00:00Pleasant greetings everyone, William Theo here, homegrown, and glad to bring you PTV
00:08News Now.
00:09So let's get to this breaking story that'll be among tomorrow's news headlines.
00:15Talks on bumping up fares on the LRT 1 railway line are over, and the cost to take the LRT
00:211 is poised for a much-needed hike in the interest of upgrading commuter experience
00:27to include supplemental funding to complete construction of the line to Cavite.
00:32And as quickly as the hike upgrade was announced, pushback from consumer, watchdog, and cause-oriented
00:38groups followed up with messages deriding DOTR's LRT train fare hike as untimely,
00:44unconscionable, and anti-poor.
00:47Still amidst public resistance to the fare hike, the DOTR remains firm and unswayed to
00:53recall or even reduce the numbers or amounts contained in the fare hike order.
00:58And as a last-ditch attempt to mitigate public pushback on the hike, the DOTR cited how this
01:05latest fare upgrade is below the suggested hike amount of 20 pesos and only the second
01:11since January of 2023.
01:13Meanwhile, starting tomorrow, April 2, the cost for a single journey ticket climbs from
01:1945 pesos to 55 pesos, while the minimum fare is up 25 percent from 15 to 20 pesos.
01:27Meanwhile, a steward value card's maximum fare charges up to 17.5 percent from 43 pesos
01:34to 52 pesos, while the minimum fare bumps up from 15 pesos to 16.
01:43Next to the blue states of New York and California, Texas has the greatest presence or number of
01:48Chinese Americans who call the Lone Star State home, and whose roots stretch away way
01:54back are intertwined with America's.
01:57VOA's Elizabeth Lee tells us the full story.
02:03In this library at Rice University in Houston, the stories of Asian Texans are waiting to
02:09be unboxed.
02:11The Houston Asian American Archive includes some 500 firsthand accounts of Asian immigrants
02:18and their descendants.
02:19My father came from China.
02:22Oral history gives you a sense of immediacy.
02:24Unlike many of their counterparts, these Asian Americans ventured away from cities like San
02:29Francisco and even New York to settle much further south.
02:34Among the artifacts are pieces of Albert G.'s life.
02:37Albert G.'s CAC plaque.
02:40His daughter, Linda Wu, has kept some of her father's photos.
02:43To the White House for a state dinner.
02:46My dad was born here in the United States.
02:50His father and mother had a laundry.
02:53When G.'s father died in 1927, he went to China with his mother and siblings.
02:59But he returned to the U.S. with his godfather a few years later.
03:03Albert found himself only around 11 years old coming back to the United States.
03:10G. eventually ended up in Houston with the help of friends and relatives.
03:15There he opened restaurants, which attracted Hollywood celebrities who would stay at a
03:20nearby hotel.
03:22G. also helped other new Chinese immigrants settle.
03:26As established families helped newcomers from China, the number of G.'s grew in Houston.
03:33Not all who shared the G. name were related.
03:36Recorded in this book are some of their stories, including that of Rogene G. Calvert's father,
03:42David G.
03:43He came to the U.S. at age 17 in the late 1920s as a so-called paper son.
03:49At that time, we had the Chinese Exclusion Act.
03:53Which banned many Chinese from immigrating to the U.S.
03:57Paper sons and paper daughters are the name given to people who buy false papers.
04:02They were rightfully looking for people that were breaking the law, and unfortunately my
04:07dad was one.
04:08After being detained for almost a year at the Angel Island Immigration Station in San
04:13Francisco, California, Calvert's father was granted permission to stay.
04:18He eventually married and settled in Houston, Texas.
04:22He worked in the grocery business with the help of other G.'s.
04:25Chow says the first large group of Chinese immigrants arrived in Houston in the 1940s
04:31and 50s.
04:32Racial segregation was legal in Texas and southern states through a series of codes
04:38known as Jim Crow laws.
04:41Even though Houston also was subject to Jim Crow law, the law wasn't applied the same
04:45way as the other southern states.
04:47And so there's a sense of more, I guess, more equity in Houston.
04:52That's where people come.
04:53A sense of business opportunity.
04:55Restaurateur Albert G. took part in desegregating Houston's eateries.
05:00His work in the community would eventually be immortalized years later in a web comic
05:06developed by Asia Society Texas.
05:09Kids all across the state of Texas are reading the comic.
05:12Our Asian American students in particular said they want to see themselves represented.
05:16Asia Society Texas also worked with the Houston Asian American Archive to develop lesson guides
05:21for teachers in the state so students can explore further the history of the Asian Americans
05:28who make up the fabric of the city.
05:31Elizabeth Lee, DOA News, Houston.
05:36At this juncture, all eyes and ears to my colleague in PTV's Baguio City Studios for
05:41What's Hot and Happening in the Cordilleras.
05:44Audrey.
06:29So our responsibility now, of course, with our private sector, is to also promote the
06:35lesser-known destinations to disperse.
06:59And this is our Baguio City Police Office, where we fight for the safety and security
07:06of our citizens.
07:10It is a valid pay-a-damag.
07:11The complete on the municipality, the junty, talung infrastructure projects, it is seen
07:15on the FY 2024 Local Government Support Fund, Support to Barangay Development Program.
07:22This is a project to improve the quality of the farm-to-market road in the barangay
07:27of Duagan, Batayan, and Lubon.
07:29We are proud to say that this is a quality-of-life service and local support.
07:35This is shown by the dedication of the local government committee to ensure that this
07:40is a quality-of-life service.
07:42It is also known that Miss Universe 2018's Bengat Youth Leaders, Triona Gray,
07:48will be participating in the Women's Month Culminating Event.
07:52It is also known that Bengat Youth Leaders will be participating in the Multitasking
07:57and Balancing of Community Responsibility.
08:02It is also known that the photo gallery will be the first activity that will show the
08:07cultural heritage of the women and the influence of the tradition.
08:11This is the message of the PTV Cordillera and Audrey Villena of Imbag-Arabi.
