00:00So first of all, welcome to INS, both of you.
00:04And first of all, we would like to know from you,
00:06Ramta blends Indian rhythms with contemporary sound.
00:08So how do you both collaborate to achieve this unique sound?
00:11Yes.
00:14See, our tradition is from Indian classical music.
00:21We come from legacy families.
00:24And the whole training has been in traditional Indian
00:29classical music.
00:30So percussively, we have learned from our respective
00:34gharanas, being Punjab and Farrukhabad.
00:38But throughout our lives, both Taufiq bhai and myself,
00:43we have explored different forms of cultural rhythmic
00:49expressions.
00:51And because of that, there has always
00:54been an interest in world percussion.
00:57And therefore, the knowledge that we
01:01bring to the table from Indian classical music
01:05is translated into world percussion
01:09and an interpretation of that, which
01:11is probably quite different from the way most people calibrate
01:15this information.
01:17And in a sense, both he and I, we've
01:20been very similar in our understanding of the subject.
01:25And hence, there is a common ground for us to work on.
01:33Because the kind of understanding
01:37that we've developed comes from the fact
01:39that there is a commonality of history.
01:42Ki unka bhi parivar mein itna tabla is such a huge thing,
01:48and in mine as well, and the fact
01:50that we both have explored live world percussion.
01:54Toh yeh ground set tha Ramta ke liye.
01:57Or it was only a matter of time before which
01:59we actually ended up doing it.
02:00Correct.
02:02So yeh basically Vikram da ka idea hai,
02:04ki hum log saath mein karte hain.
02:06Aur mere liye bhi yeh bahut achi baat thi,
02:08because main inka kaam admire karta hu.
02:12Mera album aaya tha 25 saal pehle, Ridhun.
02:14Aur inka album aaya tha 24 saal pehle, Rhythmscape.
02:19Toh dono hi rhythm ke album the, but different from each other.
02:23Toh us dauraan bhi hum ek doosre ke saath milte the,
02:26humne collaborations bhi ki, humne bajaya bhi.
02:29Toh bahut accha tha, because jaisi unhone bataya,
02:31hum do aise percussionists hai,
02:32ki hum log bahut kuch, matlab dekhi humare background same hai,
02:36lekin hum log alag-alag sounds ko explore karte hain.
02:39Aur is album ke liye Vikram da se accha,
02:42mere liye koi aur accha collaborator nahi mil sakta tha.
02:46Toh isliye Ramta, matlab Vikram da ka Ram
02:49aur Taufiq ka Ta milke Ramta mana.
02:51Ramta also means playfulness.
02:54Toh bas hum jaha bhi poori studio mein,
02:56jab bhi hum kaam kar rahe the,
02:58hum log, we were just having fun.
03:00We were just playing.
03:01Aur whatever has come out,
03:02woh khelte khelte hi ek album ban gaya hai, Ramta.
03:06Lekin, there is a seriousness in it.
03:08Usme mahinat bhi bahut gayi hai.
03:09Toh umit karte hain, ke aap logon ko pasand aayega yeh.
03:12Sir, how did the idea of Ramta came about?
03:15And what message do you want listeners to take away from it?
03:18Ramta, jaisi maine aapko bataya, yeh Vikram da ka idea hai.
03:21Jab aaye mere paas, toh bas maine bhi wohi socha,
03:23jaise maine kaha, ki yeh bahut accha collaboration rahega.
03:28Hum logon ka bahut talmeil hai.
03:30Hum dono humesha ek hi page mein rehte hain.
03:33We are always on the same page.
03:35Hum logon ki mindset bhi bahut milte julte hain.
03:38Main kabhi kuch soch raha hoon,
03:40toh waisa hi dada bhi sochte rehte hain.
03:42Main bolne se pehle, woh bol dete hain.
03:44Ya unhone kaha kuch, toh mujhe lagte hain,
03:46arre yeh bhi main, main bhi yeh hi soch raha tha.
03:49Ek koi piece ke baare mein,
03:50ya kya sound use karna hai maha pe.
03:53Toh stage pe bhi wohi hai.
03:54Stage pe bhi wohi hai.
03:55There's a lot of interaction hum dono ke beech mein
03:57jo spontaneously jaata hai.
04:00Aur hum log bahut baad same mindset pe rehte hain,
04:03same jagah pe humara pauchna ho jaata hai.
04:05Toh wo isaap se, main yeh hi kaunga,
04:07ki jab bhi koi collaboration karein,
04:09jaise aapne ka koi message hai kya,
04:11toh collaboration karein,
04:12toh ek baat dekhi,
04:14ki jis ke saath bhi aap collaboration kar rahein,
04:16uske saath aapka talmeil kaisa hai.
04:18Aapka soch, uska soch mein bahut antar hai,
04:21same hai,
04:22toh zyada acha hoga collaboration mein
04:24because itne zyade clashes bhi nahi honge.
04:26Toh collaboration karne ke liye ek talmeil hona,
04:29ek sahi soch,
04:30ek seemit soch,
04:32ek jaisi soch hona,
04:33bahut zaruri hota hai.
04:35Sir, Thumka lie with energetic and fresh,
04:38so what inspired its composition?
04:40Thumka naam inhone diya.
04:43Thumka jaise likha hua hai track ke upar,
04:48live recording hai.
04:50Matlab, hum bus studio mein gaye,
04:54aur video, audio saath saath record hua,
04:56hum bus bajaye,
04:57ek take mein bajaye,
04:58jo aaya,
04:59wo aapke saamne hai.
05:01Toh it is like a live performance.
05:03Jaise live performance humein hum karte hain,
05:05ussi tarah se humne Thumka record kiya
05:09aur wo live energy humein dena tha logon ko,
05:13humein laga ki Ramta mein
05:14ek do live track hona chahiye,
05:16kyunki uska jo energy hota hai,
05:18wo produced track se alag hota hai.
05:21Aur logon ko bhi maza aayega,
05:22kyunki bahut groovy hai track,
05:25isiliye iska naam bhi Thumka hai,
05:27thoda Indianized name hai,
05:29ismein kuch Indian rhythms bhi hai,
05:31but aapko maza aayega,
05:32kyunki usmein jo bhi hai,
05:35agar aam log bhi sune,
05:38toh unko laga hai ki hum ispe bhi naach sakte hain,
05:41ispe bhi group kar sakte hain,
05:43aur saath saath,
05:45there is also a lot of information there.
05:47Iska jo information hai,
05:49wo hamara talim se aata hai,
05:51aur wo live mein translate karna mushkil kaam hai,
05:57kyunki live mein galatiyan ho sakta hai,
06:00but humne apne aapko wo chance diya nahi,
06:04humne ye risk le hi liya,
06:06aur le ke very luckily everything went well,
06:09and the track is being loved by people.
06:13Sir, how do you see the evolution of percussion
06:15in today's music scene?
06:18Origin?
06:18Origin of percussion?
06:20Evolution.
06:21Evolution.
06:22Evolution.
06:22Well, dekhiye ek daur tha Panchamda ka,
06:25jab Panchamda chote chote percussions ko
06:28ek bahut importance de dete the,
06:31ki unke gaane mein kabhi kabhi shaker ka pattern,
06:33ya ratio ratio ka pattern,
06:34bongo ke pattern se zyada loud hota tha,
06:36kyunki unko wo ratio ratio ka pattern chahiye raha tha,
06:39to percussions ka bada development hua hai,
06:42bada evolvement hua hai,
06:43percussions,
06:44aaj kal toh sab kuch aapko laptop pe mil jata hai,
06:48VSTs hote hain jisse kehte hain virtual synth,
06:53toh aapne udhar se ek uthaya,
06:54yahaan pe la ke paste kar diya,
06:56toh poora ek bongo ka pattern aa jayega,
06:58poora ek drum ka pattern aa jayega,
07:00toh ek daur tha,
07:00ki jab hum log kaam karte the film industry mein,
07:02toh humko poora pattern banana padta tha,
07:04song ka pattern,
07:06cross ka pattern,
07:07music ka pattern,
07:08antre ka pattern,
07:08pick up,
07:09aisa sab bana ke phir usse sequence mein dalna padta tha,
07:12toh aaj kal toh kuch nahi hai,
07:13aaj kal toh bas uthaya,
07:15paste kar diya,
07:16acha mujhe ye itne baar ke liche hai,
07:17utna usko copy kar liya,
07:19toh music ka compose karna,
07:22jisme percussions bhi hai,
07:24wo aur khaaskar percussions thoda aur bhi easy ho gaya hai,
07:28aur bahut sare percussions naye naye bhi nikhle hai,
07:30bahut companies aa gayi hai,
07:31jo percussions banati hain,
07:33pehle sirf ek hi company hua karti thi,
07:35abhi toh LP,
07:36Remo,
07:37Meinl,
07:37kya kya naye naye percussions aa rahe hain,
07:39shakers mein bhi alag alag prakaar ki percussions aa rahe hain,
07:43phir bhi,
07:44main yeh feel karta hu,
07:45ki ek zamane mein jo live musicians use hua karte the,
07:50aaj ke daur mein kam hota hai,
07:52aaj ke daur mein yeh sab kuch,
07:53aadmi apne computer se nikal ke ho jata hai,
07:55jab ki ek aadmi live jab bajayega,
07:57ek gaane ke peeche live bajayega,
07:59toh usmein ek jhol hota hai,
08:00usmein ek,
08:01ek apne ek roodari pan hoti hai,
08:03wo aaj kal missing hai,
08:04ek computerized maamla hai lagta hai zyada se zyada,
08:07aapka kya khayal hai usmein?
08:09Dekhiye,
08:10aap agar,
08:12ek track,
08:14aaj ke zamane mein jo tracks bante hain,
08:16cut paste,
08:17jaise Taufiq bhai ne kaha,
08:19aap wo suniye,
08:21aur aap hamara ramta suniye,
08:23aapko farak dik jayega,
08:25kyunki,
08:26hum jab baja rahe hain,
08:28toh hum live baja rahe hain,
08:30aur,
08:32us live mein,
08:33ek human chemistry hota hai,
08:35ek human emotional aspect hota hai,
08:39jo rhythmically nikal ke aata hai,
08:41aur jab log usko sunte hain,
08:43toh unko kahi na kahi,
08:44uska,
08:46ek lagao peda hota hai uske saath,
08:48ki ye human quality hai,
08:49aur jab wo cut paste hota hai,
08:52uska ek,
08:53ek machine quality aata hai usmein,
08:56ki aapko lagta hai ki,
08:57arre ye toh loop hai,
08:59arre ye toh,
08:59iska toh variations nahi hai,
09:01ismein toh wohi cheez dubara baj raha hai,
09:03baar baar baj raha hai,
09:04toh,
09:04hamara music mein,
09:06ramta mein aapko,
09:07variation hi variation dikhega,
09:09aur itna,
09:11matlab,
09:11live playing hai usmein,
09:13ki aapko,
09:14wo purane wala maza bhi aayega,
09:16aur naye soch mein,
09:17kyunki hum,
09:18aaj ke zamane ke soch se,
09:20hum kaam kar rahe hain,
09:21matlab,
09:22aaj ka world music ka soch jo hai,
09:24as in,
09:25hamara influences saare duniya se hai,
09:28kahin Africa se hai,
09:29toh kahin Afro-Cuban se hai,
09:30kahin India se toh hai hi hai,
09:32North India se hai,
09:33South India se hai,
09:34West se hai,
09:35East se hai,
09:36toh,
09:37itna influences leke,
09:37hum jo de rahe hain,
09:38ramta mein,
09:39woh ek live energy hai,
09:41uska koi,
09:43uska koi,
09:45there cannot be a substitute for that.
09:48Sir,
09:49you always often criticize fusion music,
09:51for diluting classical traditions,
09:54so how do you respond to such criticism?
09:56I will say this simply that,
09:58classical music apne jagah hai,
10:00classical music ko toh koi leke chher chhar nahi kar raha hai,
10:05fusion ek alag genre hai,
10:07alag ek disha hai,
10:08alag ek style hai,
10:10usmein hum fusion kar rahe hain,
10:12aisa nahi hota hai ki,
10:13jab main classical concert kar raha hoon,
10:15main tabla bajana hoon,
10:16kisi ke saath sitar ke yah,
10:17sarod ke saath,
10:19tab main fusion element nahi lata hoon usmein,
10:21tab waha achanak main body drumming nahi karta hoon,
10:24waha pe classicality rakke kaam hota hai,
10:26same with Taufiq bhai,
10:28hum log fusion tabhi karte hain,
10:30jahan humara umbrella fusion ka ho,
10:33agar umbrella classical ka ho,
10:34toh hum waha fusion nahi karte hain.
