An antibiotic-resistant gene originally discovered in Delhi has been found 13,000 km away in the Arctic. Here's the overuse of antibiotics is causing superbugs.
Transcript
00:00It has now been projected that by the year 2050, which is not so far away, we will have
00:16more people die from antibiotic-resistant infections than die currently from cancer.
00:46Most antibiotics are used for common conditions like coughs and bronchitis and things of that
00:56sort, where the majority of them are likely to get better on their own. If you take an
01:02antibiotic now, when you don't need it, then it's more likely in the weeks and months coming
01:07that you'll get an infection for which the antibiotics don't work, and that causes more
01:12of a problem.
01:42The medical and scientific community alone cannot tackle this crisis. We need socio-political
01:59solutions.
