00:00Good day, welcome to the Gulf News Update for Wednesday, March the 7th.
00:06Here are the top stories at this hour.
00:09The UAE National Media Council has unveiled a set of regulations for electronic media
00:14governing all online activities including e-commerce, publishing, and advertising.
00:21The new guidelines apply to news websites, electronic publishing outlets, and on-demand
00:27printing, including commercial activities conducted through social media within the
00:32UAE.
00:33The new rules will help the UAE media sector remain on top of the rapid developments in
00:38electronic media, said Mansoor Al-Mansouri, Director General of the Council.
00:44Donald Trump's top economic advisor, Gary Cohn, has resigned, the latest in a series
00:49of high-profile departures from the U.S. administration.
00:53Cohn, who heads the National Economic Council, had reportedly threatened to leave after Trump's
00:58incendiary comments following the deadly race riot in Charlottesville, Virginia.
01:03But his announcement comes after Trump's decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum
01:09imports.
01:10Trump's tariff policy is a move that Cohn and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin have
01:15reportedly vehemently opposed.
01:19Police fired tear gas to disperse rioters in a curfew-bound central Sri Lanka hours
01:24after a state of emergency was imposed in a bid to quell anti-Muslim violence.
01:30At least three policemen were wounded in the overnight clashes at a suburb of Kandy.
01:35Seven people were arrested for breaking the curfew and trying to cause unrest in the multi-ethnic
01:40district, which is a popular tourist destination.
01:44A group of investors have pulled out of a deal to buy the beleaguered Weinstein company
01:50after discovering tens of millions of dollars in undisclosed debt.
01:54Businesswoman Maria Contreras-Sweet, who has been leading the group of buyers, said disappointing
01:59information had led her to call off the sale.
02:03And finally, the weather.
02:04Today's high across the UAE will be 27 degrees Celsius, dropping to 19 degrees at night.
02:09That's all for now.
