00:00Mr. Chairman, thank you, thank you to all of you for your service to the country.
00:05It matters.
00:06There are a lot of citizens of our country right now that have much greater security
00:13in their life because of the work that you do and the people that are working around
00:16you do.
00:17So I just want to say I appreciate that.
00:18For the folks in Oklahoma, they would definitely want me to be able to say thank you for your
00:22service.
00:23Let me ask a couple of questions.
00:25Director Gabbard, let me start with you on this.
00:28Iran has been listed as one of the top sponsors of terrorism for a very long time.
00:33This is – they are the primary armors of Hezbollah, of Hamas, of the Houthis.
00:38They're arming the Russians to be able to kill Ukrainians.
00:42They continue to be able to destabilize the region.
00:44And just in the recent days, when many nations in the Gulf region have talked about how to
00:50provide greater stability, Iranian leadership stepped out and made very clear statements
00:54they want a one-state solution for Israel, and it's to drive out all Jews.
01:00So this continues to be an issue not just for the region, but for Americans in particular.
01:05So my question is on this, is the sanctions and the effect of sanctions, what we know
01:10about the Iranian response under the Biden administration, those sanctions will turn
01:14down.
01:15We're – quite frankly, Iran has been able to sell $90 billion in oil on the global market
01:20to be able to rearm itself and all the others around the region.
01:24Now sanctions are now going back onto Iran again.
01:27What do we know about the effect of those sanctions?
01:29ASSISTANT SECRETARY RICHARD-CLINTON Thank you, Senator, for the question.
01:35These sanctions have just begun to be reinstated, so the full effects are not yet – have not
01:40yet borne fruit, but the message that the President has sent with his maximum pressure
01:46campaign is certainly heard.
01:49As the Chairman mentioned in his opening remarks, President Trump recently sent a letter
01:54to the leader of Iran expressing his interest in direct talks in order to try to de-escalate
02:01and to prevent war, prevent Iran from gaining a nuclear weapon, but also stated that there
02:07would be military consequences if there was no direct negotiations.
02:12So President Trump is continuing to carry out his vision and mission of peace through
02:17strength, acting in the best interests of the American people.
02:21We will see what choices are made from here.
