Transcript
00:00I'm Karen Carson at Leading Ladies in the Terra Origin interview lounge with Haven Madison
00:08who just blew the doors off of the King's Theatre in Brooklyn and we are so glad to
00:13have you part of Leading Ladies.
00:14Oh my goodness I'm just so grateful to be here.
00:16Like sharing the stage with those women was crazy.
00:19You were on stage with Cassie Ashton and Alessia Cara and the three of you I thought were just
00:26did that feel good?
00:28Oh my goodness I'm such fans of them and there's something about like a writer's round
00:32style.
00:33You know I'm from Nashville so it's just there's a certain energy about it and I feel like
00:36I could write a hundred songs about it now.
00:38I just feel so inspired.
00:40That's amazing.
00:41That's amazing.
00:42Well you were no stranger to show business having been raised in the music world.
00:46Can you tell us a little bit about that?
00:48Your dad was always on the road right?
00:51Yeah so I grew up about the first seven years of my life on a tour bus so I still to this
00:55day I'm going to sleep better in a moving vehicle than in my bed at home which is so
00:58weird but yeah I know it's been amazing and it's given me such amazing tools of really
01:03understanding the nitty-gritty of the music industry and having nothing foreign to me
01:07and it's just been so much fun navigating it in my own personal artistry as well.
01:12And congratulations on making the top eight American Idol.
01:16I'm so impressed that you auditioned with your own song.
01:21I think that is has got to be a little scary.
01:24You blew the judge's doors off and Katy Perry is actually someone you really look up to right?
01:31Yeah absolutely.
01:32I think that was such a special moment because I've always had a lot to say.
01:36I'm very bad at shutting up.
01:38My teachers from high school could probably vouch for that but yeah no I definitely I
01:42have so many songs that I write and I think from the beginning I've always been a songwriter
01:46so when that opportunity came about I knew that I wanted to lead with that and even the
01:49opportunities since then and in the last year just unlocking just a new level of my
01:53writing and getting to walk in new and bigger rooms has just been so amazing.
01:57I'm just so grateful that this is my job.
01:59Seriously I love it.
02:00A lot of great stuff is happening and it's fun to be a girl in the music industry isn't
02:04it?
02:05It's fun.
02:06It definitely has its challenges but I think it's really fun.
02:08I love when I walk into a session and there's a female producer or just being in the room
02:12with boss ladies with leading ladies you know it's just it's empowering.
02:16It's amazing.
02:17Oh I'm so glad.
02:18Let's talk about Why Do The Pills Work.
02:21That is so emotional that song and it makes me want to cry but it's so good.
02:27Do you want to talk about that a little bit?
02:29Yeah absolutely.
02:30I think from a young age I always knew I was going to do music.
02:33I joke that there was like no fighting chance at me doing anything else and I think I always
02:39knew I wanted to be very human and very authentic in the words that I was writing and the music
02:42I was putting out.
02:44So when I first wrote this song it was almost too vulnerable.
02:46I was like I'm not.
02:48I can't.
02:49I can't do anything with it.
02:50I didn't send it to anybody.
02:51But I just think the fans spoke for themselves and my team was just super passionate about
02:56it and it's been amazing seeing that it's so much more than me and so much more than
03:00the room and the guitar I wrote it on.
03:02Just seeing it change people's lives and it's about mental health.
03:05It's about my struggle with it and taking medication and people don't realize they feel
03:09less alone but I also feel less alone because they're responding and reacting to it.
03:13So it's just been such an intimate experience.
03:16And Castle, that addicting melody.
03:20It's so addicting.
03:22When is that song coming out?
03:24That song is coming out May 9th.
03:26I'm so excited.
03:27It's the first time I've said the date out loud so I feel like I'm like waiting for the
03:29thunder.
03:30It's here.
03:31It's here.
03:32Almost.
03:33So tell us about Castle and what that was like.
03:35It's a I think such a relatable song for so many people going through.
03:40I mean everybody's got some kind of you know mental issues like with depression maybe or
03:46anxiety whether you're high or low on it.
03:50Everybody does.
03:51Yeah I think love sucks until it doesn't honestly and so this song was kind of about maybe one
03:57day there's going to be a pivot when it doesn't and there's going to be somebody that is worth
04:00tearing down these really tall exterior walls that I've built up and letting them in and
04:05letting them know that I'm broken but that it's beautiful and they'll appreciate that.
04:10So it's a very hopeful song.
04:11I wrote it about somebody I haven't met yet but I'm excited to meet and yeah I think the
04:15melody is something so different vocally.
04:17It took it took months of learning how to sing it different ways to figure out the right
04:22way.
04:23So yeah.
04:24It's addicting.
04:25I mean it is now.
04:26It's definitely one of those things where it's it has taken a lot of effort to get to where
04:29it is but it just feels so right and so authentically me and I'm really excited.
04:33You're so amazing.
04:34Just like this beautiful soul and you are so I mean I've seen your videos and I've actually
04:42you know listened to your songs so much but seeing you live is a whole different story
04:47and you got a girl.
04:49Thank you so much.
04:50And congratulations on all your success.
04:52Looking forward to Castle.
04:53May 9th.
04:54May 9th.
04:55I'm excited.
04:56I'm excited.
04:57Thank you so much.
