AccuWeather's 2025 Atlantic hurricane season forecast is out. Lincoln Riddle spoke with our hurricane expert to find out what we can expect for the upcoming season.
Transcript
00:00The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season officially begins on June 1st.
00:06AccuWeather hurricane expert Alex DeSilva says another busy season could be loading in the Atlantic Basin.
00:1213 to 18 named storms. Of those, we expect 7 to 10 of those to become hurricanes.
00:18And of those 7 to 10, we're expecting 3 to 5 of those to attain major hurricane status.
00:25That's Category 3 or above.
00:28DeSilva says 3 to 6 direct impacts are expected in the United States.
00:32While all hurricane-prone areas are at risk for impacts, there are several areas his team is watching.
00:38Houston, all the way around the Big Bend of Florida, and then including the west coast of Florida as well.
00:44And then we also have to be concerned with the Carolina coastline, mainly the North Carolina coastline,
00:49the part that sticks out, the Outer Banks area.
00:52DeSilva says the bookends of the season may be busy depending on the status of La Niña,
00:57a weather pattern caused by cooler-than-normal ocean temperatures in the Pacific Ocean.
01:02A La Niña pattern is favorable for tropical development.
01:06DeSilva says the season may begin with La Niña-like conditions
01:10before transitioning to a neutral pattern midseason and then back to La Niña conditions to wrap up the season.
01:17In the presence of La Niña-like conditions and sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic Basin forecast to be above normal,
01:24DeSilva says storm development could start early.
01:27We looked back at 12 years. 12 years, we call them analog years,
01:31that have a similar pattern to what we expect this hurricane season.
01:35Now, 10 of those 12 years had early season or even preseason development, so we're talking May or June.
