00:00A couple's dreams have just come true and their world is shattered in an afternoon.
00:23Should love put a family together, or will everything be caught in a web of lies?
00:30On this very special day, at this very special house, a very special little baby is going
00:44to come live with us, and who do we see but the mommy!
00:52A new beginning, a family built on love.
00:57Mark and Donna were sort of put on this pedestal as this beautiful young couple who had struggled
01:01to have kids, and now they finally were able to adopt this three-month-old baby.
01:06Here comes our special delivery.
01:09Oh, look.
01:12Oh, sweet.
01:13Of course, these home movies are bittersweet.
01:16They have no way of knowing that within just a few months, their beautiful new family unit
01:21will cease to exist.
01:28Donna Brown grows up in a family of sisters in Florida.
01:32Donna was the oldest of the three girls.
01:37She was outgoing.
01:38She loved life.
01:40Donna always said what was in her heart and in her mind.
01:45Mark's brother set Donna and Mark up on a blind date, and things moved pretty quickly.
01:52He was smart, Jewish.
01:54He was attractive, and he was fun.
01:57She just felt like she had found her person.
02:06He always joked about that when one sister marries, that husband marries three sisters.
02:16When Donna and Mark got married, he received a job offer that brought him to Springfield, Illinois.
02:28Mark and Donna had a very nice married life.
02:31He was a nuclear engineer.
02:34Donna Winger was a technician at Memorial Medical Center.
02:40The only thing was she would have liked to have had a child.
02:44Donna called up, and she was hysterical.
02:47She had just found out that she could not get pregnant.
02:51And so when this didn't happen, it took a toll.
02:58There was a lot of tension in their home.
03:02Mark was unhappy for the fact that I know he wanted to have a big family.
03:11The way Bailey came into Donna's life is a really special story.
03:18Donna is working in the operating room when one of the doctors comes in and says there's
03:23a young teen mother who wants to put her baby up for adoption.
03:27And this was the baby that they were going to adopt.
03:30Doesn't she look pretty?
03:32She sure does.
03:33Hi, Bailey.
03:34Say hi, Grandma Sarah.
03:35Necky-poo.
03:36For my mother, becoming a grandmother was something that she had waited for for quite
03:47a while.
03:48Here's Grandma Drescher.
03:50New father Mark always seems to have the video camera in his hand.
03:54Mommy's feeling very comfortable these days with Bailey, and I think we've sort of bonded
03:59a little bit.
04:00Aw, I think we bonded a lot.
04:05Mark was just as excited to become a dad as Donna was to become a mom.
04:14They were just a model American couple.
04:19Donna told me that Mark had a conference.
04:22I said to her, why don't you come to Florida?
04:24It would be so wonderful.
04:28I was excited to show off her baby, and as all of her trips, it was always very sad to
04:34see her go.
04:35Say hi, Daddy.
04:36Say we miss you.
04:37I dropped her off at the airport, and she left.
04:45We had hired a driver to pick her up this way.
04:49She could just take care of the baby.
04:51It was about a two-hour drive, and so this gentleman started opening up to Donna about
05:00issues he was having.
05:02He had a voice in his head named Dom.
05:06Recently, Dom was telling him to hurt people.
05:12And then he started flirting with her, saying that he liked older women and he liked to
05:17have sex parties.
05:18And he invited Donna to join him.
05:22Donna describes a terrifying ride where the driver, a man named Roger Harrington, drove
05:28erratically at 75 miles an hour, talking about demons with Donna and baby Bailey in the backseat.
05:35She calls me, she tells me this whole story, and I said to her, you had a really crazy
05:41driver, but you're home, you're safe.
05:46You're going to be OK.
05:49She said, I really, I am really scared.
05:51After the harrowing ride, Donna had been the victim of some strange phone calls.
05:57They had believed that the driver had been stalking her and was a danger.
06:02So Mark started calling the limousine company and filing a complaint.
06:09Roger got suspended from his job because of the complaint.
06:13Mark suggests Donna write down the full account of her ride with Roger to get the facts down.
06:18Less than a week later, 911 operators receive a terrifying call.
06:23911, emergency, what's your emergency?
06:25Emergency, emergency.
06:27Suspended, he hit my wife.
06:29I shot him.
06:31Please help me, he was killing my wife.
06:43On August 29th, 1995, the Springfield Police Department responded to a 911 call.
06:49Is the man still in your house?
06:51Yes, he's laying there on the floor with a bullet in his head.
06:55When they arrived, they found a very grisly scene.
06:59Donna was clinging to life.
07:01She had been hit no less than seven times in the head with a hammer.
07:05The second victim was an unknown white male lying on the floor.
07:09He still had signs of life and a pulse with two gunshot wounds to the head.
07:13In his wallet he had a driver's license which identified him as Roger Arrington.
07:19I proceeded back to the master bedroom to talk with the husband, Mark Winger.
07:25He kept asking, who's that man that was in my house?
07:31And even though I knew who it was, I did not want to let him know at that point.
07:35We got him calmed down.
07:37Then we started getting into what had occurred.
07:41He was working out downstairs on his treadmill when he had heard a thump upstairs.
07:47When he got to the master bedroom, he had seen his three-month-old child laying on the bed,
07:53which he said Donna would have never done.
07:56He then said he heard noises which made him believe that Donna was in distress.
08:00So at that point he got his semi-automatic weapon out of the nightstand.
08:05And as he walked down the hallway, he observed a man beating her with a hammer.
08:11The male subject looked up at him and then lowered his head again to take another swing at his wife.
08:16And that's when he shot him.
08:19At one point he said, is that guy's name Roger?
08:23And at that point I felt that I needed to answer his question.
08:28I told him yes, his name was Roger Arrington.
08:32And Mark was shocked and he said, oh my God, that's the man who's been harassing my wife this week.
08:38An officer sees that note Donna wrote, it's on the fridge.
08:43He introduced himself as Roger.
08:45He told me things like, Dom makes him do things like set car bombs and killing people.
08:52It got us up to speed on why they were worried about this guy and why'd this guy come to his house.
08:59I owned a trailer park in town and him and his wife rented a trailer from me.
09:06Roger and his wife had had domestic disputes that I had to get involved in.
09:12Knowing what I knew about Mr. Harrington in the past, how quick he was to anger,
09:18I thought that he very well could have went over there to try to get his job back.
09:23And he snapped.
09:26I told Mark that he had done everything he could to try and save his wife,
09:31but we still needed to tell him that his wife had passed away.
09:39It was around 11.03 on a Tuesday evening when all of a sudden we got a phone call.
09:48I remember screaming, Ira tell me, tell me what is wrong.
09:54And finally he said to me, Sarah Jane, Donna was murdered.
10:02And I said to him, murder, what are you talking about?
10:11And then I finally said to him, we have to tell the girls and I have to break their hearts.
10:19And Wednesday morning we were on an eight o'clock plane to Springfield.
10:26When Mark walked in with the baby in his hand, everybody cried.
10:35We had heard right away that it was Roger.
10:40I couldn't imagine what an evil person he was and why he did it.
10:47And why he would do such a horrendous thing.
10:51When the police examined the scene and when they listened to Mark's explanation of what happened,
10:56the detectives came to the conclusion that Mark Wenger acted in self-defense
11:00and the case was closed within approximately 48 hours.
11:06My mother and I started to go to Illinois.
11:09We were taking turns in taking care of the baby.
11:14Donna's family reports that during this time period, Mark was withdrawn.
11:19He was drinking a lot and watching violent movies.
11:22I didn't understand it, but I loved him because he loved Donna.
11:27And that's what was important to me.
11:31We needed to get him some help.
11:33So I suggested to Mark that he hire a nanny.
11:38And in comes Rebecca, this young, beautiful, tall, blonde nanny
11:46who has a heart of gold, wants to help out this poor man.
11:57This is the first time I've sat down to tell my story.
12:02Bailey, you look the best.
12:04I was going to become her nanny or governess.
12:08Can you say hi?
12:10I would move into the home and take care of her basic needs.
12:13And I just felt like she deserved the best.
12:17Peek-a-boo.
12:20Mark asked me to show her all the things about the baby and I felt really good about that.
12:27Say hi.
12:28Seeing her with Bailey, there was really nothing bad we could say about her.
12:35Stand up here. Show Grandma how you stand in your crib.
12:38I was blown away at what this little girl had been through.
12:43Can you say hi?
12:46It was a big responsibility, but I was ready for her.
12:51Bailey made me a mom and sometimes a child has to appear for the mom to be created.
12:59There she is. Most beautiful girl in the world.
13:03There she is.
13:08Someone's here, baby. Someone's here.
13:12Hey, hey, hey.
13:16When you live with someone and you're taking care of a child together,
13:22Knock him down.
13:23She only does that with me.
13:25it's very easy to kind of play house.
13:28You're already put in those roles.
13:33Mark called up one day and he said to me,
13:37I just want to tell you some good news.
13:40The nanny was pregnant.
13:43And I said, oh my God, what is happening here?
13:56When I first met Mark,
13:58Bailey Elizabeth.
14:02Happy Father's Day, dear Daddy.
14:05He was just a provider and a protector and just a stand up guy.
14:14There was nights where we would sit up talking and having wine.
14:27The relationship between Rebecca and Mark grew from
14:32a business relationship to a romantic relationship.
14:38And I remember asking him how he could move on so quickly.
14:42And he explained to me that when you have a good marriage,
14:48it's natural for you just to want that again.
14:52Now, Mark's home movies show a family remaking itself.
14:58Look at Daddy.
14:59Say hi, Daddy.
15:00Bailey's been walking for about a week.
15:02Come here, sweetheart.
15:06Mark had always told me that he was not capable of having children.
15:12I was very surprised to find out I was pregnant.
15:17I was very surprised to find out I was pregnant.
15:20He was thrilled.
15:22He was absolutely thrilled.
15:25Mark put pressure on me to marry him and have children with him.
15:32Immediately, he started going to church with me
15:35to persuade me that we could have that life.
15:39He writes to me, I love you.
15:42You love me and you're pregnant with our child.
15:46I believe that you and I together can raise a family in a truly Christian home.
15:51I would be honored to be your husband and blessed if you were my wife.
15:57Mark and I eloped.
16:00We went to Maui and it was kind of a secret and a surprise
16:04and I didn't even tell my own family.
16:08Here's Mrs. Wenger.
16:10On film for the first time.
16:13It was just so hurtful in knowing that
16:18in his life, Donna could be replaced so easily.
16:24I said to myself, what?
16:26Now Rebecca's pregnant?
16:28Now they're going to Hawaii and getting married?
16:30Like seriously?
16:32Can I say it on camera?
16:33What the f***?
16:38They moved to a house in the country from Hawaii
16:40They moved to a house in the country for a new start
16:43away from that room where Donna was killed.
16:46They have three more children of their own
16:48and home videos show all of the milestones you'd expect for a growing family.
16:53Where's Anna?
16:54There she is.
16:56I was so busy with life and kids.
16:59We were just living our best lives.
17:02For Donna's mother, seeing Mark with Rebecca and her granddaughter is bittersweet.
17:08Sometimes when Sarah Jane would be around Bailey,
17:12she would just cry because she would see Bailey
17:15and she would just want so badly to share that with Donna
17:19and she would just get emotional.
17:21That bothered Mark because he didn't want her to cry around Bailey.
17:26I remember visiting the new house.
17:29Sarah Jane had the baby in her arms
17:32and she had a necklace that had Donna's significance on it.
17:35She wanted to put it on Bailey
17:38and it upset Mark.
17:40Mark said,
17:41Mom, could you please take the necklace off?
17:43It makes me feel bad.
17:45That was the first instance where we felt that Mark said something that was inappropriate.
17:50That was kind of the beginning of the end.
17:53I received a letter from Mark one day
17:56saying to me,
17:58I could not be called Grandma.
18:01So I wrote him back and I begged him,
18:04please let her call me Grandma
18:06and he said,
18:07I'm sorry,
18:08there's no way that I am going to allow her to call you Grandma
18:13and that's the way it is.
18:16We really all decided together
18:18that we just couldn't continue
18:21enduring this type of pain
18:24and Mark was somebody
18:27that we just no longer knew.
18:30Every year for my birthday,
18:32they would always send a birthday card
18:35and I always remember asking my mom,
18:37who's Sarah Jane and Ira?
18:39And my mom would always explain,
18:41those are Donna's parents
18:43and they just want to let you know
18:45that they love you
18:47and that they remember you.
18:52Mark and I,
18:55Mark wanted to go and be checked out
18:59at the emergency room
19:00because he wasn't feeling well
19:02and I looked over in the waiting room
19:04and I saw Deanne.
19:06Deanne had been Donna's best friend
19:08and was in so many of their home movies.
19:10She was close to the family before Donna died.
19:13Say hi, you're Aunt Deanne.
19:15There's Deanne.
19:16And she glared at me like she was just very angry.
19:22Donna's old friend had something to reveal,
19:24something Mark had left out of the story
19:27and without that moment at the emergency room,
19:30the case might have stayed closed.
19:33Deanne Schultz's statements were an absolute bombshell.
19:37Now that this woman came forward,
19:39hello, there's your motive.
19:52I see here on the bottom of the stairs
19:55the Winger Inn, established 1996,
19:58which was the year that we got married.
20:08Everything was supposed to be perfect,
20:10just like in this picture.
20:13Thank you for my business.
20:15But I have learned
20:18that things just aren't always what they seem.
20:25It's been three and a half years
20:27since Donna was murdered
20:30and Mark's married and has a couple kids
20:34and Donna's family is still sort of dealing with their grief.
20:38Right after that chance encounter
20:40in the hospital waiting room,
20:41when Donna's best friend Deanne sees Mark and Rebecca,
20:45Deanne goes to the police with a clue they never had.
20:49Deanne Schultz explained to the police
20:51that she had been having an affair with Mark Winger
20:53prior to the murder of Donna Winger.
20:57Mark was having a romantic relationship with Deanne.
21:01One of our sisters, as we consider her,
21:05and that was something that we never, ever suspected.
21:09In home videos from that time,
21:11Deanne really seems like a member of the family.
21:14Remember, she's on Deanne.
21:16This is my, just the sweetest little niece.
21:21Deanne Schultz also stated that prior to the murders,
21:23Mark made a number of incriminating statements.
21:26She tells them that he said things like,
21:29it would be easier for us to be together
21:32if Donna just died.
21:33All you'd have to do is come in and find the body.
21:36Deanne stated that she declined to participate in that.
21:40After Mark learned about the trip
21:42that Donna took with Roger Harrington,
21:44he told Deanne,
21:45I've got to get that driver in my house.
21:48Deanne said the day of the murder,
21:50he called Deanne and said,
21:52will you love me no matter what?
21:54To which she replied, yes, I would.
21:57Mark and Deanne became very close.
22:01Mark and Deanne continued their affair
22:03for about six months after the murder,
22:06and of course, at which point,
22:07he had already hired Rebecca as the nanny.
22:10Deanne struggled to make sense of the information
22:12that only she knew.
22:14It weighed on her and left her in a fragile state.
22:18Deanne Schultz, after the murders,
22:20her life went on a downward spiral
22:22to the point to where she had engaged
22:25in multiple suicide attempts.
22:28She never came forward until that chance encounter
22:32at that local hospital.
22:34That was a catalyst that caused her, for the first time,
22:37to reach out to someone other than her physician
22:39to discuss the case.
22:40Now the police were able to look at that case
22:42through an entirely different perspective.
22:44Through the eyes of a man who was unhappy in his marriage,
22:46now we have a motive.
22:54The first step when you reopen a closed case
22:56is to go back and look at what you already have.
23:01There are several pieces of evidence
23:03that they're looking at that just don't sit well
23:06with the detectives as they're reexamining everything.
23:10Things they'd noticed at the scene
23:12now take on a new meaning.
23:14For example, Roger brought his cigarettes
23:16and his coffee mug into the house.
23:19Who would do that if they were planning on killing someone?
23:22There was no signs of forced entry.
23:26Not only that, but Roger Harrington left
23:28what was clearly could be used as weapons inside the vehicle.
23:32There was a tire iron.
23:33They also found a knife inside of his vehicle.
23:38Why would Roger come into the house with mayhem on his mind
23:42and just happen to find a hammer on the table?
23:47Mark Wenger wanted to kill his wife,
23:49and then opportunity presented
23:51when Roger Harrington drove Donna Wenger,
23:54and he told Deanne
23:55that he needed to get that man into his house,
23:57and that's exactly what he did.
23:59One of the first officers to arrive at the scene
24:02had a Polaroid in his vehicle,
24:03and he happened to take three photos of the scene.
24:10They showed the positions of the bodies
24:12before the bodies were rushed to the hospital.
24:16And when investigators take a look at those Polaroids,
24:19they realize something isn't adding up.
24:23Mark Wenger had stated that Roger Harrington
24:25was kneeling down right next to Donna Wenger's head,
24:28and he was beating her with a hammer.
24:30He stated that he shot him and that the man fell backwards
24:33so that his feet remained near Donna's head.
24:36In reality, the Polaroid photographs
24:39show the exact opposite.
24:43And as such, there's no way this murder could have happened
24:46the way Mark Wenger described.
24:48The physical evidence, along with the fact of the affair,
24:54it was clear that this was a staged domestic homicide.
25:00They had to come to a reckoning with themselves
25:03that they had made a mistake.
25:09The detective said to me,
25:11I just wanted to tell you that we now suspect Mark
25:16to be the murderer of Donna.
25:19And I said to him, what are you saying?
25:23That's not possible.
25:26It went from Wenger as a hero who was defending his wife
25:31to manipulative, deviant murderer.
25:35Investigators now go back to Roger Harrington's roommate.
25:39Susan Collins had been briefly spoken to initially,
25:43and she had claimed that she was present
25:45when Roger Harrington fielded a phone call
25:47from someone asking to meet him the day of the murders.
25:51Police found a note inside of the vehicle.
25:54It was a bank deposit slip,
25:56and on the back was the time of 4.30 p.m.,
25:59the address, and the name Mark Wenger.
26:02Roger Harrington was not an intruder,
26:04but rather he was lured into that home by Mark Wenger.
26:09Roger's name would be clear.
26:11That was one of the biggest reliefs I had,
26:14just knowing that people would not think
26:18that my little brother was a killer.
26:21Mr. Wenger made some comments about
26:25perhaps it would be easier if his wife were dead.
26:28I didn't see it coming.
26:30I didn't know that this whole investigation was brewing.
26:34I never thought the whole time that they thought
26:36my husband was a diabolical murderer.
26:48There she comes.
26:50Here comes the world's best daddy.
26:53I remember making it to 2001 and thinking,
26:57I think we're okay, it's been a whole year,
27:00and then they still haven't arrested him.
27:02They must not have a case.
27:04We were conducting an exhaustive investigation.
27:07During that same time frame, Mark Wenger was a free man.
27:11And when you look at their home videos,
27:14Mark just looks like a normal dad raising four happy kids.
27:22People still wanted to give Mark the benefit of the doubt
27:27because he now had a new wife and a new family
27:30and had shown no indication of being a criminal
27:33since his wife was murdered.
27:35We knew the stakes of this case.
27:37This was a big case, and it was one that on the front end,
27:40some mistakes had been made.
27:42So we knew that on the second go-around,
27:44we had to have it right.
27:46But the evidence mounts,
27:48and two years of poring over the evidence
27:50gives investigators enough to get an arrest warrant.
27:54I got a phone call, and it was Mark's secretary.
27:59And she told me that Mark had just been arrested,
28:03and the whole body just kind of went numb.
28:07To see him finally get arrested and indicted,
28:10I think people were just absolutely shocked.
28:13I was 6 years old when my dad was arrested,
28:18and I just remember, like, everyone just trying to remain calm
28:23and kind of at the time be like,
28:25Dad's just going away for a while, and that he'll be back soon.
28:30The moment he was indicted,
28:32we moved from the investigative phase into the next chapter,
28:36which was prosecution.
28:38After Dad was arrested, he was always writing us letters.
28:43Bailey, I remember the very first time I ever held you in my arms.
28:48You were so small, but I fell in love with you immediately.
28:52I felt that I owed it to him and to my kids to just stand by him.
29:00Nobody wants to go through a murder trial.
29:03It's very surreal.
29:07I just had to tell myself, walk, sit down, don't fall, don't cry.
29:14In my mind, Mark was innocent before.
29:17He was innocent from the start.
29:19That's what everybody thought.
29:22Winger said he found Harrington beating his wife with a hammer,
29:26and to save her, he shot Harrington twice in the head.
29:30Well, I don't think that Roger would have ever done what they accused him of doing.
29:35All we wanted was his name cleared, you know.
29:39Key for the prosecution, evidence that Roger Harrington had come to the house
29:44only because Mark had asked him to, not to kill Donna.
29:48If he'd wanted to kill her, why bring in his cigarettes?
29:51Why bring in his coffee mug and a note with the name Mark Winger,
29:55the address and the time?
29:58And for us, it was very simple.
30:00If it's a meeting, it's a murder.
30:03Mark's attorney argued that Roger was mentally ill.
30:08He had this mask that he sort of worshipped,
30:11that he had had other erratic behavior,
30:14and that he was capable of this.
30:17They put on their own experts to verify this.
30:22Mark's defense was that everything occurred just the way he said,
30:26and the Polaroids, he tried to explain away
30:31that perhaps the paramedics moved the bodies.
30:38It's our belief that Roger comes to the house,
30:41he is allowed into the home, and there was no signs of forced entry.
30:46And he was executed at that time.
30:51Hearing the gunshot, Donna Winger then comes from the bedroom to investigate.
30:59He then beats his wife to death with a hammer.
31:03Mark then calls 911.
31:06Is the man still in your house?
31:08Yes, he's laying there with a bullet in his head.
31:10Did you shoot him?
31:11Yes, I shot him. He was killing my wife.
31:14A 911 call to most people, I think, showed that Mark was very upset
31:19and very worried about his wife.
31:21Who is this man?
31:22I don't know who he is.
31:25He's a very good man.
31:27In the 911 call, you can actually hear Roger Harrington moaning in the background.
31:34Is he dead?
31:35I don't know. He's making weird sounds.
31:38It's our belief that Roger is not dead at the time.
31:43He told the 911 operator that he could hear his baby crying.
31:47My baby's crying. My baby's crying. I've got to go. I'll call you right back.
31:51Jesus! My baby's crying. My baby's crying. I've got to go. I'll call you right back.
31:57He had already said that he had shot the man and there was a bullet in his head.
32:03When police arrived, there's two bullets in his head.
32:10And then, there's the evidence from the woman Mark was having an affair with.
32:15He said that, you know, it would be easier if Donna just died.
32:19I thought it was crazy talk.
32:22Deanne testified to some of the statements that Mark had made after the chance meeting at Doctors Hospital, where they run into each other.
32:32I just said, you know, how do you live with yourself?
32:35He said that he had found Jesus Christ and that he was forgiven.
32:39He, well, he told me that if I told anybody, our gooses will be cooked.
32:44Deanne Schultz's testimony was able to demonstrate that, in reality, Mark was obviously unhappy, was unfaithful, and who had specifically talked about wanting to kill his wife.
32:56The defense had answers to Deanne's testimony, that she was emotionally unstable, could have been a woman scorned.
33:06I didn't think that anybody would believe her, and I just thought, if that was truly the case, then Mark should have died.
33:14If she truly did that, she would have come forward right away.
33:17Deanne Schultz was granted immunity for her testimony.
33:20There was no direct evidence that linked Deanne to actively participating in this crime, but at the end, she was such a valuable witness as it relates to presenting the motive.
33:30When the case went to the jury, I was sort of thinking, you never know, you just had to wait it out.
33:36And, you know, it was really nerve-wracking.
33:39I really believed that, at the end of that trial, that he was going to walk out and walk home with us.
33:45It takes 13 hours to deliberate, and then the judge announces the verdict.
33:51I instinctively just wailed out loud.
33:56When we found out that the jury had come up with a verdict, our hearts were racing. We had pits in our stomach.
34:05I know I was sitting next to my husband when I heard the judge say that the verdict was guilty.
34:14It just kind of rings in your head and echoes, guilty, guilty, guilty.
34:20I didn't understand how 12 jurors could be so certain that that's how it went down when I had so many questions.
34:31Heartbreaking.
34:33I didn't understand how 12 jurors could be so certain that that's how it went down when I had so many questions.
34:43Heartbreak came first.
34:47Anger came second.
34:52Acceptance came third.
34:57And sadness never ends.
35:02My first thought was to turn around and give Mr. and Mrs. Harrington a hug,
35:10because they buried a son who the whole city of Springfield felt was a murderer.
35:20We knew that Roger was innocent, and it finally got proven.
35:26He was branded a murderer at the time, but then all of this came to an end.
35:30I was ashamed of the way the investigation went.
35:33I hurt Roger Harrington's family.
35:36I run this kid through, his name through hell, for no reason.
35:42I mean, he was an innocent victim.
35:45And to right such a wrong, it felt great.
35:52Say bye-bye.
35:54Bye, Daddy.
35:56We were so convinced that our dad was going to come home, and now he's not.
36:02He is like a chameleon.
36:05I believe that Mark is a monster.
36:11The final chapter of the Mark Winger murder trial comes to a close as Winger is given his sentencing.
36:18Mark was sentenced to life in prison with no parole.
36:22He had two counts against him, one for Donna, one for Roger.
36:27It wasn't just him being sentenced to life.
36:30We were sentenced to a life of a father in prison.
36:36I do feel that that whole time, Mark was giving a grand performance.
36:42I could never come back and say, oh, he got angry at me, or he was rough with the kids.
36:47I had nothing. I had nothing. He was perfect.
37:01The first thought I thought when I was watching that was how much more, Bailey, this has affected you.
37:06And you just remember so much more about Mark in that family unit, in that house.
37:12Looking at the pictures and the videos, it just all feels so fake to me.
37:22I just learned him as this evil character.
37:26So, even though it looks like a genuine smile here, it's just like, in my head, it's like, no, that's all fiction.
37:33I was married to a murderer.
37:37Then after, he was convicted.
37:40I went from being a stay-home mom to being homeless overnight.
37:49I didn't have anything to give my kids. Everything had been taken away. All I had was love.
37:55I love fast food.
37:58And the gift of her maiden name.
38:01Do you remember when we changed your names from winger to Simi?
38:05I do. I think, yeah, it gave us a lot of pride as a family.
38:09When we changed our name, it was just a fresh start.
38:13And it's so symbolic. Like, I'm not a winger, so that shouldn't be the name I'm called.
38:19Rebecca felt that it might be helpful for Bailey to come meet us. That it was time.
38:27I think the last time they saw Bailey was when she was three, maybe.
38:34I thought they could teach her about Donna and her love in a way that I couldn't.
38:41We knew that this would have been a very difficult time.
38:45We knew that this would have been Donna's wish.
38:50That Bailey would continue to be a part of our lives.
38:55Sarah Jane still has my baby picture on her kitchen counter with all of her other grandkids.
39:06It was also Bailey's birthday that weekend.
39:09And they wanted to throw a birthday party for Bailey for all the birthdays that they had missed.
39:18We'd been hurt a lot by the same person, but it didn't break us.
39:24In 2022, Winger's appellate attorneys told us that his appeal had been denied.
39:30He is currently serving two life sentences for the murders of Donna Winger and Roger Harrington.
39:36There's not a day that goes by that I don't, I think about him. I miss him.
39:43If I'd seen him right now, I would just tell him, you know, I truly love you.
39:53There is never closure when somebody murders your daughter. Never.
39:59I think of Donna every day of my life.
40:02We've set up a fund in her name so that we can help other people.
40:08Donna's fund is a part of Women in Distress, a shelter women can go to to escape those abusive relationships.
40:20I think her legacy will live on through the people that we help.
40:24She was so beautiful and you could, like, see how much she loved me and how much she really wanted me.
40:34So we'll say bye bye for now.
40:36Okay.
40:38I miss hearing her voice.
40:41Nothing that we've done or will do in the future will ever replace her.
