00:00More than 300 participants in the 30 sessions on the program, the 22nd National Congress of the Italian Society of Toxicology focuses on the different skills to deal with health and prevention issues and promote scientific dissemination also to the general public.
00:20There are many skills and one of the characteristics of our society is to see together different skills from the world of the clinic to the world of regulatory, experimental toxicology and so on.
00:33We meet and discuss all the most important issues in the field of the respective areas of expertise.
00:43The Honorable Marcello Gemmato, Undersecretary of State of the Ministry of Health, who in his opening message pointed out the responsibility and the assessment of the risks and benefits when it comes to drugs.
00:55A particularly worrying aspect is the one related to the toxicity of synthetic opioids, a phenomenon that has taken alarming proportions globally.
01:05At the Roundtable on Communication and Scientific Dissemination have participated among others the researcher of international fame Silvio Garattini, who has been proclaimed an honorary member of CITOX,
01:15and the virologist Roberto Burioni, who stressed the importance of relying on science to debunk fake news.
01:22Among the topics discussed at the Congress also the many poisons in our country that concern the entire population with percentages more or less similar to children, adults and elderly.
01:32Hundreds of thousands of poisons occur every year and end up mainly in the emergency system, from which there is an absolute need to refer to the anti-poison centers,
01:44because they are not sufficiently known pathologies for which it is necessary that the specialist of the anti-poison center makes his own considerations and assessments for the diagnosis, for the treatment and for the management of these patients.
02:00And finally, food safety. The specialists agree that what comes on the tables of the Italians is safe.
02:07In terms of safety, I would say that the foods are absolutely preserved, because there are rules at the level not only European, but also global,
02:16which dictate very precise rules on how to operate to approve any substance that enters the food chain.
