00:00The Department of Justice has argued that the justice system of the country is strong.
00:04In fact, the government continues to move to give justice to the victims of the extrajudicial killings
00:11and the perpetrators will be held accountable.
00:14Luisa Erispe is in the center of the news.
00:19The justice system of the country is not collapsing but is still working.
00:24That is what the Department of Justice is arguing in spite of the statements that the government failed
00:31to arrest and bring to the Hague Netherlands the former President Rodrigo Duterte.
00:36According to Assistant Secretary Mico Clavano, the spokesperson of the DOJ,
00:40the government's move was to show sovereignty to help the international community.
00:48This should not be an admission that we do not have a working justice system.
00:52In fact, we have strengthened the justice system because of the many reforms of the Department of Justice,
01:01of the DILG, under the administration of President Marcos.
01:08This is why many are saying, are we not giving up a part of our sovereignty?
01:15Are we not giving up our sovereignty?
01:19What we think of the government is that this is an act of sovereignty to cooperate with the international community.
01:26The DOJ also said that even though Duterte was flown to other countries,
01:30the investigation of the extrajudicial killings during the war on drugs of the former administration is still ongoing.
01:37Yesterday, there was a preliminary investigation in the murder complaint filed against the former PCSO General Manager,
01:45Roina Garma, and other possible suspects in the murder of EJK.
01:49They are also continuing to gather evidence against the former president.
01:54The wheels of justice are spinning, so to speak.
01:57However, I think this is really a matter of timing
02:02because now we are collecting all the evidence regarding the drug war of the former President Duterte
02:12and many witnesses are approaching us.
02:17However, the case that was filed in the International Criminal Court, in the ICC, was first.
02:26That is why their warrant of arrest was first.
02:29The DOJ also assures that the former president will not be the only one to be held accountable here.
02:34Even the police or officials who are possibly involved in the EJK,
02:38he will still be held accountable by the law.
02:41We will not take a break because someone has already been arrested in the ICC.
02:45That is not true.
02:47We will continue to work, we will continue to gather and collate evidence
02:50and we will make sure that those who are charged with these crimes will be given their day in court, due process.
02:57And if ever there is evidence that our law enforcement has done something wrong,
03:04we will make sure to solve it.
03:06The DOJ once again emphasized that maximum tolerance was required in the arrest of the former president.
03:12Even if he was not able to enter the Villamor Air Base,
03:15Vice President Sara Duterte and his close friends and allies
03:21including the former president, his family, and his lawyer,
03:25the law must be balanced in public order and safety.
03:32We saw that the former president was with his family, his wife and son,
03:40and his lawyers, including Atty. Medeldea and Atty. Delgra.
03:46The DOJ also emphasized that Duterte's rights will not be neglected while he is abroad.
03:52It is proven that the Philippine Embassy in the Netherlands is already asking for help
03:57and is remembering the needs of the former president.
04:00Luisa Erispe for Pambansang TV in Bagong, Philippines.
