Ballarat Highway Patrol Acting Sergeant talks about what drivers can expect during Operation Arid on the 2025 March Long weekend. Video by Adam Spencer
Transcript
00:00We're going to be out there on all sorts of road policing, from drink drive, distraction,
00:24fatigue and speed, all those factors are just not on and adding up to way too many collisions
00:29in our area. It's been an overall trend of fatality collisions
00:35in our area. We're up 50% over the last 12 months, which is just not on. It's ridiculous.
00:40And so mad March for this time of season and that to me is just not on. We shouldn't have
00:46to get to this point where we're having so many collisions on a period of the year where
00:52people are going away for long weekends and should be enjoying it instead of seeing an
00:58ambulance or a hospital or even worse. And we don't want to be sending anyone to court
01:05for anything that's happened. We don't want to be taking licence away. We don't want to
01:08be giving infringements. We shouldn't have to have that reason to do that.
01:15Speed is a big factor on our rural roads. We've got a lot of high-speed rural roads
01:19in our area and the stakes are high. When you're travelling 100km an hour, people get
01:24too comfortable with that. It's a large speed. Standing next to the road with a vehicle going
01:28past you, you'll realise how fast that is. So it's really concentrate, lower that speed,
01:33leave earlier, enjoy the drive.
