ESA's new Biomass probe to help combat deforestation from outer space

A space probe is preparing for launch into Earth's orbit this month to map the carbon content of tropical forests in some of the world's most remote areas. A new radar scanner will be attached to the Biomass space probe, and, after its planned launch on April 29, 2025 will orbit the earth for several years collecting data on the densest rainforests across Africa, Asia and South America. The scanner will use interferometry technology to gather data on carbon storage in the forests, with the goal to improve understanding of the carbon cycle flow and measure the effects of deforestation and climate change.

00:00There we go.
00:14There we go.
00:19I have experience there.
00:20I've got some of my experiences.
00:22I'm just seeing you.
00:24Hey, buddy.
00:25Oh, I'm just kidding.
00:26Oh.
00:27Oh.
00:28Oh.
00:29Oh.
00:30Oh.
00:31Oh.
00:32Oh.
00:33Oh.
00:34Oh.
00:35Oh.
00:36Oh.
00:37Oh.
00:38Oh.
00:39Oh.
00:40Oh.
00:41Oh.
00:42Oh.
00:43Oh.
00:44Oh.
00:45Oh.
00:46Oh.
00:47Oh.
00:48We care about the forest.
00:54The forest is the lung of our planet.
01:00And what we are particularly interested in is to get information on the flow of the carbon
01:06cycle flow.
01:07So what we want to measure is how much of the fossil fuel that is burned and produces CO2,
01:14how much of that goes into the forests and stays there and is captured.
01:19And we do several maps over the years in order to see the changes.
01:24That is the main goal of the mission.
01:26So let's see.
01:28In the moment, I will be looking back to the کی probe into the front.
01:36Like?
01:37Yeah.
01:38Oh, too.
01:39OK.
02:10First of all, they will improve the climate modeling, and that is needed to tackle the issue and the problem at all.
02:27So then they will be there to monitor also deforestation, what is cut, and we will also be able to assist and monitor many of these programs.
02:37For example, the United Nations has forestation programs, and they want to monitor very precisely what is growing, what these contributions are.
03:07When you fly with an optical instrument over the forest, you only see the leaves.
03:31What we are interested in is how much wood, you can also say how much carbon is stored there, and that is not an easy thing to do.
03:40You need to get the volume basically of the trees, and what we do, we have a radar instrument that can penetrate to the ground.
03:49We use a technology that is called interferometry, where we can also detect the height of the trees, and all that together helps us to estimate the volume and the weight basically of the wood in the forests.
04:07The forests are under the red.
04:35We need these data, and everybody also now knows and hears basically daily in the news, the threat of climate change to human mankind.
04:46So that all will provide data to combat, to provide information for politicians to take decisions, so it's absolutely timely to do it now.
05:05For example,
05:07what are some of the risk factors that can learn about this movement that will face gold and now
05:15are still knowing, what is theowego's
05:19The computerwith22 here枯 sweep.
05:21The computerwith22 here is for sunan koyu.
05:26For more than ever, there is if you may know,
05:29the platform comes across the top and have noapi.
05:33The deforestation that is ongoing in the Amazon and in the tropical forests is progressing
05:53at a huge pace and biomass is probably the most precise tool to measure that on a daily
06:03basis.
06:39Bye-bye.
06:41Bye-bye.
06:43Bye-bye.
06:49Ok.
