use it again.
21:54I have people who, you know, you have dark spots on our body.
21:57You can use it for your entire body as well.
21:59But once you start using the soaps for your body, you know, they're not going to last as long as they would if you just use it for what they're intended to be used for, like your face.
22:10The bar will last you for a good four or five months just using one bar.
22:14And it comes in that five ounce size as well.
22:17Oh, OK.
22:18That turmeric one is one of the best selling bars in the face line.
22:22And I also have two others, a healing and a herbal bar that will help with people who do have more breakouts or people who are suffering from eczema.
22:32This bar does help with that as well.
22:34It smells so good.
22:36What I love about this face bar, because I can understand, like, using the shampoo and body bars for your face, because you want to use the most gentle.
22:46And the face is just like the scent is a lot more subtle and just like fresh.
22:51It's not as like pungent as the other one.
22:53So I can see this working really well for the face.
22:58And again, that little bar, that point five ounce bar will last you a good month.
23:04Is that an every day if you use it every day?
23:06If you use it twice a day.
23:08So I use it like morning and then use it in the evening.
23:10It'll last for a month, probably over a month if you concentrate and just only using it on your face.
23:16If you start using it on your neck or your body, of course, it's not going to last that long.
23:20Yeah.
23:21But it's the sample lasting that long.
23:22You could imagine how much a five ounce bar, you know, how long.
23:26That's going in the cart.
23:28That is going in the cart.
23:30The five ounce bar.
23:31Don't forget, we're on with Bowbium Naturals.

23:53I have one more thing and I am obsessed with butters and your butter is just so incredible.
24:00Can you talk about this?
24:02Yes.
24:03Yes.
24:03Now, the shea butter was accidental again.
24:08Hey, these things, accidental, it's really interesting.
24:10My sister would come over, I would do her hair, and she would go through my product shipment.
24:17And she was like, hey, I found this oil in here.
24:20And I'm like, what oil?
24:21I ordered jars.
24:22It was a sample of essential oil, fragrance, I should say, a fragrance oil that was in one of my jar packages.
24:31And I came out of the kitchen and she had, it was all over the place.
24:34I was like, what is that smell?
24:36And she said, oh, I just got this.
24:37I was like, you can't put straight fragrance on your face.
24:41It needs to be mixed with a carrier oil or a butter.
24:43So I took that fragrance from her, the one you have in your hand that I call Metley, and I put it in the butter.
24:52And I didn't have jar.
24:53I didn't want to give away my good jar.
24:54So I gave her these tiny little sample jars.
24:57She took those things to school and she had to sit on.
25:01And people were like, what is that I wanted?
25:03And she was like, oh, $5.
25:04It was the tiniest sample.
25:06And she sold them for $5.
25:08Not even smaller than that one.
25:10And then she came back with this bag of money like, hey, I sold everything.
25:13I'm like, what did you take from my house to sell?
25:15It's like, oh, those little items I gave you?
25:17Are you serious?
25:19And long story short, I started jarring it.
25:22I put it on the website and people start loving that scent.
25:26Now that scent is the only one in the Shea Butter line that's not like a natural flower scent.
25:33It's a man-made scent, but again, it doesn't have any phthalates in it.
25:37It's a natural, you know, derived scent.
25:40So it is good for your body, your hair.
25:43I would say be careful about your face.
25:45Do a patch test first, although my sister puts it everywhere.
25:49Thanks to her.
25:50Hey, my mother and sister.
25:51Hey, they're my business people, huh?
25:54But definitely it was just done accidentally and people just took off.
26:00It took off.
26:01And I just whipped the Shea Butter.
26:02And there's only a four ingredients in there.
26:04There's just the Shea Butter.
26:05I put a little bit of almond oil and coconut oil or cocoa butter.
26:11And then the fragrance.
26:12And the fragrances, again, I stick with the same things.
26:15Peppermint, lavender, and lemongrass.
26:17And that Metley is just a special one for my sister.
26:21So I added that.
26:23First of all, you have such a beautiful community around you.
26:27Mom, shout out to mom and shout out to your sister.
26:30So great.
26:31And then speaking of community, you're also a part of the New Voices family community.
