"Conclave" Director Edward Berger on what inspired him to make the film

00:00Could you maybe just tell us a little bit about what inspired you?

00:05On the surface level, it felt to me we could make a great political thriller from the 70s, a Pekula movie,

00:12like Parallax View or The President's Men, that type of film.

00:16And with that comes a wonderful precision and a restraint.

00:21And all that, and the chess game in the beginning of the film felt like it had to be an architectural, precise film.

00:28And all that comes with, you know, that kind of guides then your pacing of how you edit and how you shoot it

00:36and how you focus on your main character.

00:40That was basically the beginning of it. Pekula, I would say.

00:44We just looked at Pekula movies and said, let's make a movie like that.
