00:00Can former U.S. President Donald Trump even contest the next U.S. presidential election?
00:09This is a fundamental legal question that now several legal scholars, including prominent
00:14conservative ones, have thrown open for debate.
00:17They are arguing that under the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, Trump, in fact,
00:22cannot contest the presidential race.
00:25This is because he faces a very serious criminal charge of trying to overthrow the previous
00:31election.
00:32Remember, he had called Joe Biden's election in which he had been defeated as a stolen
00:35election.
00:36And that all led to the January 6th Capitol riots, which are being separately probed in
00:40the U.S.
00:41Now, what these legal scholars have argued is that under the law, actually, he can't
00:47contest.
00:48But of course, ultimately, it depends on officials, election officials in different states on
00:52whether or not they put his name on the ballot.
00:54And they admit that whatever happens, it's very likely to be challenged in the courts.
00:59And it's a case that's likely to go up all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.
01:02So it's going to be a very messy legal battle.
01:05These questions are being asked because despite his criminal indictments in various cases,
01:11Trump continues to lead, as far as Republican voters are concerned, to be their favorite
01:15to run for president.
01:17But as far as polls for a race between him and Joe Biden are concerned, they show that
01:22most Americans actually view him unfavorably.
01:24So he's doing well amongst Republican voters, not so well amongst American voters overall.
01:29Whatever happens, this will have fundamental repercussions for the U.S., its constitution,
01:35its democracy, and the world is watching closely.
