00:00House Committee on Information and Communications Technology Vice-Chair, Johnny Pimentel,
00:05asked the public to pay attention to the information that is being read online,
00:11especially now that the 2025 election is approaching.
00:15In the continuation of the House Tri-Committee hearing,
00:18Pimentel insisted that the spread of fake news, disinformation, and misinformation during the election is getting worse.
00:25That is why they decided to form a new police force to address this issue
00:30while still taking care of the freedom of expression of Filipinos.
00:35One of the faces of the hearing today are the officials of META,
00:40which is held by the social media platform Facebook.
00:44When META asked for permission, they also asked our authorities
00:49to investigate the spread of misinformation online.
00:56We have a three-pronged approach to how we treat misinformation.
01:00Number one, we remove the most harmful misinformation that can lead to offline physical violence.
01:07Number two, we reduce the distribution of misinformation
01:15if it is found to be false by one of our third-party fact-checkers.
01:21And then we will reduce that misinformation on our platforms
01:26so that people are less likely to engage with it.
01:29And number three is we seek to inform.
01:32If people have engaged with misinformation on our platforms,
01:35we want them to be informed that they have indeed done so.
01:39It is saddening to think that in spreading misinformation,
01:44not only the people they are harming are affected,
01:48but also our country.
01:51We should be vigilant.
01:53Let us not be careless and reckless
01:56in fighting such misdeeds.
02:00Together, we can confront the challenges posed by fake news and disinformation,
02:05ensuring a healthier public discourse.
