00:00It's Platter's Potato Chips, so now there's two stackable potato chips in town.
00:04Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're looking at potato chip flavors and brands that were discontinued.
00:09Since we're emphasizing the potato in potato chips,
00:12we're excluding corn-based products like Doritos and Cheetos.
00:16New Crunch Taters, my name is Keith.
00:20When that crunch explodes, knock me off my feet.
00:24Number 10. Jalapeno Pringles.
00:27Some snack on chips, but for those who need a treat with more of a kick,
00:30there's always that jar of jalapenos in the fridge.
00:33Who says you can't have both?
00:34Hey, you guys want to stack different Pringles flavors to create new flavor combos?
00:37Here, I'll go first.
00:38Pizza, barbecue, and jalapeno.
00:40The spicy barbecue pizza stack.
00:42For a period, you could.
00:43Hitting store shelves in 2005,
00:46jalapeno-flavored Pringles were introduced as a limited-time product.
00:49Much like the zesty taste they left in your mouth, though, they stuck around.
00:53They remind me of Miss Vicky's jalapeno for sure.
00:57But of course, theirs are kettle-cooked, and these are Pringles.
01:01That's actually a great little flavor.
01:03I'm actually digging these quite a lot.
01:05The fan-favorite flavor was available for more than a decade and a half.
01:09Around 2022, consumers noticed jalapeno Pringles had become scarce.
01:13Pringles confirmed in 2023 that they had discontinued the flavor,
01:18sending grieving fans to purchase whatever remaining cans they could find on online retailers.
01:23This decision left patrons red in the face,
01:25needing a jalapeno to quench their frustration.
01:46Number 9.
01:47Lay's Deep-Dish Pizza Chips
01:48When people think of discontinued chips that pack a pizza punch,
01:51Keebler's pizzerias often come to mind.
02:02Alas, those didn't contain potatoes.
02:04Although Lay's Deep-Dish Pizza Chips are another story.
02:08Part of Lay's Taste of America line, the Deep-Dish Pizza Chips stood out from the pack.
02:18Drawing inspiration from the historic chain Giordano's,
02:21it might not have been as thick as a Deep-Dish Pizza,
02:24but every chip contained the taste of Chicago.
02:26Initially available from 2018 to 2019,
02:29the Deep-Dish Pizza flavor came back in 2022, albeit without Giordano's branding.
02:35Once again, this would be a limited-time offer.
02:38Maybe Lay's will bring the flavor back for another encore.
02:40For now, they're gone with the Windy City.
02:45Number 8.
02:46O'Boysies
02:47While best known for their cookies,
02:49there was a time when Keebler Company tried tapping into other snack food demographics.
02:53The potato chip crowd included.
02:55Even people who love potato chips are surprised at how good Keebler's O'Boysies taste.
03:00Among their sorely missed products are O'Boysies,
03:03which hit the scene in the late 80s with original and sour cream and onion flavors.
03:07There were many words to describe these potato chips.
03:09Bubbling,
03:10crackly,
03:11and as they repeatedly put in the advertising,
03:13o'boisterous.
03:14O'Boysies are o'boisterous!
03:17That phrase never really caught on.
03:20Although, O'Boysies kept consumers coming back well into the 90s.
03:23The writing was on the wall in December 1995
03:26when Keebler closed its Haltom City factory where salted chips were made.
03:30O'Boysies quietly disappeared not long after.
03:33But if they ever return, the snack aisle is bound to become boisterous.
03:39Number 7.
03:39Lay's Wavy Milk Chocolate-Covered Potato Chips
03:42In the mood for something salty and sweet,
03:45Lay's offered the ideal combo with their wavy milk chocolate-covered flavor.
04:05What's that? You say you're more of a dark chocolate person?
04:08Well, good news!
04:09Lay's also produced a dark chocolate flavor,
04:11as well as a milk chocolate with almond pieces
04:13for those who want a little something extra.
04:15Now for the bad news.
04:24When the chocolate-dipped chip arrived in 2013,
04:27Lay's stressed that this wouldn't be a mainstay.
04:29VP of Marketing Ram Krishnan said that could change
04:32if the chocolate chips proved popular enough.
04:35They apparently weren't,
04:36since you can't purchase them anywhere now.
04:42However, if you have some chocolate and original Lay's chips,
04:48they're easy enough to make at home.
04:49Number 6.
04:50O'Grady's
04:51Debuting in 1984, O'Grady's was all about giving people more.
04:55Well, maybe not more flavors, as there were initially only two,
04:59original and au gratin.
05:01When it came to the latter,
05:09few potato chips on the market were cheesier.
05:12O'Grady's upped its game with flavors like
05:14Hearty Seasonings and The Works.
05:16These chips were also considerably bigger than what consumers were used to,
05:20meaning patrons would put their money toward a hefty mouthful.
05:30Speaking of money,
05:31Frito-Lay reportedly invested $25 million in advertising,
05:36championing the slogan,
05:37the more potato, potato chip.
05:39Despite the larger-than-life marketing and taste,
05:41O'Grady's got crushed in the 90s.
05:46We suppose Ruffles provided a close alternative,
05:48but even years later,
05:49O'Grady's leaves us craving more.
05:52Number 5.
05:52Crunch Taters
05:53Home Alone takes us back to a bygone era when VHS tapes dominated the format war.
05:58The Pepsi can possessed a more appealing design,
06:00and Crunch Taters were the snack choice of children everywhere.
06:08In addition to receiving an endorsement from Kevin McAllister,
06:10these kettle-styled potato chips were distinguished with a cowboy alligator on the bag.
06:15After spending years in snack food limbo,
06:17Lay's revived Crunch Taters in 2022 and 2024 with three flavors,
06:22Original,
06:23Barbecue Mighty Mesquite,
06:24and Hoppin' Jalapeno.
06:28Just as Christmas comes and goes,
06:36Crunch Taters sadly weren't back for good.
06:38If you look in the right places online,
06:40you still might be able to wrangle up a bag.
06:42For the rest of us,
06:43Crunch Taters exclusively exist somewhere in our memories.
06:59Number 4.
07:00Tato Wilds
07:0180s kids may fondly remember Keebler Tato Skins,
07:04but for those growing up in the mid-90s,
07:06the mere mention of Tato Wilds will trigger memories among your taste buds.
07:17In addition to flavors like cheese and bacon and sour cream and onion,
07:20these chips came in two different shapes,
07:22Traditional Tato Skin and Criss Cross.
07:24Their time in the limelight was bound to be short-lived,
07:27as Tato Wilds were introduced in 1995,
07:30around the same time Keebler started distancing itself from salty snacks.
07:36Tato Wilds would go defunct by 1997,
07:39although if you can somehow track down a bag,
07:41it'll be like opening a time capsule.
07:43On that note,
07:44the commercials were peak 90s when everything sold to us on TV looked wild.
07:50Number 3.
07:51Daddy Crisp Chips
07:52The 80s and 90s crowd probably won't even recognize Daddy Crisp Chips.
07:57For those who lived through the 70s,
07:59these potato chips were a source of comfort food.
08:04Ray Francis founded the Daddy Crisp Company based in Atlanta.
08:07Potato chips became a hot ticket item for the company,
08:10with flavors like Ripple,
08:11sour cream and onion,
08:12and barbecue taking a bite out of the market.
08:14The brand has since faded into obscurity,
08:17although Daddy Crisp Chips have garnered more attention in recent years.
08:27Although this is primarily due to an old commercial with the tagline,
08:32Love Your Daddy.
08:34While we would love to see these chips make a comeback,
08:36the marketing department would definitely need a new slogan.
08:44100% natural,
08:45100% crisp will do.
08:47Number 2.
08:48Lay's Southern Biscuits and Gravy
08:50They say that potato chips are a snack,
08:52not a meal.
08:52In the case of Lay's Southern Biscuits and Gravy,
08:55we must disagree.
08:56In 2015,
08:58millions voted in Lay's Do Us a Flavor contest.
09:03The finalists included West Coast Truffle Fries,
09:06New York Reuben and Greektown Hero,
09:08yet Southern Biscuits and Gravy emerged victorious.
09:11Haley Green, who submitted the flavor idea,
09:13won $1 million.
09:22Consumers were the true winners,
09:24chowing down on soul food in chip form.
09:26The buttermilk taste will make anyone nostalgic for a home-cooked meal.
09:30While we're on the subject of nostalgia,
09:32the chips were discontinued around 2018,
09:34followed by an all-too-brief return in 2024.
09:37Do us a favor, Lay's, and bring this flavor back for good.

10:08Famous for its nuts and monocled mascot,
10:10Planters has branched out with several products
10:12we'd like to see back on store shelves.
10:14PB Crisps, anyone?
10:16Since we're celebrating potato chips, though,
10:18let's revisit an old favorite.
10:20Planters' potato chips are about as classic as you can get.
10:23The snack giant aimed to compete with Pringles,
10:25with similarly stackable chips in a tennis ball-like can.
10:31The commercials at the time even received testimonials
10:34from people claiming they preferred the taste of Planters.
10:36Whether or not those endorsements were legitimate,
10:38we're still not sure.
10:39But if you're a fan of the chips,
10:41you'll probably be familiar with the Pringles Snack Giant.
10:44Whether or not those endorsements were legit,
10:46it's safe to say Pringles came out on top.
10:48Since we love a snack smackdown,
10:50maybe it's time for Planters to bring back their potato chips.
10:53We think they can stack up against the competition.
11:04Which potato chip flavor do you want to see brought out of retirement?
11:07Let us know in the comments.
