05:50well as you can see we all live inside casinos
05:52no we don't
05:54I'm just playing as a joke
05:56we all live in casinos
05:58some people probably think that
06:00oh yes it happens
06:02some people think which hotel do you live in
06:04no
06:06very few locals actually live
06:08here on the strip in the major hotels
06:10or anywhere
06:12there are some places where people have condos
06:14and stuff like that but very rare
06:16most of us live
06:18some people live near the strip
06:20but a lot of locals
06:22live anywhere 10, 15, 20, 30
06:24minutes away or more
06:26and many of them go years
06:28without coming down here
06:30so it's a fully functioning city
06:32regardless of tourism
06:34but here we have such a big
06:36hospitality and tourism industry
06:38with gambling, with shows, with conventions
06:40with concerts
06:42with now even more sporting events
06:44that's a massive part of the economy here
06:46but plenty of people here
06:48work in jobs that you would find anywhere else
06:50would you say that there are locals
06:52who are addicted to gambling
06:54there's gambling addictions
06:56oh there are, whether it's gambling, whether it's alcohol
06:58whether it's a drug of any sort
07:00or anything
07:02there's certainly going to be people who
07:04have addictions
07:06and if you're going to be in a place like this
07:08it can be challenging
07:10but yeah there's an element
07:12of the population that certainly has that
07:14and how's the crime here compared to
07:16maybe the rest of USA
07:18from the two days I've been it seems pretty safe
07:20but I don't know, I've been on the strip
07:22so as far as the crime here
07:24what was interesting
07:26across the country in the year 2020
07:28you saw particularly violent crime
07:30go up, we did see homicides
07:32go up here in 2020 but it actually went up
07:34even higher in 2021
07:36and they have come back down since then
07:38LA, that's the
07:40place I was at last
07:42and it seems pretty bad there
07:44in areas
07:46LA is kind of known for that
07:48so I mean the Las Vegas area is over 2 million
07:50people so you're going to have your parts that are nicer
07:52and some parts that are worse as well like any large
07:54metro area
07:56the volume of Los Angeles, I mean Los Angeles
07:58county is about 5 times the population here
08:00I mean if you're going to be in the strip area
08:02there's not that much violent crime
08:04that happens here
08:06the homeless people living underground, is that still
08:08prevalent? Certainly
08:10I think it's estimated to be about 1,500 or so
08:12living underground
08:14I was told that that is essentially its own
08:16community
08:18they have a hierarchy down in those tunnels
08:20I think when I was doing my research
08:22probably the most interesting thing
08:24that I found is about
08:26prostitution being legal in the state of
08:28Nevada, so is that like really
08:30popular here?
08:32So the thing to be cautious with that
08:34is the state
08:36yes, in every
08:38part of the state, no
08:40including where we're standing right now
08:42It's not legal in Vegas
08:44In this county, Clark County
08:46it is not, the closest you could go
08:48is this town called Pahrump which is in a county
08:50called Nye, N-Y-E, Nye County
08:52because it's only
08:54legal in the rural counties
08:56and even then of the rural counties
08:58I think it's about half, maybe even less than
09:00half actually
09:02offer it. But it does happen
09:04Oh yeah
09:06I guess like anywhere in the world
09:08Truth be very told, it is called Sin City
09:10for a reason
09:12It certainly does, and that's part of the
09:14debate is some people argue that it
09:16should be legalized across the state
09:18some people believe even across the country
09:20because then you can actually regulate
09:22it, then the belief is that you can
09:24make it safer for both parties
09:26who want to engage in it versus them having to go
09:28in a street or wherever
09:30they're, you know, doing deals
09:32So you're probably about an hour from here
09:34for it to actually be really, to where
09:36it's fully legal. Oh wow, so this
09:38is an apartment complex
09:40We just walked from the strip
09:42in a huge casino
09:44and then I feel like I'm in some kind of small town
09:46in America. If you had to guess how much
09:48would they be paying rent?
09:50Studio apartments, yeah they're probably
09:52paying at least a thousand bucks or more
09:54There's a studio right here
09:56on the strip. Conservatively I'll say at least a thousand dollars
09:58or more. Prices
10:00have leveled off a bit when it comes to
10:02rentals. Just about two years ago though they were
10:04like peak, kind of like home prices were really
10:06peak here. So they've kind of flatlined a bit
10:08but it's not like they've dropped
10:10a lot. It seems to me like a
10:12like an American version
10:14of Dubai
10:16It's like a tax haven
10:18somewhat of a tax haven. It's a
10:20holiday destination that they've just
10:22created out of the desert. You know
10:24MGM Resorts and Sears Entertainment
10:26those two companies
10:28between the two of them own the majority
10:30of the hotels and casinos here on the strip
10:32Really? Yeah, so
10:34On the new strip and the old strip?
10:36Right here
10:38So yeah, so Fremont Street
10:40For people who don't know, there's like
10:42the old town which is like old
10:44Fremont Street, which still like
10:46looks quite new in part of it
10:48where they've got the TV screen on the ceiling
10:50Yeah, the canopy. That looks new
10:52but it's actually old. So I'll clarify
10:54So I know people will often times say
10:56old strip or old town or something like that
10:58The locals, I don't really ever hear them
11:00say that. So usually they'll just say Fremont Street
11:02or they'll just say downtown. You know, when you're talking
11:04when people say old town, they are talking
11:06about like, you know, really like the origins
11:08of Las Vegas in downtown
11:10and where the canopy is
11:12where they have the light show, that's Fremont Street
11:14So a lot of times the locals will just say
11:16Fremont Street or they'll say downtown
11:18When they say the strip, they're referring to
11:20this behemoth right here
11:22that we're walking along
11:24Which is probably where most of the money is coming in
11:26Yeah, oh yeah
11:28This about 4 mile or so
11:30stretch from Mandalay Bay
11:32to the Strat. Yeah, that's where there's
11:34the biggest money. Downtown, off strip
11:36You know, there's plenty of money all over the
11:38Vegas Valley that's being made
11:40Particularly from tourism, but yeah
11:42a huge portion of it is in this like
11:444 mile stretch. Okay, so this is
11:46the Mirage, which is
11:48about to be closed
11:50Yeah, for about 3 years
