00:00Next, the US's acting ambassador to the United Nations has pointed the finger at Hamas for
00:06Israel's decision to resume its war in Gaza.
00:09The White House has confirmed that Israel did consult with Washington before carrying
00:13out a wave of attacks that killed over 400 people overnight.
00:17More than 600 more have been injured.
00:20The strikes, which killed mostly women and children, have upended relative calm in Gaza,
00:25shattering a ceasefire with Hamas that began two months ago.
00:29Israel has since tried to justify the attacks by arguing that Hamas had refused Israeli
00:33demands to extend the first stage of the ceasefire agreement.
00:37Our Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has just wrapped up an address.
00:41Let's take a listen to what he had to say.
00:47We have prolonged the ceasefire by two weeks even when we did not receive hostages in return.
00:52We were part of delegations in Doha and Cairo with mediators and we accepted proposals even
00:58from Witkoff, and Hamas rejected everything several times.
01:09I committed again and again that if Hamas continues to refuse releasing hostages, we
01:14would come back on the offensive.
01:16And we have resumed fighting in a very forceful way.
01:26Let's cross over live to France 24's Jerusalem correspondent Noga Tanepolsky, who joins us
01:31live now.
01:32Noga, good to have you.
01:33Just tell us more about what Netanyahu had to say.
01:37Hi, Yenka.
01:40Well, Netanyahu didn't address really any of the substance that is roiling Israelis
01:47tonight.
01:49But he made campaign style promises, I would say.
01:53He promised that the return to war today is just the beginning.
01:59He promised that Israel will intensify its war in Gaza, which today began with 80 airstrikes
02:07in a period of 10 minutes.
02:09So that's saying quite a lot.
02:11And he said that negotiations, if Israel returns to negotiations, it will only be under fire.
02:17So it was a very belligerent statement.
02:19And it seemed aimed, among other things, at reassuring his most nationalist, extremist
02:25coalition partners, one of whom quit at the start of this ceasefire process, one of whom
02:33is threatening or wavering, it seemed aimed at reassuring them that they can stick by
02:39him and he's going to stick to war.
02:43Netanyahu did go out a little bit in assuring Israelis that the U.S. backs this completely.
02:50The American statements have been slightly more, I would say, restrained than that.
02:55Well, we've had plenty of widespread condemnation, international condemnation to these strikes.
03:01Tell us about what the mood is like in Israel.
03:05Right, internationally, it's been across the board condemnation of Israel from allies and
03:13enemies alike.
03:15Inside Israel, we're seeing an eruption against this decision by the prime minister.
03:21There had been a very large protest planned for tomorrow.
03:25This came way before a return to war.
03:27A few days ago, the prime minister announced he was firing the director of the Israeli
03:33domestic security agency, the Shin Bet.
03:36And a very significant protest is planned against that for tomorrow.
03:42It kind of framed as defending Israeli democracy.
03:45But spontaneously tonight, there are thousands and thousands of Israelis on the streets asking
03:52for an end to the war.
03:54In Tel Aviv, it looks like there are tens of thousands in two different spots.
03:58In Jerusalem, the police have been dispersing smaller crowds, but fairly violently.
04:03And we're seeing, you know, that 70 percent plus of Israelis who now for going on a year
04:09have consistently said they want an end to the war and they want to see all the remaining
04:14hostages come home.
04:16They're taking to the streets in anger tonight.
04:18Noga, great to have that update from you.
04:21Thank you so much for that.
04:22Noga Tanaposti reporting live there from Jerusalem.
