00:00Please welcome to the stage another walk-of-famer in his own right, Kurt Russell.
00:09This is kind of terrifying because the one thing I don't like to do is let John Carpenter down.
00:20So I should have figured a way to not follow Keith.
00:26Didn't do that.
00:28Okay, before I say a few words, just a quick little story because it'll come back to play.
00:33Maybe give you an idea of the relationship between myself and John.
00:37We'd already done a couple of movies together.
00:39We'd done Elvis, and we'd done Escape from New York, and I don't know.
00:43And then we went, and the next thing, John was doing the thing.
00:46And he was kind of going back and forth on casting ideas, and he was already shooting with Larry.
00:50They were up in Alaska, and they were doing some second unit stuff.
00:54And he called me on the phone.
00:56We got together.
00:57We were just talking about the show.
00:58And he said, yeah, I'm having a tough time with this because I'm going to show you something.
01:01He showed me the film.
01:02He said, see the problem?
01:03I said, no, it looks great.
01:04What is it?
01:05He said, well, everybody's dressed for the cold, and they're completely covered up.
01:09Can't really, I don't know one from the other.
01:12I've got like nine guys, and I'm not sure.
01:14He said, I need somebody to hang my hat on.
01:17Started talking about the character of MacCready, and anyway, I ended up playing it.
01:21So now I've got to go to wardrobe.
01:23I go to wardrobe, and I'm still trying to figure some things out, and I see what they've got.
01:27It all looks good, but I keep noticing this ridiculously large sombrero over in the corner.
01:32And I'm kind of looking at it and looking at it, and finally I said to the wardrobe gal, I said,
01:36what's the deal with the sombrero?
01:39She said, oh, that's your hat.
01:43I'm not wearing that hat.
01:45That's insane.
01:46That's a hat wearing a man.
01:47I'm in a helicopter.
01:48It won't even fit.
01:49There's no possible way.
01:50John walks in the room, and he goes, hey.
01:52And I kind of, hey, man.
01:55Pointed to the sombrero, and he went, it's going to be great, man.
01:59He was right.
02:01If I had a dollar for everybody who's come up to me and said, hey, your sombrero, man,
02:05I'd have more money than I made on the movie.
02:07I'll tell you that.
02:09I suppose the single most accurate accolade that quickly comes to my mind today
02:15that describes John Carpenter receiving this particular honor of a star embedded with his name
02:22on Hollywood's Walk of Fame is how totally deserving of that honor John is.
02:30There are very, very few directors whose signature is so clearly and instantly stamped upon a film
02:37that within 30 seconds of viewing it, the informed watcher can boldly and confidently say out loud,
02:44oh, that's directed by so-and-so.
02:48Well, John Carpenter is one of those rare, very few so-and-sos.
02:54A John Carpenter film is exactly that.
03:00It's John Carpenter's.
03:03He so often created the concept, the whole idea for the movie.
03:08He wrote it, directed it, produced it, wrote and performed the music for it.
03:12He built lenses, used new and innovative cameras and techniques that truly created cinematic change, etc., etc.
03:22Of course, he cast it, edited it.
03:26Now, an actor is always grateful for the opportunity to work with directors whose work they've witnessed and admired,
03:38especially if that director's work has been witnessed and admired by very large audiences
03:44as well as official cinema aficionados, let's call them.
03:50But that doesn't always happen at the same time.
03:53A huge audience and the accolades, the recognition.
03:57In some cases, in terms of appreciation, the audience can be far, far ahead of some of those aficionados
04:06and in some cases, for very, very various reasons, might be the other way around.
04:12They love it, but not that many people get to see it right away.
04:17Thank God for video.
04:21But with film, the advent of time itself has a very interesting and organic way of allowing the cream to rise to the top.
04:34In either way, it's discovered.
04:36That test of time is undeniably a dominant factor in the overall evaluation and level of appreciation of any career.
04:45And when it comes to John Carpenter's career, that test of time has resulted in a very, very large bucket full of cream.
04:53And it was churned by the hands of John Carpenter.
05:01Obviously, an actor should and would be grateful for the opportunity to work with that director.
05:09That filmmaker.
05:12But to get that opportunity five times and have as much fun as we had.
05:22All you.
05:26Well, that actor should be inducted into the lucky Hall of Fame.
05:31That would be me.
05:34It's the truth.
05:36So, John, on a very personal note, I'd just like to say thank you for the many opportunities you provided for me that nobody else would have.
05:48And the opportunities to act and just be a part of a John Carpenter film.
05:55Thanks, buddy.
05:57I appreciate it.
05:58And congratulations on today.
06:02So I'm going to leave this with you guys pondering that all the way from the beautiful hills and country roads of Bowling Green, Kentucky, to Hollywood's Walk of Fame.
06:12There's nobody more deserving, my friend, than John Carpenter.
