00:14to preview our game against Manchester United.
00:16We'll start off with Vinnie from Sky.
00:18David, felt fortunate to be at the test event for the new stadium on Monday,
00:22the new stadium is stunning, and I just wonder how much time,
00:25if any, have you been able to spend down there just yet,
00:27and how are you feeling about the move now?
00:29I'm guessing you've probably seen images of fans in there for the first time.
00:32Yeah, I have, I was going to ask you to tell me what it looked like.
00:35Because when I said when I came in that I'm not going to get out in the new stadium
00:40until I'm sure we're a Premier League club,
00:42I'm sure that we are a Premier League club again,
00:45so I want to wait on that, I'm going to wait to make sure we get over the line
00:50and make sure we take the team into the new stadium as that.
00:54As you mentioned getting over the line,
00:56I know the Premier League club has taken more points than Everton since you came back,
00:59it's 13 points clear now of the bottom three,
01:01having been a point above when you took over,
01:03so I'm thinking two further wins will probably secure safety, how do you see it?
01:07Keep talking like that, Vinnie, I'm enjoying listening to that,
01:09it's really, really good.
01:11It sounds simple, you say to get another two wins and you might be over the line,
01:15when you're sitting in this seat at every win in the Premier League
01:18it's really, really difficult, certainly not taking it for granted.
01:22We've had a really good run and we've got to try and keep that going now.
01:26Just wondering what you're expecting this weekend,
01:28because it's been highlighted that Ruben wants to stick with 3-4-3,
01:32did you come in here with a preconceived idea of how you wanted to play
01:35or did you have to adjust to what you've got available?
01:37I think I've had to adjust a little bit to what's available,
01:40I think when you take over a team a little bit during the season
01:43you have to find a way of getting the best results,
01:46we certainly did because we've been in a position
01:49where we've been too close to the bottom three,
01:52but I have to say the players, whatever we've done,
01:55whatever we've asked them to do, the players have been fantastic,
01:58they really have been, they've gone about their job brilliantly well,
02:02their commitment's there for everybody to see
02:05and we're actually playing better and doing a lot better in recent games.
02:09Obviously it's been spoken about needing to find a striker
02:11and you've found one in Beto who's got four in three starts for you now,
02:15what more can you get from him?
02:17Well I think if we'd bought one in and we'd paid big money
02:19and somebody had scored four in three starts you'd say,
02:22wow, what a great start it's been for any striker to do that.
02:27So Beto's been given a big opportunity, I think he's stood up and taken it,
02:32I think he's improved in the games as he's gone along as well,
02:35sometimes the players need those opportunities.
02:38So let's hope it continues, let's hope he can keep scoring.
02:41You can go four points clear of Manchester United now
02:44and given your association with them,
02:46is anything personal come into games like this,
02:49that you've faced them so many times before?
02:51No, none at all, I've played them a lot when I was manager of West Ham
02:54so it's another game in many ways, it's a great football club
02:59but my job's to try and beat them at the moment.
03:02How different a manager then are you now to the manager
03:05who last took part in this fixture back in April 2014
03:09and the experience that followed after that, how did it shape you?
03:11Part of life I've been a football manager,
03:14there's very few managers that always go in one direction,
03:17you have lots of ups and downs,
03:20even the best managers have times when it's not so good.
03:23I had to find a way of fighting back from the disappointment
03:27of losing my job at Manchester United
03:29and finding ways how I could get myself back to a good level
03:32and we've done that at West Ham, won a trophy at West Ham.
03:38Now I'm back at Everton, first job I had to do at West Ham
03:42was make sure we stay as a Premier League club
03:44and then hopefully find our way to start getting closer
03:47to European football and see where we can go from there.
03:50What is it that shapes you, what are the successes?
03:53I think probably my upbringing and where I come from
03:57made me say you've got to stand up and go again
04:00and you've got to fight for everything
04:03if you're going to get anything in life,
04:05you have to show a real commitment.
04:07I've also got to be thankful that people have given me
04:10the opportunity to come back and show what I can do.
04:13I take it the core is the one player you're getting back
04:16and it probably gives you a nice decision as well
04:18whether to bring him straight back in or continue with Algaraz?
04:21Yes, we've got them both fit at the moment
04:24so that gives us a decision to make and we'll look at it.
04:28I'll need both of them, we're really short on numbers here,
04:31I think we've got nine or ten players out injured.
04:34So for us to be getting results with that amount of players out
04:38is great credit to the players who are playing at the moment.
04:45The specifics behind Beto's output has been quite interesting,
04:49I was looking at it last night.
04:51Last season the majority of his shots were quite scattered
04:54around the 18-yard box, they were wide of either post.
04:58This year he's very much in that central area
05:01of either side of the six-yard box.
05:04Managers come in and they go,
05:06well, strikers need a goal, I give them a bit of confidence.
05:09Is that something you've specifically worked on with him,
05:11that positionality, or is it faith in the service as well?
05:14No, I think it's us trying to get him some balls which suit him,
05:17trying to play to his strengths as much as we can.
05:22He's got a wild few shots outside the box which I've had to say to him,
05:25look, you're dreaming if you think you're going to score that one.
05:30So I've had to tell him straight,
05:32get yourself in the box, get in good areas.
05:36He's scored a few when he's been through in goal at the moment,
05:39he's looked very composed when he's done that.
05:41So hopefully we can keep doing it,
05:43but we want him to do lots of different jobs.
05:46Being a centre-forward of a Premier League club
05:49is a big, big job for MD,
05:51and it's a job where you really need the goals from,
05:54but thankfully in the recent games he's got us those goals.
05:57Well, fingers crossed it continues.
06:00I wondered as well, you talked about the form
06:02and no team has picked up as many points as yourself since your arrival.
06:06I've not talked about it.
06:07We've talked about it, and we quite like talking about it.
06:09Good, I'm glad to hear that.
06:10Going into next season and beyond,
06:13how important is not just this run for now and survival,
06:17but for the stability of the football club,
06:19and does that longevity come into your thought process?
06:22I think the word there that I'd pick out more is stability.
06:25Us trying to get Everton back on a stable place
06:29where everybody feels happy,
06:31and I mean the people inside the building,
06:32the people who work here.
06:34The supporters, probably more than MD,
06:36that they think that there's a football club
06:38which is at least going in the right direction.
06:40When I was here a long time ago when we first came in,
06:42it was a case of trying to build it little by little,
06:45not lots of money.
06:46We've got a new set of owners.
06:48That'll be interesting to see how that plays out over the coming years.
06:52But I think what we've got to do is take Everton away
06:54from this place where they've been for a long, long time.
06:57I sense in the training ground that things are feeling much better.
07:02I sense it definitely coming from the terraces,
07:05the supporters.
07:06I don't know about terraces anymore,
07:08no, probably seats, but you know what I mean.
07:10So I sense it from there as well.
07:13But look, maybe I'm just a new manager with a quick bounce
07:17at the time, which we hear a lot of new managers coming in.
07:20But I hope that it's not that.
07:21I hope that it's as if I've come back and been able to pick it up,
07:25keep the standards up, keep looking to improve it at the moment
07:29and obviously build on what we've got.
07:32We hope so too.
07:33And towards the game itself,
07:35what kind of a fixture do you expect against United?
07:38I always think Manchester United is one of the biggest fixtures
07:42in the season wherever you are.
07:45I think they've always got good players.
07:48I think they've got so many talented players
07:51who are so good at what they do.
07:55They're probably having a bit of a difficult patch at the moment.
07:58It's very rarely you would see Manchester United
08:01probably in the league position they're in.
08:04But we need to see if we can build on what we do here at Everton just now.
08:08I think we've had a really good start,
08:11but I see it being a tough game.
08:13A 12-30 kick-off is never an easy one for the supporters.
08:16So we need the supporters to be up with us
08:19and ready to go at 12-30, the same as the team.

08:29You say there about you've got to try and make people in here happy,
08:33staff and things,
08:34and I think it's understandable given what's gone on
08:37over the previous few years how low maybe people felt.
08:40I know Sean Dyche had said at times
08:42it wasn't necessarily a football coaching job.
08:44Has it been a surprise to you maybe how low people felt in here
08:47compared to your previous time here?
08:49You're not just football managing,
08:51you're looking after everyone.
08:53Well, I have to say this place has grown greatly here at Finch Farm
08:57since I was last here.
08:59There's so many staff.
09:00Even now I've not been able to get round everybody and say hello
09:03and get to understand everybody's roles.
09:07I hope that I'll get through it in time.
09:09But just with the amount of work we've got with the Premier League
09:12and the games we have,
09:13and really even this, the media, et cetera,
09:16there's much more for the manager to do.
09:18But that's why it's a big changed place than when I was here before.
09:23But I do think that the people here have been affected greatly
09:26because they're all Evertonians, they're all supporting the team,
09:29they want the club to do well.
09:31And I do think that the people behind the scenes have been affected,
09:34as have supporters over the last few years as well.
09:37You can see that.
09:39But we're beginning to smile a little bit here in the building.
09:42We're doing that a bit better.
09:44We're laughing a bit more.
09:47And I hope in some ways the supporters are feeling the same.
09:50Something that's been lovely to see on some of the club's content
09:54is Charlie Alcaraz and Jack Harrison and Jack acting as a translator
09:59and just sort of their bond on the training pitch and on the pitch.
10:03I know you've said Jack needed a bit of confidence.
10:05Has that helped him, that type of role, like a mentorship role?
10:08Yeah, I think he's done a great job with Carlos
10:12because his English isn't great at the moment.
10:15I think Jack's needing a bit more confidence.
10:18He got his first game the other week there.
10:20He'd done well for us away at Crystal Palace.
10:22So we need them.
10:23We're short of players at the moment.
10:25There's not a situation that we've got a bundle of players
10:28we can change around all the time.
10:31But I'm pleased that Jack's got back in it.
10:33And yeah, he's done a really good job with Carlos.
10:35Can I just check, there aren't any additional injuries on top?
10:39And just who might be close to coming back?
10:42No, I don't think we have any additional injuries, no.
10:45And I don't think at the moment we have MD coming back from injury
10:48quite at this moment.
10:50And what about Seamus Coleman?
10:52Has he got a time frame for coming back?
10:54Because his contract runs to the end of the season.
10:56He's obviously seen as a club legend
10:58that this potentially might be his final playing season.
11:01Will he play in one of the final games?
11:03I would absolutely hope so
11:05because I'd like that for many reasons.
11:08But we always have to do the right thing
11:11and play the players who we think are going to get us the best results.
11:14But the first thing Seamus needs to do for us is get himself back fit.
11:18He's a huge member of the dressing room.
11:20He's a huge member of the team.
11:22He leads the team brilliantly well here.
11:26From a distance, he looks as if he helped carry the club
11:29over a couple of years as well.
11:31He was a great spokesman and still is a great spokesman
11:33for the team and the club.
11:35So he's really important to me.
11:37We brought him here for £60,000.
11:40Probably paid a bit much for him.
11:42But apart from that, we're really glad to have him.
11:46Finally from me, it's Everton Giants weekend.
11:49There are Everton Giants being celebrated at the game.
11:51Do you see this as a game of two Premier League Giants
11:54that are at the wrong end of the table
11:57that really should be, because of off the field things
12:00and stuff that's gone on beyond their control,
12:02that really should be in a different place?
12:04I don't really want to talk about Manchester United
12:07because they are a huge club
12:11and I don't know their financial situation.
12:13But what I do know from what I've learnt from coming here
12:16is that the thing for me now is to make Everton back to being a big club
12:20and getting them back in amongst the teams who are challenging
12:23at the right end of the table.
12:25We've got jobs to do before that,
12:27whether that be the players we've got and getting to improve them,
12:31whether it be that we've still got some money to pay to clear ourselves up.
12:34But we have to get in a place where we think we're clear
12:38and we're ready to start again.
12:39We're not quite there yet, but getting the job done,
12:42hopefully of staying in the Premier League,
12:44is getting much closer and hopefully we're able to talk about that
12:47in coming weeks.
12:50I'm just glad to see us back and not at the bottom end of the league.

13:03Just on injuries, back to the middleman in Dye,
13:06is there any more news on him and Chimichy and Paterson?
13:10Nathan Paterson has come out on the grass the last couple of days,
13:14but we think it's just too soon for him.
13:16He's making some progress.
13:19Illy's been taking injections and we're quite positive
13:24that he's working hard to try and get back quickly,
13:27so we're hoping that we could get him back maybe before we thought.
13:31But they're not fit just now, no.
13:33And Chimichy?
13:34Chimichy's back on the grass today as well.
13:37He started back on the grass, he said two days on the grass actually.
13:41I think just the length of his time he's been out
13:45is what we're all a little bit more worried about.
13:47He's done quite a bit of training, but not football training yet.
13:50But we've got him backing around the training group at the moment, yeah.
13:55In the first instance, manager, you had some really good centre-halves,
13:58Phil Jagiel, Julian Lescott, Sylvain Distens and Eamon.
14:01Where does Gerard Brampley rank in terms of ability at this age
14:06and how far do you think he can go?
14:08Well, I think you're right.
14:09I think we had some really good centre-backs over the years here.
14:13And quite often, I've got to say, I think that the best teams
14:17wherever they are have the best defence.
14:19And it gives you a chance of winning when you have that.
14:23And I think Gerard's done really well.
14:26I think there's moments where he could do better.
14:28I think he still plays at times like a young centre-back.
14:31But I think he's got an awful lot going for him.
14:34I'd already been involved with England's squad before I came.
14:38I thought he played really well last week.
14:41And I think he's got a good mentor beside him in Tarki.
14:45I think Tarki's been around the league a little bit, seen a lot of it.
14:49And I think for him to play alongside Tarki will be helping him and improving him.
14:53You mentioned the way it's built before.
14:55Obviously, because of the financial situation, Edmund had to sell players
14:58like Charles and Anthony Gordon.
15:00Gerard Brampley was someone who was linked with a potential move
15:03in the summer to Manchester United.
15:05Are you hoping on how much you're aware, how much that situation
15:09has improved in terms of the PSI?
15:11Well, I think the PSI, I don't really know all the stuff about it.
15:16But I do know that we've still got some work to do in the summer.
15:21So that's something which we're going to have to do.
15:24I was aware of it when I came in.
15:28But I'm hoping that we're beginning to stop thinking about that now.
15:33We're beginning to think about we're moving forward, what we're going to do.
15:37I think we've got a bill to pay.
15:39And when we pay that bill, hopefully that's us in the clear.
15:46Gerard's a top player.
15:48And if people want to buy Gerard, you're alluding to that.
15:52I've said many times, bring a big bag of money.
15:57And on the flip side, with the new stadium,
15:59how much of a weapon do you think that could be
16:01in terms of attracting new players potentially?
16:03Well, I hope they're going to look at Everton.
16:05People are going to look at Everton completely different.
16:07Want to join Everton.
16:12We'll need to work out how we bring in the players in the summer.
16:19There's quite a lot of players out of contract in the summer
16:22who we might need to look at as well.
16:24Some not so far away from here.
