00:00The Philippine stock market is affected

00:02after US President Donald Trump announced additional tariffs

00:06on almost 200 countries.

00:08And for an economist,

00:10additional tariffs can affect the exchange rate of Pesos vs. Dollars

00:15and the price of goods,

00:17including electricity and water bills.

00:20Mark Salazar witnessed this.

00:24My fellow Americans, this is Liberation Day.

00:28And the day that we began to make America wealthy again.

00:58They complain if you want your tariff rate to be zero,

01:13then you build your product right here in America.

01:29or 16.6% of the export of the Philippines in 2024

01:34went to America, the top export trading partner of the country.

01:39Malacanang is still looking into the effect of this on the industries in the country.

01:45But according to the Department of Trade and Industry,

01:48the effect of the new tariffs may not be as severe

01:52compared to other countries in Southeast Asia

01:55that were laughed at by a larger percentage.

01:57Like Cambodia, Lao PDR, Vietnam, and Myanmar

02:02where the tariff is more than 40%.

02:05We are the second lowest reciprocal tariff in ASEAN member states,

02:11followed by Singapore, which was laughed at by 10%.

02:14For example, because the tariff of the Philippines is lower than Thailand,

02:19which also exports coconut,

02:21Philippine coconut exports will be more competitive.

02:25We can still get investors from countries that are laughed at by a large tariff.

02:34So they can go to the Philippines to manufacture

02:39because only 17% is laughed at by us.

02:43According to DTI, there are some exports of the Philippines that are exempted from the reciprocal tariff,

02:49such as copper ores, integrated circuits, and others.

02:54Even though agri-based products, particularly food, are included in the additional tariff.

03:00But according to an economist,

03:02because it is expensive to buy in America,

03:05it may give way to higher interest rates

03:09that may go up to more than Pesos versus Dollars.

03:14Since we are a net importing country, we import a lot of food.

03:21Especially when we import gasoline, it is a primary import.

03:26That's why we are importing expensive goods.

03:31Even our previous debts of Dollars are being paid higher.

03:36Even the debts of utilities that are being paid to our electricity or water bill are also Dollars.

03:45And if the prices in America go up,

03:47the dollar remittances of Filipinos in America will also go down.
