00:00The Sugar Regulatory Administration and the University of Tokyo of Japan joined forces
00:05to strengthen and promote the knowledge of sugarcane production.
00:09Velco Studios reports.
00:14A Memorandum of Understandings was held by the Sugar Regulatory Administration
00:19and the University of Tokyo of Japan
00:21for the exchange of knowledge on the promotion of sugarcane production.
00:25Some of the MOUs included the creation of more varieties in crops
00:30and more effective milling practices,
00:32the creation of biofuel from sugarcane juice and molasses,
00:36and other value-adding products from crops,
00:38such as biochar and sustainable aviation fuel.
00:56Even their machines, harvesters, and tractors are suited for smaller farms.
01:04There are 388,000 hectares of sugarcane farms in the Philippines,
01:09while there are only 22,000 hectares in Japan.
01:11But Japan can produce 70,000 to 100 metric tons of sugarcane.
01:25Their tonnage numbers were okay.
01:27Their yield numbers were very high.
01:29While the Philippines is on the other side of Japan,
01:32the process of planting sugarcane in a larger farm is ongoing.
01:35We are planning to do a varietal exchange.
01:38So we will give them what we think is best for us,
01:41and they will see if it will work for them.
01:43At the same time, they'll do the same.
01:44Research efforts in the SRA are also ongoing,
01:47along with the Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Science or JIRCAS.
01:51They are producing a sugarcane variety with a stronger root system
01:56that is climate change-resilient and fits the wet and dry season of the Philippines.
02:00JIRCAS already imported into the country their own variety that they bred for us.
02:08They feel it will work in our situation.
02:11So it's growing already in the Lagranja, La Carlota Research Station.
02:19So we will try to see if this will work in our conditions.
02:24And if it doesn't work very well, we can still use it for breeding.
02:30The Philippines will also send sugarcane varieties to Japan for study.
02:35Some people from the University of Tokyo will also visit the country
02:39to study the planting and harvesting methods of sugarcane in the Philippines.
02:43Three years of MOU between the SRA and the University of Tokyo,
02:47and it will be renewable for three more years.
02:49Vel Custodio, for Pambansang TV in the new Philippines.
