You may have never heard of him, but Nadeem Raza is helping make your life a lot easier. He heads the company which makes sure the shirt or smartphone you ordered online arrives at your doorstep within hours of your click.
His business, Microlise, is the UK’s leading - and Europe’s third largest - supplier of technology for delivery vehicles. But this tech is much more than just tracking trucks. It’s ensuring they are following the right route, the speediest schedule and are not about to break down.
In an interview with Insider Raza talks about machine learning, climate change and why his software may know more about yourself than you do. The full interview is in the May edition of Insider.

00:00Hi, my name is Nadim Raza. I'm the CEO for Microlyse Group PLC. We're a £18 million
00:17business listed on the aid market in the London Stock Exchange and we provide solutions to large
00:25logistics companies to help them run their operations more effectively. So that's the
00:31likes of retailers like Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrison's, Asta, etc. As well as companies
00:37doing other forms of logistics like DHL, DPD and people in the pharmaceutical industry like Boots
00:47and AH and we help them deliver those goods in the most efficient way possible using
00:55all of their assets which could be tens of thousands of drivers, thousands of vehicles,
01:00thousands of traders and so on. As I mentioned earlier we've turned over about 80 million.
01:08We're growing at a rate of about 10 to 15 percent organically and we're really excited about what
01:16logistics sees in the future so that the industry is under enormous pressure to deliver more goods
01:26more quickly with less cost and less emissions and that's really about continuing to drive those
01:35efficiencies across the industry. And of course we're in a great place in the UK because we're a small
01:44island with a higher population and unfortunately poor roads so we have to be good at logistics
01:51but the international opportunities are really exciting and we're growing rapidly through our offices
02:00in Australia and France but we only see that as the tip of the iceberg. We're continuing to grow and
02:09expand our geographical footprint across Europe and of course in the near future into North America.
02:18So the other areas where we can use our technology is really to monitor remote assets.
02:25So wherever there is something that is remote or is mobile and you need to be able to get information
02:33from it to be able to look after that. So for example things like generators that are on remote sites,
02:43things like all sorts of different vehicles. We do a lot of things for the military for example in
02:49monitoring equipment that they have in different places, even things as simple as car park gates,
02:57monitoring how they're being used, whether they are continuing to work and whether they need any
03:02service or maintenance carrying out on those. So looking at all sorts of products whether it's
03:07turbines, generators or anything that's mobile that has an engine or some electronics on it that needs
03:16monitoring we can collect that data and turn that into information so that whoever is having to provide
03:24maintenance on that on that equipment can do that in a really effective way. So we're a high tech business
03:33we obviously write software and that's the major part of the business but we also design and produce
03:39hardware and of course we run our own data centers so we have the need for a wide variety of
03:46technical skills and it's skills that you don't just learn at university. So we bring in people, we
03:55train them, put them through boot camps and even if they've been here for 10 years we encourage
04:02lifelong learning to develop those skills because it's a major part of the requirements that we have
04:09as a business to continue to grow is really bringing on board all of those skills, keeping them up to date
04:16and obviously trying to encourage those people to stay with us for the long term.
