In The Loop's John P. Lopez and Reginald Adetula go into more reasons to get excited about new Texans offensive coordinator Nick Caley.
Transcript
00:00You're in the loop right here on Sports Radio 610. Let's let's appreciate more the new offensive coordinator for your Houston
00:06Texans Nick Kaley because I thought a very fascinating piece was put out by Jonathan Alexander of the Houston Chronicle
00:12Again does great work and again salute to DJ B enemy both of them a solid weekend, right?
00:17I did not feel deprived in any way of things that were happening with the Texans and a
00:24Really good piece where he went and he talked to various people in the history so that we get a little bit
00:29Bit of a better is ultimately they titled it why Nick Kaley is the right fit for the Texans at offensive coordinator
00:36I'm interested to kind of get your opinion
00:39Lopez on some of the some of the I think major takeaways that you could have
00:43From this piece and I think both of these that we mentioned obviously the Bobby Sloak one prior
00:48But then this one as well are things that are worth looking at and of course
00:52I will turn again to a segment that I like to call reading
00:54One of the first things that you know jumped out to me was in talking about funny enough
00:59I know that he went and he talked to guys in the Patriots. Yeah system. I think he talked a lot to
01:04Josh McDaniels about it
01:05But one of the first ones that I wanted I grabbed was actually his time with the Rams in which Michael floor who was the
01:10Office coordinator for the Rams and of course Matt LaFleur's brother all that called Kaylee a maniac
01:16But in the best way possibly said Kaylee was equally full go in his personal life as a husband and father for girls as a coach
01:23Whenever the coaching staff needed Kaylee was the guy you could call on to get it done
01:27And he was going to get it done efficiently quote. He got that New England in him is what he got that New England in him
01:36They just worked they don't know any other way yeah, and
01:42All right all right hold on hold on
01:45But I did appreciate that just for you figgy
01:48I appreciate that because like he came and he said you know like I moved with a purpose
01:52I had this energy and some people just be saying that like no there
01:55we got this on record and I did appreciate like when he the the Michael for saying he's got that New England specifically in the
02:02Way of just works works his tail off because that's I mean look
02:06I don't know that I can ask for anything more if it's just hey put
02:09Put your all he does that and I remember like stories of Bill Belichick and his staff
02:14They just be they had them just charting charting charting
02:16And I feel like if you do that the idea of hey, we don't have answers
02:21We don't try some stuff at least right if you have that level of work
02:24We are going to find answers and solutions to what we have here and that that gave me a level of level of as you
02:30Know I'm passionate about performance. That's right. I'll give me a level of kind of confidence what you're doing here
02:35I just love it look. I we don't know how that's gonna play out, but no of course not
02:39But I do like that it that it triggers
02:45It triggers figgy in the best way okay, so you asked me like you know what what were my biggest takeaways?
02:50I
02:51Read this and and it came very very clear to me like it's all about how he builds relationships across the board
02:59Yes, it is it is he going to be able to do and we talked in the first segment about or 1020 about you know
03:06Can he allow CJ Stroud to have a little more?
03:09You know voice is he gonna be able to to get this offensive line?
03:15You know going the way it does and be flexible and adjust the you know his approach and his in his and his style
03:21To what the personnel his hell he said that but I think it all begins with you know sort of the way that it was
03:27Mentioned in this in this story about you know him being a maniac and full go and he said even in his personal life
03:33You know with family. You know kind of like that good OCD
03:38The good OCD that okay, that's out. I'll let you say that
03:41I have the wherewithal and leeway to be able to say that but we all know that guy or that girl that is like
03:49Like you know plan going you know not missing any details
03:52And I got to take care of this and then I got to do that and then I got to do that and it starts with
03:56Building a relationship and then the second part to that the most key part
04:00Will it resonate with this locker room with this offense?
04:03you know we know about some of the offensive linemen and maybe they're not as as
04:08Necessarily bought into everything every aspect of what Bobby Slowick was preaching
04:12Can he can it resonate with them with Nick Caley?
04:15You know preaching it and and adjusting it and talking to them and building those relations. That's it build a relationship
04:22That's his number one thing right now
04:23Yeah
04:23And I mean that's that's one of the things he said he learned from Sean
04:25But it seems like he's had some levels of that since early on
04:29Apparently one of the things that Bill Belichick has
04:32Anybody do if they want to he has a test for all his quality control coach
04:35So if you want to be a quality control coach, which was the way that he was trying to break in with
04:40With the in the NFL with the Patriots if they said that his eagerness showed right?
04:46Belichick has a situation where he makes his guys install a
04:50Defensive coverage concept for the entirety of the staff so they can see kind of how he does that and quote
04:55This is per Josh McDaniels as you can imagine for a young guy that had never been in the NFL
05:00That's not always the easiest setting in the world to handle, but he did very well clearly
05:04You could tell how much he loved football. He was a very very clear communicator
05:08That's two berries mind you and he did a nice job in his presentation
05:12Like that that ability to kind of impart your your ideas and get that through
05:17I know that that's not the fullness of that's not the entirety of like, you know creating
05:23Resonation like having it resonate and creating relationships, but that's got to be that's got to be a good feel that hey, man
05:29At least their communication from top to bottom of getting these things across of whatever they're trying to do
05:34Which is gonna be important
05:35Especially if you actually are gonna be this game plan offense that you claim
05:38we're
05:39Depending on you know game to game or situation a situation or seat
05:42Portion of the season to portion of the season where you might be changing something
05:45Having a clarity and this is what we're doing and let's make sure that we're all on the same page in how we're doing it
05:50That's gonna be super vitally important
05:52It is and and I think you know when I talk about building the relationships and communication and trust
05:57It's not just the players on this offense specifically CJ Stroud. I think it's
06:02Coaches, let's keep this in mind. I I think and I hope that Nick Kaley is smart enough to realize
06:10What he's not great at right now and that might be
06:14Quarterback coaching, you know, all he's ever done is tight ends
06:17He's been involved in some offensive game plans, but has he worked with quarterbacks that much?
06:21I think the fact that he can maybe recognize that and whether you know
06:26It's Gerard Johnson or Splinsky Splinsky Splinsky that he brought in, you know
06:32Being able to recognize what he can't do and and giving them
06:35You know the sort of the the rope to to build that relationship with the quarterbacks and then listen to him
06:40Yeah, and so look I'm encouraged by this
06:43It was a kind of a deep dive and some of the you know
06:46The backgrounds of Nick Kaley and of course it's going to be glowing in these instances where it's like hey
06:50He's coming in and he's new
06:51What do you have for us?
06:53But I thought that it was going in the right ways and again
06:55Falling in line with that presser or the introductory presser on what was that Wednesday?
07:00It does feel like we're still in this place where hey, I'm hearing a lot of good things
07:04Maybe there's a few things that you go. All right, we'll see how this ultimately goes, right? We still don't have an actual
07:10An actual hardline idea of what the offense absolutely looks like
07:13But I think there's a lot of things that you can have
07:16Optimism for when it comes to Nick Kaley in this offense as they move forward
