00:05Good morning, everybody.
00:20Wow.
00:21Dr. Carpenter.
00:23That was a new one.
00:24I didn't know you were a fucking doctor.
00:26That's awesome.
00:27How great is that?
00:29So I'm going to start with saying everything that I'm going to say, John's going to hate.
00:34So let's just get that out of the way right now.
00:37John and I share many, many things in common.
00:40We both love Godzilla.
00:42Right?
00:43There's a Godzilla around here someplace.
00:45We love playing music, and we love scaring the hell out of people.
00:50So it shouldn't be a surprise that we've been friends for around 30 years.
00:58So knowing John the way I do, after we've been in the trenches together on about a dozen films,
01:04the one thing I can tell you is John would rather hear about you than talk about himself.
01:09He prefers not to be put on a pedestal or showered with praise, yet it's about time.
01:17He deserves a little bit of that.
01:21So whatever I say, oops.
01:23Oh, I just read the same one again.
01:27With his films, John jokes that he wants infinite mortality,
01:30but the truth is he doesn't realize he already has it.
01:34That's John Carpenter.
01:36Look, he has his own signature music sting.
01:38In every movie, it's pew.
01:40That's John Carpenter.
01:42And then you have the signature John Carpenter camera wipe accompanied with pew,
01:46and you know it's John Carpenter.
01:49I'm honored to be here and celebrate a man who just loves making movies,
01:52writing, directing, composing, acting.
01:55Yes, I think in The Fog, his line was to Hal Holbrook,
01:58hey, can I get paid, father?
02:00I mean, that's, which I, I didn't even have to look that shit up.
02:03I remember.
02:04That's how, what a nerd I am.
02:06He's fought for his art.
02:08He's bled for it and continues to follow his dream to this day,
02:12and he deserves this day and this praise.
02:16He's altered the way that we watch movies,
02:18and today is about recognizing his magnificent
02:21and unprecedented contribution to the film industry.
02:24And yes, it took me three days to write this.
02:27If I started naming the filmmakers that have been influenced by him,
02:30we would be here for a month because it's pretty much everybody in Hollywood.
02:33I could probably tell you the people that weren't influenced by John,
02:36but that would be kind of boring.
02:38And I couldn't find anybody.
02:40So it's with great pride that I'm here in great company with Kurt and Keith
02:45and Adrian and Clea and all these amazing people,
02:48all that I've worked with, Dean Cundy and Larry Franco, Mick Garris,
02:53paying tribute to my friend and my mentor.
02:55So I'm grateful to be here,
02:58and I think the one thing I'm going to hope is by the time this ends,
03:02we're finally going to find out if Keith David or Kurt Russell was the thing.
03:07So that's how we're going to end it.
