00:00The campaign to lose weight does not depend only on you, your body can do resistance,
00:10made by Lilly with the sponsorship of the association Patients, Friends, Obesity and Onlus,
00:15made in Pamilano, Lombardy, where 3.5 million people are overweight or obese.
00:20The initiative is focused on the Impossible Gym, which visibly represents the daily challenges
00:27of those who live with obesity.
00:29Inside the premises, gym equipment made unusable by yellow elastics symbolize the resistance
00:34of the body to weight loss, a biological phenomenon that makes it particularly difficult
00:39to lose weight and maintain it over time.
00:42The body interprets weight loss as a threat and does everything to try to stop weight loss
00:49and even regain weight.
00:51We have neuro-hormonal factors, we have hormones that increase hunger,
00:56reduce satiety and at the metabolic level we have a reduction of energy expenditure.
01:02So the patient finds himself burning less and having more hunger and less satiety.
01:07And these three factors together determine the weight loss, which should not be seen
01:12as a lack of willpower or guilt, but as a consequence of biological factors.
01:18Today in Italy, an adult over 2 is overweight, about 23 million, or obese, about 6 million.
01:25That is to say, 12% of the population.
01:28Despite this, obesity is not recognized as a pathology in our country.
01:32Recognizing obesity as a pathology would have two important effects.
01:38The first, the other patient in his recognition of being sick and therefore not feeling guilty
01:45for not being able to lose weight or for having that condition of excess weight,
01:51and the second, to have the recognition that he has reached that weight due to a pathology
01:56that in fact we have learned to know in these years as such,
02:01discovering all those that are the biological mechanisms at the basis of weight gain.
02:07On the other hand, it would be important to have recognition also from the point of view of the approach to treatment.
