00:00Tomorrow, we will celebrate the Day of Valor to look back on our history and to pay tribute to the bravery of our Armed Forces.
00:11That's why this morning, we will discuss the upcoming Day of Valor with Major Lawrence DeCastro and First Lieutenant Ley Vannet Alangui from the Philippine Air Force.
00:21Good morning to you all.
00:22Sir, good morning.
00:23Welcome to Rise and Shine Philippines.
00:25Good morning, sirs.
00:27First of all, for you, what is the meaning of the Day of Valor?
00:34Sir, the Day of Valor is the day we pay tribute to our heroes who sacrificed for the freedom that we are enjoying now.
00:51That is the Day of Valor, sir.
00:53Why is it important that we repeat this every year?
00:57Of course, it's important that we use this to remind us, not only for our uniform service,
01:05but also to inspire our Filipino people that heroism and bravery is in the small acts that we do, that we choose every day.
01:14That's it, sir.
01:16Now, let's talk about the Day of Valor.
01:18Tell us, how did you start being a soldier?
01:21Is it something that you dream of, with your family?
01:25Did you really plan to join the Air Force when you were young?
01:30Sir, for me, my father is also a military man.
01:34So, I was inspired by his activities and I followed him to become a military officer.
01:45Lieutenant?
01:46So, actually, I was a registered nurse first before becoming a pilot.
01:52But then, in college, I joined ROTC.
01:55And then, I was inspired that this is actually something that I'm good at.
01:59And it's something that I can excel and something that I do.
02:03And, of course, as a woman, personally, I was really challenged.
02:08I said, I can do this.
02:09So, I did it.
02:10That's why I'm here.
02:11So, you accessed it.
02:12I accessed it.
02:13But, ma'am, you look like a beauty queen.
02:15It looks like you have a beauty pageant background.
02:17Can you tell us the most unforgettable experience in your search for your duty?
02:25I'll go first.
02:28Sir, there were experiences during combat that we were facing enemies.
02:37Dangerous.
02:37Dangerous.
02:38My experience, sir, is that my helicopter was also hit by enemy bullets.
02:47Mid-air, sir?
02:48It was mid-air, sir.
02:49So, while airborne, I was hit by bullets.
02:53But, that was the dangerous experience that I experienced.
02:56But, I was still safe.
02:57I was able to go home by myself, my helicopter, my co-pilot, and the crew safely.
03:04So, it was a bit heavy.
03:07You were nervous, right?
03:08I was very nervous.
03:09But, I did it, sir.
03:12How about you, Elena?
03:13So, for me, it would be both in the civilian and military.
03:21In pilot training, we have what we call the solo flight.
03:24So, it's your first flight.
03:26You're really alone.
03:27There's no instructor.
03:27You're alone in the aircraft.
03:29So, all the responsibility and all the control is with you.
03:33So, for me, that's the first thing.
03:35I'm alone.
03:36I'm the only one who's responsible for flying.
03:39No one will blame me if I make a mistake.
03:41You know, a lot of people laugh at your own thoughts.
03:45So, you need to land the aircraft safely.
03:48So, that marks your first milestone being a pilot.
03:53That you can land the aircraft safely.
03:55Like a baptism of fire.
03:57But, are you still nervous until now?
03:59Of course, it's the nervousness factor that makes us brave, actually, for me.
04:05It's what pushes us to do better.
04:08It's our fear that pushes us to be brave.
04:12So, in every mission and every flight, of course, we do our best to be safe.
04:17But, of course, we still need to do everything to be safe when we land.
04:22Anything is possible.
04:23So, their execution needs to be perfect.
04:26There's no room for mistake.
04:29Now that we're talking about the Day of Judgment,
04:31as a part of the Philippine Air Force,
04:33how does the Philippine Air Force ensure that the Day of Judgment will be a part of our lives?
04:41So, for the Air Force,
04:43there are actually activities that we do to commemorate the Day of Judgment.
04:47Specifically, of course,
04:49we have Pagtatangasan sa Kapas.
04:53We also have Libingan ng Mga Bayani.
04:57But, of course, for the Air Force, it goes beyond just this day.
05:01It's not a one-day occasion.
05:03So, pagiging brave or pagiging valor is an everyday occurrence that you have to choose to do.
05:11To do the right thing always.
05:13Hindi lang siya pang isang araw lang.
05:15Again, baka may iba pang activities na magaganap para sa Araw ng Kagitingan?
05:19Yes, sir. Meron pa po sa Mount Samad sa Bataan,
05:23Kapas Tarlac, and sa Libingan ng Mga Bayani
05:25to celebrate yung Araw ng Kagitingan.
05:29Yearly naman yan sa Libingan ng Mga Bayani.
05:31Sir, with that, ano po yung mensahe natin sa publiko?
05:35Sabi niyo, ma'am, this is a reminder
05:37kung ano man yung kalayaan, freedom na tinatamasa natin
05:40is because of what happened then, Araw ng Kagitingan,
05:43na gusto nating baunin ng mga tao.
05:50Yes, sir.
05:51Sir, katulad nung nasabi kanina,
05:53Sir, katulad nung nasabi kanina,
05:55na yung Araw ng Kagitingan or yung heroism
05:59is hindi lang naman kung ano yung nakaraan.
06:03Sa ating paraan po, sir, is we can be heroes on our own way.
06:07So, pagiging disiplinado, maging tapat kasabayan,
06:11mga ganung bagay, is yun lang po ang mga paraan natin.
06:14Hindi lang para sa mga bata,
06:16pero pwede applicable din po sa atin, sa mga age po natin,
06:20na maging we can be heroes on our own way.
06:24So, actually, like I said,
06:27siguro kasi you look at sa amin ni sir,
06:31is naka-uniform kami, so parang anon yung given na yung ano,
06:34pero it goes beyond wearing a uniform
06:37to have the valor and the bravery and heroism.
06:40Kasi kaya nga nang sabi ni sir,
06:42it's about also yung honoring your sacrifices,
06:49pero hindi lang sa mga sundalo.
06:52Even just the simple sacrifices na ginagawa ng mga mamayang Pilipino po
06:55para sa ikabubuti ng Pilipinas.
06:58Pagmamahal sa bansa.
07:00And there are many forms of heroism.
07:02Yes, exactly.
07:03Again, maraming salamat po sa pagkuwento sa amin ng inspirational story niyo.
07:06Nakapalayan po natin si Major Lawrence de Castro
07:09and First Lieutenant Lea Vanette Alamgee
07:12mula sa Philippine Air Force.
07:13Mabuhay po kayo, sir.
07:15Thank you, sir. Good morning.
