Fire engulfs school but not its memories, history
Jelly Nuñez, ALS coordinator of Camalig North District Elementary School, a former librarian and grade 6 class adviser, is emotional as she recalls the happy memories in the school housed in the Gabaldon Building that burned down on April 1, 2025. The 96-year old structure, considered a heritage in Albay, witnessed generations of students and withstood the strongest typhoons, Mayon Volcano eruptions, earthquakes and floods. According to DepEd data, Gabaldon was built during the American colonial period, as part of a nationwide initiative by Assemblyman Isauro Gabaldon of Nueva Ecija under Republic Act 1801. Reconstructed in 1946 after World War II, Gabaldon's U-shaped design, wide capiz windows, and sturdy wooden beams reflected the architectural style of its era.
