In den 1950ern ist die frisch verheiratete Muriel eigentlich gerade dabei, sich ein Bilderbuchleben, mit ihrem Mann Lee ein neues Leben in San Diego aufzubauen, mit einem neuen Haus, festen Jobs und dem Plan eine Familie zu gründen. Aber Muriel ist von diesem Leben schnell gelangweilt und beginnt in On Swift Horses heimlich auf Pferden zu wetten. Dabei kommt sie auch ihrem Schwager Julius näher, der als geschickter Pokerspieler in Las Vegas unterwegs ist.
