00:00My name is Ed Wardle.
00:07This is hard.
00:14I feel weak.
00:17I can't concentrate.
00:22I...
00:24I don't know what to say.
00:28What have I caught myself into?
00:35This is gonna be a pretty extraordinary adventure.
00:40What a strange feeling.
00:43Whoo!
00:45I'm alone in the wild.
00:50Everything you see from now on will be filmed by me.
00:55I came out here because I wanted to discover if I could do this.
00:59I want to do extraordinary things.
01:06Whoo!
01:09That's brilliant.
01:12Keep hearing things.
01:15I saw a bear, I saw a bear.
01:18Don't run, don't run, don't run, don't run, don't run.
01:30Anybody there?
01:32Like who the hell would it be out here?
01:37I promised that I would film even if I had nothing to say.
01:51I haven't had anything to say for a couple of days now.
02:03It's as if everything has stopped and all there is is silence.
02:10Silence.
02:13It's just silent here.
02:16I think without...
02:34Without any stimulus, I just...
02:38Maybe we just stop.
02:40There's something in the trees over there.
02:53Just heard something running.
02:55I have no idea what that was.
02:59The squirrel's just up there somewhere.
03:13But I think I heard the noise just over there.
03:20He's annoyed about something.
03:22Why is he making so much noise?
03:33There he is.
03:48I missed him.
03:50I missed him.
03:52I can't believe I missed him.
03:54There's just too many branches in the way.
03:59Now he's laughing at me.
04:05So...
04:06I've used up a bit more of my rations I'm afraid.
04:12I'm not sure how long I can survive in this location.
04:16There just doesn't seem to be quite as much wildlife,
04:19as much food as I expected there to be and as much as I need there to be.
04:26Whoa!
04:27Bloody hot.
04:28I've burnt my mouth again.
04:29Last night I caught a fish about the size of a sardine.
04:33and I ate that with two potatoes which look like sticks.
04:34I'm hungry.
04:35I'm hungry.
04:36I'm hungry.
04:37I'm hungry.
04:38I'm hungry.
04:39I'm hungry.
04:40I'm hungry.
04:41I'm hungry.
04:43I'm hungry.
04:44I'm hungry.
04:45I'm hungry.
04:46I'm hungry.
04:47I'm hungry.
04:52I'm hungry.
04:53I'm hungry.
04:54I'm hungry.
04:55I'm hungry.
04:56I'm hungry.
04:58I'm hungry.
04:59I'm hungry.
05:00I'm hungry.
05:01I'm hungry.
05:02I'm hungry.
05:03I'm hungry.
05:04I'm hungry.
05:05I'm hungry.
05:06I'm hungry.
05:07I'm hungry.
05:08I'm hungry.
05:09I'm hungry.
05:10I'm hungry.
05:11I'm hungry.
05:12I'm hungry.
05:13I'm hungry.
05:14I'm hungry.
05:15I'm hungry.
05:16I'm hungry.
05:17I'm hungry.
05:18I'm hungry.
05:19I'm hungry.
05:20in a row when I haven't caught anything and I don't know why. Rabbit runs still look like
05:29rabbit runs. This one wart. Nothing in it. I'm just not catching anything and if I don't
05:43catch anything then I go hungry so it's kind of depressing. Keep looking. Another snare, empty.
05:56There's one empty, two empty. No rabbits.
06:13My plan was always to bring enough food here so that by the time I ran out of supplies
06:36I would have learnt enough to live off the land completely. My supplies are going down faster
06:42than I expected. I'm not sure that there's enough here to keep me going and I think I need to
06:48think about moving. In fact I've decided that I'm going to move. I've got to pack up and
06:54I've got to find some other place maybe with a river or something. I've just got to find
07:02more food.
07:13So today's packing day and so I've got to pack everything up. I've got an emergency beacon,
07:20pot for boiling water, there's my backpack and my gun, an axe, boots and snares behind it. This
07:27is my camera gear, my fishing gear and there's a first aid kit, a little day bag and my shotgun.
07:37So all of this stuff has to fit into my rucksack. This is my rice and my oats. I think it probably
07:46weighs about four or five kilos but it's also going down pretty fast. I'm just going to walk
07:57off in that direction and hopefully it'll be a beautiful, tranquil Eden full of delicious food.
08:03This is my pack. It's pretty huge. I don't know if I can lift that.
08:28I'm not sure that I really want to go. I've built a shelter and I kind of know this place
08:40now but there just isn't enough food here and I'm hoping, hoping, hoping the salmon are
08:46going to start running up the river and maybe I can find them.
08:50Okay, this is it. Got my pack on, got my shotgun. In fact, I've got everything that I own and
09:00goodbye Dog Pack Lake. Here we go, to the north.
09:10This pack weighs a ridiculous amount and it feels pretty unstable. I'm probably going to hurt myself
09:16carrying this much weight. I'm just going to have to take it really slowly. Yeah, like that slow.
09:25I hate these thickness.
09:38Oh, look at that. Something really big slipped here.
09:54I don't know if you can see this. This patch of ground here is definitely where something slipped or lay down.
10:09All the grass is tramped down.
10:13It's bigger than me.
10:17Much bigger than me.
10:24I really don't want to bump into a bear.
10:37In the front of me, in the path that I'm following, there's a bear print.
10:40This is the claws one, two, three, five, front print one, two, three, four.
10:53A small bit there. And this is the heel here. Maybe that's the front and the hind feet.
10:58Or maybe it's really small and that would be bad. If there's a baby bear, then I'm in trouble.
11:05If I bump into a female bear and its cub, then she'll probably want to attack me to protect her cub.
11:21What can I do? I'm not just going to turn back.
11:24If I make a lot of noise, then maybe that'll just warn them that I'm coming and they'll clear out.
11:39Yo, bears!
11:44Hey, bears!
11:44Apparently, if I'm attacked by a bear, I've got to play dead. Lie down on the ground,
11:57cover the back of my neck with my hands and stay still.
12:06And hopefully that bear will go away. The trouble is, that's only a grizzly bear.
12:12If it's a black bear, which looks pretty much the same, then I have to fight for my life because
12:21the black bear won't give up. You'll just think, oh, now I'm going to eat him.
12:42I'm in pain. I'm in pain. This pack is too heavy.
12:49I'm at the top of a hill. Look at that. Look at that. I can see a lake.
13:12That's what I was after. A nice big lake just like that one. Isn't that amazing?
13:23Wow. I am right above a decent sized river too. Look down there.
13:35So, if I follow this river, I'll get to that big lake. That's where I'm going.
13:49I wasn't entirely sure I was in the right place at all.
13:53But finding this river means I am where I thought I was supposed to be.
13:57Okay. I'm at the river. That's a good site for a dry throat.
14:11I'm going to take a break.
14:26Usually at the end of a big hike, there'll be some people.
14:30Probably some food and drink and a big pat on the back and a, hey, good work.
14:39If I hear this, absolutely nothing. Nothing at all.
14:56Okay. It's just time seven o'clock at night.
15:16I just gotta stop.
15:26This is the first night I haven't used the electric bear fence.
15:33I put it up in my first camp on the first day and it just gave me some kind of sense of security.
15:40And I've been putting it up every night because I kind of thought,
15:43well, if I got attacked by a bear and I had a bear fence in my rucksack but I hadn't put it up,
15:49then I would look like a real idiot. But part of the reason for coming out here
15:57is to live in the wild.
15:59And if I start building fences around me then, then I don't feel like I'm really doing that.
16:09Well, Dog Pack Lake is here.
16:14My camp was there and I walked up here and then to this river.
16:20I reckon I'm just on the edge of the page here and I want to go to the top end of Tin Cup,
16:40up to Tin Cup Creek. So if I did that much yesterday, I've got one another two times,
16:48another two days to go. So I think my plan is that I'm gonna keep going down towards the lake
16:56and see if I can't just walk around the lake. I can't stay here.
17:12This is, this is nowhere. This is really nowhere.
17:18I gotta keep going.
17:26One bear this river is much the same as the next.
17:40I just want to get to the bottom of it.
17:42I can't quite believe it. I've made it to the lake. There's the lake. Yay! Hallelujah.
18:03I made it to the lake. I made it to the lake. I made it to the lake.
18:06That's awesome. What a place.
18:18This lake is as wide as the last lake was long. It's huge.
18:26I want to go to that top end of it, which I think is another five miles,
18:31and try and find the river that flows out of it. I want to follow that river and find the salmon.
18:36I miss paths. I miss paths and roads, bicycles, buses, trains, airplanes. I want them all back.
18:58But first, I got to do this.
19:06I think this dream has always been there for me that I wanted to come out into the wilderness and
19:12see if I can survive, see if I can live off the wild.
19:16I can't live my life just sitting around dreaming about things. I want to lead an extraordinary life.
19:26And that means doing extraordinary things. And I think this is probably an extraordinary thing.
19:31thing. My feet are soaking. I got blisters. The skin has rubbed off my hips with the weight of
19:42this rucksack. My shoulders ache. My legs ache. But I'm having a good time.
19:48And yeah, I'm all right. Really?
20:02That's much better. I put my hammock up in the trees way up there. It's a really nice view.
20:08I've got my fire going. I've got some water on. I just got to go for a swim. I smell like a horse.
20:26I caught a fish. I caught a fish. Would you believe it? It's just the one thing that I really wanted.
20:42And I've almost done it. Please don't come off. Please don't come off.
20:46Yes. Wow. Look at that for a fish. Hey, I got a fishy. That's dinner. Oh, shit.
21:04It might not look much to you, but that's pretty good for me. It just makes the difference. It makes
21:10everything all right. It makes it all worth it. And so now I'm beside a beautiful lake in a
21:16amazing forest with a campfire and some food. And this is it. This is my dream. This is what I
21:26thought it was going to be. Morning. It's day three of my journey.
21:46Morning. I ache all over.
22:00I would like some coffee. Poached eggs, please.
22:07On toast. Hot toast with butter. And a glass of rice orange juice, please.
22:20And a steak. And two fried eggs. Look at the house browns. And a sausage.
22:27A Cumberland sausage.
22:42This is still pretty rough going.
22:44It's still pretty rough going.
22:46Only five miles of this. It's going to completely exhaust me.
22:51There's never any let up here. There are no breaks. No help. There's never any help here.
23:12I keep thinking, you know, if I push on, I'll push on and then I'll get there. But there is no there. It's just another place like this.
23:27There are no breaks. There are no breaks. There's no help. And I desperately, I desperately want some help.
23:38Get up.
23:51No, I've got to get down there. Jesus. I can't believe this place.
24:01Ah God.
24:07This is it. This is what it's like here. It's too steep to climb up, straight down to the
24:20lake shore and into the water. And the whole place is filled with broken trees that I can't
24:25climb over. I would call this impenetrable.
24:29If I was given even the slightest opportunity to give up now, I would give up. If I had
24:46a fucking phone. If my phone rang right now and they said, oh, are you okay? Do you want
24:54to give up? I'd say, yeah, come and get me. I want to go home. This is shit. This is
25:03the worst shit I've ever done. This is fucking horrible.
25:16Every 10 paces or so, I wonder if I'm going to break my leg.
25:21And half of me wishes that I would, then I could, then I could call it a day. I could
25:31just give up and go home.
25:38And then in the water, which is really bad news.
25:46Fuck.
25:52Fuck.
26:07Fuck.
26:08Fuck.
26:08Fuck.
26:13Fuck.
26:18Fuck.
26:19Well, this is it, this is Tin Cup Lake, it's a beautiful morning, I want to get up, get
26:44on with the day, I mean look at that, what more could you want, that's amazing, this has
26:52got to be freedom, isn't it, to get up in the morning and for the place to look like this,
26:57this is just beautiful, I love this, this is what it's for, this has got to be what it's
27:08about.
27:38I hadn't imagined how important having a shelter was before and I thought shelters were
27:45all about keeping you dry and things, but they're not, shelters are about a home, they
27:51really are.
27:53It doesn't matter where it is really, but it really matters that I've got this seat and
28:01a fire and a place to hang my kettle and so I'm really glad that I've pulled myself together
28:08a bit and did this thing today.
28:12One thing I've got to do before I finish for the day is get my food up a tree.
28:32The last few days I haven't had the energy for climbing trees, but with the food on the
28:37ground it's vulnerable to bears.
28:51Well, that was close.
28:55I almost lost my head there.
28:58The pole that I took up there and strapped on to winch my food up seems to be rotten and
29:04it snapped and fell down and just missed me.
29:08Okay.
29:13I seem to have managed to damage myself every day somehow.
29:22There's nothing serious but...
29:26Jesus!
29:27I'm putting on betadine antiseptic paint to kill her!
29:43I mean, they're a mess.
29:44You wouldn't get away with hands like that in London.
29:50I need a manicure.
29:57I just want to get my snares out.
30:15I'm pretty excited about it.
30:28This is kind of spooky in here.
30:36There, I can hear it.
30:43There's definitely something in the woods up there.
30:45There.
31:03I just want to get out of here.
31:04I'm leaving the camera running because strangely it gives me some kind of sense of security.
31:23I don't know what it is about this bit of the forest, but it scares me a bit.
31:28I don't know what it is.
31:32I don't know what it is.
31:40Hello?
31:42Hello?
31:45Hello?
31:58Hello?
32:12Look at all these.
32:16This is just too good to miss.
32:18These are called bear berries.
32:22And they're all over the ground here.
32:24It's the first real patch of berries I've seen.
32:30I found berries which is brilliant.
32:33But I need meat.
32:35I need fish or a game.
32:37And I can't find any.
32:39And that's really worrying me.
32:45This place is really beautiful.
32:47Miles and miles and miles and miles of endless forest and huge lakes and massive mountains.
32:57And it's awesome.
32:59It's awesome in the true sense of the word.
33:01But I guess I'll always come back to the fact that I don't have enough food to eat.
33:15And I'm not sure what I'm going to do about it.
33:17I've still got some rice and some oatmeal left.
33:28Which I'm rationing.
33:29I have a really small amount each day.
33:32Just to keep me going.
33:33Just imagine you're going to get up tomorrow and there's going to be no more food.
33:47What would you do?
33:48What would you do?
34:02So.
34:04This is the river.
34:06The mouth of the river.
34:09Where the lake's coming out.
34:11And pouring down the hill there.
34:13And this river I reckon is probably big enough for salmon.
34:18So tonight I've come down the river.
34:26About two miles.
34:28To try and find some fish.
34:30I can't seem to catch any fish in the lake.
34:33And there must be fish in this river.
34:36So tonight's really important.
34:38I've got to catch a fish in here.
34:40Because I haven't found any meat.
34:42Or any fish so far.
34:48So I walked about five miles today.
34:49Down the river to see what was there.
34:50Just to see what kind of fish I could catch.
34:51And if there are any salmon.
34:52There definitely aren't any salmon.
34:53But I did catch three fish.
34:54This is the first one.
34:55This is the second.
34:56And this is the third.
34:57That is the smallest fish I have ever caught in my life.
35:00And it's not even funny.
35:01That's my dinner.
35:02Three of the tiniest fish.
35:03And they're all smaller than I've ever caught in my life.
35:07And it's not even funny.
35:08That's my dinner.
35:09Three of the tiniest fish.
35:10And they're all smaller than my finger.
35:41There are fewer and fewer leaves around nowadays and they're all becoming a bit wilted.
36:03When these leaves disappear I'm not sure what I'm going to eat, this is pretty much what
36:07I eat every day now. There's a big big handful of leaves and I boil them up. I usually add
36:15a bit of rice. I'm kind of fed up eating vegetables. I was hoping by now that I would be a lot better
36:24at catching food but it seems to be kind of the same you know if there aren't any animals
36:30around then. I'm not sure what I'm going to do.
36:40Well, it's the 1st of August. Yay! The 1st of August! The 1st of August! I've done a whole
36:49month out in the wild completely on my own.
36:58Nothing much else to say. Can I go home now? Take me home! Come and get me! I'm ready!
37:05I've had enough now!
37:07Shit!
37:09Well, I was just saying this morning how lucky I was that it hadn't rained in weeks but it
37:23looks like this is going to be a big one. A big old rain storm and it looks like my fire is about to go out.
37:31And my shelter is completely useless because the rain is coming from that direction and it's going straight into my shelter.
37:38I think dinner is cancelled for the night and I've got to go and get in my hammock. That's it.
37:50I can't see, I can't see the other shore of the lake now. It's just grey.
37:57I've got mud all over my feet. Some days. It's fine getting wet if you've got a house
38:13to go in afterwards. Get changed, get warm, put on new clothes and keep dry but
38:19out here I've got to be much more careful. Look at the rain coming off there and that's just coming
38:29off the six feet squared of tarpaulin that I've got with me and I'm under two big, two big trees.
38:39Ah, some of the rain is coming through. It's all a bit loose in here. And in the loose bits,
38:46the water's coming through. I'm getting a bit wet.
38:54I was really stupid. I didn't get ready. I watched the storm coming instead of
38:59flattening down the high tiers and tightening the tarpaulin and getting everything indoors.
39:04I just stood there and watched the storm coming and got excited about it. I'm so stupid sometimes.
39:16Well, it's been raining for three days now. I checked the river yesterday. There are no salmon
39:27in the river yet. That's the main reason I came here. I guess it is possible that there won't be
39:34any salmon. But how long do I give it before I run out of my supplies and then I'm not strong enough to go
39:46anywhere else. I've got about three weeks of rations left of rice and of oatmeal.
39:53So I reckon if I give it another week at least here waiting for salmon and then if there's still
40:05no salmon then I'm gonna have to move again because there's less food here than there was at the last
40:10place.
40:24I took my pulse my heart rate last night and it's down in the high 20s. Normally at home it would be up in
40:48the high 40s and so now my heart's beating about 30 beats per minute. I think it means that my
40:56metabolism has slowed right down because I'm not getting enough food but that also means that I
41:02get cold very easily. I'm cold at night now. I thought it was just the weather but I'm pretty
41:08sure it's because I'm not getting enough food. So things are beginning to get serious now.
41:25No fish again.
41:44Just one, just one rabbit.
41:55Nothing in the first one.
42:10Nothing in the second.
42:16It's not been touched.
42:17Nothing in the third.
42:34I can't concentrate at the moment.
42:40I can't focus on one thought.
42:41Like now I can't remember what.
42:50I'm not sure if this is to do with hunger or to do with being alone.
42:58Right now I'm in this sort of silent
43:04numbness. I can't go anywhere with my thoughts.
43:07I don't know what's next.
43:18This is a lot harder than I thought.
43:23I've lost an incredible amount of weight.
43:28I think I've probably lost about two stone.
43:35I'm not normally like this. I don't look like this.
43:39I'm a lot thinner than
43:43when I started.
43:46My legs are very thin
43:49and the muscle is very soft. I don't have much strength.
43:53I've realized over the last couple of days that I'm not, uh, I'm not doing as well as I
44:02was kind of pretending to myself that I'm doing.
44:08I haven't managed to film very much.
44:11Carrying the camera equipment around, it seems to be a huge effort.
44:16I can't think straight a lot of the time.
44:25I try and sleep a lot and I try and stay warm.
44:27It's very upsetting watching myself deteriorate like this.
44:41I don't know.
44:42I'm not trying to sleep.
44:43I try and sleep.
44:46Ahhhhhhh!
44:53Ahhhhhhh!
44:53No!
45:18So I've decided this morning,
45:23that I can't keep going like this.
45:38I still want to try and get to the end,
45:40but I can't do it without food,
45:43especially making the films as well.
45:46I can't carry on filming like this.
45:53So I'm going to start eating my rations.
45:56This isn't a place to be weak.
45:59I think you have to be strong to be out here,
46:02and if you're weak out here,
46:03then you're in trouble.
46:05But that's it for now.
46:08I'm taking myself off rationing.
46:12I'll take off.
46:22I'll take off the entire pack,
46:25I'll take off.
46:26I'll take off.
46:27Ah, things are going from bad to worse. I can't get myself motivated anymore.
46:44I can't even talk on camera anymore without crying.
46:53I must look like a sniveling idiot.
46:57I want to carry on and get this thing done, but...
47:07I'm not sure how.
47:13I'm a bit afraid of this next bit of the journey.
47:16I don't know how hard it's going to be.
47:21I miss people too much.
47:23I'll be strong if I can just start catching salmon.
47:27Look at that bad boy.
47:30Really good.
47:31Maybe I can survive in the wild now.
