00:00Welcome to the jaw-dropping landscape of Eredi, Snowdonia.
00:09The six remaining applicants are taking part in a unique selection process,
00:14hoping to secure the 15-year tenancy
00:17of the National Trust's most nature-rich farm in Wales.
00:21Hold on.
00:23The 600 acres comes with a four-bedroom farmhouse surrounded by mountains.
00:29This could be ours.
00:30If we're lucky, yeah.
00:32Access to its own lake...
00:36..and accommodation, all providing lucrative tourism opportunities.
00:42The hopefuls have all been proving themselves
00:44by living and working here for a week now,
00:47whilst being tested on the skills they'll need
00:50to make a success of this place.
00:53Well done, Greg.
00:54A farm like this is so hard to come by,
00:57and for someone, it's going to be life-changing.
01:00With such high stakes...
01:02Good girl.
01:03..every step is assessed by Giles Hunt
01:05and Tristan Edwards from the National Trust.
01:09Anybody who wants this farm is going to have to be on their best game.
01:17So far, farming couples Ryan and Laurie...
01:20Oh, gosh, Ryan's got one on his shoulder.
01:22..Sara and Eoin...
01:24Sara's a workhorse.
01:26Yeah, aren't she?
01:27Look at Abi!
01:28..and Lloyd and Abigail have all impressed Giles and Tristan...
01:31You've really shone out today.
01:33..earning the right to stay in the farmhouse...
01:36Are you quite excited?
01:37Yeah.
01:38I need some.
01:39Me too.
01:40..and become temporary farm managers.
01:43Poultry and pig farmer Greg and Liberty,
01:46who works in farming and tourism, are yet to win that opportunity.
01:51The income from that allows me to become the farmer I want to be.
01:54Yesterday, they all pitched their business plans.
01:57Our vision for the farm is 100 sheep and 15 head of cattle.
02:02And Will, along with his mum Emma, were the first to leave.
02:06You've done very well.
02:07While builder George excelled and became the latest farm manager.
02:11Thank you very much.
02:12But that's only temporary, as the potentials continue to be whittled down.
02:18For one of our applicants, their dream farm is going to become a reality.
02:37George has now had his first night as temporary farm manager.
02:41Let's see how George's time in the farmhouse has been.
02:44KNOCKING
02:46Morning.
02:47How are you going?
02:48Cup of tea?
02:49Oh, yes, that would be amazing.
02:51Pick it, Daddy.
02:53Alongside his wife Laura, who's at home in Essex with their children...
02:56Look at this one.
02:57Let me do it.
02:58..George dreams of moving his family to this farm.
03:01I've got some stuff.
03:03I'm currently project manager on a massive construction site.
03:07Construction's all about solving problems,
03:09and I feel like farming's, although it's completely different,
03:12it's very similar.
03:14I miss the hands-on stuff.
03:16I think the farming life will take over from that.
03:18I think it's like a step forward.
03:24This is some doorstep, this.
03:26It's somehow.
03:27It's just epic.
03:28It's how the clouds change.
03:29I sat here last night in the pitch black and watched all the stars,
03:32and that was just...
03:34It was very difficult to give the key back.
03:36You said to me, didn't you, after your business plan chat,
03:39that you wanted them now to really take you seriously.
03:42Yeah, I don't know. It could be me now.
03:46Thinking of it from a dad's perspective, you know,
03:48you want the best for your kids, don't you?
03:50Yeah.
03:51I mean, look at that.
03:52You can't answer it any more.
03:57To choose their new tenant,
03:58Giles and Tristan want to see how the applicants cope
04:01with the realities of the ups and downs of life on this farm.
04:05How they deal with working with the farm's Welsh black cattle.
04:09And laying hens.
04:11Managing the resident Welsh mountain sheep.
04:14And caring for the flock of dorset ewes brought here
04:17to test their lambing skills as they've saved and lost lambs.
04:24The first unsuccessful applicant has already left,
04:27and tomorrow will be saying goodbye to another.
04:30But as the sun lights up the valley,
04:32there's welcome news of some arrivals.
04:36A lot of you have pigs in your vision for this place,
04:40and so by this afternoon we'll have a sow and nine piglets
04:45on the farm.
04:47I know. I know, Laurie. I know.
04:51You're excited about that, aren't you?
04:53Yeah.
04:54I dropped the gun there. Sorry.
04:57And Giles and Tristan are keen to see how the applicants
05:00work together to get this place pig-ready.
05:03How are they with walls?
05:05Walls, they're fine.
05:06Greg, are you going to be the sow?
05:08Yeah, I'd love to.
05:09You've got experience with pigs, so you know.
05:11Absolutely. Yeah, I'd love to.
05:12Although George is temporary farm manager,
05:14they've decided they should make use of Greg's pig knowledge.
05:18With pigs, they'll try and burrow underneath the mesh.
05:21So it's just a case of ensuring that we've got no high points.
05:25That's all.
05:26Think like a pig.
05:27Think like a pig.
05:29This should be interesting.
05:31OK, let's do it.
05:32Let's do it.
05:33It's going to be fun today.
05:34This is a pure street, isn't it?
05:36Yeah.
05:37As well as pigs, Greg farms sheep and poultry
05:40with his family in Cheshire.
05:43So he's hoping today's task will allow him to shine.
05:48Pigs are coming. I mean, that's music to my ears.
05:51We've got pigs at home, the pigs are in the business plan.
05:54What was it that we said we needed? About 40?
05:5625 of these.
05:5725.
05:58So that's 20.
05:59I think anybody who has never had pigs,
06:02they're going to instantly fall in love when they see them.
06:05They've just got that way about them, pigs.
06:07There you go, my strong man.
06:09George wants to build a two-storey pig home with orangery...
06:13Yeah, car park basement and running hot, cold water, jacuzzi.
06:18Whoever's done it now will see what we do this evening.
06:20Absolutely.
06:21Right, let's come and jam in.
06:24The pigs' new home will be in part of the rushy pasture
06:27in front of the farmhouse.
06:29The applicants need to build an enclosure with some sturdy fencing
06:33to keep the sow and piglets in.
06:38As well as a pig ark for shelter.
06:40How's it going from that stream over there?
06:43OK, so if we go from this post,
06:45you don't need to put a corner one in.
06:47Yeah.
06:48We'll stream from that.
06:50Post here, put the gate here, just so it's easy access.
06:53Yeah. OK.
06:57Try that, yeah?
06:58We'll try and get it straight, yeah.
07:00Straight.
07:02Hopeful tenant Ewan is having to work alone today...
07:07..as it's one of the busiest times of year
07:09for his partner, Sarah, a sheep technician.
07:13I do a bit of fencing at home.
07:15I'm good with my hands and I can do it.
07:18Because it's quite a hands-on job, isn't it?
07:22I haven't got pigs. Not in my business plan.
07:24We didn't thought of it, really.
07:26We just stick to simple beef and sheep.
07:28We might get chickens, but I haven't got chickens in the business plan either.
07:38Oh! It's gone in quite far.
07:40It's fine. Yeah?
07:42We may as well start the other gate ones as well, then.
07:44I'll put everything flat on the floor for them.
07:46Yeah, perfect.
07:48So, we need a really nice straight line for our fence line.
07:52Very much perfectionist when it comes to building.
07:54My wife always says I spend probably twice as much time as I need to on it,
07:58just getting it just right.
08:00When you do anything, you do it as best as you can.
08:02It's not just any fence, it's our fence.
08:04Do you know what the breed's going to be?
08:06Yeah. Secret? Welsh.
08:08Pure breed. Of course, Welsh.
08:10Come on, Greg. Fantastic.
08:12Bring it on. Bring it on.
08:14Bring it on.
08:20Like this?
08:24With the build left in Greg's capable hands,
08:26sheep farmers Ryan and Laurie have volunteered to head off down the valley
08:30to collect the farm's newest residents.
08:32And as Tristan's keen to see how they get on, we're going too.
08:38I imagine Ryan will be loving this.
08:41Arm out. Elbow out.
08:43On a mission to fetch pigs.
08:45This is the life he wants. Yeah.
08:47They're doing really well, them two, aren't they?
08:49They are. Laurie is so infectious, isn't she?
08:52Outlook on life is always just happiness. Lovely.
08:55Yeah.
08:57I'm looking forward to it, to look at the pigs.
09:04Hello. Hello.
09:06How are you?
09:08We've come for some pigs.
09:10I need your help to get them all on the trailer.
09:13The girls are going to help me count.
09:15Oh, brilliant. Lead the way.
09:17Yeah? Shall I dance with them?
09:19We're not sure how this is going to go.
09:21OK, yeah.
09:23It could be a five-minute job, it could be an hour's job.
09:26Well, this should be fun.
09:28This feels like such a family-orientated activity.
09:32It's obviously quite emotional.
09:34The pigs mean so much to them.
09:37Oh, wow.
09:39Well, you live in a good place.
09:43OK.
09:46Rhys and his family keep a small herd of pedigree Welsh pigs
09:50here in the Conwy Valley.
09:57Oh, dear.
09:59Oh, dear.
10:01How many are there?
10:03Nine, I think.
10:06HE SPEAKS WELSH
10:17Back on the farm, with pig arrival hopefully imminent,
10:21the other potential tenants are preparing the pig pen.
10:24You tell me straight.
10:26Eoin, Greg, George and Liberty are working on the enclosure
10:29and Abi and Lloyd are tackling the assembly of the pig ark.
10:33It's quite simple how it goes together.
10:36I reckon this first bit will be easier on the flat babs.
10:39We don't currently have a flat to go on, do we?
10:42Well, I'd go to the...
10:44You want to go down there?
10:46We're in charge of building the pig ark
10:48because you never quite know how a flat pack is going to go.
10:51Yeah. Abi?
10:53Yep?
10:55You?
10:57Have you any idea how to square something up without a tape measure?
11:01Just use whatever is a frame, put the hoop over the top
11:04and then you'll get a feeling for square.
11:06Abi and Lloyd have called in reinforcements
11:09and Giles is checking on the progress.
11:12Have you built a pig ark before?
11:14Never. No.
11:16No? But we have enlisted the hand of a carpenter.
11:19Well, I look forward to seeing the completed pig ark.
11:22Well, so do we, Giles.
11:25Back down the valley...
11:27Have they got mixed up there, Rhys?
11:29Ryan and Laurie are facing some challenges.
11:32In the process of herding the new pigs out of their pen,
11:36three cheeky piglets have ended up in another sow's paddock.
11:40Oh, gosh, there's one through.
11:42According to pig farmer Rhys, there's only one way to get them out.
11:46We're going to have to catch them.
11:49Oh, I know.
11:57The tenancy applicants are getting the farm
12:00that they hope to call home for the next 15 years
12:03ready to welcome new arrivals, pigs.
12:06You need to go up again now.
12:08Oh, I'm sorry.
12:10You need to go up again.
12:12Oh, I'm sorry.
12:14I'm sorry.
12:16You need to go up again now.
12:18We can just roll it out now.
12:20The National Trust have set the task to observe their skills
12:24with fencing, building and livestock handling.
12:27Good job.
12:29Done this before, then, Liberty?
12:31Yeah, we just put down about 100 metres of stock fencing.
12:35It was 60 years old and it was perfectly intact.
12:38You are a dab hand at this.
12:40Well, I don't know about a dab hand, Giles.
12:42Bit of work left, isn't there?
12:44Yeah, the pigs are on their way, yeah.
12:46They are? Yeah.
12:48Down the valley, Ryan and Laurie are picking them up.
12:53Although they're experienced sheep farmers,
12:55they're new to caring for pigs.
12:58And Truston's watching on as three cheeky piglets
13:01have escaped into the next door pen.
13:04Oh, look who's there.
13:06We're going home, then.
13:08Oh, my darling.
13:10It's a good old darling.
13:13Oh!
13:14Good catch, Ryan.
13:18Goalkeeper them again.
13:22That was very challenging, yeah.
13:24They don't like sheep.
13:26I just figured that out.
13:28It's been really fun.
13:30Learning curve, isn't it?
13:31Massive learning curve, isn't it, for us?
13:33Cos we've not dealt with pigs before.
13:35No.
13:36Well done, you two. Good job.
13:39Are you discussing us?
13:41I promise we'll look after them for you.
13:43Be really excited to keep them, pig.
13:45They bring a bit more sort of...
13:47They've got this strut sort of thing.
13:49They're quite cool, yeah.
13:50I'm looking forward to it. Yeah.
13:55Are the others going to be ready for them?
13:57They'd better have been,
13:58cos we've got a sour nine piglets coming in.
14:04With the pigs on their way, back on the farm,
14:07the pig ark is still under construction.
14:11It's not hard and fast, is it?
14:13It's not me not following the instructions.
14:15No.
14:16Right, so we've learnt loads from reading that.
14:18Yeah, loads.
14:19Let's give that some of that.
14:22Basically, we just put these on.
14:24Fun, I think.
14:25Cos it took a lot longer than the half an hour
14:28that the instructions promised.
14:30Like, a lot longer.
14:32I think it's going together actually really quite nicely.
14:35I think it's going to look great.
14:37The more work you give, naturally,
14:39the more and more you want it.
14:41It's like you're doing it for yourself on your own farm.
14:44Who measured the gate hole?
14:46That's OK.
14:47Is it on the large side?
14:49Yeah.
14:50We'll have to improvise.
14:52We've got a full fist.
14:53Yeah, full fist.
14:54So when they put the posts in, I was a long way away.
14:57OK, let's get it hung and we'll...
14:59You know where you're going?
15:00We'll pop another post in if needs be.
15:04Oh, look at that.
15:05Perfect, well done.
15:07They're pretty much done.
15:08George is putting the finishing touches to the pig arc
15:11and the fencing all looks to be complete.
15:15Well done, George.
15:16Well done, George.
15:17Well done, George.
15:18Well done, George.
15:19For putting up with me today.
15:22Yep.
15:23Happy?
15:24Yeah, perfect.
15:25In just three hours,
15:27the applicants have transformed this corner of the rushy meadow
15:30into a perfect pig pen.
15:37We're just waiting for the pigs now.
15:44This'll be fun, won't it, Tristan?
15:46This is going to be great.
15:48You have no idea what's coming to you.
15:50Have you had fun?
15:52I had a great time.
15:53You should have seen Ryan.
15:55He did a cheeky little dive, he did.
15:57We've done a pinky promise with two lovely little girls
16:01that we're going to look after them.
16:03Absolutely.
16:04So we've got to make sure...
16:06They're like ours. These are our puppies.
16:08We'll see how this goes.
16:09You ready?
16:10Well, as good as we're going to be, isn't it?
16:12Super relaxed.
16:16Come on, welcome to the home.
16:18She's a big girl.
16:19There she comes.
16:22There you are, sweetheart.
16:25Here they come.
16:27Which side do you want?
16:28On that side there.
16:29Keep coming.
16:30Good girl, Emma.
16:37Look at her go straight away.
16:44She looks happy.
16:45See you for home.
16:54Don't think we're in a good spot here, kids.
16:56I think today's really shown me how much I fell in love with them.
16:59I knew everyone would.
17:02They're just amazing.
17:06Today has been probably the best day I've had
17:09since I've been in this process.
17:11I feel really accomplished today, I really do.
17:25It's a new day in the search for this farm's new tenant.
17:29And with the job of the pig enclosure done
17:32and the pigs settled in,
17:34this morning it's back to business
17:36and the realities of making a living here.
17:39It's a big day because by the end of the task,
17:42another applicant will be leaving this unique selection process.
17:49This is going to be a fascinating one today
17:52because, interestingly, all of you, apart from one,
17:55have selling produce direct to the public
17:58as part of your vision of this place.
18:01So we are heading to the tourist hotspot of Portmerion
18:05so that you can get straight in front of those customers.
18:08From the National Trust perspective,
18:10what do you want to see from today?
18:12So whenever you put something in your business plan,
18:14essentially we want to see that you can deliver on that.
18:17And this is the perfect opportunity for us to see
18:21how you interact with the public,
18:23what your pricing strategy is,
18:25and, quite frankly, just how good you are at doing this.
18:29So on that note, get yourselves sorted out
18:31and we shall see you at Portmerion.
18:33It's going to be fun, this. It's going to be fun.
18:43This is not an easy thing to do, is it?
18:45It's a real challenge and some tenants can do it and some really can't.
18:49To sell direct to the public is really challenging
18:52and I think it does require skills that you've either got
18:55or you probably haven't.
18:57You need to want to do it.
18:59You need to want to have that communication and that connection.
19:02Who do you think is going to do well?
19:04Well, I think George and Greg will do really well at this.
19:08I'm expecting great things from Liberty as well.
19:11She's a good communicator.
19:13Ryan and Laurie will throw themselves into this.
19:16And also, I think Lloyd and Abigail will be good at this.
19:20For Joanne, this is going to be quite a tough task
19:23because he hasn't got Sarah with him.
19:26But what makes it really challenging for Joanne
19:28is that he doesn't have any direct selling in his business plan
19:32so we're expecting him to struggle today.
19:35And I don't think this would be a natural task for him in any event
19:39so that makes it even more challenging.
19:42I expect some of them to really flourish
19:45so it's going to be really interesting to see who puts themselves forward
19:49and who is happy for others to go forward.
19:52And today is about working in front of the farm gate
19:55as opposed to being behind it.
19:57Absolutely, and for those who've said that that's what they're going to do,
20:01then let's see if they can do it.
20:09The applicants will be running a special pop-up market here at Portmerion.
20:14Come on round.
20:15With over 200,000 visitors every year,
20:18it's the perfect place to prove that they can champion premium Welsh produce.
20:24Gather round in what is this wonderful little bit of Italy
20:27less than 15 miles from the farm.
20:30And Giles, give us an idea of how this is going to work.
20:34So there's two blue sheds
20:36and you are going to be selling some local produce.
20:40And you're going to be told what the costs of production are
20:43and then it's going to be up to you to determine
20:45how much you're going to sell them for.
20:47And this is not a competition about who can sell the most.
20:50This is about watching you take a product,
20:53price it correctly and see how it sells.
20:56Well, the biggest question has to be, who's at what shed?
20:59Well, you've sort of selected yourselves bizarrely,
21:02right down the middle.
21:03So shall we put a line where Greg is?
21:05There you go.
21:06And there you are.
21:07I mean, four and four because Sarah's not here.
21:11Do you think Sarah would have liked this, Ewan?
21:13Yeah, maybe.
21:14We'll look after him.
21:17If you're happy, then let's begin.
21:22Yeah, I'm really interested about what we have to sell.
21:25Ooh!
21:26The potential tenants will be selling out of two market sheds,
21:30which are used for trading in the village.
21:32Ah!
21:33These guys are in my business plan.
21:35Well done, George. You're ahead of the game.
21:38We've got some leeks. Leeks, meat.
21:40Leeks, meat and honey.
21:41I'm quite happy with our selection. Yeah!
21:44Abbey and Lloyd, George and Liberty will be selling honey
21:49made by Alan and over seven million bees
21:52living in hives dotted across Arrerie.
21:57As well as leeks, a national symbol of Wales,
22:00grown locally on a family farm.
22:03And a selection of Welsh-reared organic beef.
22:07Right, mini steaks.
22:09Oh, here they are. Under the mince.
22:12They've been given the production costs by the farmers,
22:15but it's up to the applicants to decide how much they'll sell them for.
22:20In theory, you want 2.5 times what the cost of production is.
22:25Liberty is one of the most experienced
22:27when it comes to direct selling.
22:30My vision for the farm is to create an agroecological farm
22:36selling meat and vegetables.
22:38I started a small skincare brand which is based on pasture-fed tallow
22:45and I also use herbs and I dry those and infuse them in oils.
22:50I've set up a farm shop before and done lots of direct selling,
22:53so I love talking about food and how it's produced.
22:56Two, seven grams? Yeah.
22:58We would sell that size jar of honey at £7.
23:01You'd get nine for it.
23:04Across the square, Ryan and Laurie, Eoin and Greg...
23:08Do we come in slightly lower? ..are pricing their products.
23:12I wouldn't pay 50p more for this than this.
23:15They look the same, don't they? Yeah.
23:18Along with a selection of award-winning preserves,
23:22they'll be selling organic lamb, reared locally,
23:26and Welsh potatoes, grown sustainably on a family farm in Ereddy
23:31for over 50 years.
23:33And we don't want to overprice it. No.
23:35If we sell it for £3, you double your money there.
23:38Double your money.
23:39What we don't want to do is we don't want the farm market
23:42to be selling any different to what we sell to the public.
23:45You need, like, that continuity.
23:47It would be ideal if one person went out with the tasters and said,
23:51you know, taste this, head over to there.
23:53Greg's the master of this, he does this day in, day out, so I back him.
23:57So how much were you thinking?
23:59£4.50. Yeah.
24:03Are you OK? You heard yourself?
24:05Greg sells his ex-director customers back in Cheshire.
24:09Ryan, are you going to do tasting with the customers? Yeah, yeah.
24:12OK. That'll bring them in, won't it?
24:15And as he's the most experienced, Ryan is following his advice
24:19and preparing to hand out some samples
24:21to tantalise the tourists' taste buds.
24:24A little Welsh diamond coming out.
24:26Are you going to use your manners? I am going to use my manners.
24:29If nobody buys, they're in trouble.
24:41The six remaining applicants vying for their dream farm tenancy
24:45are 15 miles away.
24:47I think it looks good, don't you guys?
24:49Getting ready to sell local Welsh food at a pop-up market.
24:53Have we got change?
24:55All but one of them intend to sell what they would produce on the farm
24:59direct to customers.
25:01And now this is their opportunity to show the landlords
25:04that they're up for the task.
25:06Hello, dear customer, would you like to sample some of my jam?
25:10Who wants some jam?
25:12You want to be jammy? Come to my jam.
25:15Tattles? Got you covered. Meat? Got you covered.
25:19As a Welsh farmer himself,
25:21Ryan's taken the opportunity to champion the local food
25:24by offering tasters.
25:26We've got some free samples, if that might interest you.
25:29We certainly would. You crack on with that.
25:32While his wife, Laurie, looks after the stall with Greg.
25:35Got some lovely chutney.
25:37The reason I'm passionate about Welsh producers is because I am one.
25:41I know how hard it is to get our message across.
25:44But it's all made with Welsh products.
25:46Jackson plays a massive part in my business
25:49because with a number of stock and that,
25:51that is the only way the livestock pays for itself, really.
25:54And I love it.
25:56It's like the Welsh Vikings have woken up or something.
25:59And they're all localised.
26:01All locally in Welsh, in Wales, which is fantastic.
26:04And they're selling them over there in those bags?
26:06Yeah. I would highly recommend the chutney.
26:08With Ryan and Eoin out recruiting customers...
26:11Red onion, yeah, that's special.
26:13You're our first customer of the day.
26:15You get a smile.
26:17Greg and Laurie have made their first sale.
26:20Thank you very much for that. I hope you enjoy it.
26:22Mind the slope.
26:24However, the green team are still making their final tweaks.
26:27Mind the pots of honey sliding.
26:29So they've just put the table on the main throughway
26:32for all of the tourists to come round.
26:34One of you want to stand behind the till? I'll be behind the till.
26:37I'm going to speak to every single person that exists in this place.
26:40Sorry to intrude. We're open now. We're now ready.
26:43We're selling honey, beef and leeks. Would you like to come and have a try?
26:46We're open now. We're selling honey, beef and leeks.
26:48Honey, beef and leeks.
26:50It's a funny combination.
26:52It's a funny combination, but you haven't got to buy them all.
26:54You can just buy your favourite. Oh, they're not all one thing?
26:56No, not one thing, no! It's not a honey, leek and beef pie.
26:59Having decided to take on the role of persuading customers
27:02to come to their stall...
27:04This is from Heather.
27:06..George is showing that he too can make some sales.
27:08It's really quite a different taste.
27:10So Alan's got different hives on different farms.
27:12I've got their individual flavours in there.
27:14Probably in your head you think honey's honey,
27:16but then when you taste the different ones, they're really quite different.
27:19I think it's all that storyline.
27:21If I was a punter and I came here, I would fall into that journey.
27:25Thank you very much.
27:27Thank you. Thank you very much.
27:29But he isn't the only sales powerhouse on the team.
27:32You've got Heather honey. It's a very, very distinct taste.
27:36Oh, that's banging.
27:38I've been doing sales jobs for the last four years.
27:40It's a lot more crystallised,
27:42so you'll be able to tell the difference really easily between them.
27:45I'm half Irish, and you have the Bliney stone.
27:49You can talk to anyone and you can sell anything.
27:52So each piece of honey would have been got from a different season,
27:55and that's why it's so different.
27:57But I have that one and that one. Yeah.
27:59We have got some Aberdeen Angus organic beef in the fridge as well,
28:04which will go well with your honey and the leeks.
28:08We're proud of the farming,
28:10and so our passion then to deliver it to the customer
28:13with such pride and happiness, I think that goes an awfully long way.
28:17Hello, sir. Welcome.
28:20Help yourself to a bit of a taste session.
28:22They're £9 a pot.
28:24Sounds lovely. It is lovely.
28:26The pricing is pretty high, honey for £9 a jar.
28:31It'll be interesting to see how successful they are at those price points.
28:35You'll have to take a box.
28:37Have you got a pack of one of those, one of those and one of those?
28:39I have.
28:40I'll go with this one then.
28:45Across the piazza...
28:47Enjoy the rest of your day.
28:48..with Ryan and Laurie...
28:49£3 a can.
28:50..Johan...
28:51Would you like a try?
28:52..and Greg, selling is also heating up.
28:55Whoa, that's got a bit of a kick.
28:57Too hot.
28:59And Johan is taking his team's products to the customers...
29:02How are you?
29:03..including potatoes.
29:05We've got some potatoes, some jam.
29:07You can go to sell some Welsh local produce to the tourism here in Portsmouth.
29:13Potatoes.
29:14Potatoes.
29:16You can have... The stonding is up there, if you want.
29:19The chutney, the jam and the chillies are all £3 each.
29:24And you can have a taster.
29:26It wouldn't be his natural environment.
29:28It's not the kind of character that he is, really.
29:31But, you know, he's getting stuck here.
29:33He is, yes.
29:34And, you know, out of his comfort zone.
29:36Would you be interested in some Welsh produce?
29:39No, I'm not really.
29:41OK.
29:42I'll take that home.
29:43Thank you all the same.
29:44While Johan is struggling to sell his wares,
29:46not everything is rosy for the green team, either.
29:49Which would you like?
29:50The soft stuff.
29:51Peter, if you take it, the till's just in there.
29:53Just in the little booth there.
29:54Oh, now, don't complicate things.
29:56We're not quite sure what liberty is rolling in all of this.
30:00I think they're happy to pay cash.
30:02Perfect. Very good.
30:03Thanks very much. Nice to see you.
30:05I'm very happy sticking around here
30:07and I quite like just having a chat with everyone.
30:12To remain at the hut where nobody tends to be
30:16is rather worthless.
30:19I'll take you up there.
30:21Make it nice and simple.
30:23We're kind of wondering whether she'll play a role
30:26in any of the selling.
30:28Is it yummy? Is it yummy?
30:31I'll leave them to do the hard sell.
30:33Is that a bit mean? I'm team Manik.
30:37It's a nice runny honey.
30:39I'll go and pop them in a bag for you, sir.
30:41Yeah.
30:43All of it.
30:44Go for all four.
30:46Meanwhile, Greg is proving that being outside of their shed
30:49with customers is beneficial.
30:51Have you come far today? Golden question.
30:53Cricket. Oh, cricket. Lovely.
30:55Greg is bringing his whole experience into this.
30:58I think he probably is.
30:59£10.50. Yeah. Thank you.
31:01Right, you enjoy.
31:03I like Greg's approachability.
31:05He's, um, really easy.
31:08He's very credible, yeah.
31:11And we just want to champion locally sourced,
31:14locally produced produce,
31:16trying to keep it as local as possible.
31:19This evening, another potential tenant will be leading the process,
31:24so landlords Giles and Truston have some tough decisions to make.
31:28Help yourself to try it.
31:30And then there's leeks as well.
31:32We've been really impressed with Lloyd and Abigail. Right.
31:35From the outset, I think they grabbed this task.
31:38Yeah? Yeah.
31:39Cos they are selling quite quickly.
31:41Right, two subsets then. Yeah?
31:43I'll give these to Lloyd and he can take and package them up for you.
31:46I'll go and pack a box for you.
31:47They're there as a team selling a product
31:49and so they've been particularly impressive today.
31:52Really enjoying it. Good.
31:54I love talking to people, so...
31:56And you know that. I do.
31:58So this is produced by a guy called Alan.
32:00He's got hives on different farms
32:02and that's what gives it the different flavours.
32:04George has been full of energy, full of conversation,
32:07full of excitement.
32:08If I let you try my favourite one...
32:10Which is exactly playing to George's strengths.
32:13This one is the best seller of the day. Is it? Yeah.
32:16The person that I was really excited to see today was Liberty.
32:21But, you know, she's been hiding away back in the little hut.
32:25Did you want any leeks?
32:27Not right now, no, thank you. No.
32:29Unexpected, this is where she would have had her strength
32:32and, unfortunately, she hasn't taken the opportunity
32:35to show that she's got those qualities.
32:38Jam, please, go bad.
32:40Ryan and Lowry are doing brilliantly.
32:42Ryan has not stopped out with his samples.
32:45A bit of a kick to it.
32:46A bit like, you know, the Welsh dragon
32:48wakes you up in the morning. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
32:50And, of course, as soon as they get to the table, they get Lowry,
32:53which is brilliant.
32:54Oh, we're having a barbecue tonight.
32:56In this weather, do not blame you.
32:58You know, she's chirpy.
33:00Well, if you fancy any preserves.
33:02And amenable and she's wanting them to have a good time.
33:06And Greg as well.
33:08You must try the jam. Why?
33:10Because it's produced right here. Right.
33:13Sustainable and it is beautifully tasty.
33:17I've seen a confident Greg today.
33:19That does taste of blackberries. It does.
33:21And that doesn't surprise me one bit, really, you know.
33:24Do you think Ioan is missing Sarah?
33:27Yeah, definitely.
33:29And of all the tasks where Ioan has probably needed some support,
33:34it would be today.
33:35This is the one, yeah.
33:36Yeah.
33:37He's felt a little bit aimless, not really knowing what to do.
33:46Er, sold out, guys. Sold out.
33:48Shop, shop, kids. All done.
33:50Well done, team. High five.
33:54All five.
33:55All five.
33:56All right.
33:58And we're closed. Thank you very much for your custom.
34:00I think it's really good for us as farmers
34:03to get out and speak to our customers.
34:06Now we know there's a market for it,
34:08we can definitely push it a bit more in our business plan, can't we?
34:11Oh, man, what a day we've had.
34:13I'm sure it's been an invaluable experience for all of you,
34:17in whichever way you want to do this selling to the public.
34:20My biggest takeaway from today is the storyline
34:23of where it comes from, who we are and what we're achieving.
34:26I think it was good to showcase what we've got on our doorstep,
34:29really, isn't it?
34:30I think what's striking me is how obvious it is
34:33that you guys have to be jacks of all trades.
34:36It feels like we're a world away from the farm.
34:39This world that you are hoping to live within
34:42is a really challenging one, with so many different elements to it.
34:46Well, this was never going to be about who sold the most,
34:49but I do have the stats in my pocket. Do you want to know?
34:52Do you want to know? Yeah. Yeah. OK.
34:54So the greens...
34:57..took £680,
35:00with a profit of £475.
35:05The reds took £200,
35:09with a profit of £132.
35:13It's an eye-opener.
35:15Effectively, you had to sell three jars of preserve
35:18for every one jar of honey.
35:20It's just thinking that through
35:22in terms of how you want to price whatever it is you're bringing here.
35:26We could have pushed that price up a quid or two
35:29and, you know, they would have brought it without no hesitation.
35:33So it's something for us, a learning curve for all of us as a team,
35:36isn't it?
35:38Back on the farm that they all hope to take on for the next 15 years,
35:44George's time as temporary farm manager has come to an end,
35:48and Giles and Tristan are about to choose
35:51who'll be in charge for the next 48 hours.
35:55Bed yourselves down. We need them.
35:57I'm so happy.
35:59You do need it. It's been full-on.
36:01You guys are going all out to try and get your hands on some honey.
36:05So who have you decided is going to be moving into the farmhouse tonight?
36:09So there is a person that we've seen show
36:13that they've got experience in direct selling
36:16and actually take the lead in some of the logistics
36:19and what it takes to hold pigs here.
36:22So we're delighted, Greg, to ask you to look after these pigs
36:26for the next 48 hours.
36:28Thank you. It's a heavy burden.
36:33You're going to be grabbing piglets at two in the morning.
36:36My pleasure, my pleasure.
36:38Thank you so much. Thank you.
36:40Well done. So that does mean, Greg, that you're going to be safe for tonight.
36:44For the rest of you, as you know, this is a selection process
36:48and there's only one farm.
36:50So very shortly, Giles and Tristan will come and find you
36:54and they'll let you know who's staying and who's going to be leaving us.
36:58Best of luck to you all.
37:00Well done, well done.
37:02Oh, bro.
37:04Oh.
37:09We expected Greg to shine
37:11and, you know, selling is something that he's well used to.
37:14No surprise that he was quite active in Portmeirion.
37:18Oh, look at that.
37:20He was leading the charge and the most experienced pig handler
37:24and knew what the pigs would be looking for.
37:26I can't wait to tell the family that I've managed to get in the farmhouse.
37:32Yeah, incredibly lucky. It's so beautiful.
37:37With Greg settling into the farmhouse
37:39and one more applicant leaving the process this evening,
37:43the remaining hopefuls are waiting to find out
37:46if their dream farm tenancy could still be a reality.
37:51For one of our applicants,
37:53the dream of a 15-year tenancy on 600 acres of North Wales
37:58is about to come to an end.
38:03Today, Giles and Tristan have another difficult decision to make
38:08as one more applicant has to leave the farmhouse.
38:13Today, Giles and Tristan have another difficult decision to make
38:18as one more applicant will be leaving this process.
38:22Well, it's been another full-on and eye-opening 48 hours here.
38:28Any surprises for you?
38:30Well, I expected the kind of energy
38:32that people like George would bring into this.
38:35It was the first time, really, I think he could step into a comfort zone.
38:38This was nothing to do with livestock.
38:40You know, this is something he could really get his arms around.
38:43What we still have got a shortage of is real farming skill.
38:48Is this the farm for someone like George?
38:53Are they thinking about what they're going to tell us now?
38:56Oh, goodness. Can we do all the eggs?
38:58Lloyd and Abigail, they've come off the back of a pretty stark message
39:03that they've got to sort out this business plan.
39:06They've played a really important part in getting the pig pen sorted.
39:10Posmerion was a great experience of seeing them both at work.
39:16There's a lot of strength because they're working together
39:20and they were effective at it.
39:22Let's move on to Ryan and Lurie.
39:27I don't think Ryan and Lurie put a foot wrong in the last couple of days.
39:31I've been impressed.
39:33Liberty, I was hoping to see shining Posmerion,
39:38but she was hiding in the shadows.
39:40I wanted to see her out there speaking with the public.
39:43No, this was a moment where she should have shone and didn't.
39:49Ioan, going to Posmerion to do an activity which,
39:53A, wasn't in his business plan and, B, he had little or no experience in,
39:58we did see some weaknesses because of that.
40:01He was a fish out of water and I think he did lack confidence.
40:05Have you decided who you're going to be sending away from the farm?
40:10It's getting difficult, of course,
40:13but we're making decisions based on what's right for this farm
40:18and looking after it in a way that suits the National Trust's ethos
40:22of farming in a high nature conservation landscape.
40:27For one of our applicants,
40:29the dream of a 15-year tenancy on 600 acres of North Wales
40:33is about to come to an end.
40:38Someone's going home tonight. I cannot see how it could possibly mean.
40:43I think I may be out, right?
40:47I don't like this. I don't like this.
40:49Hopefully, I'm still here.
40:51Hello. Hello.
40:53Hello. Good to see you.
40:55Hello. Good to see you, George.
40:57They're coming towards us now.
40:59Evening. Hello.
41:01Not like that.
41:03So, well done.
41:05The last 14 hours you've been brilliant to see
41:08working on this farm and off-farm as well.
41:11Well, we've really enjoyed seeing you over the last couple of days, George,
41:15and I think you've shown us what we sort of expected to see
41:18and particularly how you were handing over to Greg
41:21to ensure that his knowledge was also utilised on the farm.
41:24Looking forward to the next couple of days,
41:26so hopefully you'll stay with us.
41:28Well, of course, if you'll have us.
41:31We'd really like you to continue in the process.
41:34And the last time we met, it was quite a tough meeting for you guys.
41:38Absolutely.
41:39What have your reflections been since that time?
41:42We've had a lot of discussion on what changes
41:45we would like to implement in our business plan.
41:48I think we were trying to do too much too soon with too little money,
41:51so, yeah, we've re-evaluated that
41:53and we're mid-process of rewriting that for you guys.
41:57So we've liked what we've seen in the last 48 hours
42:00and we are pleased to hear of the alterations that you're making,
42:04so we'd like to keep you in the process.
42:07Thank you very much.
42:09Thank you, guys.
42:11Great.
42:15Oh, that doesn't get easier.
42:17At least I didn't have to throw the eggs at them.
42:21While it's good news for Ryan and Laurie,
42:25George and Abi and Lloyd,
42:28the wait continues for Ewan and Liberty.
42:40Hi, Ewan.
42:41Hi.
42:42Pretty amazing, hey? Leaping piglets.
42:45Oh.
42:46So we've enjoyed seeing you trying to flog potatoes in Patermarion.
42:51What have you thought the last 48 hours, then?
42:54My main concern is that I'm obviously applying for the tenancy on my own
42:59and I've been trying to work out if it feels the right farm for me.
43:03How you felt without Sarah being with you.
43:06Yeah.
43:07I need to be realistic about what I can manage as well.
43:10Yes.
43:11Well, we think that your proposition is a really interesting one.
43:16Yeah.
43:17I've really enjoyed getting to know you and understanding more your vision.
43:23So I'm sorry it finishes for you today.
43:26It's just not the vision that can be undertaken here,
43:29but there are farms where it would be perfect.
43:32And what I want you to do is take away from this experience,
43:36keep that enthusiasm for your vision,
43:39not compromise, and the right farm will come along.
43:42Well, well done.
43:43Oh, thanks, guys. Thanks, guys.
43:45Take care.
43:46Yeah.
43:47We want to try and make sure that we give you every opportunity
43:50to sell the rest of the potatoes.
43:52So, Joanne, stay with us for the next couple of days at least.
43:56Thank you very much.
43:57You've done well.
43:59You really have.
44:04It sounds like you've both come to the same conclusion.
44:06I feel like we have.
44:07I mean, it's a big commitment and it's a beautiful place,
44:11but it's a challenging place, you know,
44:13and I think the factors have got to be aligned.
44:16It's been great to get to know you.
44:17It's been lovely, yeah.
44:18Yeah.
44:19Joanne, yes.
44:20You held the fort, mate.
44:22You held the fort.
44:23Well done.
44:24Not myself.
44:25No, honestly, mate, you're doing really, really well,
44:27and I'm sure that Sara's going to be really, really proud of you.
44:29Hopefully.
44:30Yeah, whoever's got the farm is going to be very lucky.
44:33Mm.
44:35Oh, you're well done.
44:38Bittersweet is probably exactly what it is.
44:40Like, it's really sad to go because it's been a great experience,
44:43but I think it's the right thing.
44:46It's OK.
44:47It's good to know when the time's up.
44:50What am I going to do without you, Marie?
44:53You know, we're all fighting for that place.
44:55You are my confidante.
44:56I know.
44:58We've all become very close as well,
45:00so it's going to be tough to see anybody go.
45:03It's going to get even worse as the time goes on.
45:06Oh, George, so nice.
45:08I think every day is a new learning for me,
45:10and every day I get more confident.
45:12I love living at the farm.
45:13Yeah.
45:14I really enjoy it.
45:15Every minute you're here, you make it, want it more,
45:18and it'll be very difficult not to have it as mine.
45:21Bye.
45:22It's been amazing.
45:23Well, there we are.
45:24We are now down to five,
45:26and things are just getting tougher and tougher
45:28for the National Trust,
45:29because all of the applicants are proving
45:32that their vision for this place could well be a reality.
45:36So, yeah, I'm pleased I'm not choosing.
45:45Next time...
45:46We're very tall.
45:47..the applicants head for the heights.
45:49Oh, here we are.
45:50Wow. Not bad.
45:51The peak of Ruyva is quite special, isn't it?
45:54It's got a good set.
45:56Get hands-on with the rams...
45:58We're checking their reproductive organs.
46:01..and one more applicant is asked to leave.
46:04You've done really well, but I'm afraid for you the process is over.
46:26.
