00:00In 2023, as many as 90,000 tons of food were wasted during Ramadhan,

00:08causing concern about the impact it could have on the greenhouse effect.

00:13It is now time for the authorities to introduce more natural alternative measures,

00:19such as the use of black soldier fly.

00:23On the day of the annual Malaysian User Union Meeting,

00:26Nur Asyikin Amuddin said,

00:27BASF fly can process organic waste effectively without harming the environment.

00:34It's like a circular, you know, a circular use.

00:37It means, from humans, we will produce food waste,

00:40but the food waste will not go to the landfill,

00:44because it will be collected in one place,

00:46and we will use, we will apply the black soldier,

00:50so that the black soldier will produce,

00:53maybe a budget, and also food for livestock.

00:59So, based on that, actually from livestock, budget, and then,

01:03the animals and plants will be eaten by humans.

01:05So, can you see, the concept is circular.

01:08So, this means that the food waste will not end up in the landfill,

01:12but it will be in the circular, circular concept.

01:18In an effort to raise awareness about food waste management,

01:21the Isaktif Lab University Malaya group

01:23challenged to develop a BASF waste project

01:26in the university's mini farm since March last year.

01:29Its founder, Aisyah Maisarah Abdul Razak, 23, said,

01:33BASF larvae can eat any organic waste,

01:36including food, fruits and vegetables that are spoiled,

01:39as well as expired food.

01:41What's interesting about BASF is that it's not on the larva itself,

01:46but the phase before it becomes a larva,

01:48that is, at the phase it becomes a larva.

01:50When it becomes a larva, it is the phase when it is very, very hungry,

01:55and it can help us in food waste management.

01:59This BASF larva can eat up to four times its own body weight.

02:04For example, like me, 50 kg.

02:05If I become a larva, I can eat 200 kg of food.

02:09But on a small scale, because this larva is 1.4 grams in weight,

02:16it can eat 0.16 grams of food.

02:20In UM, we have more than 15 cafes.

02:23So it's an easy thing for us to keep BASF here

02:28with nearby food waste resources.

02:32Aisyah said that BASF management is not difficult

02:34and meets its needs,

02:36such as a temperature between 25 and 35 degrees Celsius

02:40and a humidity of 50% to 70%.

02:43Usually, we will come and manage BASF in the afternoon

02:46after class is over.

02:48And in the morning, if there is no class in the morning,

02:50like that.

02:52It is more to, one of its challenges is

02:55BASF needs a lot of attention.

03:01It needs a lot of attention because

03:04if there is a lack of humidity, we have to spray water

03:06and so on, if there is a lack of food, we have to put more food.

03:11can also be used as food for various types of chickens

03:14in the mini-UM farm.
