00:00Harry, first of all, just tell us why we're here at the Valley today, you're
00:03getting involved in a North against South Legends game. Yeah, looking forward
00:07to it, Cholton. So yeah, Robbie Fowler is going to manage the North team, I've
00:11got to pick a team of players that are Southern based or played down the
00:15south of England and we're going to have a game here and yeah, already my
00:20mind's ticking, you know, going who we can get, what players I can get, who, you
00:25know, fit into that. It's got to be players that are retired, so I'm suddenly
00:29thinking, can I get Paolo Di Canio, will he be fit enough to play still, you know,
00:33I saw him last year, he still looked in great nick, you know, Zola would be a
00:38great player if he could still, what a player he was, you know, Mark Noble would
00:44be good, Jack Wiltshire, people like that, you know, they'd still be good
00:48players, so yeah, my mind's ticking over who we can find, you know. Have you
00:52tapped up our own Darren Bent yet, he's been on a bit of a fitness regime as
00:55well? Yeah, Darren would play, Darren would still be a bit, that's a good shout we
00:59could do with Darren, that's a, I like that one, he'd do me for sure. And you're
01:03confident Robbie Fowler obviously is sort of just making his way in management, I
01:06guess it's the sort of master against a potential apprentice, so you want to come
01:09out on top there? I don't know, Robbie's, I love Robbie, you know, great, Robbie's a lad,
01:15another one of the boys really who just don't get an opportunity, he needs to
01:18manage, you know, talking to Robbie Keane last night, he's another one, so much to
01:22offer, you know, don't get the opportunity, no one gives him a job here, you know,
01:26he's got to go to Hungary and manage, Robbie went to Australia to manage, I
01:29think he's quite sad really, you know, we've seen lower division clubs keep
01:33bringing in foreign managers, every time they want to manage you, they bring in
01:36somebody from somewhere, I don't know, you know, and it disappoints me,
01:41there's lots of great lads who could do a good job given the chance. And I guess
01:45the case in point there is Eddie Howell, because there could be an argument that
01:49if Bournemouth hadn't given him that opportunity all those years ago, then
01:53maybe his career could have turned out very different. If Eddie hadn't got
01:55injured playing for me, I signed Eddie, Eddie was my first signing for
01:59Portsmouth, I took him and Richard Hughes, you know, Richard's now gone to Liverpool
02:05as head of recruitment or whatever, big, big position at Liverpool, Richard, but
02:09Eddie was a fantastic, Eddie was a good player, people don't realise what a good
02:13player, Eddie, I always likened Eddie, and listen, there was only ever one Bobby
02:19Moore, Bobby was on another planet to anybody, but Eddie was a poor man's Bobby
02:23Moore, he played at the back, played the same position as Bobby, not the tallest,
02:29not lightning quick, but read the game, understood the game, always in the right
02:33position, could pass it, made the game look simple, had a great football brain,
02:38and so my first signing, when I went to Portsmouth, I'd watched Eddie over the
02:43years at Bournemouth and thought, he should be playing higher, and I took him into the
02:47Championship hoping that he could take me into the Premier League with
02:50Portsmouth, and the first game of the season, Notts Forest, he did his knee
02:54ligaments, made a real mess of his knee, and really that's what finished him, he got
02:58into the coaching after that, you know, and so in some ways might have been a
03:03blessing in disguise for him, you know, the injury, maybe he wouldn't have got into
03:06the coaching when he did, but he's done fantastic, he's a lovely guy, you know,
03:13he never gets too up, never gets too down, he's a steady Eddie, but knows the
03:19game, good coach on the training ground every day out there, working with the
03:23players, he enjoys that most of all, he's been loyal to his staff, he's taken the
03:28Jason Tindall's and Steve Purchase's and the lads from Bournemouth everywhere
03:32with him, he's got a good backroom staff, and Newcastle, if ever a club deserved to
03:38win a trophy, it was Newcastle, they're fans, they've just been amazing, haven't
03:41over the years, you went there every, you know, when things weren't going well, the
03:45place is full up with black and white shirts, everybody getting behind their
03:48team, so for the neutrals yesterday, I love Liverpool, you know, but if they
03:53were anybody, you know, neutral yesterday, they had to be cheering for
03:57Newcastle in a way, because it's been so long and it's great to see them, and we've
04:01seen how much it means to them. And in some ways, England's lost Newcastle's
04:06game, because I still find it perplexing that the FA didn't even speak to Eddie
04:10in the summer when that job became available. No, it's silly wasn't it,
04:13really, I just thought maybe Eddie didn't fancy it at the moment, you know, he's at a
04:16great club, but he would have took it, no one can turn the England job down,
04:20can you? He should have been nailed on for that job, it's crazy
04:24that he didn't get the job, you know, because he's got to win a cup now to prove that he
04:27can manage England, I mean, it's so silly isn't it, really, you know, look at what
04:31he'd done, look at his achievements at Bournemouth over the years, fourth
04:34division, or division two as it's called now, into the Premier, at Bournemouth, it's
04:39beyond belief, you know, if you'd have said to me, Bournemouth being the Premier League
04:43one day, I'd have thought you were off your head, and it took him a hundred years, never been
04:47out of division three or four, so what he did there was crazy, and so, yeah, he's
04:53got all the credentials, everything, you know, and he's English, I want to see an
04:56English manager, and he's the number one, he's the man for the job, there's no
05:00doubt about that. Let's talk quickly about another of your old clubs, Tottenham,
05:03Angeposte Coghlan, I think, under fresh pressure, 15 Premier League defeats
05:07after they lost at Fulham at the weekend, do you think he almost has to win the
05:12Europa League to ease that pressure, because it's a really low position for
05:16Spurs to find themselves in? Yeah, I suppose he does really, to be perfectly
05:19truthful, I mean, I was, you know, when he got the job at the start of the year, I was, you
05:23know, last year, I was thunking for, I was pulling for Ange, you know, I said I
05:27think he'd be the man for the job, you know, I liked him, what I'd seen of him, I
05:31thought he'd be great, it just hasn't worked out, they've had injuries, it's not,
05:35you know, and whatever, but yeah, it's been a poor season, we have to be
05:39truthful, and it's all reliant now, really, on winning, winning this
05:43competition, which I think they should win, I mean, I'm not being disrespectful, I
05:46look at the teams that are in it, and it's a team full of quite second-rate
05:50teams, really, teams that are fifth, sixth in the Dutch League, or wherever they
05:55are, or, you know, the best team probably is, probably the German team, you know,
06:00I'm trying to be frank, I think they're probably fourth or whatever in their league, but
06:03they're not buying Munich, they're not, they're not buying Leverkusen, they're, you
06:07know, they're okay, so, and Tottenham, when everybody's fit, it's a competition
06:11they should win, so if they can win that, I think it'll hide a multitude of sins
06:15this year, because it has been a really disappointing season for Tottenham.
06:18Just one on your nephew, Frank, absolutely smashing it at Coventry, how pleased are
06:23you for him, because he's had a few detractors along the way as well?
06:25Yeah, you know, it's all about, people get carried away, football
06:30management, you know, you lose a few games, you're useless, you win a few
06:34games, you're a genius, Graham Taylor once said, your manager's never as good as you
06:38think he is, he's never as bad, he's somewhere in between, and that is how it
06:41works, Frank, you know, he took over clubs, really, where it's been
06:46difficult, you know, Chelsea, when they had the transfer embargo, finished fourth
06:50still, whatever, now he's gone to Coventry, Mark Robbins did a good job,
06:54you know, fantastic job there, and then Mark lost his job, and then they
06:59had gone through a dip, and Frank's gone there and lifted it again, and done a
07:03fantastic, brilliant job, brilliant job, but I had no doubts about it, listen, what
07:08Frank Dampard don't know about football, you know, he's played a hundred and odd
07:11times for England, he's scored 20 goals every year, he knows, understands the game,
07:15it ain't rocket science, he knows, you know, he's got the best
07:20out of them players, and there's loads of lads, I keep saying, like him, around, you
07:24know, I still want to see the Stevie Gerrards get back in, you know, I think
07:29he's, you know, suddenly he's had one bad or one indifferent spell, and suddenly
07:33oh well, Stevie Gerrard, he's written off, it's crazy, these boys, they've got, you
07:37know, they've got something to offer, and I want to see them get back in, and get the
07:41opportunity to manage, there's lots of very, you know, lads out there, English
07:45lads, who just don't get the opportunities, or people can't wait for
07:49them to fail for some reason, and it's great to see Frank doing so well at
07:52Coventry, and let's hope he can get them in the playoffs, which I think he, every
07:56chance now, and if he can get them up, would be wonderful, you know.
