00:00Ukraine's agreed to the u.s. Proposal of an immediate ceasefire for 30 days in its fight against the russian invasion now
00:06This accord is expected to mean a resumption of u.s. Military aid for ukraine as well as intelligence sharing
00:13Their removal had handed russia a key strategic advantage just a week ago and putin's forces stepped up bombing ever since
00:21the talks of course in saudi arabia hosted by
00:24The saudis in jeddah the u.s. Secretary of state marco rubio concluding thus the ball is now in moscow's court
00:33What a mrs. Lenski's top aid at the talks andrea
00:35Yermak says this will now show if vladimir putin and russia want peace or not
00:40Well, let's hear from mike waltz the u.s. National security advisor who is part of the american negotiating team
00:49think as a result of
00:51Of this positive step forward the president has decided to lift the pause
00:56on aid
00:57And on our security assistance to ukraine going forward and that's effective immediately
01:03Mike waltz and marco rubio that in jeddah
01:06Let's bring in david smith bureau chief of the guardian newspaper joining us from washington dc. David a very good into you
01:13Big moves there in jeddah it seems, but of course the russians still need to agree
01:17Yes, indeed, uh after this three-year war this is potentially
01:22An important breakthrough, um 30-day ceasefire to ensure ukraine seem to agree
01:27Um pretty quickly and in return the u.s. Announcing and it will no longer suspend
01:34intelligence sharing or um supply of uh weapons and and as you had uh
01:39Secretary of state marco rubio say the ball is in russia's court
01:43He was asked by reporters, um, what is the deadline for a russian response, um to this proposal and uh,
01:50He said, uh, just as soon as possible. Um, donald trump
01:54Wanted this war to end yesterday or the day before um, and right now we do not know
02:00How the russians will respond to this?
02:02Um and rubio said, uh, you know if they refuse then we will know where the barrier to peace is
02:09Where the barrier to peace is so that's possibly a
02:12Significant shift in momentum because um for the past few weeks. It seems like the u.s
02:17Has almost been blaming ukraine for this ongoing conflict and uh, and that may no longer be the case
02:24um, we also heard from ukrainian president zalinsky in a statement, uh,
02:28welcoming um today's talks and uh saying the american side
02:33understands our arguments, um, it's now about silence in the sea and sky and
02:38Also building trust possibly with the exchange of prisoners with russia
02:44Indeed, of course the devil's into detail as the phrase goes
02:47Do we have any idea what the terms and conditions of this accord might be david?
02:52Uh, no very little and um when uh, rubio and uh,
02:57National security advisor mike waltz were asked about that. Um that their default was, you know, we need to secure peace
03:04first
03:05Before we can talk about those details such as um prisoner swaps. Um, so I think uh skeptics will
03:13point out, uh, you know, this is a
03:15A potentially important breakthrough, but there is still a long way to go here
03:19You know, will the russians, uh, even agree and if they do what sort of um,
03:24Restrictions will they seek to impose? Um, we've heard the u.s. Um speaking along the lines of um,
03:32Uh, you know clearly russia is not going to take over ukraine but at the same time it's also unrealistic that um,
03:38There would be a return to the 2014 borders when russia started its invasion and
03:43And yeah, the devil in those details of just just how much land is the u.s
03:47Asking ukraine to surrender here and how acceptable will that be uh remains to be seen the
03:53The logic seems to be you know, get a truce in place first and then we will talk
03:58Do we read into this that there is now a tangible improvement in u.s. Ukraine relations or is that too soon to say?
04:06Um, yeah, I think it's fair to um say, uh,
04:11some kind of improvement there, um
04:14the ukrainian official attending these talks described them as uh,
04:18constructive um zelensky was uh positive and certainly, um these u.s. Uh,
04:24representatives uh, rubio and waltz, um also
04:27Seem pretty upbeat about the way the ukrainians had been had responded. Um now they haven't actually signed the the minerals deal yet, which of course
04:35Zelensky was supposed to do at the white house before that that blow up that diplomatic nightmare that unfolded
04:41Maybe that will come. Um, and I suppose the other big test
04:45We have to see now is will we get a statement from donald trump?
04:48Will will he be more um warm and welcoming in his rhetoric to ukraine?
04:53Because uh, obviously in recent months and indeed years we've had this
04:57Very curious situation where he does seem more sympathetic to vladimir putin and russia in his public statements
05:04David smith bureau chief of the guardian newspaper in washington dc as always
05:08Thank you for joining us and uh, bringing that light
05:10We need shed on this very complex story david smith there from the guardian joining us from washington
05:16So it seems that we're on the path towards some kind of peace in ukraine with ukraine agreeing to that immediate ceasefire
05:22proposed by the united states for 30 days
05:26We now await of course, uh, moscow's reply and really deftly joins us our international
